The first account, with an anonymous author (attributed to Sir John Malcolm), offers a detailed diplomatic and historical perspective on the journey through Persia during an East India Company mission led by Sir John Malcolm. The second travelogue, written by Mirz-leh, an Iranian intellectual and later diplomat, chronicles a separate expedition commissioned by Sir William Ouseley, the brother of Sir Gore Ouseley. It enriches the narrative with vivid descriptions of Persia's societies, geography, and architecture, offering a deeply cultural and immersive experience. Together, these accounts weave a comprehensive and multifaceted portrait of early 19th-century Persia, blending Eastern and Western viewpoints to create a captivating exploration of the region's history, culture, and landscapes.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":51631057633553,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":51631057862929,"sku":"NGR9789087284688","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9087284683.jpg?v=1765448736"},{"product_id":"intersex-and-the-non-binary-body-in-classical-muslim-legal-medical-and-literary-book-mehrdad-alipour-9789087284992","title":"Intersex and the (Non)Binary Body in Classical Muslim Legal, Medical, and Literary Discourses","description":"This book offers the first sustained scholarly exploration of intersex embodiment and identity in premodern Islam. Bringing together leading scholars in the field, it examines how classical Muslim thinkers conceptualised, categorised, and regulated bodies that defied binary understandings of sex and gender. Spanning legal reasoning, medical treatises, and literary representations, the chapters uncover the complex ways in which intersex figures--variously described in premodern sources--shaped debates over personhood, spirituality, care, legal practice, ritual, and bodily integrity. By situating these discussions within the broader intellectual and institutional history of Islam, the book demonstrates that intersex was not a marginal curiosity but a category that tested and refined classical understandings of human difference, divine creation, and social order. The volume will appeal to readers of Islamic studies, gender and sexuality studies, the history of medicine, and religious studies more broadly, inviting reflection on how traditions of interpretation continue to shape contemporary understandings of sexed and gendered embodiment within and beyond the Islamic world.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":53005811253521,"sku":null,"price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":53005811810577,"sku":"NGR9789087284992","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9789087284992.jpg?v=1767881768"},{"product_id":"rise-of-the-ni-matull-h-order-book-reza-tabandeh-9789087283674","title":"The Rise of the ni'matull. H. Order","description":"\"How were the Ni‘matull.h. masters successful in reviving Ni‘matull.h. Sufism in Shi‘ite Persia? This book investigates the revival of Ni‘matull.h. Sufi order after the death of the last Indian Ni‘matull.h. master, Ri.. ‘Al. Sh.h (d. 1214\/1799) in the Deccan. After the fall of Safavids, the revival movement of the Ni‘matull.h. order began with the arrival in Persia of the enthusiastic Indian Sufi master, Ma‘..m ‘Al. Sh.h, during the last quarter of the eighteenth century. Later, at the beginning of the nineteenth century, Persian masters of the Ni‘matull.h. Order were able to solidify the order’s place in the mystical and theological milieu of Persia. Ma‘..m ‘Al. Sh.h and his disciples soon spread their mystical and ecstatic beliefs all over Persia. They succeeded in converting a large mass of Persians to Sufi teachings, despite the opposition and persecution they faced from Shi‘ite clerics, who were politically and socially the most influential class in Persia. The book demonstrates that .usayn ‘Al. Sh.h, Majdh.b ‘Al. Sh.h, and Mast ‘Al. Sh.h were able to consolidate the social and theological role of the Ni‘matull.h. order by reinterpreting and articulating classical Sufi teachings in the light of Persian Shi.‘ite mystical theology. \"m","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":53078557458705,"sku":null,"price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":53078557622545,"sku":"NGR9789087283674","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9789087283674.jpg?v=1769816286"},{"product_id":"gender-and-sexuality-in-persian-literary-and-religious-traditions-book-ali-asghar-seyed-gohrab-9789087285005","title":"Gender and Sexuality in Persian Literary and Religious Traditions","description":"This volume offers fresh insights into themes of love, gender, sexuality, and the interaction between the profane and the spiritual in classical Persian culture, including their reception and appropriation in modern and contemporary Iranian history. Each chapter is original in its own right, offering perspectives on these interrelated concepts. Together, they provide us with a solid foundation for understanding how modern Iranians utilize their cultural heritage to protest against injustice. One striking example is the episodes from Firdowsī's Shāh-nāma, used during the 2022 \"Women, Life, Freedom\" protests. Chapters focus on masterpieces of Persian literature such as Gurgānī's Vīs-u Rāmīn, Niẓāmī's Laylī and Majnūn, Khvājū of Kirmān's Humā and Humāyūn, Feyżī's Nal-u Daman, and the intriguing genre of Shahr-āshūb (how the beloved \"upsets the town\"). The contributions embrace the complexity of love and gender in these and other works, imparting precise information about their various moral, mystical and secular dimensions. Together, these chapters offer indispensable perspectives on how Persians have conceived of love and gender, and how these works continue to inspire them in their struggle for freedom, even at the cost of their lives.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":53090171683089,"sku":null,"price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":53090171945233,"sku":"NGR9789087285005","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9789087285005.jpg?v=1770373126"},{"product_id":"agreement-restrictions-in-persian-book-anousha-sedighi-9789087280932","title":"Agreement Restrictions in Persian","description":"Agreement Restrictions in Persian is the first comprehensive attempt to tackle the issue of verbal agreement in Persian from a cross-linguistic point of view. Persian is a field of research within theoretical linguistics that is yet to be sufficiently explored. This book adopts the Minimalist Program of Chomsky (1995-2004) which is at the forefront of recent theories of formal syntax and applies it to the Persian language.     Although it is commonly believed that in Persian the verb agrees with the subject, several constructions seem to constrain this obligatory rule. Adopting the framework of Distributed Morphology, the author argues that agreement is in fact obtained with the plural inanimate subjects but a morphological rule may block the result. Unlike the previous analyses which consider the experiencer as the subject of the psychological constructions, the author argues that the psychological state is the subject of the sentence. The findings of this book not only contribute to better understanding of Persian syntax, but also have important implications for grammar theory.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":53522326126865,"sku":"NLS9789087280932","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9789087280932.jpg?v=1778752752"}],"url":"https:\/\/www.worldofbooks.com\/en-gb\/collections\/iranian-studies-series-book-series.oembed","provider":"World of Books ","version":"1.0","type":"link"}
