Written in the author's typically modest, witty and sympathetic style, it displays prodigious learning lightly worn and is a delight for all who are interested in and fascinated by the meaning of words. Diarmaid O Muirithe is a lexicographer and etymologist. He explains the origins of words, where they come from, and why we use some of the expressions we do. His knowledge and erudition in languages, ancient and modern, is enormous. Ireland, with its interesting mixture of languages and dialects, has a particularly rich store of it. It has fascinated some of our greatest writers, not least Joyce, Flann O’ Brien, Behan and Beckett. Although often thought of as common, slang has in fact made a significant contribution to the distinctive nature of Irish writing as well as to the patterns of ordinary Irish speech. Diarmaid Ó Muirithe is one of Ireland’s leading authorities on slang, cant and demotic language generally. He is certainly the most popular. His columns in the Irish Times and other newspapers and magazines have brought his characteristic mixture of wit, kindness and scholarship lightly worn to a wide audience. In Irish Slang, he provides a selection of glosses on Irish slang words and phrases in his inimitable style. Thus he glosses the word Blah / blaa, as follows: 'A kind of bread, something like a bap, but lighter. It is circular-shaped. Waterford people say the stuff is uniquely theirs, but that is not true; it was also baked in counties Kilkenny and Wexford in my youth. The Waterford story that blahs /blaas were introduced by the Huguenots who fled religious persecution in France in the late seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries, and originally called blaads, may or may not be true. I think the word is from the Irish bleathach, a small, flat flour cake.' A delightful little book.
What is your problem if you are ringled to a flazzard? We have our own Irish versions of biblical names, the names of the Evangelists and of continental saints who have taken our fancy at various stages in our history. The Vikings left us some of their personal names, which either in their Irish or their Anglicised forms have proved to be as hardy a growth as those names given to us by the Anglo-Normans. Lots of them are included in this book. And, of course, we have the great repository of the old Irish tradition from which to choose our children’s names. From Aaron to Úna, Diarmaid Ó Muirithe provides a gloss on more than four hundred Irish forenames in his inimitable style that mixes scholarship and wit with quirky snippets of interest. Thus, we learn that the name Art has nothing to do with Arthur; that Brendan is originally of Welsh origin and came to Ireland in a Latinised form; that Cathal is usually translated as Charles, although there is no historical connection between the two; and much more. As with all Diarmaid Ó Muirithe’s work, this book is a model of scholarship lightly worn, informed by a sense of curiosity and fun. It’s the perfect book from which to choose your child’s name.

Based on the much-loved Irish Times column and written in the author's typically witty style, The Last Word is the final work to come from the pen of the distinguished lexicographer (or so he says).

Some of these words are on the verge of extinction; many of them are dialect words.
