Burton (1821 90) was a colourful and often controversial character. A talented linguist and keen ethnologist, he worked in India during the 1840s as an interpreter and intelligence officer for General Sir Charles Napier, and published several books about his experiences in 1851 2. He first gained celebrity, however, for his adventurous 1853 trip to Mecca, under the disguise of a pilgrim, which is described in this lively three-volume publication (1855 6). Few Europeans had ever visited the Muslim holy places; one of them was John Lewis Burckhardt, whose 1829 account is also reissued in this series. Volume 2 of Burton's book vividly describes the heat and dangers of the journey to Medina, the behaviour and conversation of the pilgrims from many different tribes and nations, and the mosques, tombs and other sights of the bustling city, complete with traders and beggars.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":51019559797009,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":51019561926929,"sku":"NIN9781108041997","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52139831099665,"sku":"NLS9781108041997","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/110804199X.jpg?v=1751081162"},{"product_id":"memoirs-of-the-lady-hester-stanhope-book-charles-lewis-meryon-9781108052085","title":"Memoirs of the Lady Hester Stanhope","description":"Charles Lewis Meryon (1783 1877) was the personal physician to the unconventional and adventurous Lady Hester Stanhope (1776 1839), who left England in 1810 to travel to the Middle East. She eventually settled in Lebanon and by the time she died no longer had contact with any Europeans. Meryon's Travels of Lady Hester Stanhope (also reissued in this series) recounted her journey during the first seven years he spent with her before returning to England to complete his medical training. Over the next twenty years, they remained in contact and he stayed with her on two more occasions before she died. In this three-volume work, first published in 1845, Meryon presents letters he received from her and recounts their conversations, giving a remarkable insight into the woman he describes as 'out of humour with all mankind'. Volume 1 covers events between 1823 and 1837, beginning with her letters imploring him to visit.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":51019658330385,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":51019660558609,"sku":"NIN9781108052085","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52537802096913,"sku":"NLS9781108052085","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1108052088.jpg?v=1751111906"},{"product_id":"persia-and-the-persian-question-book-george-nathaniel-curzon-9781108080859","title":"Persia and the Persian Question","description":"Following his election to Parliament, George Nathaniel Curzon (1859-1925) embarked on extensive travels and research in Asia, spending several months in Persia in 1889-90. In 1809 he was commissioned by the African Association to discover the source of the River Niger. In preparation for this journey, for which he needed to pass as a Muslim, Burckhardt spent two years exploring and studying Arabic and Islamic law in Aleppo, before travelling widely in Arabia and Egypt. This book provides 'a view of Arabian life and manners in every degree, from the Bedouin camp to the populous city', but the most striking passages describe the ruins of Petra, and especially its sumptuously carved Nabataean tombs. Burckhardt also records his frustration at not being able to explore freely and make notes, but these activities would have laid him open to suspicion of being a spy or an infidel, and almost certain death.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":51097348964625,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":51097354305809,"sku":"NIN9781108069588","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52151299932433,"sku":"NLS9781108069588","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1108069584.jpg?v=1751205858"},{"product_id":"travels-along-the-mediterranean-and-parts-adjacent-book-robert-richardson-9781108076029","title":"Travels along the Mediterranean and Parts Adjacent","description":"After qualifying as a physician, Robert Richardson (1779 1847) joined the household of the earl of Belmore, and accompanied him and his family on a tour of the eastern Mediterranean in his yacht the Osprey, converted from a captured American schooner. Volume 2 of this work largely focuses on Tischendorf's time in Israel. He writes about Jesus' crucifixion and Golgotha's significance, and gives an historical account of Jerusalem as the centre of all religions. The book, based on his extensive fieldwork, is split into two parts. Part 1 examines the trade routes and road systems - both Roman and Byzantine - of Asia Minor. It discusses Hellenism and Orientalism and assesses the reliability of ancient topographical accounts of the area, including the Peutinger Table, the itineraries and a number of Ptolemy's geographical comments. Part 2 examines the political divisions of Asia Minor into cities and bishoprics. A number of maps and tables are included. Ramsay's authoritative survey opened up the historical study of the geography and topography of Asia Minor in many disciplines. His work has been used widely by archaeologists, classicists, and New Testament scholars. Still not fully superseded, it remains a key text in historical geography.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":51208930853137,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":51208933441809,"sku":"NIN9781108014533","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52129506623761,"sku":"NLS9781108014533","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1108014534.jpg?v=1750791150"},{"product_id":"travels-in-the-east-book-constantin-von-tischendorf-9781108014793","title":"Travels in the East","description":"This work, first published in 1847, is an account by Constantin von Tischendorf (1815-74) of his journeying in the Middle East at the beginning of the 1840s. The German biblical scholar then travels to the monastery of Saint Catherine on Mount Sinai, where he makes the extraordinary discovery of a previously unknown fourth-century manuscript, one of the main witnesses to the Septuagint, before reaching the main goal of his long journey - Jerusalem. In the previous year, sisters Agnes Smith Lewis and Margaret Dunlop Gibson had discovered the Sinai Palimpsest, the earliest-known Syriac version of the Gospels. The purpose of the Bensly's mission was to aid them in transcribing and deciphering the Palimpsest. Beginning with the party's arrival in Cairo, the book describes the preparation for the trip, their journey across the desert, and life in the monastery. However, relations between the members of the party deteriorated; Gibson and Lewis wrote their own accounts of the expedition (also available in this series), and Mrs Bensly's narrative is defensive of the role of her husband, who died days after their return to England.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":51270550421777,"sku":"NIN9781108043373","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52129282687249,"sku":"NLS9781108043373","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1108043372.jpg?v=1750709101"},{"product_id":"arabic-proverbs-book-john-lewis-burckhardt-9781108022880","title":"Arabic Proverbs","description":"John Lewis Burckhardt (1784-1817) was a Swiss explorer who is best remembered for his rediscovery of the ancient city of Petra in modern Jordan. He was the first European translator of The Thousand and One Nights, which he published between 1704 and 1717. A hugely influential work, it provided the basis for later translations in English and German. Between 1670 and 1675, Galland worked as a librarian and private secretary to the marquis de Nointel, who had been appointed as the French ambassador in Istanbul. This book, first published in 1881, is the record of Galland's daily life at the embassy. It is a personal diary covering the period 1672 3 that includes details of Galland's research and of the manuscripts he purchased on behalf of the ambassador. An introduction by Charles Schefer (1820 98) provides details of the political and diplomatic relations between France and Turkey at the time.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":51309680623889,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":51309682786577,"sku":"NIN9781108042390","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52148205584657,"sku":"NLS9781108042390","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":53226817847569,"sku":"NGR9781108042390","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1108042392.jpg?v=1750983592"},{"product_id":"ride-through-asia-minor-and-armenia-book-henry-c-barkley-9781108037570","title":"A Ride through Asia Minor and Armenia","description":"Published in 1891, this book recounts the author's adventures on a journey in 1878 that took him from Bucharest, through Asia Minor and back to Trabzon on the Black Sea coast. This book, published in 1904 as the Hejaz railway was being built, is a summary of earlier explorations in the Arabian peninsula, by both Muslim and European travellers. Hogarth's first visit to Arabia was not made until 1916, when he travelled to Jeddah with 10,000 in gold to finance the revolt; this book is instead based on his extensive reading of travel literature, included in a bibliography for each chapter. It is thus interesting for its historiographical analysis as well as a background to Hogarth's subsequent political involvement with the region.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52125584916753,"sku":"NLS9781108042185","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9781108042185.jpg?v=1757466777"},{"product_id":"travels-in-mesopotamia-book-james-silk-buckingham-9781108042147","title":"Travels in Mesopotamia","description":"Cornish-born writer, traveller and controversialist James Silk Buckingham (1786 1855) spent much of his early life as a sailor in the Atlantic and the Mediterranean and went on to publish accounts of his extensive travels to India, Palestine and Persia. Their initial desire to travel to the Holy Land was encouraged by their Presbyterian minister. Setting out with their former teacher, Grace Blyth, in 1868, they travelled across Europe to Greece, Turkey, Egypt and Palestine. In this 1870 account, Lewis vividly describes the discomfort of long-distance travel, especially for women, and their encounters with the people they met on the way. At Constantinople they were struck by the beauty of Hagia Sophia, and saw whirling dervishes. Gell describes his experiences of many visits to the Peloponnese over a period of twenty years, during which the Greek movement for independence from the Ottoman Empire was gathering momentum and widespread support in Europe. Written partly in response to a request to 'give us anything but your dull maps and measures', the book does not discuss archaeological sites in detail but rather records impressions of the lives of the Greek and Turkish inhabitants in the period immediately before the outbreak of war. Frescobaldi and his companions went first to Venice, whence they sailed to Alexandria in Egypt, in order to visit St Catharine's monastery on the way to Jerusalem. Frescobaldi describes the churches and holy places in great detail, and then describes their route home, via Damascus and Beirut, thence by ship (and after enduring a terrible storm) to Venice. His literary career began with an account of his ventures into the desert of Algeria, where he had journeyed seeking a salubrious winter climate. This 1873 volume, one of his many popular works on the Biblical Lands, records his adventures and discoveries east of the Dead Sea. Its engaging narrative recounts the hazards and vexations of travel amongst the local tribes, as well as the sites Tristram visited, many of them biblical (with corresponding quotations from scripture), and many previously unvisited by Europeans.
