Faced with a serious threat from the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, Moscow entered into an alliance with Sweden and ultimately offered the crown to the young Gustavus Adolphus of Sweden. Initially, a Swedish expeditionary force, commanded by Jacob De la Gardie, marched to Moscow to save Muscovy from a Polish-Lithuanian army. However, the Swedish and Muscovite armies were defeated in the battle of Klushino. Later, Sweden conquered Novgorod. But while the representatives of Gustavus Adolphus ruled Muscovy from Novgorod, a coup in Moscow led to the assumption of power by the first Tsar of the Romanov dynasty. Sweden accordingly entered into a war against Muscovy - the Ingrian War, in which Gustavus Adolphus laid siege to Pskov. The war ended in 1617 with the Treaty of Stolbovo, by which Muscovy ceded key territories to Sweden while Sweden recognized the House of Romanov as rulers of Muscovy. For Sweden, the Treaty of Stolbovo has been described as the most successful peace ever negotiated with Muscovy, or with Russia. For Muscovy, the Treaty marked the ascension of the House of Romanov. In both countries, the war led to significant military reforms that, in time, would make both the Swedish and the Muscovite military establishments forces to be reckoned with. For Gustavus Adolphus, who arrived in 1614 to personally take command of the Swedish war effort, the war in Muscovy proved a significant step on his path to becoming a successful commander during the subsequent Thirty Years' War. In this study Michael Fredholm von Essen presents new research on two wars rarely described in English language works. Additionally, the book details the military systems of both Sweden and Muscovy, with notes about the Commonwealth expeditionary armies, and explains the development of the Swedish Army in the period prior to the Thirty Years' War, in which Gustavus Adolphus was to use it with great success.
In 1587 the 1,000-strong garrison of tiny Tanaka Castle in Higo Province (modern Kumamoto Prefecture) on Japan's southern island of Kyushu, held out for 100 days against an army ten times their size sent by the great general Toyotomi Hideyoshi. When the castle fell it was burned to the ground, and for four centuries the epic struggle lived on only through a handful of letters, two little-known war chronicles and in the folk memories of the local people who continued to make offerings on the now anonymous hillside to comfort the tormented spirits of Tanaka's dead warriors. In 1986 everything changed. Prompted by the approaching fourth centenary of the battle the local council set in motion a systematic archaeological investigation of the castle site. Many interesting finds were made, but the greatest discovery of all came in 1989 in a distant library when a researcher unearthed what turned out to be Japan's oldest surviving battle map. It featured a detailed drawing of Tanaka Castle during the siege that matched up exactly with the picture that was emerging from the excavation. The unique document also contained so much extra information that, when combined with the archaeological finds, the written materials and local folklore, the almost forgotten siege of Tanaka became one of the best documented battles in the whole of Japan's samurai history.Tanaka 1587 tells the complete story of the epic struggle for the first time outside Japan by using the evidence that is available from history, literature, folklore, archaeology and cartography. It is based on the author's own translations of the chronicles and the archaeological report together with his extensive fieldwork over a period of many years. The story is presented as an exciting (and sometimes violent) historical narrative illustrated with unique photographs and maps. The contribution of the battle's enshrined spirits to present-day folk religion is also assessed, while attitudes towards the site's conservation, preservation and celebration provide a fascinating insight into how modern Japan views and exploits its samurai history in a society that has had to come to terms with a violent past. Before 1987 the siege of Tanaka Castle was virtually unknown beyond its immediate boundaries. Just as thirty years of painstaking work and enthusiastic publicity have transformed its status within Japan, this unique ground-breaking book will enable Tanaka's story to be understood and appreciated by a much wider international audience.
The League of Cambrai was an alliance stipulated in December 1508 between the main European powers with the purpose of halting the expansion of the Republic of Venice. The war that followed was one of the major conflicts in the Italian wars: it lasted from 1508 to 1516, and saw several stages. The major States involved were the Kingdom of France, the Pontifical State, and the Republic of Venice. They were sided by the European powers of Spain, England, Scotland, the Holy Roman Empire, and the Kingdom of Hungary, other than several minor States, such as the Dukedom of Milan, the Republic of Florence, the Dukedom of Ferrara, the city of Mantua, and the Swiss cantons. The authors describe the three phases that followed one another during the conflict, and the alternating alliances among the States involved - the League against Venice in the Battle of Agnadello; the following League against France, declared by Pope Julius II, in the Battle of Ravenna; finally, the last phase of the conflict with the alliance between Venice and France in the Battle of Marignano, also known as the Battle of the Giants. In this volume, the structure of the armies, the weapons, the battles and their death toll are described. Chronicles, reports, and studies on the subject were compared and contrasted with one another to render a picture as true as possible to the reality of facts, highlighting the often contrasting versions of the chroniclers. Finally, military heraldry, armies' identification marks, and captains' emblems displayed on garments, harnesses, and insignias are analyzed. Also in this case, documentary sources were studied and compared with the iconographical sources.
This is the story of two very different men, Richard III, the last Plantagenet King of England, and Henry Tudor and how they met in battle on 22 August 1485 at Bosworth Field. The Battle of Bosworth, along with Hastings and Naseby, is one of the most important battles in English history and, on the death of Richard, ushered in the age of the Tudors. This book, using contemporary sources, examines their early lives, the many plots against Richard, and the involvement of Henry's mother, Margaret Beaufort. It also offers a new explanation for Richard's execution of William Hastings. Despite recent portrayals as the archetypal fence-sitters, the book also shows that the powerful Stanley family had a long standing feud with Richard and were not only complicit in the plots against him in the months before the battle, but probably laid the trap that ultimately led to his death on the battlefield. It shows that the events that climaxed at Bosworth were made possible by the intrigues of King Louis XI of France and shows that it was not just the fate of England that was at stake but that of France itself. King Louis' taste for intrigue and double-dealing had earned him the nicknames "the Cunning" and "the Universal Spider." The book details how he spun webs of plots and conspiracies first against Edward IV then Richard III, destabilised England, and created a platform for Henry's invasion: policies that were continued by his daughter, Anne de Beaujeu, after Louis death. This was also a time of revolution in warfare, so the book examines English and European way of war at the time and how it affected the outcome at Bosworth. Then using the latest archaeology and contemporary sources it reconstructs the last hours of Richard III, where the battle took place, and how the battle unfolded using step by step maps and an order of battle for the day. It finally looks at the aftermath of the battle and how Yorkist resistance to the new regime continued into the reign of Henry VIII.
In 1529, an army from the Sultanate of Adal in modern-day Somalia invaded neighboring Ethiopia. In East Anglia, Robert Kett, aggrieved at the abuses of enclosure, laid siege to Norwich until defeated by Royal forces at the bloody battle of Dussindale. At the same time, thousands of commoners of Devon and Cornwall rose up against the introduction of the English-language Book of Common Prayer and the systematic destruction of their traditional faith. Like Norwich, Exeter was besieged throughout the long summer until, in a brutal campaign by government forces and hired foreign mercenaries, the rebellion was finally suppressed. Previous histories of the rebellions of 1549 have explored their causes in great depth, but little attention has been given to the military history of the campaigns. Yet the mid-Tudor period rests on the cusp between a medieval form of warfare and the new emerging ideas that defined warfare in the early-modern period, making the battles of 1549 of crucial importance in understanding the transition between the two. In this book Dr E.T. Fox explores how the 'medieval' rebels of the Devon and Cornwall militias fared against the German pikemen and Italian arquebusiers the government sent against them.
In 1526, the army of the Hungarian kingdom was soundly defeated by the army of the Ottoman sultan, Suleiman the Magnificent, in the battle of Mohács. In the following decades the lands that were once part of the Hungarian Crown were divided. On the eastern half of the former Hungarian kingdom a new state was born, the Principality of Transylvania. For one and a half century (1541-1691), Transylvania was a distinct state on European maps, and played an important military and strategic role in the struggle between the Ottomans and the Habsburgs in Central and South-East Europe. This book follows the efforts of the Transylvanian rulers to organize and to defend their new state, during its first seven decades of existence (1541-1613). The army at their disposal inherited an essentially medieval structure that reflected the social composition of the region. The bulk of the army consisted of the so called `county flags` (noble levies and conscripted peasants from their estates), the Székely levies (troops recruited in the districts of South-East Transylvania) and the troops supplied by the Saxon districts from the highly urbanized southern parts of Transylvania. In addition, the Transylvanian army also had several groups of professional soldiers that performed permanent or semi-permanent military service: the court guard (aule milites), the garrisons of the main fortifications concentrated on the western frontier of the principality and other groups that performed military service in exchange for tax exemptions like the riflemen (pixidari, puÈcaÈi, puskások) and the guardsmen (darabontok, darabanÈi). The last chapter of the book is focused on the main military campaigns in which the Transylvanian army was involved (the expedition of Giovanni Battista Castaldo in Transylvania and the Banat region 1551-1553, the "Fortress War" period 1552-1571, the Long Turkish War 1591-1606, etc.), with extensive descriptions of some of the most important pitched battles and sieges.
The period 1494-1628 is critical in the history of artillery. Guns, gunpowder and gun carriages underwent such a major transformation that they would remain virtually unchanged for over three centuries. This book explains the development and use of artillery during this critical period. The forge and foundry where they were made and the lives of the men who made them are also thoroughly investigated. I begin by reviewing the development of medieval artillery and then establish the real significance of the French invasion of Italy in 1494, often seen as the beginning of an 'artillery revolution'. I propose the development of a 'new artillery' in the late medieval period, with the events of 1494 confirming the significance of these changes in the popular imagination and in the minds of later historians.Through the extensive use of contemporary sources, I have written what may be called a modern version of the The Compleat Gunner. This is a summary of all the best advice on how to inspect, load, aim a cannon and even how to hit the target. I deal with every aspect of the gunners' art including the loadin, instruments and ammunition as well as the manufacture of gunpowder and saltpetre. This book contains the first authoritative summaries of the recent manufacture and trials of guns from this period. These were by the Royal Armouries/ Mary Rose Trust, the Vasa Museum and the Danish Middle Ages Centre. These trials have provided invaluable hard evidence of the reliability, accuracy and hitting power of a range of contemporary weapons. This material is well supplemented with contemporary evidence concerning the use and effect of guns on land and sea.It is often said that "Amateurs talk about tactics, but professionals study logistics" and the logistical and administrative issues associated with artillery, which are so often ignored, are fully covered. It was a common assumption that a third of the total cost of any enterprise would be swallowed up by the Ordnance, I explain why this might so easily be the case. The book is heavily illustrated with contemporary images, many of which have not been used before and which are of excellent quality. The text is well supported by over thirty tables of data relating to artillery and its performance. For anyone interested in European warfare in this period this book will be an invaluable addition, providing an authoritative study of this Queen of the Battlefield.
This is new research on a war with seldom published English accounts, detailing the military systems of Sweden and Denmark-Norway. The book describes and analyses the Kalmar War of 1611-1613 between Sweden and Denmark-Norway. Since Denmark controlled the Straits between the Baltic Sea and the North Sea, Sweden sought an alternative trade route through the sparsely populated Arctic Lapland - an option enabled by the 1595 Treaty of Teusina (Tyavzino) with Muscovy. In 1607, King Charles IX of Sweden declared himself King of the Lapps and sent men to collect taxes in what by tradition was regarded as Norwegian territory. In response, King Christian IV of Denmark and Norway in 1611 declared war upon Sweden and invaded Swedish territory from the south. Operations also took place along the Swedish-Norwegian border and elsewhere in the Baltic region, on land and on sea. In addition, Sweden employed Scottish privateers and enlisted a Scottish corps which landed in Norway. Nonetheless, Denmark ultimately won the war. However, the Danish thrust against the Swedish heartland failed, and the Kalmar War was the last time when Denmark successfully defended its control of the Baltic Sea against Sweden. The principal commander on the Swedish side was the young Gustavus Adolphus, who later rose to prominence in the Thirty Years' War. The losses in the Kalmar War proved to Gustavus Adolphus that the Swedish army was becoming obsolete and needed thorough modernization. As a result, the defeat in the Kalmar War was the catalyst that prompted Gustavus Adolphus to reform the Swedish army, which in turn set Sweden on the path to become a regional great power in the subsequent Thirty Years' War. Michael Fredholm von Essen presents new research on a war previously seldom described in English. Moreover, the book details the military systems of Sweden and Denmark-Norway in the early seventeenth century and explains the development of the Swedish Army and the military thought of Gustavus Adolphus before he used his reformed army with great success in the Thirty Years' War.
The Men of Warre examines the clothes, weapons and accoutrements of the Scots at war between 1460 and 1600 using a wide range of sources to present a clear picture of the what the highland and lowland Scots were wearing and fighting with in this crucial and turbulent period in Scotland's history. The battle was a catastrophic defeat for Talbot and heralded the rapid collapse of the last vestiges of English power in south-west France. Three months later the last English troops left Bordeaux. The end of interest rule in Gascony brought to an end a period during which, in a little over four years, the French had driven the English from all their lands in Normandy and Gascony, leaving the Calais Pale as the only surviving possession in France - which the English Crown would hold for another century. The battle also marked an important step in the evolution of warfare. King Charles VII had brought about major reforms in the French army, establishing a standing army, and, thanks to the technical and tactical innovations of the Bureau brothers, artillery played a decisive role on the battlefield for the first time. To put the Battle of Castillon in perspective the book summarizes the origins of the Hundred Years War and the ebb and flow of fortunes during the war until the Treaty of Tours in 1444. It then describes the military reforms of King Charles VII and the innovations of the Bureau brothers in the development of artillery. John Talbot, who died in the battle, had a long and successful military career, and was one of the few English commanders to emerge from the final years of the 100 Years War with his reputation intact. He fought during the reconquest of Normandy and, as the commander of the English army attempting to stem the French tide in Gascony, was a key figure in the later years of the war. His military career is described and the book then recounts in detail the campaigns in Normandy in 1449-50 and in Gascony in 1451 and 1452-3. The battle of Castillon, the decisive action in the final French reconquest of Gascony, is described in detail. The book concludes with an account of the aftermath of the battle and the final expulsion of the English after the surrender of Bordeaux three months to the day after the defeat of John Talbot at Castillon.
The Elizabethan army has been disregarded, denigrated or derided: Shakespeare's portrayal of Falstaff and Fluellen bear more responsibility for this than any accurate assessment of its role in Elizabeth's reign. This book aims to provide a comprehensive explanation of the part that the English army, in its various guises, played in her long and increasingly troubled reign. Elizabeth was no Amazon Queen; she abhorred war because of its cost, its unpredictability and the inconstancy and insubordination of those she placed in charge. She could gain little personally from war as she was excluded from direct participation. Until 1585 she faced the problem of Queen Mary, a Catholic claimant to her throne whose existence threatened internal peace and greatly complicated matters abroad. Elizabeth was fearful of all her near neighbors as they could so easily unsettle her kingdom and her religious settlement. On her accession she tried to take advantage of crises in Scotland and France, and for the first time experienced the gap between what her military men would promise and what they could deliver. Determined as she was to maintain domestic peace, the Northern Rebellion of 1569 made it clear that England's military preparedness was wholly inadequate. Thus began a long project to make widespread military service managed by the government, especially as after 1585 more and more men were sent for service abroad. Ironically the Anglo-Spanish war was at least in part the consequence of Elizabeth's efforts to avoid this disastrous confrontation. Once committed she intervened either when England was directly threatened or when she was convinced that she could gain a significant strategic advantage. The many expeditions she facilitated were invariably badly managed and rarely achieved their potential. This book addresses the criticisms that she was inconsistent, mean and interfering and the cause of the many failures that overtook her armies. The book gives considerable space to the Nine Years' War in Ireland because it was of central importance to Elizabeth and the military establishment. It involved several key battles as well as developments in both strategy and tactics that have in the past been overlooked. Elizabeth's army played a vital part in defending the realm from foreign foes and domestic rebels, and although there was little glory it was a vital aspect of her reign and an important chapter in Britain's military history.
If you peruse a bookshop's shelves, Tudor history seems to concern itself with Monarchy (mostly wives), religion (for or against the Reformation) with a side order of cookery (pies and pottage). Tudor warfare has either been dismissed as unimportant or criticized for its 'backwardness'. There have, however, been recent attempts to reevaluate the achievements of the Tudors at war, especially the part played by Henry VIII in the 'modernization' of the army, in the context of the continuing military revolution debate. This book provides a broad and comprehensive survey of the Tudor army, explaining its campaigns and battles in the context of its monarchs and their diplomatic and foreign policy priorities. It also provides a thematic study of key issues, such as recruitment, fortification, equipment, tactics and supply. While much has been written about how far the Tudor military does or does not fit into a perceived pattern of European military development, I argue that it can only be understood if the unique political, social and economic background of England is appreciated. The conclusion drawn is that for all the 'failings' identified by historians, it was a system that was not only 'fit for purpose' but it could on occasion achieve extraordinary feats, whether those be the Device forts of Henry VIII or the stunning victories at Flodden and Pinkie.
The Swabian League was established as a defensive alliance of princes, prelates, and Imperial cities to maintain the peace within the territory of Southern Germany. It draws on contemporary French, Spanish and English accounts, as well as the best of more recent scholarship, to provide an account of the Wars and armies that did so much to create the Bourbon monarchy and laid the basis for the Ancien Régime's military machine. The book contains: - A summary of the wars and major actions (including maps of the battles of Druex, Sainct Denys, Jarnac, Moncontour, La Rochelle, Coutras, Arques and Ivry). These maps are all newly-researched and are based on the formations and dispositions actually employed rather than vague indications of relative positions. The maps reveal some interesting insight into the position and extent of some of these battlefields. - A description of the great military offices of state, their holders and the chain of command. Military biographies of forty-three of the main commanders of the Wars. This section corrects a great deal of misinformation, including sorting out which 'Duc de Monpensier' or 'Seigneur de Hangest' is being referred to in many more general histories. It places some well-known, but purely understood, historical characters (such as Henry 'the Good' of Navarre, Admiral Coligny, 'Scarface' Guise and Henry III's infamous 'mignons') in their proper context. - A summary of the operation of French armies on the march, in camp, on the battlefield and during a siege. - Detailed examinations of each of the element of the army: guard units, cavalry, artillery and infantry. Each of these sections includes sections on organization, equipment and tactics as well as descriptions taken from primary sources and both color plates and black and white illustrations specifically produced for this work. - A section on military flags and banners used by the participants, again accompanied by numerous illustrations. - A glossary of contemporary French military terminology. - A select bibliography. It also offers new conclusions on the impact of the Wars on the conduct of warfare throughout Europe during the later 16th and early 17th centuries, highlighting the origins of innovations ascribed to the likes of Maurice of Nassau and Gustavus Adolphus such as smaller, shot-based infantry formations, cavalry tactics and the use of commanded shot to support cavalry.
In the early hours of the 24th of February 1525, under the walls of the city of Pavia, the best Imperial fought against one of the largest French armies every to have invade the Italian states. Armies led by the young Francis Ist of France and the Emperor Charles Vth fought for the coveted prize of the Duchy of Milan. By the end of the fighting, the renowned Black Legion had been wiped out and the cream of the French Heavy Cavalry had been destroyed, by the massed ranks of drilled and disciplined Spanish arquebusiers. The French King and many of his nobles were prisoner of the enemy.Seen as one of the most significant battles in history, Pavia was to be the decisive battle of what became known as the Italian Wars, a series of conflicts that for almost thirty years raged the length of the peninsula, fought by Europe's most powerful states. The defeat of the French Gendarmes at Pavia would signal the end of the dominance of heavy cavalry on the battlefield and the rise of the professional infantry soldier using increasingly proficient firearms in ever greater numbers. In this third volume of the series, the events that led to the decisive battle of Pavia, from the Peace of Noyon in 1516 to the fateful day are examined. The phases of the battle have been reconstructed and described in detail, comparing the many and varied accounts, whilst the site of the battle is examined for evidence of the fighting. The armies and troops that fought at the battle are also examined in detail, as are their leaders. The authors also devote an important section of the book to the heraldry of the armies. Coats of Arms, heraldic devices and flags the colors used are examined and reconstructed from original images and French, Spanish, and Italian sources. By the 1540s, the centralizing Tudor state had ended the self-rule enjoyed by the Anglo-Irish Pale and was embarked on an increasingly severe program of reconquest. A key element of regaining central control over the island was the demilitarizing of the Irish lordships, both Gaelic and semi-Gaelicised Anglo-Irish. Native resistance resulted in an increasingly costly series of large-scale wars, fueled by the emergence of the Reformation. e book traces the development of Irish armies during the period, including the latest studies on the question of modernization: i.e., the 'Military Revolution'. Recent scholarship has called into question many long standing assumptions about Ireland in this period, including the degree of contact and commerce with mainland Europe, and the ability of Irish society to adapt to, and absorb, outside influences. A new appreciation of these questions helps place Tudor Irish military culture in a European context, calling for a reassessment of the degree to which Irish armies were outdated. While an expression of a profoundly traditional culture, they are found to be suited to purpose and eager to adopt rearms at nearly the rate seen in England. The early part of this period saw Irish lordships enjoying a degree of local autonomy, exploiting newly found sources of wealth--principally fish--and expressing great confidence in a building boom of castles and associated churches and monasteries with continental affiliations. e book covers the phenomenon of large-scale castle building in this era, which has le Ireland the most heavily encastellated landscape in Europe. Also included are comprehensive army lists and unprecedented detail on Irish arms and armor of the period, tracing developments over time. New period sources and iconography are made use of. Besides the 'rising out' of the Pale and the traditional Irish troop types (horseman, galloglass and kern), a thorough examination is made of Scots Highland mercenary activity in Ireland, including weapons and organization. Also featured are the naval forces of the West Highland Scots and maritime clans of Ireland, including strength and changes in ship types over time.
"This is a marvelous addition to the Tudor Warre volumes and the From Retinue to Regiment series. Well done." - Historical Miniatures Gaming Society This volume completes the study of the Tudor Art of War and is in effect a handbook for the Elizabethan army, which explains its leadership, organization, tactics and training and recruitment. It also describes how soldiers were paid, clothed, equipped and provided for - or as was too often the case, not provided for. Wars are fought by armies; in Elizabeth's England the wars led to the creation of armies in a rather ad-hoc fashion, until the long-term commitments to Ireland and the Netherlands forced the creation of a semi-permanent institution. An army is as good as its recruits and in Elizabeth's reign recruitment for service, either for the newly developed Trained Bands or for overseas service as pressed men, was predominantly managed by the counties. The book considers the strengths and weaknesses of the system that created a very different force from any that had gone before. Infantry were the core of any English force, and the author provides a detailed explanation and description of the training and tactics that they were required to master if they were to face the rigors of a Continental war. The volume includes many diagrams from contemporary military handbooks which demonstrate how companies and larger formations could be deployed. It was during Elizabeth's reign that firearms came to be widely adopted, finally displacing the bow. The arquebus gave way to the caliver and the musket, as well as other 'fiery weapons'. Using contemporary sources as well as modern research, the author has evaluated the effectiveness of these weapons and how they were handled. The role of the cavalry in its various forms was a matter of much debate and the book provides a useful summary of opinions on the matter. Elizabeth, despite being criticized for parsimony at the time, spent a vast fortune on equipping and providing for her soldiers. The counties took on much of the responsibility for recruitment and initial equipment of the soldier but on joining the army he became a royal expense. The huge sums spent on clothing, pay and provisioning gave rise to equally great opportunities for embezzlement. The state may have paid for war, but the profit went to those responsible for handling these large sums and the manufacturers and merchants who supplied them. The story is one of endemic corruption, for which the poor soldier suffered, and which consequently blunted the effectiveness of the campaigns. Military glory could not be gained by an army that was blighted from within. Elizabethan society valued rank highly. often, it seems, above merit, and this study attempts to explain the tensions and rivalries that developed between soldiers and politicians and between men of honor. It is important to understand how all military developments were judged in relation to the classical-era ideals that dominated Renaissance thinking. The discipline and organization of the Roman Army was admired as were the virtues of the 'noble Roman'. Elizabeth's army at the end of her reign was very different from its Tudor predecessors. It had experienced a transformation in almost every area other than in its aristocratic leadership. Whether these changes amounted to a 'military revolution' is a matter discussed in the conclusion. The book addresses the many questions that arise when considering Elizabeth's army: an army that has long been disregarded but is well worth attention and reconsideration.
The events which occurred within the German speaking part of the Holy Roman Empire between 1524 and 1526 have been described by historians as the most significant popular uprising on European soil of the early modern era. On Easter day 1544, the two armies engaged in battle but the outcome remained unclear. The day after, however, the men led by Bourbon seemed to prevail. The Imperial cavalry was defeated by the French - who demonstrated again their bravery. The initial success of the Spanish infantry was soon jeopardized by the gruesome clash between the Imperial square formations and the Swiss. The Enfants perdus detached from the Swiss square and massacred the enemy with their halberds with a flank attack. In this groundbreaking book the author has drawn on previously untranslated primary sources to set the famous yet misunderstood conflict in its true context. Its history begins with the glory days of Ashikaga Yoshimitsu who made the position of shogun into something that was admired and respected, and left a legacy symbolized by his famous Golden Pavilion. Within decades all that he had achieved seemed to have been lost. In 1441 the reigning shogun Yoshinori, Yoshimitsu's son, had been murdered by a jealous rival. The Bakufu (shogunate) had somehow survived, but Yoshinori was succeeded first by a son who never reached manhood and then by another young son called Yoshimasa. He was to reign for 49 years in a turbulent age. Not only did Yoshimasa have to face up to his background of family tragedy; unprecedented waves of rioting by farmers shook the ruling classes as much as any wars could have done, and all this happened to a background of famines, droughts and floods that killed more people than any of the battles ever did. Yoshimasa had several armed conflicts to contend with, which culminated in a succession dispute over his own choice of heir. This launched the Ånin War. There had been conflicts before, but what made the Ånin War unique was the fierce street-fighting that went on within Kyoto itself. The battles were conducted from fortified mansions, which were surrounded by stout wooden walls and ditches and sported tall observation towers. In one such fight in the summer of 1467 eight cart-loads of heads were taken as trophies, but within months the conflict deteriorated into a stalemate where night raids were launched and large stones were flung by catapult. At the same time huge areas of Kyoto were needlessly burned out by careless attacks from irregular troops called ashigaru, whose looting and destruction went far beyond the enemy positions and took in temples, mansions and commoners' dwellings. The greatest loss of all was the disappearance of loyalty to the shogun. Instead his former deputies in the provinces seized power in their local areas. This was the beginning of the Sengoku Period: Japan's 'Age of Warring States'. The book ends with one of these sengoku daimyo (lords of the warring states) called HÅjÅ SÅun, whose family would control much of Eastern Japan for the next century, owing nothing to the authority of the shogun, whose powers had been taken away by the terrible Ånin War.
"...the numerical explanations and discussions are exceptionally helpful. During the sixteenth century Japan's medieval period was left behind as the samurai experienced a military revolution that involved the introduction of rearms and the mobilization of large armies who fought from stone castles. The history of this violent time is perfectly encapsulated in the campaigns waged by five generations of one outstanding warlord family: the Hojo of Odawara Castle. In 1487 the dynasty's founder attacked a wooden stockade using bows and arrows; in 1590 his great-great grandson defended a huge castle using cannons. Successive Hojo warlords were contemporaries of famous samurai such as Takeda Shingen, Uesugi Kenshin and Oda Nobunaga, whose armies they fought and defeated, but their end came at the hands of Toyotomi Hideyoshi, the "Napoleon of Japan", who defeated the Hojo in a massive siege of their mighty castle of Odawara. This book tells the story of a century of warfare using Japanese sources not previously translated into English. It is spectacularly illustrated with photographs of armor and weapons plus newly-commissioned artwork. Detailed and authoritative accounts of the campaigns show the Hojo samurai using 'every trick in the book' from sea raiding to ninja attacks. There are also many surprises, such as the use of dogs as messengers and the revelation that the final siege of Odawara in 1590 was no easy matter. When the Hojo dynasty came to its glorious end and their last patriarch committed hara-kiri, Japan and samurai warfare were changed forever.
"...well-written, well-told, and well-illustrated. It's another marvelous volume in the From Retinue to Regiment series. Well done, indeed." - Historical Miniatures Gaming Society The Sieges of Rhodes 1480 and 1522 provides accounts of the two epic sieges when the Knight Hospitallers of the Order of St John faced the might of the Ottoman Empire. Photographs and maps included in the book illustrate what a nearly impossible task the Ottomans faced in both sieges. The two sieges illustrate the changes in warfare in the 40 years between them and the revolution in artillery that was taking place during this period. The Sieges of Rhodes contains grand tales of the greatest heroes and the worst of villains, stories of ingenuity, bravery, cruelty and cowardice, tales which echoed across Christendom. When Grand Master Phillipe Villiers de l`Isle-Adam and the few surviving knights and brothers of the Order of St John departed from the port of Rhodes on 1 January 1523, the long history of the Crusades ended. The Order of St John had protected the Latin States for almost 200 years until forced to leave after the fall of Acre in 1291. Unlike the Templars, they survived the disgrace of defeat and re-established themselves on the island of Rhodes. Here they remained a militant presence, always a challenge to the power of Islam and hopeful of reclaiming the Holy Land. The rise of Ottoman power in the mid-fifteenth century led to two great sieges, the first in 1480 during the reign of the Sultan Mehmed II and the second in 1522 by Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent. Both sieges were epic in their character and scale and added to the fame and prestige of the Hospitallers, and on both occasions the Grand Masters provided inspiration for the garrisons and for Christendom. The sieges occurred at a critical period in Europe's political, religious and military history. In 1480, Christendom was united, and both the means of attack and the forms of defense were fundamentally late-medieval in nature - both sides even built trebuchets, which had been thought long obsolete. In 1522, Europe was deeply divided, and the weapons and fortifications had dramatically changed. This book considers the medieval fortifications and their transformation in the intervening years, according to the most up-to-date ideas. It also outlines the artillery revolution that occurred over the same period, with the massive, clumsy, but still powerful, stone-throwing bombards giving way to narrow-bore, cast bronze pieces firing iron projectiles at much higher velocities with significantly greater effect. The sieges are also of great technical interest to military historians because of the extensive use of pyrotechnics and mining. Fire was an especially horrible addition to the Hospitallers' arsenal, and the book summarizes the flame weapons that were available and how they were used. The mining and countermining that took place in the second siege was an epic in its own right. Recent groundbreaking research has highlighted why the war underground was so extensive and became the most effective Ottoman strategy. The soldiers that faced each other were utterly unlike one another in arms, armor and tactics, although similar in their disparate religious devotion. What effect did this have on the outcome? The Ottoman army, especially the Janissaries, were the terror of the East and the West, yet they met their match on both occasions. How was it that a vastly numerically inferior force managed to fight their enemy to a standstill? This can only be understood by studying the sieges in detail, which is possible because of the excellent first-hand accounts produced soon after the events themselves. The reader can, therefore, experience the sieges through the words of those who fought in them. The extraordinary survival of Hospitaller armor from Rhodes and the superb collections of Ottoman and Mameluke armor and weapons help illustrate the contrast between these warrior cultures.
In 1499, the Swiss and German Landsknechts clashed in the Swabian War, each showcasing advanced tactical infantry, resulting in intense and costly battles. In February 1534, Franz von Waldeck, the Catholic Bishop of Münster, alarmed by the rise of an Anabaptist enclave in the city, initiated a siege that would last for sixteen brutal months. This stronghold, led by fervent believers who viewed Münster as the 'New Jerusalem', resisted the bishop's forces with unwavering resolve. Amidst religious turmoil and shifting political allegiances, the Anabaptists fortified the city, repelling numerous assaults and withstanding starvation, disease, and internal strife. In A Mighty Fortress of God, the siege comes to life through the vivid accounts of contemporary witnesses and detailed historical research. Readers are taken step by step through the critical phases of the siege: the construction of earthworks, the organization of defenses, and the increasingly desperate attempts by both sides to break the deadlock. From the failed attacks of 1534 to the dramatic betrayal that finally led to the collapse of the Anabaptist defense in June 1535, this account illuminates a key moment in Reformation-era history. The book also explores the motivations, leadership, and ideologies of both the besiegers and the besieged, offering an unparalleled insight into the complexities of the Anabaptist movement and its tragic end in Münster. The text is supplemented by specially-commissioned artwork of clothing and flags, as well as detailed appendices providing, amongst other things, the Bishop's Articles of War, and details of the costs of the siege.
The Nine Years' War recounts Ireland's near-expulsion of English rule, led by Hugh O'Neill's remarkable Irish confederation. The Nine Years War (1593-1603), sometimes known as Tyrone's Rebellion, was one of the most devastating and brutal conflicts to sweep the island. Never would the English Crown come so close to losing its grip on Ireland. It was brought on by a combination of English misrule, Irish ambition and the fortuitous creation of political ties with Spain. A confederation of Irish lords led by the charismatic and exceptionally gifted Hugh O'Neill, Earl of Tyrone, swept from one victory to another. Part 1 of this series examines the years of Irish triumph as English nonchalance turned to disbelief and then panic as Irish armies engaged with and defeated all attempts by the Crown to restore English authority. Tyrone duped the English state into believing it was engaged in a local affair against Hugh Maguire, lord of Fermanagh, for the first two years of the war. While the English fought a shooting war in the west of Ulster, Tyrone raised an unprecedented confederation of Irish lords that set aside parochial self-interest to mount a concerted and coordinated effort to eject English power from Ireland once and for all. Time and again, English armies were engaged and defeated by modernised Irish forces fighting with a skill and technical sophistication never before seen. This series of Crown defeats came to a bloody climax at the battle of the Yellow Ford on 14 August 1598. The Irish shattered the English field army in a matter of hours. Its commander, Henry Bagenal, was killed along with almost half his men. The battle remains the greatest defeat given to the English by Irish arms and a striking reverse to a period often seen as Elizabeth's Golden Age.
Explores Early Modern Southeast Asian warfare, blending war elephants, firearms, sieges, and cultural traditions. The origin of the longbow has been much discussed and the Shortbow-Longbow conundrum is examined in depth. The longbow's capabilities and effectiveness are evaluated using recent research allied to contemporary accounts. The part the bow played in the 'Infantry Revolution' and the longbow's relationship with the crossbow are covered. The longbow could only be employed in war if the monarch could mobilise the resources needed to manufacture it and if English society could provide the strong-backed archers able to use it. These issues are investigated, including a consideration of the legal and societal framework needed. The English Longbow - Investigating a Myth is an honest appraisal of the longbow. It is not a book of battles but one that describes how the bow was used, sometimes successfully and sometimes not. It provides a comprehensive and balanced assessment of what was and remains the weapon that made Britain.
Tyrone's Rebellion reshaped Ireland as Mountjoy's disciplined campaign shattered Tyrone's network and restored Crown authority. The Nine Years' War (1593-1603), sometimes known as Tyrone's Rebellion, was one of the most devastating and brutal conflicts ever to sweep the island. Never before had the English Crown come so close to losing its grip on Ireland. The war arose from a volatile combination of English misrule, Irish ambition, and the fortuitous creation of political ties with Spain. A confederation of Irish lords, led by the charismatic and exceptionally gifted Hugh O'Neill, Earl of Tyrone, swept from one victory to another. Part 2 of this series examines how the English recovered from the brink of defeat. Hugh O'Neill's victory over the English at the Battle of the Yellow Ford ignited a fire that consumed the English plantation in Munster and significantly weakened the Crown's position in Ireland. Queen Elizabeth's favourite, the Earl of Essex, was dispatched to restore control, but his blundering leadership left Crown authority on the island close to collapse. The arrival of Charles Blount, Lord Mountjoy, at the start of 1600, however, transformed English fortunes. After seven years of near-continuous setbacks, Mountjoy turned the tide against Tyrone's confederation. Unlike his predecessors, Mountjoy did not underestimate his enemies. He developed an island-wide strategy designed to dismantle Tyrone's network of alliances and restored order and confidence within the Crown's army by adopting many of the Irish military reforms. Supported by capable commanders such as Sir George Carew, Mountjoy rolled back Irish gains and carried the war into Tyrone's Ulster heartlands. His strategy was costly in English lives, but its success was undeniable, as relentless campaigning steadily wrested ground from Tyrone. The fate of all sides converged with the Spanish landing of 4,000 troops at Kinsale, which led to a ferocious winter siege and the pivotal Battle of Kinsale. Mountjoy's victory on Christmas Eve 1601 shattered Tyrone's military power, but the war was not yet over. Its bloodiest phase still lay ahead, as English armies unleashed scorched-earth tactics and massacres on an unprecedented scale. Only af er Ulster was laid waste and Ireland ravaged by famine did Tyrone finally submit in 1603, bringing the war to an end and completing the Tudor conquest of Ireland.
The sequel to The English Longbow, this second volume completes the history of English military archery. It examines the major battles of Northampton, St Albans, and the decisive clash at Towton, as well as lesser-known campaigns in Ireland and Calais. Based on the author's four decades of archival research, it presents new interpretations of key engagements, particularly Wakefield and Towton, while incorporating the latest archaeological evidence to reshape our understanding of warfare during this period. This clash marked the culmination of the so-called Italian Wars, which had ravaged the Italian peninsula for over 30 years as European powers vied for dominance of the peninsula. At Pavia, the supremacy of heavy cavalry on the battlefield finally yielded to the disciplined strength of professional infantry. The landsknecht pikemen crushed their Swiss rivals and annihilated the German mercenaries of the Black Band in French service. Yet, the true credit for victory belongs to the Spanish arquebusiers, expertly led by the Marchese di Pescara. The deadly volleys from their firearms decimated the elite French gendarmerie and led to the capture of the King of France, François I. The Battle of Pavia 1525 is Massimo Predonzani's second work devoted to this historic encounter. More than a simple revision, it expands upon his earlier research with a detailed account of the city's siege, drawing upon the testimonies of chroniclers who witnessed the events firsthand. For the battle itself, Predonzani's analysis of the Capodimonte Tapestries proves essential, as these offer the most accurate visual representations of the conflict. He compares their imagery with accounts from contemporary Italian, Spanish, German, and French sources, as well as with reports from participants in both the siege and the battle. Through this meticulous comparison, Predonzani identifies the figures depicted in the tapestries and their heraldic insignia. The text is richly supported by well-researched colour plates, illustrations, photographs, and campaign maps.
Gaelic leaders embraced Western European trends, countering myths of isolation through advanced training and armament. It has long been customary for historians to dismiss medieval Irish and Scottish soldiers as outmoded and poorly equipped. From the time of the Statutes of Kilkenny down to the death of Henry VIII, The Gaelic World at War challenges those assumptions head-on by examining the methods of military organisation, training, armament, and tactics followed by late medieval Irish leaders. Gaelic military leaders were not as isolated from the European mainstream as has often been believed. Irish and Scottish soldiers may have been better trained, selected, and equipped than previously thought. Gaelic armies embraced many of the trends occurring in Western Europe. Rather than being backward and isolated, Gaelic armies recognised that the world was changing around them and that they needed to keep pace with those changes. Drawing on a broad range of sources, The Gaelic World at War will appeal to reenactors, model-makers, and scholars, providing a fresh perspective on the soldiers of late medieval Ireland.
The resistance of the Florentine Republic has entered in the myth, becoming the paradigm of the Italians' struggle against the foreign domination. The Risorgimento rhetoric immediately took over this event, rewriting it for anti-Habsburgs propaganda, effectively erasing the responsibilities and weaknesses of the Italian ruling dynasties of that age.The fall of the 'New Athens' left a legacy with great consequences, and possibly, it is not a coincidence that after 1530, a new phase of Italian and European history began, with other protagonists and a new political season. For the first time, a complete account of the siege after sources from the archives of the ancient Italian states, is published in English, with analysis and descriptions of equipment and ensigns of the two sides.
Crécy and Poitiers had defeated the proud French knights, once victorious. At Azincourt and Verneuil, they had to drink the wine to the dregs. These lessons would lead King Charles VII to take action. The Ordonnance companies are considered by many to be the first permanent military units of the Kings of France. Although Charles VII was not the founder of this permanent army, he was the one who completed its reform. To draw up his famous ordonnance of 1445, the 'Bien Servi' (Well Served) drew inspiration from what his predecessors had initiate.French Companies of Ordonnance covers the organization, recruitment and military equipment of the French companies of Ordonnance from the late XIVth century to the middle of the 16th century. Their composition and organisational development are thus analysed in detail. Numerous plates and illustrations complete this study.
The end of the Reconquista, following the War of Granada (1481-1492), prompted the Catholic Monarchs to project their formidable military force onto the Italian peninsula, under the command of the Great Captain, aiming to establish their dominance over the French. In subsequent decades, the rulers of the House of Austria (Charles V and Philip II) sustained this immense struggle until its favourable resolution in 1559. Simultaneously, the emerging Hispanic Monarchy had to contend for continental supremacy against formidable rivals such as the Ottomans, German Protestants, the Dutch, and the English, through a constant defensive-offensive effort led by their renowned foreign intervention troops: the Tercios. Way, Honour and Firearms analyses the origin, evolution, and development of this powerful Spanish army, based on the flexible combination of 'pike and shot', along with cavalry and artillery, exploring their formations, experiences, battles, and principal leaders up to the year 1600, providing an engaging scholarly journey through European military history based on a wide range of consulted sources.
Monks, Mercenaries and Muskets chronicles a series of little-known campaigns where armies of warrior monks, mercenaries, and fanatical Buddhist confederates, who had gained early expertise with firearms, challenged Japan's elite samurai over nearly two centuries. The samurai, who evolved over many centuries into a unique military class, were never Japan's only warriors. Several alternative groups existed, some of whom fought under the banner of a sacred three-legged crow and cherished legends of holy men appearing in the sky or riding into battle on the backs of giant octopuses. Yet whatever fantasies they embraced off the battlefield, in the mundane reality of Japanese warfare, these warriors were among the first to deploy firearms in anger and were almost certainly the first to use them effectively. Some had been ordained as Buddhist monks, others served as mercenaries, and when not fighting each other, these alternative armies challenged the evolution of the samurai. For over a century and a half, anti-samurai entities like these fought against some of the most prominent figures in Japanese history, opposing the top-down hierarchy of daimyo rule in favour of a more egalitarian system resembling republicanism, although some of these organisations grew as authoritarian as the daimyo they opposed. The overwhelming force of Toyotomi Hideyoshi finally suppressed them in the 1580s, but by then, they had almost altered the course of Japanese history. Monks, Mercenaries and Muskets tells their story for the first time. Drawing on material never before translated from Japanese and richly illustrated in both colour and black and white, this is a groundbreaking account of a unique military phenomenon.
https://www.worldofbooks.com/en-gb/collections/from-retinue-to-regiment-1453-1618-book-series.oembed?page=2
