Redeposited pottery provided rare evidence for Middle Bronze Age  activity in the area of the City of London. Early Roman quarrying  and timber buildings were followed by increased development from  c. AD 70. By the late 2nd century the area included masonry  buildings, some possessing tessellated floors. Building alignments indicate the route of a Roman road immediately to the  north of the site, beneath Watling Street. One Roman building was  occupied until the late 4th century, its ruins covered by 'dark  earth'. Four cellared buildings had been constructed on the site  by the mid 11th century, and pre-dated Friday Street and the  Church of St Werburga, later St John the Evangelist. The church  was founded between 1098 and 1108, and was rebuilt with a wider  chancel in the 13th or 14th century. Early 3rd-century  redevelopment included a substantial masonry building and a subterranean drainage culvert which carried dirty water south  from Cornhill to the Thames. It remained in use until the mid 4th  century AD and has been preserved  in situ  beneath the new development. At 13-21 Eastcheap early buildings were sealed by  Hadrianic fire debris. Rebuilding included timber drains and  fragmentary masonry buildings. Later reoccupation at Monument  House included a 10th-century AD sunken-floored building and  medieval properties. A large 15th-century tenement east of  Botolph Lane and north of Cat Lane was remodelled before destruction in the Great Fire. The finds assemblage includes rare ironwork, an ornate fireplace and decorated tiles. Excavations  between 1974 and 1976 uncovered extensive archaeological remains,  including the base of a masonry structure which was originally  interpreted by the excavator as a 3rd-century military signalling  tower. Lakin et al argue that early Roman quarrying gave way to a  cremation cemetery during the 2nd century. The construction of  the 9m square 'tower', dated to the 2nd century or later, is  consistent with that of a mausoleum. In the 3rd century the area  was divided into plots, first by fences and later by ditches, and  a timber building and other structures associated with domestic  occupation were established. Animal bone evidence suggests that  large-scale butchery took place nearby. In the mid 4th century  the field boundaries were infilled and industrial tanks and  drains built. A leather bikini was found in one of the  timber-lined tanks. Demolition of the masonry structure,  deposition of rubble, and the subsequent accumulation of an  agricultural soil marked the abandonment of the area in the  second half of the 4th century. Two inhumation burials may also  date to this period. The finds assemblages from Shadwell are  large for a non-urban site, but there were relatively few  military finds.
