In addition to its passenger services the line handled the coal traffic from Nottingham, Lincolnshire and Yorkshire into the heart of London to feed the capital's insatiable appetite for the black stuff. The GNR's network gradually spread and through arrangements with other companies it ran trains into Manchester, from Doncaster to Leeds, and with further expansion into Derbyshire, Staffordshire and Cheshire. In 1923 the company became part of the LNER with the line from London to York forming the backbone of the East Coast Main Line to this day.  During the nineteenth century and into the twentieth, the GNR produced a varied stable of locomotives under the leadership of several high-profile Locomotive Superintendents including Sturrock, Stirling, Ivatt and, in its latter years, Nigel Gresley. Their enduring legacy were the A1 and A3 Pacifics immortalised in the iconic streamliners of the LNER era.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49533524345105,"sku":"GOR007444312","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":53444942004497,"sku":"GOR014922973","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1445634155.jpg?v=1763221001"},{"product_id":"locomotives-of-the-lancashire-central-coalfield-book-alan-davies-9781445634838","title":"Locomotives of the Lancashire Central Coalfield","description":"The old Bridgewater Trustees mineral railways were to become the Central Railways of the huge Manchester Collieries concern, which was formed in March 1929. The landscape with its changing, suddenly abrupt and often fierce gradients was to be a cruel one for these colliery locomotives which were worked virtually constantly to their limits. From Worsley to Linnyshaw Colliery, east of Walkden, the average gradient had been 1 in 52 with the occasional 1 in 30 stretch! The locomotives were varied but post-war included many of the Hunslet-designed Austerity, as well as a series of ex-North Staffordshire Railway locomotives. Alan Davies, in a companion volume to his previous work on Walken Yard itself, tells the story of the locomotives that were based there, were maintained and repaired there and that sometimes finished their working lives at Walkden Yard.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49553377952017,"sku":"GOR007792883","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":49732718788881,"sku":"NGR9781445634838","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/144563483X.jpg?v=1761141717"},{"product_id":"locomotives-of-the-north-eastern-railway-book-john-s-maclean-9781445637815","title":"Locomotives of the North Eastern Railway","description":"A contemporary account of the NER's locomotives covering the company's formative years from 1841 up to the re-grouping of 1923. They must traverse treacherous mountain grades, making each trip a challenge to the crew and the equipment. Since the early days of rail transportation, the railways have used the latest steam and diesel locomotives to move freight and passengers over this topography. The trains of today haul an incredible amount of tonnage across this terrain and the modern motive power in use is up to the task. Contemporary engines built by EMD and GE with up to 4,000 hp per unit are used to haul unit coal, intermodal and general freight across these routes.  Focusing primarily on the Norfolk Southern Railway, photographer Christopher Esposito looks at these great modern machines as they navigate through some of the most iconic locations on the railways of the Eastern United States.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":49731760357649,"sku":"NGR9781445683027","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":53128841298193,"sku":"GOR011890006","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1445683024.jpg?v=1761141082"},{"product_id":"locomotives-of-the-highland-railway-book-john-christopher-9781445633619","title":"Locomotives of the Highland Railway","description":"A fascinating collection of original photographs of Highland Railway locomotives. Many of the early locomotives were acquired through amalgamations with other companies. Under a trio of chief mechanical engineers, including John Craven, William Stroudley, Robert and Lawson Billington, father and son, and Douglas Earle Marsh the company built or purchased well over 1,000 steam locomotives, many of which were handed over to the Southern Railway in the 1923 grouping of Britain's independent railway companies. To this day the former LBSCR lines form the backbone of the south east coast network. This account covers the years 1839 - 1903. This fascinating account of the LBSCR's locomotives was originally published in 1903, and is profusely illustrated with over 140 line drawings.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":50789281890577,"sku":"GOR009375869","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":50859604312337,"sku":"GOR007156006","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1445634449.jpg?v=1760522437"},{"product_id":"locomotives-of-the-western-united-states-book-jonathan-lewis-9781445669106","title":"Locomotives of the Western United States","description":"The first transcontinental railroad in the USA was completed in 1869. In the following years, until the turn of the twentieth century, many more railroads were built by different companies. Passenger trains declined from the 1950s and today there is only a minimal long-distance passenger service operated by Amtrak, leaving the railroads to concentrate on moving freight. From the 1970s until the 1990s many railroads merged to give the two main railroads there are in the west today: Burlington Northern Santa Fe and Union Pacific. As well as the two mega railroads, there are many regional and shortline railroads to add diversity.  Locomotives in the USA today are mainly built by General Electric and Electro Motive Diesel. Modern diesels for long-distance mainline freight trains are up to 4,400 hp with six axles. These long-distance trains can weigh up to 20,000 tonnes and often have multiple locomotives that can be at the front, middle and rear. There are also many older diesels for local work, some dating from the 1950s.  This book features a selection of photos of mainline and branch-line trains with a wide selection of different locomotives and paint schemes across the western states.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":51683369681169,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":51683370270993,"sku":"GOR009046167","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1445669102.jpg?v=1763220407"}],"url":"https:\/\/www.worldofbooks.com\/en-gb\/collections\/locomotives-of-the-book-series.oembed","provider":"World of Books ","version":"1.0","type":"link"}
