Based upon the kibbutz educational system, which has reinstituted the family, Geiger and Fischer propose a model of educational change for consideration in the United States. This model is designed to strengthen the nuclear family while improving the prospects of disadvantaged, anomic, and unattached youth. Geiger and Fischer examine, within a Rawlsian perspective, several child-rearing institutions affecting children. Justice as fairness would consider a child-rearing institution and its inequalities as fair if there are no alternative arrangements under which the prospects of least-advantaged children could be improved. Among these least-advantaged children are those who are neglected, abused, and stripped of self-respect. As the nuclear family disintegrates, the authors ask whether it can fulfill its child-rearing function. Utilizing a self-report study conducted on socialization and delinquency in Israel as well as several other observational studies, the authors demonstrate that in a more egalitarian structure such as the kibbutz, least-advantaged children have more opportunities to develop into autonomous responsible individuals. For Americans, the kibbutz educational system shows new paths for change from nursery school through high school that would allow for greater bonds between the family, school, work, and the community. An emerging sense of community would also stimulate the moral and intellectual growth of disadvantaged youth. This book is recommended to researchers and policy makers in the areas of education, delinquency, and social welfare.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52136471363857,"sku":"NLS9780313294587","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9780313294587.jpg?v=1757554058"},{"product_id":"feeding-infants-in-four-societies-book-beverly-winikoff-md-mph-9780313257988","title":"Feeding Infants in Four Societies","description":"Changes in breastfeeding practices are affecting the health and survival of millions of Third World Children and the fertlity of their mothers. In his introduction, Hans Buechler reviews significant previous research and outlines the theoretical framework of the present volume. The primary focus of the chapters that follow is the experience of migrants and of household members who remain at home, analyzed within the total context of migration in both host and sender countries. The effects of migration on family economy and kin relationships are examined in detail. Among the issues explored are economic decision-making processes in migrant households, the implications of migration for family landholding, ties between migrants and family left behind, and kin, friendship, and neighborhood networks. Other topics considered are the working and social environment experienced by migrants; labor policies and restrictions relating to employment, work permits, and workers' families; and the problems connected with returning home. The final section, a bibliographic essay by Judith-Maria Buechler, helps to put the various individual contributions in a wider perspective.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52150594601233,"sku":"NLS9780313232367","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9780313232367.jpg?v=1757610608"},{"product_id":"revolutions-in-americans-lives-book-robert-v-wells-9780313230196","title":"Revolutions in Americans' Lives","description":null,"brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52151170597137,"sku":"NLS9780313230196","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9780313230196.jpg?v=1757612427"},{"product_id":"social-history-of-american-family-sociology-1865-1940-book-john-mogey-9780313227677","title":"A Social History of American Family Sociology, 1865-1940","description":null,"brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":52334723268881,"sku":null,"price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52334723793169,"sku":"NLS9780313227677","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9780313227677.jpg?v=1758157777"},{"product_id":"three-different-worlds-book-frances-rothstein-9780313225949","title":"Three Different Worlds","description":null,"brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":52335408316689,"sku":null,"price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52335409103121,"sku":"NLS9780313225949","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9780313225949.jpg?v=1758159939"},{"product_id":"family-and-work-book-merlin-b-brinkerhoff-9780313237034","title":"Family and Work","description":null,"brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":52337010802961,"sku":null,"price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52337011196177,"sku":"NLS9780313237034","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9780313237034.jpg?v=1758165254"},{"product_id":"women-in-the-family-and-the-economy-book-ratna-ghosh-9780313222757","title":"Women in the Family and the Economy","description":null,"brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":52337631101201,"sku":null,"price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52337631854865,"sku":"NLS9780313222757","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9780313222757.jpg?v=1758167257"},{"product_id":"child-rearing-and-reform-book-bogna-kot-9780313245008","title":"Child-Rearing and Reform","description":"The author analyzes the nature of child-rearing in eighteenth-century Poland and its linkage to the reform movements that swept the country after the first partition in 1772. She finds that family behavior cannot be separated from politics in Polish society: in fact, education and child-rearing were major issues in the reform movement of the 1770s. Lorence-Kot shows where Poland lagged behind Western Europe, and how various reformers proposed to advance Polish society through new methods of raising children in the upper classes. The resistant attitudes of Polish parents are examined in detail, as are their attitudes toward their children, corporal punishment, schooling, and other child-related issues. The author explores the push for a wholesale adoption of French models of child-care and education, as well as the later reforms which met with the modern demands of European society.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":52351263506705,"sku":null,"price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52351263998225,"sku":"NLS9780313245008","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9780313245008.jpg?v=1758180904"},{"product_id":"family-welfare-book-david-r-green-9780313323287","title":"Family Welfare","description":"The history of welfare provision has generally focused on the rise of the so-called welfare state and institutional provision for the poor. Recent studies have begun to look beyond the state to other ways in which assistance, care, and support were provided in the past, but the focus remains primarily on the poor. This work widens our understanding of welfare by focusing not on the poor but on those who have some wealth. It draws attention to the importance of family as part of a mixed economy of welfare provision that also incorporates the state, the market, and the voluntary sector. This book offers an exciting new approach to the history of welfare by focusing attention on the complex range of sources of support drawn on to meet family needs. The chapters highlight the significance of the family as a link in in the provision of assistance. They also focus on the role played by gender relations in shaping welfare strategies. An extensive introduction is followed by ten chapters presenting detailed studies of the provision of family welfare across western Europe and the United States over the past four hundred years.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":52400662708497,"sku":null,"price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52400663101713,"sku":"NLS9780313323287","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9780313323287.jpg?v=1758752336"},{"product_id":"dutch-gentry-1500-1650-book-sherrin-marshall-9780313250217","title":"The Dutch Gentry, 1500-1650","description":"This detailed study of Dutch gentry families affords many valuable historical insights and challenges current assumptions about the nature of family life during the early modern period. Numerous aspects of this socialization process in changing societies throughout the world are represented, for relatively uniform societies, such as in Western Europe; multicultural societies, such as in North America; and traditional societies facing the impact of modernization or Westernization of values, such as in India, China, or Japan. Individual approaches range from analyses of typical intergenerational changes to direct comparisons of specific family systems within and among societies, cultures, and ethnic groups. Also discussed are current theories in the area of parent-child interaction, including changing authority structures, differences between fathers and mothers, adjustment and social disorganization crises of children, pressures of modernization, cultural transitions, divorce, and the problems of child abuse. A valuable bibliographic essay, referring to many related works, appears at the end of the volume.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52487491420433,"sku":"NLS9780313251085","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9780313251085.jpg?v=1759860955"},{"product_id":"cross-cultural-perspectives-of-mate-selection-and-marriage-book-george-kurian-9780313206245","title":"Cross-Cultural Perspectives of Mate-Selection and Marriage","description":"Cross-Cultural Perspectives of Mate-Selection and Marriage (Contributions in Family Studies #3) [ Cross-Cultural Perspectives of Mate-Selection and Marriage (Contributions in Family Studies #3) by Kurian, George ( Author ) Hardcover May- 1979 ] Hardcover May- 29- 1979","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52617189196049,"sku":"NLS9780313206245","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9780313206245.jpg?v=1761529529"},{"product_id":"coat-of-many-colors-book-abraham-lavender-9780837195391","title":"A Coat of Many Colors","description":null,"brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52657544790289,"sku":"NLS9780837195391","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9780837195391.jpg?v=1762229186"},{"product_id":"fathers-as-primary-caregivers-book-brenda-geiger-9780313299193","title":"Fathers as Primary Caregivers","description":"Finally, the caregiver role effect indicated on all infants' attachment behaviors under stress showed a distinctive preference for primary caregivers (fathers or mothers) with disregard for gender.
