Using an image-heavy, magazine-style format, these Special Editions should appeal to scholars, enthusiasts, and general readers alike. The German heavy cruiser Prinz Eugen was a remarkable vessel by any standard. She was arguably one of the most handsome major warships ever constructed. The third ship of the Admiral Hipper-class and named for a French hero of the Austrian Empire, the ship represented the spirit and tradition of the old Austro-Hungarian Royal and Imperial navy. She participated in some of the most interesting naval actions of World War II in European waters including the Battle of the Denmark Strait where she helped the German battleship Bismarck sink the British battlecruiser Hood, and the Channel Dash ten months later when she sailed through the English Channel in broad daylight, successfully repelling British sea and air attacks along the way. She fought the Russians in the Baltic and was the largest German warship to survive the war. Handed over to the Americans as a war prize and given hull number IX-300, she was sunk in an atomic bomb test at Bikini Atoll in the Marshall Islands. Today, her wreck is a popular dive attraction in shallow water at Kwajalein Atoll. This book provides more than just a complete record of Prinz Eugen's career. The collection of maps and photographs reveals every aspect of her brief but intense time afloat and O'Hara reviews her design and equipment with meticulous detail. When launched, the German cruiser was one of the most technologically advanced warships afloat with the world's best electronics suite, and with sensors so advanced, the Americans had nothing similar (her hydrophones detected Hood at more than twenty miles). This is an in-depth look at the remarkable career of a remarkable ship.
Building on the expertise of the authors and historians of the Naval Institute Press, the Naval History Special Editions are designed to offer studies of the key vessels, battles, and events of armed conflict. Building upon the expertise of the authors and historians of the Naval Institute Press, the Naval History Special Editions are designed to offer studies of the key vessels, battles, and events of armed conflict. Using an image-heavy format, these Special Editions should appeal to scholars, enthusiasts, and general readers alike. From its first flight in 1955, the F8U Crusader proved to be an extraordinary aircraft, establishing a renowned fighter legacy for naval aviation. Building on its success with the F4U Corsair, aviator pioneer Chance Vought brought the Navy into the supersonic age with the Crusader, the first carrier-based fighter to exceed 1,000 mph in level flight. The Crusader earned the Navy its first Thompson Trophy for military aircraft speed and won the Collier Trophy for its innovative carrier suitability features. In 1957 future astronaut John Glenn set a new intercontinental speed record in an F8U-1P, flying from California to New York in just 3 hours and 23 minutes. At a time when guns were being replaced by missiles, Vought designers retained an integrated aircraft cannon, solidifying the Crusader’s reputation as the “Last of the Gunfighters” and earning the loyalty of its pilots. The contribution of the Crusader to U.S. Cold War operations was substantial. The F8U-1P photoreconnaissance variant, the longest-serving Crusader model, debuted operationally during the Cuban Missile Crisis, providing irrefutable low-level imagery of Soviet activity. During the Vietnam War, Crusader pilots achieved an enviable 6-to-1 kill ratio, outperforming both Air Force and Navy F-4 Phantom pilots—a testament to the aircraft’s maneuverability and the dogfighting ethos of the Crusader’s pilot community. The Crusader retired from U.S. Navy service in 1987, but its legacy endured as it continued to serve with the Philippine Air Force and the French Navy until 1999, forty-four years after its first flight. Author Ernest Snowden, a former naval aviator, provides an in-depth look at the design and operational history of this iconic aircraft, making this book a must-read for air combat history enthusiasts.
Building on the expertise of the authors and historians of the Naval Institute Press, the Naval History Special Editions are designed to offer studies of the key vessels, battles, and events of armed conflict. This richly illustrated Naval History Special Edition captures the ship’s evolution through war, Cold War innovation, and space-age missions—now preserved as a living memorial. Building on the expertise of the authors and historians of the Naval Institute Press, the Naval History Special Editions are designed to offer studies of the key vessels, battles, and events of armed conflict. Nicknamed “The Fighting Lady,” USS Yorktown (CV 10) is one of the most iconic and enduring vessels in American naval history. The steel hull carries the marks of three major conflicts, a lunar recovery mission, and sweeping changes in naval warfare across the twentieth century. Commissioned in 1943, Yorktown entered the Pacific Theater at a critical moment during World War II. From raids on Truk and the Gilbert and Marshall Islands to the Marianas Turkey Shoot and on to other decisive battles of the war, Yorktown helped define fast-carrier strike operations that reshaped naval combat. After the war, Yorktown was placed in reserve but then reactivated as Cold War tensions rose. The Navy’s modernization programs adapted the carrier for jet aircraft, installing an angled flight deck, reinforcing flight operations for faster planes, and enhancing antisubmarine capabilities. Reclassified as CVS 10, Yorktown returned to active service during the Vietnam War. In 1968 the ship undertook a different mission: recovering Apollo 8, the first human spaceflight to orbit the moon. This linked naval operations to national technological ambitions during the space race, highlighting the Navy’s evolving strategic role. Today, Yorktown serves as a living memorial and educational platform, preserved as a museum ship at Patriots Point in Charleston, South Carolina, where it continues to enlighten and inspire. This Naval History Special Edition traces Yorktown’s full arc—from frontline combat and Cold War transformation to museum ship and symbol of resilience. More than a relic, the ship exemplifies how naval institutions adapt to shifting geopolitical realities and preserve memory, making USS Yorktown a compelling study in American maritime history and strategy.

Building on the expertise of the authors and historians of the Naval Institute Press, the Naval History Special Editions are designed to offer studies of the key vessels, battles, and events of armed conflict.

In 1942, half the aircraft spotted on an American carrier were SBD Dauntless dive bombers.
