I Will Lead You!","description":"'Follow me! I will lead you!' were the last words of Lt. Col. George Brenton Laurie, who commanded the 1st Battalion Royal Irish Rifles and was killed at Neuve Chapelle in March, 1915. He died with his revolver in hand while leading his men in an assault on the German lines. Laurie left behind a remarkable collection of letters, which provide us with a privileged insight into the day to day experience of a battalion commander and his struggles to make sense of the developing madness of trench warfare.  Leading his battalion amidst the constant mud, shelling, sniping and waterlogged trenches of Flanders occupied every waking moment of the life of Lt. Col. Laurie, from the moment the battalion was deployed in November, 1914 through to his death in March, 1915.  His surviving letters give a clear sense of the ever present danger from the bullets, and shells, and the miserable squalor endured by the men who fought the early trench battles during the first winter of the Great War. Laurie was a hands on commander who visited the front lines daily, and this fascinating collection provides an all too rare primary account of the BEF as witnessed from the perspective of a battalion commander.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49559588339985,"sku":"GOR011806857","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1473823331.jpg?v=1751427913"},{"product_id":"fighting-on-three-fronts-book-d-d-ogilvie-9781473823327","title":"Fighting on Three Fronts","description":"In 1914, the Fife and Forfar Yeomanry Regiment was a cavalry regiment with its headquarters in Kirkcaldy and squadrons based in Dunfermline, Cupar, Dundee and Forfar. The regiment was sent to Gallipoli in September 1915, and fought there as a dismounted cavalry formation and served until the final disembarkation, being one of the last units to leave. In just two months the regiment lost three quarters of its strength to casualties and disease.  The survivors were sent to Egypt where, in 1917, they formed the cadre of an infantry battalion, the 14th Battalion Royal Highlanders; better known as the famous Black Watch. The 14th Battalion formed part of the 74th (Yeomanry) Division commanded by Major General Eric Girdwood. In Egypt and Palestine, the 14th Battalion fought with distinction against the Turkish forces at the Battle of Sheria in November 1917, and played a vital role in the events leading up to the fall of Jerusalem.  Following the German offensive on the Western Front in March 1918, the 14th Battalion was rushed to France and saw action in Picardy during the closing stages of the war. On the Somme, the battalion suffered heavily in the fighting around Moislains in September 1918.  This classic account, based on wartime diaries, written by Major D. D. Ogilvie, details the absorbing story of how the Fife and Forfar Yeomanry evolved over the course of the war, and presents a rare primary source record of a hard fighting battalion that saw action on three fronts.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49639697940753,"sku":"GOR013010181","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":50560436732177,"sku":"GOR013170063","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1473823323.jpg?v=1750858994"},{"product_id":"letters-from-the-british-expeditionary-force-1914-1915-book-lord-edward-gleichen-9781783462490","title":"Letters from the British Expeditionary Force 1914-1915","description":"Edward Gleichen commanded the 15th Infantry Brigade during the tumultous opening battles of the Great War. The division was mobilised by 10 August 1914, and fought in the opening battles at Mons, Le Cateau and the Marne. The 15th Infantry Brigade was a regular formation tht comprised four battalions from Bedfordshire, Norfolk, Dorset and Cheshire. Detailed accounts by battlefield commanders from 1914 are surprisingly rare. This long out of print account of the actions of the British Expeditionary Force, which was first published in 1917, was based on a diary of events written at the time by Brigadier General Edward Gleichen. It originally appeared under the title The Doings of the Fifteenth Infantry Brigade - August 1914 to March 1915. This volume is much more than a brigade diary, providing the reader with a detailed and privileged insight into the problems of command during the confused actions in Flanders and France from the perspective of the men who helped to forge the legend of the Old Comtemptables.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":52622829093137,"sku":null,"price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":52622829125905,"sku":"GOR014566491","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9781783462490.jpg?v=1761613087"}],"url":"https:\/\/www.worldofbooks.com\/en-gb\/collections\/eyewitnesses-from-the-great-war-ser-book-series.oembed","provider":"World of Books ","version":"1.0","type":"link"}
