They were the heroes of the Great Plains, and they were the villains, too.Royal B. Hassrick here attempts to describe the ways of the people, the patterns of their behavior, and the concepts of their imagination. Uniquely, he has approached the subject from the Sioux's own point of view, giving their own interpretation of their world in the era of its greatest vigor and renown -the brief span of years from about 1830 to 1870.  In addition to printed sources, the author has drawn from the observation and records of a number of Sioux who were still living when this book was projected, and were anxious to serve as links to the vanished world of their forebears.  Because it is true that men become in great measure what they think and want themselves to be, it is important to gain this insight into Sioux thought of a century ago. Apparently, the most significant theme in their universe was that man was a minute but integral part of that universe. The dual themes of self-expression and self-denial reached through their lives, helping to explain their utter defeat soon after the Battle of the Little Big Horn. When the opportunity to resolve the conflict with the white man in their own way was lost, their very reason for living was lost, too.  There are chapters on the family and the sexes, fun, the scheme of war, production, the structure of the nation, the way to status, and other aspects of Sioux life.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"US \/ GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":49766330532113,"sku":"CIN0806121408G","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ WELL_READ \/ SBYB","offer_id":49993902424337,"sku":"CIN0806121408A","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ VERY_GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":50752429130001,"sku":"CIN0806121408VG","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":50870229303569,"sku":"GOR006661881","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":51007572541713,"sku":"NIN9780806121406","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0806121408.jpg?v=1767348470"},{"product_id":"aztec-thought-and-culture-book-miguel-leon-portilla-9780806122953","title":"Aztec Thought and Culture","description":"For at least two millennia before the advent of the Spaniards in 1519, there was a flourishing civilization in central Mexico. During that long span of time a cultural evolution took place which saw a high development of the arts and literature, the formulation of complex religious doctrines, systems of education, and diverse political and social organization.  The rich documentation concerning these people, commonly called Aztecs, includes, in addition to a few codices written before the Conquest, thousands of folios in the Nahuatl or Aztec language written by natives after the Conquest. Adapting the Latin alphabet, which they had been taught by the missionary friars, to their native tongue, they recorded poems, chronicles, and traditions.  The fundamental concepts of ancient Mexico presented and examined in this book have been taken from more than ninety original Aztec documents. They concern the origin of the universe and of life, conjectures on the mystery of God, the possibility of comprehending things beyond the realm of experience, life after death, and the meaning of education, history, and art. The philosophy of the Nahuatl wise men, which probably stemmed from the ancient doctrines and traditions of the Teotihuacans and Toltecs, quite often reveals profound intuition and in some instances is remarkably -modern.-  This English edition is not a direct translation of the original Spanish, but an adaptation and rewriting of the text for the English-speaking reader.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"US \/ GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":49780624687377,"sku":"CIN0806122951G","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ VERY_GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":50097139974417,"sku":"CIN0806122951VG","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ WELL_READ \/ SBYB","offer_id":50111111102737,"sku":"CIN0806122951A","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":51007725928721,"sku":"NIN9780806122953","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":52108760154385,"sku":"GOR007319380","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0806122951.jpg?v=1767355085"},{"product_id":"victorio-and-the-mimbres-apaches-book-dan-l-thrapp-9780806116457","title":"Victorio and the Mimbres Apaches","description":"The author interweaves the story of Victorio, an American Indian warrior, into the history of the Mimbrenos and their relationship with other Apache bands. The Spanish mission system, established along the Pacific Coast, required that local Indians abandon their traditional homes, live near the missions, follow Christian religious customs, and work in the fields to raise European crops and livestock. Unable or unwilling to adapt, many of these coastal people fled to the interior, where they re-ordered their lives. Spaniards, and later Mexicans, probed the San Joaquin Valley in search of these runaways and the horses they often took with them. In league with the Miwoks and Yokuts of the interior, who had never been colonised, the former mission Indians resisted these incursions vigorously. By the time of the American conquest, they were raiding Mexican ranchos for horses and mules. George Phillips demonstrates that the decline of the rancheros began, not with the American military conquest, but as early as 1830, when raids by Indians increased in numbers and intensity. He explains why the Indians raided the coastal ranchos and describes the damage they inflicted on the Mexican economy.  Assigning Indians their rightful place in the history of California before the Gold Rush, Phillips portrays these people not as passive mission refugees but as active members of independent, evolving societies. This book should be of value to students of California history, the history of the American West, and Indian history, as well as to anthropologists interested in early interactions between indigenous people and white intruders.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"US \/ GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":49796183490833,"sku":"CIN0806124466G","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ VERY_GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":51717117182225,"sku":"CIN0806124466VG","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0806124466.jpg?v=1751395372"},{"product_id":"conquest-of-apacheria-book-dan-l-thrapp-9780806112862","title":"The Conquest of Apacheria","description":"Apacheria ran from the Colorado to the Rio Grande and beyond, from the great canyons of the North for a thousand miles into Mexico. Dorsey, this book is a reinterpretation of the Cheyenne's world-view, shamanism and major cultural features. It is the product of the author's blending of the principles of action anthropology with those of cognitive anthropology, his long association with the Southern Cheyennes and his close personal relationship with Edward Red Hat, the Cheyenne Keeper of the Sacred Arrows, who instructed him in Cheyenne religion for more than ten years. Along with important oral testimony, this book makes use of the great volume of works in the ethnography, ethnohistory, prehistory and linguistics of the northern plains, the Subarctic and northern Siberia. The core of this book is a reconstruction of the Massaum, the most elusive of Cheyenne tribal ceremonies, extinct since 1927. In a detailed interpretation of the ritual, the author defines the Massaum as an earth-giving ceremony. The gift of this ceremony between 500 and 300 BC in what is now South Dakota, brought about the formation of the Cheyennes as a tribal unit with the right to occupy a large region of the grasslands.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"US \/ GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":50095213642001,"sku":"CIN0806125772G","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":50778389741841,"sku":"GOR012110535","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":52814261813521,"sku":"GOR011683395","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0806125772.jpg?v=1750849744"},{"product_id":"powhatan-indians-of-virginia-book-helen-c-rountree-9780806121567","title":"Powhatan Indians of Virginia","description":"\u003cp\u003eAmong the aspects of Powhatan life that Helen Rountree describes in vivid detail are hunting and agriculture, territorial claims, warfare and treatment of prisoners, physical appearance and dress, construction of houses and towns, education of youths, initiation rites, family and social structure and customs, the nature of rulers, medicine, religion, and even village games, music, and dance.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eRountree's is the first book-length treatment of this fascinating culture, which included one of the most complex political organizations in native North American and which figured prominently in early American history.\u003c\/p\u003e","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"US \/ GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":50190718206225,"sku":"CIN0806121564G","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ VERY_GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":50553949061393,"sku":"CIN0806121564VG","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0806121564.jpg?v=1751362349"},{"product_id":"apache-navaho-and-spaniard-book-jack-d-forbes-9780806126869","title":"Apache, Navaho and Spaniard","description":"Based on extensive research in Spain, Mexico, Texas, New Mexico and California, Apache, Navaho and Spaniard tells of the Spanish advance in the 17th century into northern Mexico and the Southwest, and of the American Indian response. Owing to their isolated and inaccessible location, 300 miles north of the Arctic Circle, they were one of the last Inuit groups to be contacted by Western explorers, missionaries and fur traders. Since contact, however, they have been transformed from a nomadic and independent, hunting-based society to one dependent upon southern material goods, such as televisions, radios, snowmobiles, ATVs and permanent residential housing provided by the Government of the Northwest Territories. Anthropologist Richard G. Condon witnessed many of these social, economic and material changes during his 18 years of research in the Holman community. With translator\/research associate Julia Ogina and the Elders of Holman, Condon chronicles the history of the Holman region by combining these direct observations of community change with extensive archival research and oral history interviews with community elders. This chronicle begins with a discussion of the prehistory of the Holman region, and moves to early and late contact periods, and concludes with a description of modern community life. The interviews represent first-person accounts from Holman residents, including elders, as well as artists now famed for their printmaking. Each chapter opens with a reproduction of one of the striking Holman prints, depicting scenes from traditional Copper Inuit life. From abstracts of polar bear tracks on the ocean ice to the sadness on the face of an old woman for whom starvation was a frequent companion, these drawings reflect bravery, stoicism and the enjoyment of simple everyday pleasures. Richard G. This ethnographic sketch, written with a minimum of anthropological jargon and illustrated with color photographs, explore the effects of Hispanic domination on the people of Amatian, a pseudonymous remote village of about 600 conservative Nahuas in the tropical forests of northern Veracruz. Several key questions inspired anthropologist Alan R. Sandstrom to live among the Nahuas in the early 1970s and again in the 1980s. How have the Nahuas managed to survive as a group after nearly 500 years of conquest and domination by Europeans? How are villages like Amatlan organized to resist intrusion, and what distortions in village life are caused by the marginal status of Mexican Indian communities? What concrete advantages does being a Nahua confer on citizens of such a community? Sandstrom describes how Nahua culture is a coherent system of meanings and at the same time a subtle and dynamic strategy for survival. In the 1980s, however, the villagers presented themselves as less Indian because increased urban wage migration and profound changes in local ecnomic conditions diminished the value of the Indian identity. Long-term participant-observation research has yielded new information about village-level Nahua society, culture change, magico-religious beliefs and practices, Protestantism among Mescamerican Indians, and the role of ethnicity in maintaining and transforming traditional culture. Where possible, the villagers' own words are used in telling their history and culture.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":50608790307089,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":50608790634769,"sku":"GOR014012283","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0806123990.jpg?v=1751296697"},{"product_id":"navahos-book-ruth-murray-underhill-9780806103419","title":"Navahos","description":"Volume 43 in the Civilization of the American Indian Series A must for every student of the Southwest and fine reading for anyone interested in the history of his country. - American Historical Review She has brought together, from an amazing variety of sources, a complete history of The People . . . This ethnographic sketch, written with a minimum of anthropological jargon and illustrated with color photographs, explore the effects of Hispanic domination on the people of Amatian, a pseudonymous remote village of about six hundred conservative Nahuas in the tropical forests of northern Veracruz. Several key questions inspired anthropologist Alan R. Sandstrom to live among the Nahuas in the early 1970s and again in the 1980s. How have the Nahuas managed to survive as a group after nearly five hundred years of conquest and domination by Europeans? How are villages like Amatlan organized to resist intrusion, and what distortions in village life are caused by the marginal status of Mexican Indian communities? What concrete advantages does being a Nahua confer on citizens of such a community? Sandstrom describes how Nahua culture is a coherent system of meanings and at the same time a subtle and dynamic strategy for survival. In the 1980s, however, the villagers presented themselves as less Indian because increased urban wage migration and profound changes in local ecnomic conditions diminished the value of the Indian identity. Long-term participant-observation research has yielded new information about village-level Nahua society, culture change, magico-religious beliefs and practices, Protestantism among Mescamerican Indians, and the role of ethnicity in maintaining and transforming traditional culture. Where possible, the villagers' own words are used in telling their history and culture.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"US \/ WELL_READ \/ SBYB","offer_id":53037712933137,"sku":"CIN0806124032A","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":53498430325009,"sku":"CIN0806124032G","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9780806124032.jpg?v=1768789611"},{"product_id":"dress-clothing-of-the-plains-indians-book-ronald-p-koch-9780806113722","title":"Dress Clothing of the Plains Indians","description":"A study of the dress of the Plains Indians which counters the misconception that all the tribes of the central region dressed alike. The Cherokees enacted their first written law in 1808 in Georgia. In succeeding years the leaders and tribal councils of the southeastern and Oklahoma groups wrote a constitution, established courts, and enacted laws that were in accord with the old tribal values but reflected and accommodated to the whites' legal system. Thanks to the great gift of Sequoyah-his syllabary-the Cherokees were well versed in their laws, able to read and interpret them from a very early time. The system served the people well. It endured until 1898, when the federal government abolished the tribal government. The author provides a brief review of Cherokee history and explains the circumstances surrounding the stages of development of the legal system. Excerpts from editorials in the Cherokee Phoenix and the Cherokee Advocate, letters, and tribal documents give added insight into the problems the Cherokees faced and their efforts to resolve them. Of particular interest is a series of charts explaining the complex Cherokee spirit system of crimes (or deviations) and the punishments meted out for them. A legal historian of Osage and Cherokee heritage, Rennard Strickland is considered a pioneer in introducing Indian law into university curriculum. He has written and edited more than 35 books and is frequently cited by courts and scholars for his work as revision editor in chief of the Handbook of Federal Indian Law. Strickland has been involved in the resolution of a number of significant Indian cases. He was the founding director of the Center for the Study of American Indian Law and Policy at the University of Oklahoma. He is the first person to have served both as president of the Association of American Law Schools and as chair of the Law School Admissions Council. He is also the only person to have received both the Society of American Law Teachers (SALT) Award and the American Bar Association's Spirit of Excellence Award. Strickland was the dean of the law school from 1997 to 2002.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":53503855821073,"sku":null,"price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":53503856148753,"sku":"CIN0806112271G","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9780806112275.jpg?v=1778076039"},{"product_id":"pueblo-animals-and-myths-book-hamilton-a-tyler-9780806112459","title":"Pueblo Animals and Myths","description":null,"brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":53623584719121,"sku":null,"price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":53623585079569,"sku":"CIN080611245XG","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9780806112459.jpg?v=1780632023"}],"url":"https:\/\/www.worldofbooks.com\/en-gb\/collections\/civilization-of-american-indian-s-book-series.oembed","provider":"World of Books ","version":"1.0","type":"link"}
