The series consists of a text without commentary but with a brief apparatus criticus at the front of each page. There are now over 100 volumes, representing the greater part of classical Greek and Latin literature. The aim of the series remains that of including the works of all the principal classical authors. Although this has been largely accomplished, new volumes are still being published to fill the reamining gaps, and old editions are being revised in the light of recent research or Based on a thorough reconsideration of the manuscripts, of the indirect tradition, and of both the Latin and the Greek text, this new edition utilizes manuscript evidence unknown to previous editors, refines the standard account of relations between the earlier manuscripts, and distinguishes between readings in the later manuscripts derived from an older lost witness and those resulting from error or interpolation. His account of his fictionalized affair with his beloved alter ego Cynthia is the purest expression of the spirit of love elegy, setting them as a pair against war, epic and (apparently) Augustus himself. The treatment of their love is tender and at times delightfully macabre, in pursuing their love beyond the grave. This is a text read by virtually all students of Classical Latin, and it is now available in a radical new edition, more readable and based on the latest research into the manuscript tradition. This is fully explained in the English preface, which also contains important comments on the way texts are edited and read. Some significant emendations discovered in the papers of A. E. Housman are published here for the first time.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":49728609059089,"sku":"NGR9780198146742","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":50999915315473,"sku":"NIN9780198146742","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":51463096369425,"sku":"GOR009920263","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0198146744.jpg?v=1786614539"},{"product_id":"apuleius-philosophical-works-apulei-opera-philosophica-book-giuseppina-magnaldi-9780198841418","title":"Apuleius: Philosophical Works (Apulei Opera Philosophica)","description":"This new critical edition aims to provide a new standard text of Apuleius' De Deo Socratis, De Platone et eius dogmate, and De mundo, allowing readers to get closer than ever before to the philosophical writings of the renowned orator, extraordinary prose stylist, and Platonist philosopher. Knowledge of these three works is crucial to understanding the reinterpretation and transmission of Greek philosophical thought in the Latin world: based on a new collation of the ancient manuscripts and scrupulous investigation of all previous editions, the Latin text presented here relies on a safer ms. basis than its predecessors. The enforcement of the criterion of the so-called 'signal-word' in particular has enabled improved solutions for many textual problems to be found, some older emendations to be confirmed, and previously unnoticed corruptions to be located and cogently healed, while the rich and detailed apparatus criticus selectively focuses on only plausible conjectures in doubtful passages. A fluent Latin praefatio offers a neat explanation of the principles which have been adopted throughout the edition, while also ably balancing comprehensive coverage of the main manuscript sources, their histories, and their relationships with lucidity and concision, despite the intricacy of the textual tradition.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":49730463727889,"sku":"NGR9780198841418","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":51000057397521,"sku":"NIN9780198841418","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0198841418.jpg?v=1787050259"},{"product_id":"herodotus-histories-books-5-9-herodoti-historiae-libri-v-ix-book-n-g-wilson-lincoln-college-uni-9780199560714","title":"Herodotus: Histories, Books 5-9 (Herodoti Historiae: Libri V-IX)","description":"In this new edition of Herodotus' Histories, Nigel Wilson has revised the original Oxford Classical Text by the Danish scholar C. Hude, published in 1906 and last revised in 1927. As well as incorporating much of the valuable work on the text that has been conducted since the original edition, in particular that of J. Each work in the edition is provided with a critical apparatus that is both informative and economical. The apparatus fontium et testium standing between the text and the critical apparatus on each page provides full references to the texts Seneca himself cites and extensive cross-references among the three works in the edition and between those works and Seneca's other prose writings, along with many parallel passages beyond the Senecan corpus. The work has now emerged from its relative obscurity; many scholars, indeed, now claim - on the basis of what appear to be sound statistical arguments - that it is the Nicomachean Ethics that has to borrow its Books V-VII from the Eudemian. This critical edition of Aristotle's Eudemian Ethics treats this particular issue as unresolved, including as it does only five books (I-III, VII-VIII), but without prejudice, the three disputed books being treated as already available in the edition of the Nicomachean Ethics in the same series. The new edition of the Eudemian Ethics completes the task, begun by Walzer and Mingay's 1991 Oxford Classical Text edition, of restoring the corrupted text on the basis of a new understanding of the relationships between the extant Greek manuscripts. The three primary manuscripts identified by Harlfinger, along with a fourth identified by the present editor, Christopher Rowe, have been freshly and fully collated, a more extensive apparatus criticus has been provided, and substantial new progress has been made in the restoration of the text. A separate companion volume (Aristotelica: Studies on the text of Aristotle's Eudemian Ethics) contains the arguments for every important editorial choice made in the restoration of the text.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":49969599611153,"sku":"NGR9780198838326","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":51000017060113,"sku":"NIN9780198838326","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0198838328.jpg?v=1786442777"},{"product_id":"cicero-orationes-vol-vi-book-a-c-clark-9780198146100","title":"Cicero Orationes. Vol. III","description":"Orations were speeches given in 63 BC by Marcus Tullius Cicero, the consul of Rome to expose to the Roman Senate the plot to overthrow the Roman government, purportedly led by Lucius Sergius Catilina (Catiline) and his allies. There is scholarly debate about the trustworthiness of Cicero's speeches, including questions as to how factually true they are, with some ancient historians such as Sallust hinting that Catiline is a more complex and sympathetic character than Cicero's writings suggest. These accounts took place almost a hundred years or more after the orations, but portray Catiline in a more sympathetic light, even going so far as to excuse him of any involvement at all, leading to questions of whether the Catilinarians were political propaganda designed to solidify Cicero's position in the political sphere rather than a factual account of the events of 63. However, most accounts of the events come from Cicero's pen himself. This is one of, if not the most, well documented events taking place in the ancient world, and has set the stage for classic political struggles pitting homeland security against civil liberties. As political orations go, it was relatively short, some 3,400 words, and to the point. The opening remarks are still widely remembered and used after 2000 years: Quo usque tandem abutere, Catilina, patientia nostra? Quam diu etiam furor iste tuus nos eludet? Quem ad finem sese effrenata iactabit audacia? When, O Catiline, do you mean to cease abusing our patience? How long is that madness of yours still to mock us? When is there to be an end of that unbridled audacity of yours, swaggering about as it does now? Also remembered is the famous exasperated exclamation, O tempora, o mores (Oh the times Oh the customs ). Catiline was present when the speech was delivered. He replied to it by asking people not to trust Cicero because he is Homo Novus and to trust Catiline because of the history of his family. People in Senate didn't believe Cicero in the first place. Catiline then ran from the temple, hurling threats at the Senate. Later he left the city and claimed that he was placing himself in self-imposed exile at Marseilles, but really went to the camp of Manlius, who was in charge of the army of rebels. The next morning Cicero assembled the people, and gave a further oration.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":50044824224017,"sku":"GOR013843979","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0198146078.jpg?v=1786614502"},{"product_id":"herodotus-histories-books-1-4-herodoti-historiae-libri-i-iv-book-n-g-wilson-lincoln-college-uni-9780199560707","title":"Herodotus: Histories, Books 1-4 (Herodoti Historiae: Libri I-IV)","description":"In this new edition of Herodotus' Histories, Nigel Wilson has revised the original Oxford Classical Text by the Danish scholar C. A number of other conjectures are correctly attributed for the first time, and in a few passages the editors have ventured to offer proposals of their own.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":50144197378321,"sku":"NGR9780198145776","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":50234152976657,"sku":"CIN0198145772G","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":50989100695825,"sku":"GOR002700307","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":51136057082129,"sku":"NIN9780198145776","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0198145772.jpg?v=1786102745"},{"product_id":"herodotus-historiae-book-herodotus-9780198145264","title":"Herodotus Historiae","description":"Herodotus Historiae Vol. I: Books I-IV","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":50190252671249,"sku":"GOR005562948","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":53489631265041,"sku":"GOR003584564","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ WELL_READ \/ SBYB","offer_id":54099895812369,"sku":"CIN0198145268A","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0198145268.jpg?v=1751425264"},{"product_id":"pliny-the-younger-epistularum-libri-decem-book-sir-roger-mynors-9780198146438","title":"Pliny the Younger Epistularum Libri Decem","description":"Pliny the Younger Epistularum Libri Decem","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":50206714626321,"sku":"GOR001970929","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":50320993550609,"sku":"CIN0198146434G","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":53192010334481,"sku":"GOR009241724","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0198146434.jpg?v=1751132925"},{"product_id":"proclus-commentary-on-timaeus-book-2-procli-diadochi-in-platonis-timaeum-comment-book-gerd-van-riel-9780192856043","title":"Proclus: Commentary on Timaeus, Book 2 (Procli Diadochi, In Platonis Timaeum Commentaria Librum Primum)","description":"A new five volume critical text edition of the only surviving ancient commentary on Plato's Timaeus, in which Proclus encompasses seven centuries of philosophical reflection on Plato's cosmology. In Proclus' Commentary, the Parmenides provides the argumentative and conceptual framework for a scientific theology wherein all mythological discourse about the gods can be integrated. Its exposition was therefore the culmination of the curriculum of the Platonic school. This theological reading of the Parmenides persisted, through the medium of Ficino, until the nineteenth century. Previously this important text was only accessible in the edition of V. Cousin (Paris, 1864). This new critical edition is based on an exhaustive study of both the Greek tradition and the medieval Latin translation. This volume, the third and final one, contains Books VI and VII, and a complete set of indexes.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"US \/ GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":50345651601681,"sku":"CIN0199291829G","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0199291829.jpg?v=1786528386"},{"product_id":"cicero-orationes-vol-iv-book-a-c-clark-9780198146087","title":"Cicero Orationes.
