It reveals that while Liverpool has historically been portrayed as a certain kind of ‘music city,’ metal has been marginalized within its music heritage narratives. This marginality was not inevitable. The book illustrates how it is not merely the product of historical representation but the result of forces of urban change and regional shifts in the economy of live music. Nor is this marginality inconsequential. Drawing on ethnographic research, Nedim Hassan demonstrates that it has influenced how the region’s metal scenes are perceived and how people feel towards them.     Metal on Merseyside reveals how various people involved with such scenes work within often challenging circumstances to sustain the production of metal music and events. It also reveals the tensions that arise as scenemembers’ desires for an ideal metal community collide with forces of change. Metal on Merseyside is, therefore, a fascinating barometer for the contradictions apparent when people engage in creative labour to produce music that they love.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":50464032850193,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":50464033505553,"sku":"NGR9783030776831","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52137921577233,"sku":"NLS9783030776831","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/3030776832.jpg?v=1751127008"},{"product_id":"youth-culture-and-social-change-book-keith-gildart-9781137529107","title":"Youth Culture and Social Change","description":"This book brings together historians, sociologists and social scientists to examine aspects of youth culture. National Myth and the First World War in Modern Popular Music takes an inter-disciplinary approach that locates popular music within the framework of ‘memory studies’ and analyses how songwriters are influenced by their country’s ‘national myths’. How does popular music help form memory and remembrance of such an event? Why do some songwriters stick rigidly to culturally dominant forms of memory whereas others seek an oppositional or transnational perspective? The huge range of musical examples include the great chansonniers Jacques Brel and Georges Brassens; folk maestros including Al Stewart and Eric Bogle; the socially aware rock of The Kinks and Pink Floyd; metal legends Iron Maiden and Bolt Thrower and female iconoclasts Diamanda Galás and PJ Harvey.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":50875161018641,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":50875161510161,"sku":"GOR010513903","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52133404016913,"sku":"NLS9781137601384","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1137601388.jpg?v=1750919964"},{"product_id":"post-punk-politics-and-pleasure-in-britain-book-david-wilkinson-9781349698073","title":"Post-Punk, Politics and Pleasure in Britain","description":"As the  Sex Pistols were breaking up, Britain was entering a new era. Punk’s filth and  fury had burned brightly and briefly; soon a new underground offered a more  sustained and constructive challenge. As future-focused, independently  released singles appeared in the wake of the Sex Pistols, there were high  hopes in magazines like NME and the  DIY fanzine media spawned by punk. Post-Punk,  Politics and Pleasure in Britain explores how post-punk’s politics  developed into the 1980s. Illustrating that the movement’s monochrome gloom  was illuminated by residual flickers of countercultural utopianism, it  situates post-punk in the ideological crossfire of a key political struggle of  the era: a battle over pleasure and freedom between emerging Thatcherism and  libertarian, feminist and countercultural movements dating back to the  post-war New Left. Case studies on bands including Gang of Four, The Fall and  the Slits and labels like Rough Trade move sensitively between close reading,  historical context and analysis of who made post-punk and how it was produced  and mediated. The book examines, too, how the struggles of post-punk resonate  down to the present.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":51023401812241,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":51023403516177,"sku":"NIN9781349698073","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52654979711249,"sku":"NLS9781349698073","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":53262158692625,"sku":"GOR013067174","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1349698075.jpg?v=1751082882"},{"product_id":"music-youth-and-international-links-in-post-war-british-fascism-book-ryan-shaffer-9783319866758","title":"Music, Youth and International Links in Post-War British Fascism","description":"This book examines the domestic evolution and international connections of post-war fascists in the UK. It argues that post-war British fascism became transnational as the radicals increasingly exchanged ideas, money and culture with like-minded foreigners. Using interviews with key figures in several countries, this book traces the history of the National Front (NF) and British National Party (BNP), focusing on the political parties’ youth, music and international outreach. It explores how British fascism grew into an international movement, how fascist youth developed skinhead music as a conduit for their ideas, and how some of those key figures made international connections with people in Iraq, Libya, Syria and the United States. Moreover, it also draws from rare internal party documents, law enforcement records and membership lists to track foreign funding and the parties’ domestic electoral growth. For the first time, this book gained access to both the leadership and rank-and-file of the BNP and NF to explore its culture and international connections. In doing so, it shows the successes, failures and changes that have made British fascism a force in the international extremist subculture.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":51061603631377,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":51061606416657,"sku":"NIN9783319866758","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52650907042065,"sku":"NLS9783319866758","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/3319866753.jpg?v=1750729340"},{"product_id":"punk-fanzines-and-diy-cultures-in-a-global-world-book-paula-guerra-9783030288754","title":"Punk, Fanzines and DIY Cultures in a Global World","description":"Since the 1970 and 1980s, fanzines have constituted a zone of freedom of thought, of do-it-yourself creativity and of alternatives to conventional media. Each section of the book – Society, City, Pop, and Space – considers in detail the ways in which working-class youth culture corresponded with a fast-changing metropolitan and urban society in the years following the decline of the British Empire.     Was teenage culture rooted in the urban experience and the transformation of working-class neighbourhoods? Did youth subcultures emerge simply as a reaction to Britain's changing racial demographic? To what extent did leisure venues and institutions function as laboratories for a developing British pop culture, which ultimately helped Britain re-establish its prominence on the world stage?     These questions and more are answered in this book.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":51064735269137,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":51064737628433,"sku":"NIN9783030689704","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52522573562129,"sku":"NLS9783030689704","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/3030689700.jpg?v=1751415182"},{"product_id":"punk-ageing-and-time-book-laura-way-9783031478222","title":"Punk, Ageing and Time","description":"To date there has been no plotting of punk scholarship which speaks to ‘time’, yet there are some clear bodies of work pertaining to particular issues relevant to it, including ageing and\/or the life course and punk, memory and\/or nostalgia and punk, ‘punk history’, and archiving and punk. It charts the translation of disco as a cultural form into musical, geo-political, ideological and sociological landscapes that fall outside of its original conditions of production and reception, capturing the variety of scenes, contexts and reasons for which disco took on diverse dimensions in its global journey. With its deep repercussions in visual culture, gender politics, and successive forms of popular music, art, fashion and style, disco as a musical genre and dance culture is exemplary of how a subversive, marginal scene - that of queer and Black New York undergrounds in the early 1970s - turned into a mainstream cultural industry. As it exploded, atomised and travelled, disco served a number of different agendas; its aesthetic rootedness in ideas of pleasure, transgression and escapism and its formal malleability, constructed around a four-on-the-floor beat, allowed it to permeate a variety of local scenes for whom the meaning of disco shifted, sometimes in unexpected and radical ways.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":51389255024913,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":51389255352593,"sku":"NGR9783030919948","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52404753858833,"sku":"NLS9783030919948","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52760471208209,"sku":"NIN9783030919948","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/3030919943.jpg?v=1750933948"},{"product_id":"underground-music-cultures-and-music-making-in-los-angeles-book-john-willsteed-9783031754982","title":"Underground Music Cultures and Music-Making in Los Angeles","description":"This book focuses on the relationships between underground urban music cultures in Los Angeles and specific urban imaginaries related to music practices, far away and sometimes in stark opposition to the commodified image of the city crafted by urban planners and associated urban stakeholders. As basslines from Jamaica reverberated across the Atlantic, so they were received and transmitted by the UK's Afro-Caribbean community. From roots to lovers' rock, from deejays harnessing the dancehall crowd to dub poets reporting back from the socio-economic front line, British reggae soundtracked the inner-city experience of black youth. In time, reggae's influence permeated the wider culture, informing the sounds and the language of popular music whilst also retaining a connection to the street-level sound systems, clubs and centres that provided space to create, protest and innovate. This book is therefore a testament to struggle and ingenuity, a collection of essays tracing reggae's importance to both the culture and the politics of late twentieth and early twenty-first century Britain.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52147132236049,"sku":"NLS9783030551605","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52760414224657,"sku":"NIN9783030551605","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9783030551605.jpg?v=1757599523"},{"product_id":"punk-ageing-and-time-book-laura-way-9783031478253","title":"Punk, Ageing and Time","description":"To date there has been no plotting of punk scholarship which speaks to ‘time’, yet there are some clear bodies of work pertaining to particular issues relevant to it, including ageing and\/or the life course and punk, memory and\/or nostalgia and punk, ‘punk history’, and archiving and punk. Combining a wide range of archival research and theory, the book evocatively demonstrates how the scene evolved in Soho’s clubs, the fashion that formed around the music, drug usage amongst a contingent of the group, and the moral panic which led to the police raids on the clubs between 1947 and 1950. Thereafter it maps the changes in popular culture in Soho during the 1950s, and argues that the bebop story is an important precedent to the institutional harassment of black-related spaces and culture that continued in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. This book therefore rewrites the first chapter of the ‘classic’ subcultural canon, and resets the subcultural clock; requiring us to rethink the periodization and social make-up of British post-war youth subcultures.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":52331731550481,"sku":null,"price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52331732238609,"sku":"NLS9783031055577","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9783031055577.jpg?v=1758149265"},{"product_id":"spectacle-fashion-and-the-dancing-experience-in-britain-1960-1990-book-jon-stratton-9783031090141","title":"Spectacle, Fashion and the Dancing Experience in Britain, 1960-1990","description":"This book explores dancing from the 1960s to the 1980s; though this period covers only twenty years, the changes during it were seismic. In dancing, it answers how we moved from the self-control that formed the basis for ballroom dancing, to ecstatic rave dancing. In terms of music, it answers how we moved from the beat groups to electronic dance music. In terms of youth, it answers how we moved from youth culture to club culture.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":52351189287185,"sku":null,"price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52351190434065,"sku":"NLS9783031090141","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9783031090141.jpg?v=1758180829"},{"product_id":"youth-subcultures-in-fiction-film-and-other-media-book-nick-bentley-9783319731889","title":"Youth Subcultures in Fiction, Film and Other Media","description":"This collection explores the representation, articulation and construction of youth subcultures in a range of texts and contexts. It questions the artificial boundaries of subcultural research, calling for a critical analysis of the distinctions drawn between subcultural and everyday lives, and between localised and globalised subcultures. The everyday experiences of punk are framed within the mobile and connected global subculture of which they are a part. It traces its emergence in the 1970s and its development through to 2010, with chapters that map Dutch punk historically and spatially. Further chapters explore the meanings and practices attached to punk by its participants before focusing in particular on the political affiliations of punks. It argues that post-war British fascism became transnational as the radicals increasingly exchanged ideas, money and culture with like-minded foreigners. Drawing from interviews with key figures in several countries, it traces the history of the National Front and British National Party by focusing on the political parties' youth, music and international outreach. It explores how post-war British fascism grew into an international movement, how fascist youth developed skinhead music as a conduit for their ideas, and how some of those same key figures made international connections with people in countries, such as Iraq, Libya, Syria and the United States. Moreover, it also draws from rare internal party documents, law enforcement records and membership lists to track foreign funding and the parties' domestic electoral growth. For the first time, this book gained access to both the leadership and rank-and-file of the British National Party and National Front to explore its culture and international connections. In doing so, it shows the successes, failures and changes that have made British fascism a force in the international extremist subculture.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52532456751377,"sku":"NLS9783319596679","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9783319596679.jpg?v=1760661013"},{"product_id":"researching-subcultures-myth-and-memory-book-bart-van-der-steen-9783030419110","title":"Researching Subcultures, Myth and Memory","description":"This book brings together contributions that analyse how subcultural myths develop and how they can be studied. Based on an ethnography in the singular capital of Texas, the self-proclaimed live music capital of the world, it explores the local blues scene through in-depth interviews that reveal intimate bonds between popular music, culture, identity, race, politics, the city and the music industry. Through the voices and experiences of 15 protagonists, readers are introduced to multiple aspects of blues lives, including music-making, style, identity, and the changing landscape of the Austin scene. While this oral history informs about particular biographies, it also delves into larger processes around popular music, culture and race, such as Jim Crow segregation, the Civil Rights era, international touring and gentrification.    The book's subtitle assumes an important metaphor in regards to blues artists and the blues: that talking with blues artists is like talking with the blues; that meeting them is a way of meeting the blues. The implication is that blues artists not only form part of the tradition but they also embody the blues tradition with their lives and works, with their music, style, bodies, language, stories, and fashion. Thus, in this scene and book, the interviewees are the blues. Representatives of a contemporary music scene, these musicians and producers generally reveal an eclectic understanding of blues music, with connections to gospel, jazz, rhythm \u0026amp; blues, rock, soul-funk, and hip-hop. The conversations took place between 2010 and 2023, mostly face-to-face in Austin but also online and face-to-face in Madrid (Spain), where some of the musicians have performed. All of the protagonists were followed and observed closely within the everyday reality of the Austin music scene, yet the book also shows how the scene connects with many other places, including Mississippi, Houston, Memphis, New York or Madrid, through the biographies, tours and migrations of the protagonists.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52659571753233,"sku":"NLS9783031886560","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52761047793937,"sku":"NIN9783031886560","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9783031886560.jpg?v=1762263336"},{"product_id":"authenticity-and-belonging-in-the-northern-soul-scene-book-sarah-raine-9783030413637","title":"Authenticity and Belonging in the Northern Soul Scene","description":"This book, which builds on a three-year immersive ethnographic study, argues that what scene participants do and say within the northern soul scene constitutes a claim to belong. It charts the translation of disco as a cultural form into musical, geo-political, ideological and sociological landscapes that fall outside of its original conditions of production and reception, capturing the variety of scenes, contexts and reasons for which disco took on diverse dimensions in its global journey. With its deep repercussions in visual culture, gender politics, and successive forms of popular music, art, fashion and style, disco as a musical genre and dance culture is exemplary of how a subversive, marginal scene - that of queer and Black New York undergrounds in the early 1970s - turned into a mainstream cultural industry. As it exploded, atomised and travelled, disco served a number of different agendas; its aesthetic rootedness in ideas of pleasure, transgression and escapism and its formal malleability, constructed around a four-on-the-floor beat, allowed it to permeate a variety of local scenes for whom the meaning of disco shifted, sometimes in unexpected and radical ways.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52690213372177,"sku":"NLS9783030919979","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9783030919979.jpg?v=1762337171"},{"product_id":"italian-goth-subculture-book-simone-tosoni-9783030398101","title":"Italian Goth Subculture","description":"This book is the first in-depth investigation of the Goth subculture in Italy, focusing in particular on the city of Milan.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52691432374545,"sku":"NLS9783030398101","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9783030398101.jpg?v=1762339768"},{"product_id":"clubbing-culture-in-islington-1986-1995-book-ray-kinsella-9783031976841","title":"Clubbing Culture in Islington, 1986-1995","description":"This is the first book to map and celebrate the overlooked history of producers, promoters and DJs from Islington that contributed to the acid house and rave scene as it developed in derelict spaces in the borough in the late 1980s, and how this paved the way for the house and jungle scenes that dominated Islington clubs during the 1990s. Blending oral history interviews with contemporaneous reports in the style press, the music press, local and national newspapers, and archival documents stored at the Islington Local History Centre, this book sheds new light upon key clubs, the music, cultural identities, and fashions. The book presents unpublished eyewitness accounts by people from Islington’s council estates that contributed to these scenes to unravel the complex and hitherto poorly understood interrelationship between gang culture, subculture and localised club culture. It argues that the backlash to the perceived unsavoury nature of clubbers and promoters, combined with the onslaught of gentrification in the borough in the late 1990s, led to the venues being closed down, and to this vital moment in the history of UK popular culture being brought to an end.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":53344973357329,"sku":"NIN9783031976841","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9783031976841.jpg?v=1774517333"},{"product_id":"narratives-from-beyond-the-uk-reggae-bassline-book-william-lez-henry-9783030551636","title":"Narratives from Beyond the UK Reggae Bassline","description":"This book explores the history of reggae in modern Britain from the time it emerged as a cultural force in the 1970s. As basslines from Jamaica reverberated across the Atlantic, so they were received and transmitted by the UK's Afro-Caribbean community. From roots to lovers' rock, from deejays harnessing the dancehall crowd to dub poets reporting back from the socio-economic front line, British reggae soundtracked the inner-city experience of black youth. In time, reggae's influence permeated the wider culture, informing the sounds and the language of popular music whilst also retaining a connection to the street-level sound systems, clubs and centres that provided space to create, protest and innovate. This book is therefore a testament to struggle and ingenuity, a collection of essays tracing reggae's importance to both the culture and the politics of late twentieth and early twenty-first century Britain.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":53521965482257,"sku":"NLS9783030551636","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9783030551636.jpg?v=1778456364"}],"url":"https:\/\/www.worldofbooks.com\/en-gb\/collections\/palgrave-studies-in-the-history-of-subcultures-and-popular-music-book-series.oembed","provider":"World of Books ","version":"1.0","type":"link"}
