Monaghan, was murdered as he returned on foot to Castleblayney after visiting the estate's model farm at Corratanty. The murder sent shock waves from Castleblayney to Westminster. This book sets out to examine the murder in the context of landlord-tenant relations at a time of extraordinary socio-economic upheaval in the aftermath of the Great Famine. This work sets out to reappraise the motivation behind the murder in the broader context of the Irish land question. It questions whether the crime was part of a Ribbon conspiracy or simply a desperate measure taken by a desperate tenantry. It also elucidates the criminal procedure that led to the execution of three men and the acquittal of numerous.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49558649110801,"sku":"GOR008223105","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1846820081.jpg?v=1751346365"},{"product_id":"music-and-dancing-at-castletown-co-kildare-1759-1821-book-karol-mullaney-dignam-9781846822964","title":"Music and Dancing at Castletown, Co. Kildare, 1759-1821","description":"Ireland's Castletown - near Celbridge in Co. Kildare - was the home of the Right Honorable Thomas Conolly and his wife Lady Louisa Augusta (nee Lennox). A well-connected, high-society couple, the Conollys received invitations to the most exclusive social events in Dublin and London and were closely associated with formal social life at Dublin Castle. By the 1780s, their magnificent residence was a center of fashionable sociability in which music and dancing were significant agents. This study shows how music and dancing functioned in terms of social education: prominent music- and dancing-masters were employed and musical instruments purchased for members of the extended Conolly family. This scholarly examination of music and dancing (as aspects of domiciliary sociability), entertainment and education, provides new perspectives on the form, function, and furnishing of a Georgian country house in Ireland. It also provides a useful framework for investigating the lives of the various people who lived and worked therein. The background to the burning of Michael Henry Burke's house is charted alongside the rise of land agitation and unrest in east Galway. With branches all over each Galway, the Land League and the United Irish League voiced the disquiet of land-hungry tenants and sought relief for its landless members. At Ballydugan, the collective expression and systematic protest for the transfer of land ownership included boycotting, landlord intimidation, cattle drives, and damage to property. This book also offers a unique insight into the often unheard of landlord experience and perspective on agitation offered by Burke's granddaughter, Mrs. Claire Besnyoe. Her recollections and reflections on the family's decision to remain as landowners in the new Irish state and beyond, bring a distinctive element to this study. The consequences of the Burkes continued occupancy were not anticipated by the agitating Ballydugan tenants and the ownership of this estate continued to be a source of ongoing contention for several decades afterwards. It is unmatched as a turbulent period in national history, and at a local level in County Galway. Despite this, there has been no local survey of the period until now. Galway from 1910 to 1923 often seems paradoxical. A highly disruptive county with many of the island's poorest inhabitants, Galway appeared ready to erupt once politics were radicalized in the absence of emigration during the years of the Great War (1914-1918). Yet revolution - as seen in Tipperary, Cork, and elsewhere - was never to materialize. By any standards of assessment, Galway saw only low intensity fighting throughout the revolutionary years. However, there is no denying that the contribution of Galway - small in many respects - cannot be dismissed from the annals of the War of Independence. The same is true of the Civil War. Sligo by focusing on the activities of the Riverstown United Irish League (UIL) branch. One of the most dramatic incidents of the agitation occurred in October 1908, when a young man named John Stenson was shot dead by the police at a cattle drive in Riverstown. At this time, the Riverstown UIL branch was operating a boycott of local Protestants (who refused to join or subscribe to the league) that led to a government prosecution known as the 'Riverstown conspiracy' case. Some of the major issues in Irish rural society during the period were played out at local level in Riverstown: the debate over law and order * the importation and distribution of guns * the tensions created in the nationalist movement by the Ranch War agitation * the emergence of a more extreme form of nationalism * unionist concerns over the fate of the loyal Protestant minority in the west of Ireland. While the various incidents at Riverstown may have been parochial in nature, they acquired national significance and, as this study reveals, attracted the attention of the leading politicians of the day. A Tour in Ireland in 1775 derided Ireland's cultural achievements and the morals and manners of the inhabitants. Most famously it described the people of Connaught as 'savages' and the legs of Ireland's women-folk as less than svelte. The resulting outcry saw dozens of newspaper articles, squibs, poems and caricatures aimed at the unfortunate tourist. This can be seen as evidence of a newly politicized Irish 'nation' spoiling for a fight. But the episode also sheds important light on publishing and print culture in Dublin. Twiss could see the value of courting controversy, and Dublin's printers and booksellers set him up as a pantomime villain to ensure steady sales. An item sold by printers that married the new consumer culture of eighteenth-century Ireland with popular patriotism: a chamber pot at the bottom of which was emblazoned Twiss's image, thus allowing any right-thinking Irish man or woman to urinate on this most hated member of the Royal Society.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":51355340964113,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":51355340996881,"sku":"GOR010426129","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1846821932.jpg?v=1750930721"},{"product_id":"transportation-of-women-from-kildare-to-van-diemen-s-land-in-1849-book-catherine-fleming-9781846823565","title":"The Transportation of Women from Kildare to Van Diemen's Land in 1849","description":"More women convicts were transported to Van Diemen's Land from Ireland in 1849 than any other year. This is the story of several women from Kildare who made the arduous journey as the Great Famine raged. One was a married woman convicted of murder and two others were young women who deliberately committed the crime of arson in order to be 'sent out.' The youngest, Elizabeth Curry from Naas, was only thirteen when convicted and sentenced to transportation. Many of these convicts were first-time offenders and contradicted their stereotype as fallen women and hardened criminals. The book follows the history of these women from their convictions and sentencing in the court at Naas, to their arrival, following a long and dangerous journey, at their new home in the penal colony at Hobart. For many of these young women, transportation, despite its hardships, presented the opportunity to make a new life, emancipated from the poverty and economic deprivation of a famine-ridden Ireland. The Ormond and Liberty Boys have achieved a considerable measure of renown but the picture of them available to date is misleading and incomplete. The object of this study is to set the Liberty and Ormond Boys in their contemporary context. The conditions necessary to enable factions to develop and flourish in Dublin were in place by the 1720s, when the city was sufficiently developed physically and demographically to sustain the local and sectoral identities that faction required. Nonetheless, the growth of faction could not have taken place without the breakdown in the authority of the guilds or in the absence of recreational patterns that validated violence. Beginning with the emergence of the Kevan Bail in 1729, the city was periodically racked over the following sixty years by sharp busts of violence as the contending factions sought to establish which was dominant. As the best known and most enduring the interlinked histories of the Ormond and Liberty Boys provide the centre piece of this study, but the histories of a host of lesser known factions from all part of Dublin city and county are recovered in this, the first modern attempt to establish the nature and extent of urban faction and the purpose of the violence it spawned.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":51573903950097,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":51573904081169,"sku":"GOR008156824","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":51580874424593,"sku":"GOR008154495","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1851828974.jpg?v=1751346656"},{"product_id":"death-of-fr-john-walsh-at-kilgraney-book-maura-cronin-9781846822636","title":"The Death of Fr John Walsh at Kilgraney","description":null,"brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":51820328616209,"sku":null,"price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":51820328911121,"sku":"GOR014411971","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9781846822636.jpg?v=1752573414"},{"product_id":"sir-charles-domvile-and-the-management-of-his-shankill-estate-co-dublin-1857-68-book-rob-goodbody-9781851827619","title":"Sir Charles Domvile and the Management of His Shankill Estate, Co.Dublin, 1857-68","description":null,"brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":52435526287633,"sku":null,"price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":52435526615313,"sku":"GOR010601461","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9781851827619.jpg?v=1759183913"}],"url":"https:\/\/www.worldofbooks.com\/en-gb\/collections\/maynooth-studies-in-local-history-ser-book-series.oembed","provider":"World of Books ","version":"1.0","type":"link"}
