In his career as a poet, playwright, screenwriter, novelist, essayist, journalist, and travel writer he wrote over fifty books. He also suffered condemnation - as a leftist and a practitioner of modernism - and saw his books proscribed in the late 1930s. The first two books of the trilogy The Banquet in Blitva were written in the thirties to comment on political, psychological, artistic, and ethical issues. Such commentary had already earned him the enmity of Yugoslavia's increasingly fascistic government. He wrote and published the third book, together with the previous two, in 1962. Colonel Kristian Barutanski, lord of the mythical Baltic nation of Blitva, has freed his country from foreign oppression and now governs with an iron fist. He is opposed by Niels Nielsen, a melancholy intellectual who hurls invective at the dictator and at the hypocrisy and moral bankruptcy of society. Barutanski himself despises the sycophants beneath him and recognizes in Nielsen a genuine foe; yet Nielsen, haunted by his own lapses of conscience, struggles to escape both the regime and the role of opposition leader that is thrust upon him. In the end he flees to the neighboring state of Blatvia - and finds his new country as corrupt and as oppressive as the one he previously called home.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49571220848913,"sku":"GOR007908491","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":50364502475025,"sku":"CIN0810118629G","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ LIKE_NEW \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":51509724283153,"sku":"GOR011357513","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0810118629.jpg?v=1763478570"},{"product_id":"scar-book-ka-gunasekaran-9789354428623","title":"The Scar","description":"Growing up as a boy from the Parayar caste, in the milieu of Christian, Hindu and Muslim communities, K.A. Gunasekaran narrates the familiar tale of caste oppression and prejudice prevalent in the villages of Tamil Nadu. As the narrative unfolds, the reader is shown how the 'low' caste negotiates differently with the three religious communities. The deep pain of the Paraya surfaces through the risible anecdotes that ridicule the grievously unjust practices of the 'upper' castes. The book emphasises the fact that Indian villages are doubly caste-conscious and cruel, and that Dalit emancipation rests in better education for the community. Gunasekaran writes in an earthy and colloquial style to capture the innocence, cruelty and drama of a South Indian village.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":49754473627921,"sku":"NGR9789354428623","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9354428622.jpg?v=1751066728"},{"product_id":"grip-of-change-book-k-sivakami-9789354426902","title":"The Grip of Change","description":"The Grip of Change is the English translation of Pazhaiyana Kazhithalum, the first full-length novel by P. This translation also features Asiriyar Kurippu, the sequel in which Sivakami revisits her work. The protagonist of Book 1, Kathamuthu, is a charismatic Parayar leader. He intervenes on behalf of a Parayar woman, Thangam, beaten up by the relatives of her upper caste lover. Kathamuthu works the state machinery and the village caste hierarchy to achieve some sort of justice for Thangam. The first Tamil novel by a Dalit woman, Pazhaiyana Kazhithalum went beyond condemning caste fanatics. Sivakami is critical of the Dalit movement and Dalit patriarchy, and yet does not become a 'caste traitor' because of her participation in the search for solutions. The novel became an expression of Dalit youth--eager and working for change.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49958421430545,"sku":"GOR013823330","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":52111392243985,"sku":"NGR9789354426902","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9354426905.jpg?v=1751033190"},{"product_id":"thanos-vlekas-book-pavlos-kalligas-9780810118171","title":"Thanos Vlekas","description":"Considered the first realistic social novel ever published in Greece, this text is an ambitious portrayal of the problems in the newly established Greek state after its war of independence (1821-27).","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"US \/ GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":50364487172369,"sku":"CIN0810118173G","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0810118173.jpg?v=1763479763"},{"product_id":"scar-book-ka-gunasekaran-9789354426810","title":"The Scar","description":"Growing up as a boy from the Parayar caste, in the milieu of Christian, Hindu and Muslim communities, K.A.
