These narratives illuminate pivotal aspects of the carefully selected classic readings that follow. Providing a unique view of American life during the Great Depression and Second World War, each 'Fields of Vision' volume includes an introduction to the life of the photographer by a leading author or journalist, and 50 evocative images selected from their work. Transporting the viewer to American homes, farms and streets in the 1930s and 1940s, they also offer a glimpse of a new narrative and intimate style that was later to blossom on the pages of 'LOOK' and 'LIFE' magazines. For many Americans of the pre-television age, the diversity and complexity of their country was defined by the lenses of these men and women.  Gordon Parks was born in 1912 in Fort Scott, Kansas, the youngest of fifteen children in a poor tenant-farming family. He was working odd jobs in Minnesota when he saw the work of FSA photographers in a magazine and was inspired to buy a camera. Parks early pictures landed him a position as Roy Stryker's apprentice in 1942. A man of intelligence, drive, creativity, and fascinating contradictions, Straub overcame personal challenges and inevitable comparisons to his charismatic predecessor and friendly Republican rival, Tom McCall, to have a lasting impact on Oregon and the nation. Charles Johnson shares insights into Straub’s significant legacy, focusing on his leading role in the state’s financial and environmental issues and his influence on McCall. Johnson also reveals much of Straub’s warm personal story, along with his secret struggles, including his battle with depression while Governor.  Standing at the Water’s Edge offers rich descriptions of other intriguing political figures of the time as well, capturing the flavour of what has been called Oregon’s political “golden age” of the sixties and seventies—created in part by the symbiotic relationship between Straub and McCall—and describing how and why it ended. It illuminates the history not only of the church and court of England, but also of France and the papal curia in these years. The text of this revised edition differs considerably from its predecessors: it is based on a complete re-collation of the manuscript, and on a number of other copies of the documents it cites; the translation has also been adjusted at many points. There is a full introduction, which describes the manuscript, Hugh's background and purpose in writing, the chapter of York, and the issues at stake with Canterbury and Scotland. The textual apparatus and the notes to the text are entirely new. The editors' detailed and scholarly revision of this valuable source greatly increases our understanding of church and state under the Normans.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":50863753691409,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":50863755297041,"sku":"GOR008272544","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52336495296785,"sku":"NLS9780198222132","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0198222130.jpg?v=1751195129"},{"product_id":"fight-the-stigma-book-charles-johnson-9780359412921","title":"Fight the Stigma!","description":null,"brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":51001346556177,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":51001350095121,"sku":"NIN9780359412921","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0359412920.jpg?v=1751134407"}],"url":"https:\/\/www.worldofbooks.com\/en-gb\/collections\/charles-johnson.oembed?page=7","provider":"World of Books ","version":"1.0","type":"link"}
