Theology Today Apocalyptic Spirituality- Treatises and Letters of Lactantius, Adso of Montier-en-Der, Joachim of Fiore, the Spiritual Franciscans, Savonarola translation and introduction by Bernard McGinn preface by Marjorie Reeves Just as Jesus Christ came with true signs, but cloaked and hidden because of the likeness of sinful human nature so that he was hardly recognized as the Christ by even a few, so too the seventh king will come with false signs and will be hidden and cloaked because of his appearance of spiritual justice, so that only a few will be able to recognize that he is the appearance spirituality justice, so that only a few will be able to recognize that he is the Antichrist. Joachim of Fiore, 1135-1202 Amen. Come, Lord Jesus (Apoc. 22:20). The significance of these closing words of the New Testament for later Christian spirituality is the subject of this volume. This book makes available major texts in the Christian apocalyptic literature form the 4th to the 16th centuries. The apocalyptic tradition is that of traditional prophecy based on revelation and concerned with the end of the world. Even an age such as ours characterized by its scientific and rationalistic outlook has strong elements of literal apocalypticism found in fundamentalist and charismatic groups. The popular success of Hal Lindsey's The Late Great Planet Earth is evidence of this. Also the present hunger for apocalypse has adopted a variety of secular disguises typified by Heilbroner's An Inquiry into the Human Prospect. Contemporary theologians like Kasemann, Pannenberg, Rahner, Moltmann and others have devoted much of their work to the meaning of apocalyptic thought. This is a collection which can show the traditional roots of this contemporary phenomenon. Dr. Bernard McGinn says in his introduction, these treatises and letters have been chosen because of the way in which they manifest how beliefs about the imminent end affected the lives of their adherents... Perhaps the task for us today is that by seeing how the lives of Lactantius, the monk Adso, Joachim of Fiore, The Spiritual Franciscans and Savonarola were affected by their apocalyptic vision we can recognize how our lives are being affected by the contemporary prophetic sense of the end of history.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"US \/ GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":49509261639953,"sku":"CIN0809122421G","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ WELL_READ \/ SBYB","offer_id":49946322305297,"sku":"CIN0809122421A","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":50283369496849,"sku":"GOR002813735","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ WELL_READ \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":51478749413649,"sku":"GOR014296426","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ VERY_GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":53110767780113,"sku":"CIN0809122421VG","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0809122421.jpg?v=1751042970"},{"product_id":"john-of-the-cross-book-kieran-kavanaugh-ocd-9780809128396","title":"John of the Cross","description":"...a milestone in American religious publishing. A collaborator with St. Teresa of Avila in the reform movement that attempted to forge a new style of religious life, dedicated to recollection yet distinct from both the enthusiasm of the alumbrados and the sterility of the conventual Carmelites, John was no stranger to suffering. New Catholic World Pursuit of Wisdom and Other Works by the Author of the Cloud of Unknowing, The translated, edited and annotated by James A. Walsh, S.J. preface by George A. Maloney, S.J. For it is by passing beyond yourself and all other things, and so purifying yourself of all worldly, carnal and natural love in your affection, and of everything that can be known according to its own proper form in your intellect; it is in this way, when all things are done away with, that you shall be carried up in your affection and above your understanding to the Substance beyond all substance, the radiance of the divine darkness. The Pursuit of Wisdom This volume contains six works written by the great fourteenth-century mystic, the anonymous author of The Cloud of Unknowing. Presented here are: The Pursuit of Wisdom (the author's translation of Richard of St. Victor's treatise Benjamin Minor), his translation of Pseudo-Dionysius' mystical theology entitled Denis' Hidden Theology, his free development of St. Bernard's homilies The Discernment of Spirits, and the treatises The Assessment of Inward Stirrings, A Letter on Prayer, and A Letter of Private Direction often entitled The Book of Privy Counseling. In his masterly preface, George A. Maloney states that Ut is in the burning love of the author for Jesus Christ as indwelling and risen that techniques are seen always as subservient to the essential Christian teaching of mystical union with Christ and through him with the Indwelling Trinity. The fruit of such 'darkness' spirituality is seen as an outward movement toward active service on behalf on other human beings to co-create a better world through a loving synergy with the indwelling Trinity.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49548785287441,"sku":"GOR013375401","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49760360005905,"sku":"GOR007617991","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":49991409303825,"sku":"CIN0809129728G","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ WELL_READ \/ SBYB","offer_id":50052715217169,"sku":"CIN0809129728A","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ WELL_READ \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":50683184939281,"sku":"GOR007776085","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":53072345137425,"sku":"NIN9780809129720","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0809129728.jpg?v=1750745337"},{"product_id":"jacob-boehme-book-peter-erb-9780809121021","title":"Jacob Boehme","description":"\"Precisely the dimension of our heritage that most needs to be recovered...I cannot imagine a more timely publishing venture.\" Huston Smith Thomas J. The collaboratively written, multi-part introduction locates Vincent and Louise within the framework of the spirituality of seventeenth-century France. This rich overview not only provides solid background information on each of the founders but also offers a true sense of their spirituality and practicality, insights into the complementary nature of their relationship, and an understanding of their legacy, which deeply influenced Elizabeth Ann Seton, Rosalie Rendu, D.C. and Frederick Ozanam. Following the insightful introduction are the original rules of the communities that Vincent and Louise founded, the Congregation of the Mission and the Daughters of Charity, commentaries on these rules, and a selection of other writings from both founders. All selections breathe the very spirit of the founders in terms of both the spiritual and the practical. Vincent and Louise teach much about the enduring gifts of simplicity, humility and love. Their own journey to the poor and--even more significantly--their Christ-centered reflection shed light on the possibility of a deeper response to the sufferings and isolation of the poor, vulnerable and marginalized in today's society.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49555208929553,"sku":"GOR009845958","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":51424371900689,"sku":"CIN0809135647G","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0809135647.jpg?v=1751363050"},{"product_id":"early-kabbalah-book-joseph-dan-9780809127696","title":"The Early Kabbalah","description":"Blessed and exalted is God, glorious in power. Kiener preface by Moshe Idel In the late twelfth century, at the height of the Middle Ages that saw the flowering of the mystical element in Christendom, the Rabbinic Judaism of southern Europe was transformed by the eruption of new, Gnostic attitudes and symbolism. This new movement, known as Kabbalah (literally the 'Tradition'), was characterized by the symbol of the ten sefirot. By means of the sefirotic imagery, virtually the whole of everyday life was linked to the cosmic dimension in a novel and highly original fashion that stressed the dynamic, evolutionary element of the Godhead and the synergistic relationship between the human will and the action of God on earth. During a century of creativity, a detailed system of symbols and concepts was created by the author of the Sefer ha-Bahir, the Kabbalists of Provence, the Iyyun circle, and the mystics of Provence and Castile that set the stage for the great Kabbalists of the Zohar generation.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ WELL_READ \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49556776059153,"sku":"GOR013749563","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49620556677393,"sku":"GOR008221029","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":50917607702801,"sku":"GOR006577407","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ VERY_GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":50943233556753,"sku":"CIN0809127695VG","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":51008203194641,"sku":"NIN9780809127696","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":52817205985553,"sku":"CIN0809127695G","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0809127695.jpg?v=1750914756"},{"product_id":"hildegard-of-bingen-book-mother-columba-hart-9780809131303","title":"Hildegard of Bingen","description":"...these translations thus supersede former ones...if the introductions, translations, and other apparatus of the rest of the series are of the same high quality, the series will be indispensable for most libraries. Newman prefaced by Caroline Walker Bynum I saw a great mountain the color of iron, and enthroned on it. One of such great glory that it blinded my sight. On each side of him there extended a soft shadow, like a wing of wondrous breadth and length. Before him, at the foot of the mountain, stood an image full of eyes on all sides, in which, because of those eyes, I could discern no human form. Hildegard of Bingen(1098-1179) Hildegard of Bingen, twelfth-century German nun, mystic, prophet and political moralist, was widely consulted as an oracle and wrote prolifically on doctrinal matters, as well as on secular matters like medicine, She publicly preached monastic reform, founded two nunneries, and was embroiled in the politics surrounding popes and anti-popes. Scivias, her major religious work, consists of twenty-six visions, which are first se down literally as she saw them, and are the explained exegetically. A few of the topic covered in the visions are the charity of Christ, the nature of the universe, the kingdom of God, the fall of man, sanctification, and the end of the world. Special emphasis is given to the sacraments of marriage and the Eucharist, in response to the Cathar heresy. As a group the visions form a theological summa of Christian doctrine. At the end of the Scivias are hymns of praise and a short play, probably an early draft of Ordo virtutum, the first known morality play. Hildegard is remarkable for being able to unite vision with doctrine, religion with science, charismatic jubilation with prophetic indignation, and longing for social order with quest for social justice. This volume elucidates the life of medieval women, and is a striking example of a special form of Christian spirituality.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49556846510353,"sku":"GOR004478435","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":49852161655057,"sku":"CIN0809131307G","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ VERY_GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":50095259025681,"sku":"CIN0809131307VG","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ WELL_READ \/ SBYB","offer_id":50336253509905,"sku":"CIN0809131307A","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":50644369604881,"sku":"GOR005253042","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":50984518844689,"sku":"NIN9780809131303","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ LIKE_NEW \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":51267619914001,"sku":"GOR007812090","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0809131307.jpg?v=1751363042"},{"product_id":"catherine-of-siena-book-suzanne-noffke-op-9780809122332","title":"Catherine of Siena","description":"The books are beautifully, almost lavishly presented and scholars of the highest caliber have taken part in the work of editing.... This is a comprehensive attempt to make the spiritual tradition of large areas of mankind more generally accessible to the ordinary interested reader. A. M. Allchin in Church Times Catherine of Siena-The Dialogue translation and introduction by Suzanne Noffke, O.P., preface by Giuliana Cavallini If you have received my love sincerely without self-interest, you will drink your neighbor's love sincerely. It is just like a vessel that you fill at the fountain. If you take it out of the fountain to drink, the vessel is soon empty. But if you hold your vessel in the fountain while you drink, it will not get empty: indeed, it will always be full. Catherine of Siena, 1347-1380 This is the crowning spiritual work of the only woman other than Teresa of Avila to be granted the title of Doctor of the Roman Catholic Church. This volume was simply called my book by the fourteenth-century Italian saint. The aim of her book (one of the first books to see print in Spain, Germany, Italy, and England), says Dr. Noffke in her Foreword, was the instruction and encouragement of all those whose spiritual welfare was her concern. Catherine was a mystic whose plunge into God plunged her deep into the affairs of society, Church and the souls who came under her influence. Professor Noffke goes on to call The Dialogue a great tapestry to which Catherine adds stitch upon stitch until she is satisfied that she has communicated all she can of what she has learned of the way of God. In this, the sixth centenary of the great Dominican's death, we live in a time so badly in need of her sense of institutional reform as flowing from Divine truth, love and charity. Dr. Noffke says: In the opening pages of The Dialogue Catherine presents a series of questions or petitions to God the Father each of which receives a response and amplification. There is the magnificent symbolic portrayal of Christ as the bridge. There are specific discussions of discernment, tears (true and false spiritual emotion), truth, the sacramental heart ('mystic body') of the Church, divine providence, obedience.... It is not so much a treatise to be read as it is a conversation to be entered into with earnest leisure and leisurely earnest.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49566152261905,"sku":"GOR007818879","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ VERY_GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":50000701980945,"sku":"CIN0809122332VG","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ WELL_READ \/ SBYB","offer_id":50159311421713,"sku":"CIN0809122332A","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":50633265971473,"sku":"GOR002065189","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ LIKE_NEW \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":50969837109521,"sku":"GOR014152202","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":50984518091025,"sku":"NIN9780809122332","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":52105152987409,"sku":"CIN0809122332G","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0809122332.jpg?v=1750745322"},{"product_id":"julian-of-norwich-book-edmund-colledge-osa-9780809120918","title":"Julian of Norwich","description":"...these translations thus supersede former ones...if the introductions, translations, and other apparatus of the rest of the series are of the same high quality, the series will be indispensable for most libraries. Library Journal JULIAN OF NORWICH - SHOWINGS translated and introduced by Edmund Colledge, O.S.A., and James Walsh, S.J. As truly as God is our Father, so truly is God our Mother. What, do you wish to know your Lord's meaning in this thing. Know it well, love was his meaning...Who reveals it to you? Love. What did he reveal to you? Love. Why does he reveal it to you? For Love. Julian of Norwich, 1342-c.1423 Julian, an anchoress who lived in solitude in Norwich, England in the late 14th century, received the 16 showings or revelations of God's love in a series of experienced visions. The first version was a short text. The second, longer version was apparently written some years after the first, when she had had time to pray and reflect about the teachings God had given her. In the light of their thirteen years of work on the critical edition of Showings, Colledge and Walsh give us this first modern English rendering from the place of Julian's teaching in Catholic Spirituality. The editors present Julian as a skilled theologian and master of rhetorical style. Jean Leclercz, the noted monk, writer, and medievalist, in his preface addresses himself to the question, Why is this an important work today? Showings reveals a Julian who experienced God directly and not self-consciously as our mother. Her revelations of the feminine side of God represent a significant contribution to the tradition. Her graphic visions of the humanity of Christ are marked by vivid imagery and detail. But the special appeal of Julian lies in her theology of the all- embracing fullness of divine love. Julian is certainly a warm and approachable companion for the mystical journey.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"US \/ GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":49568487375121,"sku":"CIN0809120917G","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49586487066897,"sku":"GOR002764470","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ WELL_READ \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49653724184849,"sku":"GOR007982522","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49870210728209,"sku":"GOR004449338","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ VERY_GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":50182642237713,"sku":"CINB007CWSFZ6VG","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ WELL_READ \/ SBYB","offer_id":50315473846545,"sku":"CINB007CWSFZ6A","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":51554464235793,"sku":"NIN9780809120918","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0809120917.jpg?v=1750785501"},{"product_id":"augustine-of-hippo-book-mary-t-clark-9780809125739","title":"Augustine of Hippo","description":"The very imposing and very welcome Classics of Western Spirituality(TM)series.should be in every theological collection of any depth. Clark preface by Goulven Madec You have made us to be toward you, and our heart is restless until it rests in you Augustine of Hippo (354-430) Augustine of Hippo (354-430), bishop, philosopher, and Doctor of the Church whose thought molded the Western theological tradition, is clearly one of the most influential figures in the history of the Church. At the heart of his brilliant philosophical and theological speculation is his spirituality-a spirituality founded on the reality of the soul's experience of the Trinity in the depths of its interiority. This book is a collection of his writings, which in every sense must be considered true classics of spirituality in the West. Included are excerpts from Confessions, On the Trinity, The City of God, and Homilies on the Psalms along with the complete texts of the Rule of St. Augustine, On Seeing God, and On the Presence of God. In speaking of Augustine's relevance for our time, Paul VI said: If St. Augustine were alive today, he would speak as he spoke a thousand and more years ago. Why? Because he really personifies a humanity that believes, that loves Christ and our beloved God.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49577673982225,"sku":"GOR006113321","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ LIKE_NEW \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49577675260177,"sku":"GOR013723270","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49628675178769,"sku":"GOR007009576","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":50265533350161,"sku":"CIN0809125730G","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ WELL_READ \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":50900241875217,"sku":"GOR002076032","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ VERY_GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":50913608794385,"sku":"CIN0809125730VG","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ WELL_READ \/ SBYB","offer_id":50942554374417,"sku":"CIN0809125730A","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0809125730.jpg?v=1750818549"},{"product_id":"ignatius-of-loyola-book-george-e-ganss-sj-9780809132164","title":"Ignatius of Loyola","description":"This volume includes Ignatius' (1491-1556) complete Autobiography, complete Spiritual Exercises, selections from the Constitution of the Society of Jesus and some of Ignatius' nearly 7,000 letters.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49585442390289,"sku":"GOR002492591","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":49772812304657,"sku":"CIN0809132168G","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ WELL_READ \/ SBYB","offer_id":50423470784785,"sku":"CIN0809132168A","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":51383406002449,"sku":"NIN9780809132164","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ VERY_GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":51694288961809,"sku":"CIN0809132168VG","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":52093886333201,"sku":"GOR003511227","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0809132168.jpg?v=1751452488"},{"product_id":"luther-s-spirituality-book-philip-d-w-krey-9780809139491","title":"Luther's Spirituality","description":"Presents a selection of texts translated by Martin Luther, which represent the ways Luther understood how one believed and behaved as a Christian. For in fact he who hears the one reading receives the song that is recited as being about him, and either, when he is convicted by his conscience, being pierced, he will repent, or hearing of the hope that resides in God, and of the succor available to believers-how this kind of grace exists for him-he exults and begins to give thanks to God.\" Athanasius (c. 295–373) Athanasius was a major figure of 14th-century Christendom. As the Bishop of Alexandria, spiritual master and theologian, he led the Church in its battle against the Arian heresy. Athanasius' The Life of Antony is one of the foremost classics of Christian asceticism. It tells the spiritual story of St. Antony, the founder of Christian monasticism. Written at the request of the desert monks of Egypt to provide \"an ideal pattern of the ascetical life,\" it immediately became astonishingly popular. This work contributed greatly to the establishment of monastic life in Western Christianity. From a literary perspective, it created a new Christian genre for the lives of saints. The Letter to Marcellinus is an introduction to the spiritual sense of the Psalms. The Psalms are presented as a variety of attitudes which coexist in a truly harmonious and whole sense of prayer. William A. Clebsch of Stanford University, President of the American Academy of Religion, in his Preface to this volume, says, \"This translator's fidelity to the texts ensures that the reader receives in these works Athanasius' meaning, so far as feasible in the order of his thoughts and in the equivalence of his words.\" †","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49608606023953,"sku":"GOR004734340","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":49701959794961,"sku":"CIN0809122952G","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ WELL_READ \/ SBYB","offer_id":50007251747089,"sku":"CIN0809122952A","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ WELL_READ \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":50267799585041,"sku":"GOR009262790","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ VERY_GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":50603828969745,"sku":"CIN0809122952VG","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":50984518222097,"sku":"NIN9780809122950","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0809122952.jpg?v=1751201596"},{"product_id":"meister-eckhart-vol-2-book-edmund-colledge-9780809123704","title":"Meister Eckhart , Vol. 2","description":"The very imposing and very welcome Classics of Western Spirituality(TM) series...should be in every theological collection of any depth. Dr. L on-Portilla in his introduction says: These Native American Classics of Spirituality when properly dealt with are no longer to be regarded as alien in the sense that there cannot exist a consubstantial bridge between them and the spiritual masters of the West....A realm of unsuspected wisdom will then begin to manifest itself. Fernando Horcasitas in his fine Preface calls on the reader to become captured by the beauty of the lines and to leave his mind less cluttered with stereotypes of the native American. He suggests opening the book at random to find verses here and there, composed in the night, in the wind, that will bring ease to his heart as he walks between the abyss on one side and the ravine on the other. And those who are weary of all the conflicting elements in our present realities, who long to shatter 'this sorry state of things entire', will find heart if they can get a glimmering--even though it be faint--of the jade and turquoise the Indian poet sought and found in his songs.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"US \/ GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":49677007290641,"sku":"CIN0809122316G","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49787999256849,"sku":"GOR008217846","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49921424425233,"sku":"GOR005410663","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ WELL_READ \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":51716072472849,"sku":"GOR003027227","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ WELL_READ \/ SBYB","offer_id":53112967561489,"sku":"CIN0809122316A","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0809122316.jpg?v=1750850397"},{"product_id":"john-cassian-book-colm-luibheid-9780809126941","title":"John Cassian","description":".clearly a must for all libraries.and for all readers interested in spirituality. This is what will lead you not to the knowledge that puffs a man up but to the lore which illumines through the achievement of love. John Cassian (c. 365-c. 435) At the turn of the sixth century the Mediterranean world was witnessing the decline of Roman rule that had formed the bedrock of its civil order. During the chaos of those years, there arose in the deserts of Egypt and Syria monastic movements that offered men and women a radical God-centered alternative to the present society. Among the most eloquent interpreters of this new movement to western Europe was John Cassian (c. 365-c.435). Drawing on his own early experience as a monk in Bethlehem and Egypt, he journeyed to the West to found monasteries in Marseilles and the region of Provence. Included in this volume is Cassian's masterpiece, the Conferences, which is a study of the Egyptian ideal of the monk. The new translation by Colm Luibheid is coupled with an insightful introduction by the distinguished Regius Professor Emeritus of Modern History, Cambridge University, Owen Chadwick, who writes of Cassian's achievement: Like the Rule of St. Benedict, his work was a protection against excess and a constant recall to that primitive simplicity where eastern spirituality met western.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49681292394769,"sku":"GOR003019992","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":49723890958609,"sku":"CIN080912694XG","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ VERY_GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":49932457050385,"sku":"CIN080912694XVG","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":51183395930385,"sku":"NIN9780809126941","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ WELL_READ \/ SBYB","offer_id":53564343189777,"sku":"CIN080912694XA","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/080912694X.jpg?v=1751435492"},{"product_id":"mechthild-of-magdeburg-book-frank-tobin-9780809137763","title":"Mechthild of Magdeburg","description":"2012 Reprint of Original 1953 Edition. The only complete codex of this work is in the library of Einsiedeln in Switzerland, where the translator spent three years translating the codex from a South German translation of 1344. The book is a collection of visions, revelations, thoughts and letters written in alternating prose and poetry. The variety of its contents includes practical advice on daily conduct, as well as the most sublime descriptions of high mystical experience. Her works were early translated into Latin, and were almost certainly known to Dante, whose vision of heaven, hell and purgatory went on to have a great influence in Western Literature. Her influence is traceable in the Paradiso and by some scholars she is thought to have been the Matilda in the earthly paradise. Her works remains to this day a classic text of Christian mysticism.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"US \/ GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":49707699994897,"sku":"CIN0809137763G","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":50878531928337,"sku":"GOR008138090","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":51248865673489,"sku":"NIN9780809137763","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ WELL_READ \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":51376721232145,"sku":"GOR014245932","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ WELL_READ \/ SBYB","offer_id":53380222451985,"sku":"CIN0809137763A","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0809137763.jpg?v=1750703052"},{"product_id":"ibn-al-arabi-book-rwj-austin-9780809123315","title":"Ibn Al Arabi","description":"Classics in a classic collection...clearly a must for all libraries, from the university to the small town, and for all readers interested in spirituality... Austin, preface by Titus Burckardt It is from God, so hear And to god do you return When you hear what I bring, learn Then with understanding see The details in the whole And also see them as part of the whole. Then give it to those Who seek it, and stint not. This is the mercy that Encompasses you; so extend it. Ibn Al-'Arabi, 1165-1240 Called by Moslems the greatest master, Ibn Al-'Arabi was a Sufi born in twelfth-century Spain. The Bezels of Wisdom was written during the author's later years and was intended to be a synthesis of his spiritual doctrine. Bezel means a setting in which a gem, engraved with one's name, is set to make a seal ring. The setting in which Ibn Al-'Arabi has placed his spiritual wisdom are the lives of the prophets. It was in Damascus that he had the vision that prompted him to write this book. He describes it in his preface: I saw the Apostle of God in a visitation...He had in his hand a book and he said to me, 'This is the book of the bezels of Wisdom; take it and bring it to men that they might benefit from it.' The book portrays the wisdom of love through Abraham, of the unseen through Job, of light through Joseph, of intimacy through Elias and so on. Ibn Al-'Arabi invites us in these pages to explore the inner spiritual meanings of the Quran, its heartful meanings. In one of his poems he stated, Love is the creed I hold: wherever turns His camels, Love is still my creed and faith.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49725868212497,"sku":"GOR009073999","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":50264311791889,"sku":"CIN0809123312G","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ VERY_GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":50816448430353,"sku":"CIN0809123312VG","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":51287452221713,"sku":"NIN9780809123315","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":52625069506833,"sku":"GOR008073519","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0809123312.jpg?v=1751233319"},{"product_id":"maximus-the-confessor-book-rev-george-c-berthold-9780809126590","title":"Maximus the Confessor","description":"indispensable for most libraries. Maximus Confessor (c.580-662) Maximus is called the Confessor because of his sufferings and labors for the true faith. During the seventh century when the monothelite heresy (belief that Christ had only one will--a divine one) plagued the Church, Maximus eloquently demonstrated that Christ had both human and divine natures. Writing in the introduction to this volume Jaroslav Pelikan highlights the relevance of Maximus' writings for today: It was the genius of Maximus Confessor that, in a measure that has been granted only to a few, he was fully bilingual, affirming by means of negation and speaking both the language of spirituality and the language of theology with equal fluency. Origen (c.-----254) Origen was born in Alexandria close to the end of the second century. His life spanned the turbulent years during the collapse of the Roman Empire. He sought to rescue and transform what was best of the Roman world and to translate the Christian spiritual quest into a language intelligible to the thoughtful and educated nonbeliever of his day. Origen is one of the first and most important of the Christian mystics, and many of the great themes of spiritual literature can be traced back to him. Von Balthasar, the eminent Swiss theologian, in his preface says of him, As towering a figure as Augustine and Aquinas.his work is aglow with the fire of a Christian creativity which even in the greatest of his successors burned merely with a borrowed flame. Luis de Le n (1527-1591) The Names of Christ is a masterpiece of the Golden Age of Spain. Written in the style of a pastoral novel, the work is a meditation on the philosophical and theological significance of the names of Christ. The Catholic Historical Review In one series, the original writings of the universally acknowledged teachers of the Catholic, Protestant, Eastern Orthodox, Jewish and Islamic traditions have been critically selected, translated and introduced by internationally recognized scholars and spiritual leaders. ANGELA OF FOLIGNO-COMPLETE WORKS translated, with an introduction by Paul Lachance, O.F.M. preface by Romana Guarnieri Suddenly, a divine word sounded in my soul: My love for you has not been a hoax. These words struck me a mortal blow. For immediately the eyes of my soul were opened and I saw that what he had said was true. I saw his acts of love, everything that the Son of God had done, all that he had endured in life and in death-this suffering God-man-because of his inexpressible and visceral love. Seeing in him all the deeds of true love, I understood the perfect truth of what he had said, that his love for me had not been a hoax, but that he had loved me with a most perfect and visceral love. I saw, on the other hand, the exact opposite in myself, because my love for him had never been anything but playing games, never true. Angela of Foligno (c. 1248-1309) The superabundant one, the saint of the double abyss, the queen of the explorers of the beyond, the one who lies, the bedded, swooning saint, the teacher of theologians--thus have various commentators characterized the Blessed Angela of Foligno, one of the most outstanding, yet still too little known, representatives of the Franciscan and Christian mystical tradition. The dramatic story of Angela's passionate love affair with the suffering God-man, how she is transformed and led into the deep abysses of the Trinitarian life, is recorded in the Memorial, the first part of her Book, which she dictated to her Franciscan scribe and confessor, Brother Arnaldo. The searing intensity of her account is unmatched in mystical literature. After her immersion in the fathomless depths of the Trinity, Angela emerged as a spiritual mother, gathering around her a network of disciples. The second part of her Book, the Instructions, contains her teachings in the form of letters and exhortations to her spiritual progeny, along with accounts of further visions and locutions, a testament, and an epilogue. This is the first translation into English of Angela's Book in its entirety. The translation is based on the new critical edition of the Latin text. A comprehensive introduction sets it in the context of the times, and summarizes Angela's inner journey, spirituality, and influence.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"US \/ GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":49726901190929,"sku":"CIN0809133660G","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":50751627264273,"sku":"GOR008801031","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":51007871811857,"sku":"NIN9780809133666","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0809133660.jpg?v=1751296873"},{"product_id":"francisco-de-osuna-book-mary-e-giles-9780809121458","title":"Francisco de Osuna","description":"Bargains in books are rare today, but one would be hard put to find in American publishing anything superior to these in content and format. Just to love the exercise of recollection is a gift from God. Francisco de Osuna (c.1492-1540) Francisco de Osuna (c. 1492-c. 1540) was born in the Seville region of Spain on the eve of that country's golden age of mysticism that saw the sublime achievements of Teresa of Avila and John of the Cross. Osuna entered the Order of Friars Minor of the Regular Observance when Cardinal Jimenez de Cisneros was spearheading a reform movement that encouraged believers to nourish a simple, Christ-centered, inner spirituality. In the midst of the controversy over the nature of true interior prayer that raged during the 1520's between the advocates of recollection (recogimiento) and those who practiced abandon (dejamiento), Osuna wrote a series of maxims as a practical guide for recollection. These he arranged into a series of Spiritual Alphabets, the third of which appears in this volume. Blessed be the Newborn Who today made the humanity young again. Blessed be the Fruit Who Bowed Himself down for our hunger. Blessed be the Gracious One Who suddenly enriched all of our poverty and filled our need. Ephrem the Syrian (c.306-373) Ephrem was born in the Mesopotamian city of Nisibis toward the end of the third century. An outpost of the Roman Empire, Nisibis and its Christian citizens were to be formed by the reign of Constantine and by the doctrines of the Council of Nicea. There, in the context of a large and sophisticated Jewish population and numerous Gnostic sects, Ephrem sought to defend orthodox Nicene Christianity. His teaching and writing made him an influential voice in the life of Syriac Christianity through the peaceful years of Constantine's patronage, the years of persecution after 361 under Emperor Julian, and the conflict between Persians and Romans which ultimately forced Ephrem to move to Edessa where he stayed until his death in 373. It was as a poet that Ephrem made his greatest impact. Writing in isosyllabic verses called madrashe, he attained a literary brilliance that won him a place of prominence not only in his own tradition, but also in the Coptic, Ethiopian, Armenian, and Arabic traditions as well. His hymns, praised in the West by Jerome, had a formative influence on the development of medieval religious drama in Europe. Blending Greek forms with his native style, he wove a highly crafted poetry of rich symbolism, attempting to fit the events of his day into a cosmic framework of God's redemptive act in Christ. Ephrem's combination of elements of Stoicism and Middle Platonism with Christian belief in a form reminiscent of the great second century apologists produced a corpus that speaks of his own literary genius and even more eloquently of the majesty and beauty of the divine source of all true poetry. Here, in a fresh and lively translation, are the Hymns on the Nativity, Hymns Against Julian, and the Hymns on Virginity and the Symbols of the Lord in which that voice may be heard closely and appreciated, wondered at, and enjoyed.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"US \/ WELL_READ \/ SBYB","offer_id":49727922831633,"sku":"CIN0809130939A","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":50256373055761,"sku":"CIN0809130939G","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":50495326290193,"sku":"GOR007731756","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":51007892750609,"sku":"NIN9780809130931","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ VERY_GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":51714350940433,"sku":"CIN0809130939VG","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0809130939.jpg?v=1751076158"},{"product_id":"devotio-moderna-book-john-van-engen-9780809129621","title":"Devotio Moderna","description":"...a milestone in American religious publishing. Geert Grote The Modern Devotion appears in nearly every textbook account of medieval spirituality as the characteristic expression of later medieval religious life. One written testimony to this Modern Devotion, The Imitation of Christ, was to prove the single most influential devotional book in the history of Western Christianity. Yet apart from the Imitation itself, the spiritual works that taught this New Devotion have rarely been translated into English and have never been gathered in a single place. With the publication of this volume, Van Engen has made available the essential sources of the devotional movement that later medieval people looked upon as modern or new. The movement originated with a Dutchman of patrician stock, Master Geert Grote, and was carried forward in communities that came to be known as the Brothers and Sisters of the Common Life. Eventually they acquired counterparts in orders, the regular canons and canonesses of the Windesheim congregation. This volume contains several works by the founder himself, Geert Grote, as well as representative lives of the Brothers and Sisters, translated for the first time from Latin and medieval Dutch. To illustrate the range of spiritual teaching these communities developed, Van Engen has chosen to translate works from several different genres: sayings that captured their religious insights, statutes that guided their collective lives, exercises that guided their individual lives, and collations or sermons that inspired their new devotion. Finally, Van Engen offers a modern translation of Gerard Zerbolt of Zutphen's Spirituality Ascensions as a kind of religious summation of the entire movement. Though little known today, it proved the single most widely read work inside the movement itself.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"US \/ GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":49728295239953,"sku":"CIN0809129620G","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":50206425219345,"sku":"GOR007614586","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ VERY_GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":50270409097489,"sku":"CIN0809129620VG","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0809129620.jpg?v=1751042981"},{"product_id":"pseudo-macarius-book-george-a-maloney-sj-9780809133123","title":"Pseudo-Macarius","description":"The writings of Pseudo-Macarius, a Syrian monk of the 4th century, bring to Western Christianity a holistic heart spirituality that offers a necessary complementarity to the head spirituality of the West. Birgitta of Sweden (c. 1303-1373) The Catholic history of Scandinavia is rich in its legacy of saints and blesseds: Canute, Eric, Hallvard, Henry, Olaf, Sigfrid, Thorlac and many others. One Swedish saint has achieved worldwide fame: Birgitta Birgersdotter, born into wealth and aristocracy, a happily married mother, a religious foundress, a mystical visionary and the fines Scandinavian writer of the Middle Ages. Like Joan of Arc, Birgitta experienced a repeated and insistent visionary call to public action. Her task was to reawaken the Church's attention to the essential things of God; and, in her vividly colorful writings, she has left to the world an exemplary record of her own perseverance in prayer. Knut Westman, a major authority on St. Birgitta, says of her: Birgitta is of another kind of religion: personal, vocational, mystical, recognized by its strong ethical attitude, its visions of God's work through history, and the consciousness of being called to task...Such a life cannot be explained as a product of known factors. Contained in this volume are four key documents of Birgittine literature: the eyewitness Life of Blessed Birgitta, the complete Fifth and Seventh books of her Revelations, and her Four Prayers. Reason: But who are you, Love? says Reason. Are not you one of the Virtues with us even though you be above us? Love: I am God, says Love, for Love is God and God is Love, and this Soul is God by the condition of Love. Thus this precious beloved of mine is taught and guided by me, without herself, for she is transformed into me, and such a perfect one, says Love, takes my nourishment. Marguerite Porete (?-1310) We know very little about Marguerite Porete, only that she was a beguine from Hainaut who was burned at the stake as a relapsed heretic in 1310. She might have been a solitary itinerant beguine who expounded her teachings to interested listeners. She wrote The Mirror of Simple Souls in Old French sometime between 1296 and 1306. The format of the text is a dialogue among allegorical figures who represent the nature of the relation between the soul and God. The fundamental structure of the discourse is grounded in traditional Neoplatonist philosophy, and courtly language is used to express theological abstractions. The Mirror is a theological treatise which analyzes how love in human beings is related to divine love, and how the human soul by means of this relation may experience a lasting union of indistinct ion with God in this life. This is the first modern English translation of the complete text. The translation is based on a critical edition of the Old French and Latin versions of The Mirror. The introduction sets The Mirror in the maelstrom of political and ecclesiastical tensions and conflicts, and offers an analysis of the French beguine's thought. †","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"US \/ GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":49754363363601,"sku":"CIN0809134276G","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":50028582502673,"sku":"GOR004256562","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":50984519008529,"sku":"NIN9780809134274","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ VERY_GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":51528719859985,"sku":"CIN0809134276VG","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ WELL_READ \/ SBYB","offer_id":52105173467409,"sku":"CIN0809134276A","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0809134276.jpg?v=1751201604"},{"product_id":"johann-arndt-book-peter-erb-9780809121922","title":"Johann Arndt","description":"...of fundamental importance to any student or scholar interested in the development and dimensions of the religious ideas and experiences of man. This volume gives fresh attention to the theological and mystical dimensions of his thought. The introduction casts new and exciting light on the development of Cusa's theology of spirituality. The book also provides for the first time in one volume an English translation of Cusa's basic mystical corpus: On Learned Ignorance; On the Hidden God; On Seeking God; On the Vision of God; and On the Summit of Contemplation. Another unique feature is the annotated glossary of key Cusan terms that accompanies the texts. Cusa's writings reveal a remarkable imaginative and gifted theologian who anticipated contemporary questions of ecumenicity and pluralism, empowerment and reconciliation, and tolerance and individuality. For all his intellectual power, he never closes his thought into a system. He is a significator and a conjecturer. He keeps pointing beyond his own words and beyond even his prized formulae and labels, including learned ignorance and coincidence of opposites. The Name Jesus Christus-the Truth knows this well-blossoms within me during the season of Advent with especially sweet grace and I can do nothing except what is given me with Jesus and from Jesus and in Jesus. Margaret Ebner (1291-1351) With these words, Margaret Ebner concludes her Revelations, making a moving statement of Christ's mystical presence to her through repetition of the Holy Name. Margaret was a Dominican nun and mystic at the Monastery of Maria Medingen near Dillingen in Germany. Within the confines of the monastic enclosure she lived a deeply spiritual life of prayer that issued forth into mystical union with Christ. Renowned in her own time for her holiness, she was the center of the Friends of God-a group of deeply religious layfolk, priests and nuns at every level of society from Queen Agnes of Hungary to laysister at Medingen. Her letter exchange with her spiritual director and friend, Henry of Nordlingen, is said to be the oldest exchange of letters (in the modern sense) in the German language. Her Revelations record the events of her spiritual journey for over fifty years of her life and reveal her gradual growth in holiness and deeper conversion to Christ. This is the first translation of the entire Middle High German text of the Revelations into any modern language. Margot Schmidt and Leonard Hindsley have brought the age of Margaret Ebner to life by illuminating the historical and religious details of the late Middle Ages for the benefit of the modern reader. Through the translation and its introduction the hidden life of a remarkable and holy woman is made known to the modern world. Margaret lived in turbulent times in Church history and had to contend with matters of conscience when caught between the rival forces of Pope John XXII and the Emperor Louis the Bavarian. John Donne (1572-1631) The poetry of John Donne is one of the enduring treasures bequeathed to posterity by early seventeenth-century England. The keen wit and refined sensibilities of the Renaissance poet made his metaphysical musings classics of English literature. Kenneth L. Woodward Religion Editor of Newsweek Magazine in Publishers Weekly Bonaventure-The Soul's Journey into God, The Tree of Life, The Life of St. Francis translation and introduction by Ewert Cousins, preface by Ignatius Brady, O.F.M. But if you wish to know how these things come about ask grace not instruction, desire not understanding, the groaning of prayer not diligent reading, the Spouse not the teacher, God not man, darkness not clarity, not light but the fire that totally enflames and carries us into God by ecstatic unctions and burning affections. This fire is God and his furnace is in Jerusalem... Bonaventure, 1217-1274 Long before Bonaventure was called The Prince of Mystics by Leo XIII or The Seraphic Doctor by John Gerson, he was known throughout the Christian world as The Devout Teacher. Professor Ewert Cousins says in his introduction, In the history of Western Spirituality, Bonaventure holds a central and pivotal position. The 13th century friar, professor at the University of Paris, minister general of the Franciscan Order, cardinal and advisor to popes, played a major role in the spiritual ferment of the high Middle Ages...when Islamic, Jewish and Christian spirituality were flourishing-he produced one of the richest syntheses of Christian spirituality. Although cosmic in its scope, it was distinctively Christian in its content, grounded in the doctrine of the Trinity and devotion to the humanity of Christ. Within Christianity he achieved a striking integration of Eastern and Western elements. The three works contained in this volume offer the core of his vision. In The Soul's Journey into God, considered Bonaventure's masterpiece, he takes the six-winged Seraph as the symbol for the six stages of contemplation in which the created world is seen as a reflection of God. The Tree of Life is a simple meditation on the life of Jesus, based on the Gospel accounts in which Christ is seen as the Tree of Life on whose branches blossom such virtues as humility, piety, patience, constancy and justice. The Life of St. Francis was the official biography commissioned by the Franciscan Order in 1260. The editor of this volume, Dr. Ewert Cousins, is Professor of Theology, Fordham University and Visiting Professor, Columbia University. He is Director of the Spirituality Graduate Program at Fordham. Ignatius Brady, O.F.M., who wrote the preface to this volume, is one of the world's leading authorities on Bonaventure and early Franciscan spirituality. He is Prefect of the Theology Section of the Franciscan research center, Collegio S. DeCatanzaro, introduction by George Maloney, S.J., preface by Basile Krivocheine It shines on us without evening, without change, without alteration, without form. It speaks, works, lives, gives life and changes into light those whom it illuminates. We bear witness that \"God is light,\" and those to whom it has been granted to see Him have all beheld Him as light. Those who have received Him as light, do so because the light of His glory goes before Him, and it is impossible for Him to appear without light. Those who have not seen His light have not seen Him, for He is the light, and those who have not received the light have not yet received grace. Those who have received grace have received the light of God and have received God, even as Christ Himself, who is the light, has said, \"I will live in them and move among them.\" SYMEON THE NEW THEOLOGIAN (942-1022) Father George Maloney in his Introduction to this volume focuses directly on the special importance of St. Symeon and on how similar the religious situation of his era is to our own. \"Concretely, the battle of two opposing views of theology centered around St. Symeon and his mystical apophatic approach of the experiencing of God immanently present to the individual, as opposed to the \"head trip\" scholastic theology as represented by Archbishop Stephen of Nicomedia, the official theologian at the court of Constantinople. Stephen represented the abstract, philosophical type of theologizing while Symeon strove to restore theology to its pristine mystical tendency as a wisdom infused by the Holy Spirit into the Christian after he had been thoroughly purified through a rigorous asceticism and a state of constant repentance.\" This great spiritual master of Eastern Christianity was an abbot, spiritual director of renown, theologian and important church reformer. These Discourses which form the central work of his life were preached by St. Symeon to his monks during their morning Matins ritual. They treat such basic spiritual themes as repentance, detachment, renunciation, the works of charity, impassiblity, remembrance of death, sorrow for sins, the practice of God's commandments, mystical union with the indwelling Trinity, faith and contemplation. †","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"US \/ WELL_READ \/ SBYB","offer_id":49790026481937,"sku":"CIN0809122308A","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ VERY_GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":50264873042193,"sku":"CIN0809122308VG","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":50984517992721,"sku":"NIN9780809122301","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":51662568718609,"sku":"CIN0809122308G","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":53394731565329,"sku":"GOR006833803","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0809122308.jpg?v=1750745321"},{"product_id":"jewish-mystical-autobiographies-book-morris-m-faierstein-9780809138760","title":"Jewish Mystical Autobiographies","description":"Paulist Press deserves credit for adding this new dimension to interfaith dialogue. The Jewish Spectator In this remarkable volume in the Classics of Western Spirituality(TM) are the mystical autobiographies-unusual in themselves for the Jewish tradition-of two influential Jewish thinkers, Rabbi Hayyim Vital and Rabbi Yizhak Isaac Safrin of Komarno. Now translated for the first time in English, these texts will capture the attention of historians, theologians, and anyone studying Judaism. Rabbi Hayyim Vital (1542-1620) was the foremost disciple of R. Isaac Luria, one of the most important mystics in 16th century Judaism and founder of the major school of mysticism known as Lurianic kabbalah. Vital was the most influential transmitter of Luria's teachings, and the author of a full-fledged mystical autobiography called The Book of Visions. Vital saw himself as the reincarnation of many of the important figures in Jewish history associated with messianic hopes and expectations. The second text in this volume, The Book of Secrets, is by Rabbi Yizak Isaac Safrim of Komarno (1806-1874), an important Hasidic master. Like Vital, he saw himself as a potential messianic figure who had direct access to the mysteries of heaven. The Book of Secrets is divided into two parts. The first part, The Book of Visions, modeled on Vital's work, consists of incidents in his life and visionary experiences. The second part, the Deeds of the Lord, contains stories about the Baal Shem Tov, the founder of Hasidism.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"US \/ GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":49849446924561,"sku":"CIN080913876XG","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ VERY_GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":53555750502673,"sku":"CIN080913876XVG","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/080913876X.jpg?v=1751233345"},{"product_id":"nicodemos-of-the-holy-mountain-book-peter-a-chamberas-9780809130382","title":"Nicodemos of the Holy Mountain","description":"\"...a milestone in American religious publishing.\" —New Catholic World Nicodemos of the Holy Mountain: A Handbook of Spiritual Counsel translation and foreword by Peter A. Studying under the monk Ierotheos Voulismas at the Evangelical school in Smyrna, he was introduced to the Kollyvades monks of Mount Athos whose strict life and zeal for holiness, combined with a love of learning, made them the leading biblical and patristic scholars in the Byzantine world of the late eighteenth century. Nicodemos entered the monastery on Mount Athos at twenty-six, and devoted himself to a life of asceticism and learning. It is no exaggeration to say that he was among the most influential Orthodox writers of the last two centuries. His writings on apologetics, hagiography, ascetical and pastoral theology, ethics, patristics and liturgies comprise over two hundred works. His most famous work is the Philokalia, which is a compilation of patristic writings on the spiritual life. Included in this volume, in a new translation, is A Handbook of Spiritual Counsel, which was composed during a self-imposed exile on the island of Skyropoula. That work, written during the time of the Age of Enlightenment in western Europe, shares an exalted vision of human nature, but a vision that proceeds from the truths of revelation as interpreted by the Greek Fathers, and not from Descartes. A.M. Allchin Pseudo-Dionysius: The Complete Works translation by Colm Luibheid forward, notes, and translation collaboration by Paul Rorem preface by Ren Roques introductions by Jaroslav Pelikan, Jean Leclercq, and Karlfried Froehlich Indeed the inscrutable One is out of the reach of every rational process. Nor can any words come up to the inexpressible Good, this One, this Source of all unity, this supra existent Being. Mind beyond mind, word beyond speech, it is gathered up by no discourse, by no intuition, by no name. Pseudo-Dionysius (5th or 6th century) There are few figures in the history of Western Spirituality who are more enigmatic than the fifth or sixth-century writer known as the Pseudo-Dionysius. The real identity of the person who chose to write under the pseudonym of Dionysius the Areopagite is unknown. Even the exact dates of his writings have never been determined. Moreover the texts themselves, though relatively short, are at points seemingly impenetrable and have mystified readers over the centuries. Yet the influence of this shadowy figure on broad range of mystical writers from the early Middle Ages on is readily discernible. His formulation of a method of negative theology that stresses the impotence of humans' attempt to penetrate the cloud of unknowing is famous, as is his meditation on the divine names. Despite his influence, relatively few attempts have been made to translate the entire corpus of his written into English. Here in one volume are collected all of the Pseudo-Dionysius's works. Each has been translated from the Migne edition, with reference to the forthcoming G ttingen critical edition of A.M. Ritter, G. Heil, and B. Suchla. To present these works to the English-speaking public, an outstanding team of six research scholars has been assembled. The lucid translation of Colm Luibheid has been augmented by Paul Rorem's notes and textual collaboration. The reader is presented a rich and varied examination of the main themes of Dionysian spirituality by Ren Roques, an incisive discussion of the original questions of the authenticity and alleged heresies in the Dionysian corpus by Jaroslav Pelikan, a comprehensive tracing Dionysius'sinfluence on medieval authors by Jean Leclercq, and a survey by Karlfried Froehlich of the reception given the corpus by Humanists and sixteenth-century Reformers.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"US \/ GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":49875924943121,"sku":"CIN0809128381G","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ VERY_GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":49930221977873,"sku":"CIN0809128381VG","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":50028691947793,"sku":"GOR005957801","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ WELL_READ \/ SBYB","offer_id":50041353208081,"sku":"CIN0809128381A","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ LIKE_NEW \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":50555536539921,"sku":"GOR010989090","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ WELL_READ \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":50898842222865,"sku":"GOR010180152","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":50984518615313,"sku":"NIN9780809128389","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":51104474792209,"sku":"GOR004918188","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0809128381.jpg?v=1751011231"},{"product_id":"gregory-of-nyssa-book-abraham-j-malherbe-9780809121120","title":"Gregory of Nyssa","description":"Here is an award-winning, new translation that brings to light Gregory's complex identity as an early mystic. Spiritual Life. Nizam Ad-Din Awliya: Morals for the Heart translated and annotated by Bruce B. Lawrence introduction by Khaliq Ahmad Nizami preface by Simon Digby He next spoke briefly about the ascension of the Prophet Muhammad. A dear one who was present asked: How did the Ascension take place? The master- may God remember him with favor-replied: From Mecca to Jerusalem was the Night Journey (isra; Q.17: 1), from Jerusalem to the first heaven was the Ascension (mi'raj), and from the first heaven to the place of 'two bows' length' (Q.53: 7) was the Ascent (ciraj). Then that dear one elaborated his question, asking: Some claim that the Ascension was bodily, others that it was spiritual. How can it be both? On the blessed tongue of the master-may God remember him with favor-came this verse: Imagine the best, ask not for details Fawa'id al-Fu'ad (ca. 1325) The first and foremost representative of a literary genre that attained great popularity among South Asian Sufis, Fawa'id al-Fu'ad or Morals for the Heart, contains the conversations of a major Indian saint, Shaykh Nizam ad-din Awliya (d. 1325). Though recorded by a poet-disciple Amir Hasan, they were edited by the saint himself, and reflect his chaste, understated tone. In its style Morals for the Heart exemplifies the virtue of Persian prose as a didactic instrument. It communicates the numerous skills, the diverse moods, and the remarkable sensibilities of its austere subject. It captures the spirit of Shaykh Nizam ad-din's towering presence, his absolute loyalty to his spiritual master, his taste for poetry and music, and his empathy with the sufferings of others. We see him crying and laughing and praying. Passionate in his quest for God, he has left in Morals for the Heart a spiritual legacy that still animates and satisfies others who never knew him. Here Muslims discover one more treasure from their pre-modern past. Here non-Muslims encounter an Islam that brings peace and spiritual insight. Here all humanity is stilled by the saga of a Muslim exemplar who enshrined sacrifice and love as the highest goals of human existence when framed by faith in God.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49883892252945,"sku":"GOR013806463","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":51205532680465,"sku":"CIN0809104512G","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0809104512.jpg?v=1750882869"},{"product_id":"francis-de-sales-jane-de-chantal-book-wendy-m-wright-9780809129904","title":"Francis de Sales, Jane de Chantal","description":".a milestone in American religious publishing. It is an expiation of sin, a bridge across temptation, a bulwark against affliction. It wipes out conflict, is the work of angels, and is the nourishment of everything spiritual. John Climacus (c. 579-649) The Ladder of Divine Ascent was the most widely used handbook of the ascetic life in the ancient Greek Church. Popular among both lay and monastics, it was translated into Latin, Syriac, Arabic, Armenian, Old Slavonic, and many modern languages. It was written while the author (who received his surname from this book) was abbot of the monastery of Catherine on Mount Sinai. As reflected in the title, the ascetical life is portrayed as a ladder which each aspirant must ascend, each step being a virtue to be acquired, or a vice to be surrendered. Its thirty steps reflect the hidden life of Christ himself. This work had a fundamental influence in the particularly the Hesychastic, Jesus Prayer, or Prayer of the Heart movement.
