A theatre-in-education project coordinated by Tamasha theatre company and The Migration Museum, children worked on exercises designed to develop their understanding of, and feelings about, migration. Their reactions were then incorporated into a piece of theatre by a professional playwright that the students then performed. This collection brings together these plays along with the unique exercises that inspired them. The plays include: Nothing to Declare by Sharmila Chauhan follows three precious keepsakes and the stories attached to them as their owners are stopped at a hostile border. Potato Moon by Satinder Chohan focuses on the potatoes buried in a share allotment. They become people’s memories in a magical realist Southall and so when they start to go missing, schoolgirl Mira set out to find out why. Wilkommen by Asif Khan follows 11 year Ammar on the most dangerous journey of his life, from war-torn country, across sea and land, to take up the offer of a new life in Europe. Jigsaw by Sumerah Srivstav tells the story of how three angels, horrified by mankind’s cruelty, prepare to wipe them out… until they find an unlikely friend who changes their mind. This is an invaluable collection that gives both teachers the resources to address the sometimes tricky issues surrounding migration and students the opportunity to create and in doing so counteract and humanize the narratives hear in the media and society as a whole.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49567926681873,"sku":"GOR010639567","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":49732186439953,"sku":"NGR9781350090415","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ LIKE_NEW \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":50602942628113,"sku":"GOR014011040","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":53059078881553,"sku":"NIN9781350090415","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1350090417.jpg?v=1751443153"},{"product_id":"tanika-gupta-historical-plays-book-tanika-gupta-9781786825452","title":"Tanika Gupta: Historical Plays","description":"The second collection of plays by acclaimed British dramatist Tanika Gupta includes The Empress, Lions and Tigers and her adaptation of Great Expectations.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ LIKE_NEW \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49583056421137,"sku":"GOR010746190","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":51050995876113,"sku":"NIN9781786825452","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1786825457.jpg?v=1751457581"},{"product_id":"contemporary-queer-plays-by-russian-playwrights-book-tatiana-klepikova-9781350203761","title":"Contemporary Queer Plays by Russian Playwrights","description":"Contemporary Queer Plays by Russian Playwrights is the first anthology of LGBTQ-themed plays written by Russian queer authors and straight allies in the 21st century. The book features plays by established and emergent playwrights of the Russian drama scene, including Roman Kozyrchikov, Andrey Rodionov and Ekaterina Troepolskaya, Valery Pecheykin, Natalya Milanteva, Olzhas Zhanaydarov, Vladimir Zaytsev, and Elizaveta Letter. Writing for children, teenagers, and adults, these authors explore gay, lesbian, trans, and other queer lives in prose and in verse. From a confession-style solo play to poetic satire on contemporary Russia; from a play for children to love dramas that have been staged for adult-only audiences in Moscow and other cities, this important anthology features work that was written around or after 2013—the year when the law on the prohibition of “propaganda of non-traditional sexual relations among minors” was passed by the Russian government. These plays are universal stories of humanity that spread a message of tolerance, acceptance, and love and make clear that a queer scenario does not necessarily have to end in a tragedy just because it was imagined and set in Russia. They show that breathing, growing old, falling in love, falling out of love, and falling in love again can be just as challenging and rewarding in Moscow and elsewhere in Russia as it can be in New York, Tokyo, Johannesburg, or Buenos Aires.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49617657364753,"sku":"GOR012700097","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":49737581396241,"sku":"NGR9781350203761","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52111697772817,"sku":"NIN9781350203761","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1350203769.jpg?v=1751017240"},{"product_id":"contemporary-plays-by-african-women-book-yvette-hutchison-9781350034518","title":"Contemporary Plays by African Women","description":"This volume uniquely draws together seven contemporary plays by a selection of the finest African women writers and practitioners from across the continent, offering a rich and diverse portrait of identity, politics, culture, gender issues and society in contemporary Africa. Niqabi Ninja by Sara Shaarawi (Egypt) is set in Cairo during the chaotic time of the Egyptian uprising. Not That Woman by Tosin Jobi-Tume (Nigeria) addresses issues of violence against women in Nigeria and its attendant conspiracy of silence. The play advocates zero-tolerance for violence against women and urges women to bury shame and speak out rather than suffer in silence. I Want To Fly by Thembelihle Moyo (Zimbabwe) tells the story of an African girl who wants to be a pilot. It looks at how patriarchal society shapes the thinking of men regarding lobola (bride price), how women endure abusive men and the role society at large plays in these issues. Silent Voices by Adong Judith (Uganda) is a one-act play based on interviews with people involved in the LRA and the effects of the civil war in Uganda. It critiques this, and by implication, other truth commissions. Unsettled by JC Niala (Kenya) deals with gender violence, land issues and relations of both black and white Kenyans living in, and returning to, the country. Mbuzeni by Koleka Putuma (South Africa) is a story of four female orphans, aged eight to twelve, their sisterhood and their fixation with death and burials. It explores the unseen force that governs and dictates the laws that the villagers live by. Bonganyi by Sophia Kwachuh Mempuh (Cameroon) depicts the effects of colonialism as told through the story of a slave girl: a singer and dancer, who wants to win a competition to free her family. Each play also includes a biography of the playwright, the writer’s own artistic statement, a production history of the play and a critical contextualisation of the theatrical landscape from which each woman is writing.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":49731568271633,"sku":"NGR9781350034518","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":50657945944337,"sku":"GOR010079454","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52748297404689,"sku":"NIN9781350034518","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1350034517.jpg?v=1751402967"},{"product_id":"seeking-common-ground-latinx-and-latin-american-theatre-and-performance-book-trevor-boffone-9781350230200","title":"Seeking Common Ground: Latinx and Latin American Theatre and Performance","description":"Honorable Mention from the 2022 International Latino Book Awards for Best Nonfiction - Multi-Author A curated collection of new Latinx and Latin American plays, monologues, interviews, and critical essays that asks the question: what is the common ground between Latinx and Latin American artists? This anthology of selected plays brings together his shorter works for the first time into one volume that expands his legacy and confirms his place as one of Britain's key writing talents of the twentieth century. Originally an actor, Fagon’s writing for the stage, film and television grew throughout the early 1970s, before his breakaway hit The Death of A Black Man was produced at the Hampstead Theatre in 1975. Now one of British theatre's most well-known names, Fagon’s legacy is secured due in no small part to the commemorative award in his honour that was established following his death in 1986, to recognise Black British playwrights from the Caribbean, resident in the United Kingdom. Brought together with a critical introduction from Dawn Walton OBE, this collection also includes a reflection and response from a former winner of the Alfred Fagon award, Juliet Gilkes Romero. The answer seems obvious. But Telling Our Stories of Home, an international collection of eleven plays by and about women from Lebanon, Haiti, Venezuela, Uganda, Palestine, Brazil, India, UK, and the US, complicates the answer. The \"answer\" includes stories as far-ranging as: enslaved women trying to create a home, one by any means necessary, and one in the ocean; siblings wrestling with their differing devotion to home after their mother’s death; a family wrestling with the government's refusal to allow the burial of their soldier-son in their hometown; a young scholar attempting to feel at home after studying abroad; a young man fleeing home due to his sexual orientation only to discover the difficulty of creating home elsewhere, and Siddis (Indians of African descent) continuing to struggle for acceptance despite having lived in India for over 600 years. These are voices seldom represented to a larger audience. The plays and performance pieces range from 20 to 90-minute pieces and include a mix of monologue, duologue, and ensemble plays. Short yet powerful, they allow fantastic performance opportunities particularly in an age of social-distancing with flexible casts that together invite the theme of home to be performed and studied on the page. Featuring an introduction from Crouch that explains the origin of the five plays and their performance processes, the I, Shakespeare collection provides a fresh perspective on some of theatre’s most well-known stories, finding the parallels between the Bard’s time and present day.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":49747231899921,"sku":"NGR9781350439306","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":52470099902737,"sku":"GOR014533208","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52806602621201,"sku":"NIN9781350439306","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1350439304.jpg?v=1751369442"},{"product_id":"plays-from-contemporary-hungary-difficult-women-and-resistant-dramatic-voices-book-szilvi-naray-9781350370722","title":"Plays from Contemporary Hungary: Difficult Women and Resistant Dramatic Voices","description":"A unique collection of five contemporary plays from 21st-century Hungary, translated into English for the first time. Written by some of Hungary’s most highly prolific and commercially successful dramatic voices, these plays are being produced in their native Hungary by theatres that do not adhere to Viktor Orbán's values and offer a counterpoint to the commercial Boulevard Theatre scene of Budapest. Translator and theatre-maker Szilvi Naray champions these unheard voices through her performable and dramatically engaging translations. The plays are aimed at micro-budget productions and offer a special opportunity for students and small theatre companies alike to engage with these witty, politically irreverent plays, finally in English. Each of the selected playwrights has been in direct conflict with the Hungarian government and has been demonised by the state-controlled press. The five plays are thematically threaded together by their common use of strong leading female protagonists with an overarching theme of the family unit. Through the edited introduction the themes and feminine translation strategy discusses how the plays offer a microcosmic lens for understanding the paradox that today’s Hungary exemplifies, making this a necessary study into the world of contemporary Hungary through drama.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":49749825061137,"sku":"NGR9781350370722","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/135037072X.jpg?v=1751208123"},{"product_id":"plays-by-paco-bezerra-cutting-edge-spanish-theatre-book-paco-bezerra-9781350367562","title":"Plays by Paco Bezerra: Cutting-Edge Spanish Theatre","description":"This vital anthology includes fresh translations of four of Paco Bezerra's plays in one edited collection for the first time in English. Winner of the National Literary Drama Award in 2009 and the Calderon de la Barca Theatre Drama Prize for New Authors in 2007, Paco Bezerra has become one of the most lauded and essential voices in the Spanish theatrical scene. His works have received both critical and audience acclaim, and his plays have been performed throughout Europe, South America and Asia. In the four plays included in this volume, Bezerra addresses critical issues such as child abuse, racism and women’s rights. And, in a manner common to all of his works, Bezerra continually explores how marginalization weaves into all aspects of human existence. During an intense and short-lived period from 1877 to 1881, the London stage saw fierce competition as playwrights and theatre managers raced to capture the zeitgeist, capitalizing on the unorthodox, eccentric and highly theatrical proponents of the Aesthetic Movement. The ‘quite too utterly utter’ Apostles of this new school were satirized to such an extent that the Illustrated London News (1881) complained that the London stage was ‘thickly sown over with a crop of lilies and sunflowers’, with ‘aesthetes in every burlesque and comic opera produced’. Despite international recognition, her plays remain little performed in the UK, an absence which makes this anthology of new translations a welcome contribution to British theatre culture, and to the English-speaking stage. Prolific since the 1960s, Gambaro’s plays are radical, subversive, and endlessly inventive in the use of form and theatricality. This is a theatre of resistance which has the potential to make searing comments on our own domestic and political contexts, an experience which may not be comfortable but is always vital. Dazzling, original, incisive and poetic, this anthology shows Griselda Gambaro at the height of her creative powers. Siamese Twins (1967) In this charged and forceful play, two brothers (one weak, one strong) play out a primal scene of envy, cruelty and torture as one exerts his power and aggression over the other. Mother by Trade (1999) In a stark process of truth and reconciliation, a daughter meets her estranged mother forty years after she abandoned her as an infant. As the Dream Dictates (2002) How can we look to the future if there is great trauma in our past? In this play, only the untethered thinking that comes with dreaming allows us the freedom to imagine. Asking Too Much (2004) In this enigmatic two-hander, the roles played by a man and a woman in the game of human attachment are renegotiated. Persistence (2007) Inspired by the real life event of the 2004 Beslan massacre in Russia, Persistence is a poetic play which goes to the heart of human tragedy. Dear Ibsen, I Am Nora (2013) Nora, the character created by Henrik Ibsen in A Doll’s House, decides to confront her creator and to debate with him her own words and actions. The Gift (2015) Márgara is a woman with the gift of prophecy… but people do not believe her, even though she predicts hope for the world. Will humanity be able to hear her?","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":51023412625681,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":51023413477649,"sku":"NIN9781350233645","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52402424054033,"sku":"NLS9781350233645","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1350233641.jpg?v=1751464070"},{"product_id":"plays-from-contemporary-hungary-difficult-women-and-resistant-dramatic-voices-book-szilvi-naray-9781350370739","title":"Plays from Contemporary Hungary: ‘Difficult Women’ and Resistant Dramatic Voices","description":"A unique collection of five contemporary plays from 21st-century Hungary, translated into English for the first time. Through the edited introduction the themes and feminine translation strategy discusses how the plays offer a microcosmic lens for understanding the paradox that today’s Hungary exemplifies, making this a necessary study into the world of contemporary Hungary through drama.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":51023421407505,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":51023422554385,"sku":"NIN9781350370739","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52121016992017,"sku":"NLS9781350370739","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1350370738.jpg?v=1751177154"},{"product_id":"writing-queer-performance-book-fintan-walsh-9781350431492","title":"Writing Queer Performance","description":"This anthology documents a decade of some of the UK’s most exciting queer performance, through a combination of retrospective scripts, development material and visual documentation. Queer performance is expected to live a brief, bright life without leaving any textual record. Indeed, it rarely begins with a complete script at all, being often developed instead by performance practices designed to fill noisy bars, clinking cabaret venues and fringe theatres, typically for short runs. This lack of textual documentation underplays the importance of writing to contemporary queer performance, while rendering it vulnerable to disappearance in the diaphanous archives of memory. Writing Queer Performance: Contemporary Texts and Documents features eight seminal works, captured through performance texts and visual documentation, that ensures their accessibility long after the event of live performance. Supported by a contextualizing introduction, the anthology provides a panoramic view of contemporary preoccupations, processes and practices.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":51023425732881,"sku":"NIN9781350431492","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":51215920431377,"sku":"NGR9781350431492","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1350431494.jpg?v=1751419543"},{"product_id":"krishna-kumari-the-tragedy-of-india-book-rahul-sagar-9781350453845","title":"Krishna Kumari: The Tragedy of India","description":"Krishna Kumari: The Tragedy of India introduces readers to the first English language play in modern India. Written in 1826 by English Subba Rao, one of the first Indians to be schooled in English, Krishna Kumari depicts the true story of a princess of Udaipur who is forced to commit suicide in order to end a war started by her suitors, the rulers of the neighboring kingdoms of Jaipur and Jodhpur. Tragically, her death proves to be in vain because the mercenaries recruited by the contending rulers nevertheless proceed to plunder the region. All three kingdoms are then compelled to seek the protection of the East India Company, bringing their independence to an end. Sharp and witty, Krishna Kumari was intended to warn Indian principalities against the follies that led to the downfall of the Rajputs. Unfortunately, the play scarcely saw the light of day. Angered by Subba Rao’s opposition to their power, the British forced him to withdraw from public life. This is why audiences have never heard of Krishna Kumari—until now. Building on extensive archival research, this volume brings Subba Rao’s pioneering drama back to life. The introductory essay by Rahul Sagar, a leading scholar of nineteenth century India, familiarizes readers with the remarkable characters in the play and the violent era in which they lived. Described as a 'playwright with the ability to become one of the best of his generation' (British Theatre Guide), his work to date is known to probe both social norms and ethical issues. Since being nominated for the Evening Standard's Most Promising Playwright Award in 2005 his plays have been produced at venues of all sizes from London's National Theatre and the Hampstead to Theatre Royal Bath and the Menier Chocolate Factory. Often bitingly funny, Koogler’s plays…reveal larger truths about the economic and racial systems under which we all live.” (The Yale Review) Abe Koogler writes darkly comedic plays about ordinary Americans confronting larger political and economic forces, from small town residents grappling with environmental change to slaughterhouse workers trying to retain their humanity. Although grounded in realism, Koogler’s plays often incorporate imaginary elements and heightened or musical language, creating moving and memorable works of art. In his first play collection, Koogler’s work is brought together and introduced by the author, offering an overview of his range in style, from the naturalistic to the absurd. Nowhere has this been more apparent than at the Obie Award-winning The Fire This Time Festival in New York City. Since being founded in 2009, this theater festival has become the destination for emerging and early career playwrights from the African diaspora. Inequality in education and healthcare, skewed and negative images of Black people in mainstream media, racism in policing, widespread gentrification and its effects on multi-generational Black neighbourhoods, and the growth of Black love; these conversations have been happening in the US, and The Fire This Time Festival has borne witness. 25 Plays from The Fire This Time Festival: A Decade of Recognition, Resistance, Resilience, Rebirth, and Black Theater reflects this fantastic legacy, containing 25 ten-minute plays originally produced by the eponymous festival. Together, these pieces bookend the Black experience in the US from 2009 to the present day: from the hope for further progress and equity under the Obama administration, to the existential threat faced by Black people under the Trump presidency. Edited and curated by Kelley Nicole Girod, the anthology divides the plays into seven thematic sections concerning multi-faceted aspects of the Black experience, featuring work by seminal writers such as Katori Hall, Antoinette Nwandu, Dominique Morisseau, C.A. Johnson, and Marcus Gardley. Both timely and timeless, 25 Plays from The Fire This Time Festival presents an exciting, eclectic mix of 21st century theater that is perfect for study, performance, and reflection.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":51023463383313,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":51023463842065,"sku":"NIN9781350268111","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52145906745617,"sku":"NLS9781350268111","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1350268119.jpg?v=1751467268"},{"product_id":"selected-plays-by-cuban-playwright-abel-gonzalez-melo-book-abel-melo-9781350453791","title":"Selected Plays by Cuban Playwright Abel González Melo","description":"‘One of Cuba’s most important living playwrights, Abel González Melo is known for a hybrid poetics in which he employs contemporary formal features, such as non-linear storytelling and flashbacks, interwoven with elements from the classical tradition in order to stage the ignoble realities of postmodern life.’ - Lillian Manzor, University of Miami Born in Havana in 1980, Abel González Melo is a rare example of a modern-day Cuban playwright whose work is performed and celebrated not only in Cuba, but also in the US, the Americas more widely, Europe, and beyond. Investigating a raft of national and global themes, such as queer sexuality, the dilemma of leaving or remaining, political power and censorship, family dynamics, the ambition and responsibility of the artist, and so-called ‘cancel culture’, González Melo’s work is international and universal in scope. The result of a twenty-year collaboration with translator William Gregory that began at the Royal Court Theatre in London, this collection of six plays follows the playwright’s eclectic two-decade career: from his beginning with texts exploring the pulsing underworld of early-2000s Havana in Chamaco and Nevada, through an examination of political turning points and major figures of Cuban history in Weathered and Outside the Game, to his most recent takes on theatre and its intersection with contemporary issues in Tell Me the Whole Thing Again and Abyss. Complete with an edited introduction by Ernesto Fundora, this volume of selected plays surveys not only González Melo’s oeuvre but also his distinctive stylistic and aesthetic variety, gained from living in both Spain and Cuba.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":51023465021713,"sku":"NIN9781350453791","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52596921827601,"sku":"NLS9781350453791","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/135045379X.jpg?v=1750793022"},{"product_id":"golden-tongues-book-barbara-fuchs-9781350431553","title":"Golden Tongues","description":"A first-of-its-kind anthology that explores adaptations of 17th-century Hispanic comedia within contemporary Los Angeles theater. Focusing on the narratives of Black men and women carrying the hopes and dreams of a generation, Morrow writes stories of dreams deferred, lives incarcerated, and families broken by circumstance who strive to beat the stereotypes of Blackness. Bending time to create hyperreal poetic engagements with anti-Blackness and systemic racism, Morrow questions who has the audacity of hope while living within circumstances that anticipate premature death. Morrow’s poignant characters speak truth to power directly from their hearts as they present as unapologetically Black in a world that is indifferent to, and fatigued by, claims of racism and inequality.
