They spread over Europe and North Africa, absorbing military, political and social customs from the Romans into their own cultures. Malcolm Todd traces the development of the Goths, Vandals, Suebi, Franks, Alamanni, Burgundians Lombards and other tribes from late pre-history to the period of migration, and views their conquest of the Western Empire not as an abrupt transition but as part of a continuum. The author makes use of archaeological and literary sources to trace the ethnogenesis and early history of the Germanic people. This subject has been neglected by historians or, in the case of the Nazis, wilfully distorted.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49515339055377,"sku":"GOR007394954","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ VERY_GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":50338434187537,"sku":"CIN0631163972VG","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":50355452707089,"sku":"CIN0631163972G","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ WELL_READ \/ SBYB","offer_id":51325206626577,"sku":"CIN0631163972A","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0631163972.jpg?v=1750847849"},{"product_id":"basques-book-roger-collins-9780631175650","title":"The Basques","description":"This edition of Collin's history of the Basques includes a substantial new chapter on the recent history of the Basques. He places their struggle for indentity and self-determination within the context of the past 2000 years, and aims to show that to a large extent this has finally been achieved within the democratic Spain which has proceeded the death of Franco. Among all former pre-Indo-European peoples, the Basques alone have been able to resist cultural assimilation by their larger and more powerful neighbours and to retain a distinct language. Yet, the Basques have failed to develop any sense of political unity. Drawing upon a wide range of archaeological and historical evidence, this study, examines the origins of these people. The author focuses on the crucial period extending from the Roman Conquest of the Iberian peninisula to the late 12th century.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49559132111121,"sku":"GOR001955466","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":49726917050641,"sku":"CIN0631175652G","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ WELL_READ \/ SBYB","offer_id":49870220329233,"sku":"CIN0631175652A","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ VERY_GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":50660142514449,"sku":"CIN0631175652VG","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0631175652.jpg?v=1751008920"},{"product_id":"mongols-book-david-morgan-9780631175636","title":"The Mongols","description":"The Mongol Empire was the largest continuous land empire known to history, its violent creation the major political event of the thirteenth century world. David Morgan explains how the vast Mongolian Empire was organized and governed, examing the religious and policital character of the steppe nomadic society. He assesses the astonishing military career of Chingiz (Genghis) Khan, considers the nature of Mongol imperial government, and the effects of Mongol campaigns on the countries and peoples they conquered in china, Russia, Persia and Europe. Dr Morgan extends his narrative through the collapse of the empire and the formation of a People's Republic as a Russian satellite.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49581158531345,"sku":"GOR003330001","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":50468977574161,"sku":"CIN0631175636G","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ VERY_GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":50501089984785,"sku":"CIN0631175636VG","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ WELL_READ \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":50537997271313,"sku":"GOR006563924","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":53412127113489,"sku":"GOR003526709","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0631175636.jpg?v=1751444188"},{"product_id":"bretons-book-patrick-galliou-9780631164067","title":"The Bretons","description":"This is a history of one of the most distinctive regions of France and its people, from prehistoric times to the end of the independent Duchy in the 15th century. Patrick Galliou and Michael Jones draw upon a wide range of archaeological and literary material to explore the characteristics of a society which has combined peoples from two different linguistic and cultural traditions in a long-enduring political union. In the book's opening chapter Patrick Galliou describes early Armorica, the Gaulish name for Brittany, including its physical environment, the hunter-gatherer society of the paleolithic era, the farmers of the neolithic and the metal working communities of the Bronze Age. Both authors synthesize much recent research to examine such themes as trade, population and settlement, the economy, urbanization and transport, art and crafts and Breton religion, culture and political ideology. Michael Jones pays particular attention to the circumstances in which Brittany became a fully-fledged late medieval state whilst nominally remaining a part of the kingdom of France, and considers also the evolution of aristocratic power. He also focuses upon the external forces which shaped Breton society, notably the Carolingian, Anglo-Norman, Angevin and Capetian policies and such European religious movements as monastic reform. A concluding chapter reviews Breton history from the end of the Middle Ages to the present day.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49609952297233,"sku":"GOR005816180","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ WELL_READ \/ SBYB","offer_id":49777610162449,"sku":"CIN0631164065A","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ VERY_GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":49932403015953,"sku":"CIN0631164065VG","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":51532618334481,"sku":"GOR003772296","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":52309621473553,"sku":"CIN0631164065G","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ WELL_READ \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":53607500448017,"sku":"GOR012679339","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0631164065.jpg?v=1751104710"},{"product_id":"norsemen-in-the-viking-age-book-eric-christiansen-9780631216773","title":"The Norsemen in the Viking Age","description":"Provides an introduction to Norsemen in the period 750-1050. The result is a one-volume history of the English nation from its origins to the 1990s. The author shows how the English absorbed other elements into the Germanic origins of their language, thus creating an unusually flexible means of discourse. That the basic features of English society endured for more than a thousand years through vicissitudes that included a succession of foreign occupants of the royal power, an invasion, and two destructive civil wars, may be, the author argues, traced to two factors. The first was the early emergence of an institutional monarchy that created power, order and control. The second, made possible by the first, was a system of law that both preserved rights and liberties, and encouraged a respect for the autonomy of individual thought and action that was and remains the essential aspect of the English constitution. With the establishment of a world empire and industrialization, the English submerged into the larger nation identity called the British. The great transformations that took place in the 19th century effectively brought a close to the story of the English as a nation. At the end of the second millennium the life of this new entity is itself precarious, at once from the renewed nationalism of the Scottish and Welsh, and from the loss of sovereignty presaged by a united Europe. From these forces, the English identity may paradoxically reemerge.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49637847630097,"sku":"GOR002714561","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49653387854097,"sku":"GOR001941723","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ VERY_GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":50324714782993,"sku":"CIN0631176810VG","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":51423427723537,"sku":"CIN0631176810G","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0631176810.jpg?v=1750880987"},{"product_id":"early-germans-book-malcolm-todd-9780631199045","title":"The Early Germans","description":"For many centuries Germanic peoples occupied much of northern and central Europe. For many centuries they flourished exuberantly in central Italy, only to be completely absorbed into the growing Roman state. Their power, at its height, extended well beyond their borders: they were known and feared by Romans and Greeks alike. Their arresting visual culture was second to none in the peninsula, embracing complex funerary and domestic architecture, tomb-painting, narrative art, and jewelery of great luxury and refinement. Their cities grew to notable size and sophistication. But they wrote no connected account of themselves that survives, and so this book focuses on three types of evidence for reconstructing Roman society: the extremely rich archaeological data, the accounts of Greek and Roman writers, and the inscriptions on Etruscan monuments. Until recently there has been little effort to relate the Etruscans to ancient Mediterranean society as a whole or to the physical landscape that sustained them. This book attempts both. Included are some of the more recent findings from landscape archaeology, which help to explain in what kinds of settlement the Etruscans lived, how densely the land was peopled, and how the landscape was organized for agriculture. This approach is balanced by sections on material and visual culture, where the focus is on interpretation within the specific context and setting, and even here the landscape is never far from view. The landscape, ancient and modern, figures too in what is one of the book's unique features: a description of more than sixty sites and a listing of some thirty-five local museums in a format that is both analytical and practical.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"US \/ GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":50143759958289,"sku":"CIN0631177159G","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":51082564534545,"sku":"GOR002515333","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0631177159.jpg?v=1751392291"},{"product_id":"gypsies-book-angus-m-fraser-9780631159674","title":"The Gypsies","description":"Since their appearance in the Balkans over nine centuries ago, the Gypsies have doggedly refused to fall in with conventional settled life. When, in the fifteenth century, they knocked at the gates of western Europe in the guise of pilgrims, they aroused intense curiosity as well as suspicion, and theories proliferated about their provenance. They remain a people whose culture and customs are beset with misunderstanding. This book describes their history. The story opens with an investigation into Gypsy origins, using the evidence of language and culture to identify their Indian ancestry. The author then traces the Gypsy migration through the Middle East, Europe and the world. They became renowned for their metal-working, music, fortune-telling, healing and horse-dealing. But right from the start they outraged latent prejudices in the settled populations they moved among. Governments sought to bring them to heel and they were harassed, outlawed, hunted down and banished. In what is now Rumania they were enslaved from the fourteenth century until the mid-nineteenth century; in 1725 the Prussians made the Gypsies into legal vermin and decreed that they could be hanged without trial; in Spain, in 1749 all Gypsies were rounded up, to be set to forced labour; in Switzerland, from 1926 to 1973, a respectable children's charity practised institutionalized abduction. Persecution reached its apogee when the Nazis embarked on outright genocide: in this forgotten holocaust perhaps half a million Gypsies lost their lives. The ethnic tensions in today's Europe mean that the pattern of antagonism continues. And yet this is in many ways a story of achievement. For the Gypsies managed, with no literate tradition, no state and no national identity, to preserve a distinctive heritage over centuries of vicissitude. How and why they did so are the twin themes of this book.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"US \/ GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":50359496474897,"sku":"CIN0631159673G","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ VERY_GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":50959538815249,"sku":"CIN0631159673VG","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":51588976673041,"sku":"GOR002209498","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0631159673.jpg?v=1750699893"},{"product_id":"lombards-book-neil-christie-9780631182382","title":"The Lombards","description":"The Lombards, also known as the Longobards, were a Germanic tribe whose fabled origins lay in the barbarian realm of Scandinavia. After centuries of obscurity during the long period of Roman domination in Europe, the Lombards began a concerted migration south-eastwards, coming to prominence immediately after the fall of Rome. Pushing across the Danube to occupy Hungary, the tribe emerged as a powerful protagonist in the former heartland of the Empire in the early sixth century AD. The Lombards subsequently invaded Italy in AD 568-9, where they successfully countered the Byzantines and established a kingdom based on the fertile north Italian plains. This endured for more than two centuries before its conquest by Charlemagne, and even after this defeat, a Lombard state continued to exist in southern Italy until the eleventh century. In this book, the author combines many sources, archaeological and historical, to offer a fresh and vividly detailed picture of Lombard society - its people, settlements, material and spiritual culture - and its evolution from martial 'barbarian' tribe to complex urbanized state.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"US \/ GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":50416774742289,"sku":"CIN0631182381G","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":51311856320785,"sku":"GOR006956015","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0631182381.jpg?v=1750816261"},{"product_id":"huns-book-ea-thompson-9780631158998","title":"The Huns","description":"This is a history of the Huns in Europe from their first attacks on the Goths north of the Black Sea to the collapse of their central European empire after the death of the legendary Attila. In the process, there emerges a clear picture of their dramatic successes, and failures, against the non-Roman peoples of central and eastern Europe, and of their many invasions of the eastern and western halves of the Roman Empire. This dramatic narrative is punctuated by analytical chapters which chart the transformations wrought in Hunnic society by contact with the more developed world of the Roman Mediterranean. In these chapters, the author sets himself the task of explaining the sudden rise and equally sudden fall of the Huns in the fourth and fifth centuries. Situated on the south-east coast of the Black Sea, Armenia has been a pivotal point between the forces of the east and of the west over most of its long history. That history has thus been very largely one of conquest by rival empires. In the classical period Armenia was conquered successively by the Persians, Seleucids and the Greeks (under Alexander). The flourishing of an independent and powerful Armenian society in the last three centuries before Christ was dissipated by successive invasions of Romans, Parthians and Persians. The conversion of Armenia to Christianity in AD 301 was the prelude to conquests first by Byzantium and then by the Arabs. The dissipation of Armenian culture continued through many centuries of subjugation under the Ottoman Empire and more recently as part of the Soviet Empire. Perhaps not surprisingly emigration from their troubled homeland has been a popular option among Armenians for at least the last 1,500 years. Armenian culture, as the author shows, has survived in enclaves throughout Europe, the Middle East and the United States. The book closes with a consideration of Armenia's first experience of independence after a gap of 1000 years. Redgate's vivid, analytical narrative is illustrated with numerous photographs and maps.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"US \/ VERY_GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":51327912116497,"sku":"CIN0631143726VG","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":53136860250385,"sku":"CIN0631143726G","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0631143726.jpg?v=1750816239"},{"product_id":"illyrians-book-jj-wilkes-9780631146711","title":"The Illyrians","description":"For more than a thousand years before the arrival of the Slavs in the sixth century AD, the lands between the Adriatic and the river Danube, now Yugoslavia and Albania, were the home of the peoples known to the ancient world as Illyrians. A chapter examines the Illyrian language, of which little trace survives, and its connection with other Indo-European languages.
