This informative and accessible book explores how US wage regulations in the twentieth century took gender, race-ethnicity and class into account. Focusing on social reform movements for living wages and equal wages, it offers an interdisciplinary account of how women's work and the remuneration for that work has changed along with the massive transformations in the economy and family structures. The controversial issue of establishing living wages for all workers makes this book both a timely and indispensable contribution to this wide ranging debate, and it will surely become required reading for anyone with an interest in modern economic issues.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49632656261393,"sku":"GOR012663207","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0415273919.jpg?v=1751429767"},{"product_id":"women-and-austerity-book-maria-karamessini-9780415815376","title":"Women and Austerity","description":"Austerity has become the new principle for public policy in Europe and the US as the financial crisis of 2008 has been converted into a public debt crisis. However, current austerity measures risk losing past progress towards gender equality by undermining important employment and social welfare protections and putting gender equality policy onto the back burner. This volume constitutes the first attempt to identify how the economic crisis and the subsequent austerity policies are affecting women in Europe and the US, tracing the consequences for gender equality in employment and welfare systems in nine case studies from countries facing the most severe adjustment problems.  The contributions adopt a common framework to analyse women in recession, which takes into account changes in women’s position and current austerity conditions. The findings demonstrate that in the immediate aftermath of the financial crisis, employment gaps between women and men declined — but due only to a deterioration in men’s employment position rather than any improvements for women. Tables are set to be turned by the austerity policies which are already having a more negative impact on demand for female labour and on access to services which support working mothers. Women are nevertheless reinforcing their commitment to paid work, even at this time of increasing demands on their unpaid domestic labour.  Future prospects are bleak. Current policy is reinforcing the same failed mechanisms that caused the crisis in the first place and is stalling or even reversing the long term growth in social investment in support for care. This book makes the case for gender equality to be placed at the centre of any progressive plan for a route out of the crisis.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49641567125777,"sku":"GOR009070700","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52522248241425,"sku":"NLS9780415815376","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0415815371.jpg?v=1751039348"},{"product_id":"feminist-economics-and-public-policy-book-jim-campbell-9781138950863","title":"Feminist Economics and Public Policy","description":"Professor Ailsa McKay, who was known not only for her work as a feminist economist but also her influence on Scottish social and economic policy, died in 2014 at the height of her academic career and impact on public life. Organised around the key themes of Ailsa McKay’s work, this collection brings together eminent contributors to argue for the importance of making women's roles and needs more visible in economic and social policies.   Feminist Economics and Public Policy presents a uniquely coherent analysis of key issues including gender mainstreaming, universal childcare provision and universal basic income security, in the context of today’s challenging economic and political environments. It draws on international perspectives to look at the economic role of women, presenting readers with interrelated sections on gender budgeting and work and childcare, before concluding with a discussion on Citizens Basic Income and how it could contribute towards a more efficient, equitable social security system. The theoretical, empirical and practice based contributions assembled here present recommendations for more effective public policy, working towards a world in which women’s diverse roles are recognized and fully accounted for.   This book is a unique collection, which will be of great relevance to those studying gender and economics, as well as to researchers or policy makers.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":50167416357137,"sku":"GOR013878469","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1138950866.jpg?v=1750791039"},{"product_id":"women-s-economic-thought-in-the-romantic-age-book-joanna-rostek-9780367074272","title":"Women's Economic Thought in the Romantic Age","description":"This book examines the writings of seven English women economists from the period 1735-1811. Beyond the superficial macroeconomics of high growth rates, increasing GDP per capita and high trade volume, the book looks at what is happening to the very socioeconomic and political fabric of society; particularly in terms of the transformation of gender relations. Chen’s study explores:         how the gender impacts of government policies shape the unequal realities of women,       how women have carried on in production and social reproduction and made efforts to improve their status, and       how women could potentially adopt a strategy to overcome the gender impacts so as to attain the equality and justice they have been promised by the Chinese government in a harmonious \"well off\" society. On finishing school more girls are entering universities and undertaking professional training for careers than ever before. Males and females enter many high status professions in roughly equal numbers. However, engineering stands out as a profession that remains obstinately male dominated. Despite efforts to change, little progress has been made in attracting and retaining women in engineering.  This book analyses the outcomes of a decade-long investigation into this phenomenon, framed by two questions: Why are there so few women in engineering? And why is this so difficult to change? The study includes data from two major surveys, accounts from female engineers in a range of locations and engineering fields, and case studies of three large engineering corporations. The authors explore the history and politics of several organisations related to women in engineering, and conclude with an analysis of a range of campaigns that have been waged to address the issue of women’s minority status in engineering.  Challenging Knowledge, Sex and Power will be of great interest to students of feminist economics, and is also relevant to researchers in women’s studies and engineering education.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":51162051870993,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":51162059800849,"sku":"NIN9780415676861","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52522090561809,"sku":"NLS9780415676861","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/041567686X.jpg?v=1751166108"},{"product_id":"feminist-economics-and-functional-finance-book-zdravka-todorova-9780415594295","title":"Feminist Economics and Functional Finance","description":"This path breaking new book builds on theories of social provisioning and functional finance to provide a new framework for feminist economics, while at the same time providing a brand new gender analysis of central current economic issues and policies, focusing on the USA, but also considering the global economy and the ongoing financial crisis. It investigates how the reforms enacted earlier in the United States, England and continental Europe and national antecedents and conditions informed the ideas of feminists, jurists and politicians and shows how their interaction influenced the content of the reforms attained. It highlights the role of feminists and their organizations in achieving stronger property rights, emphasizing their proposals to reform the civil code. The book argues that while most feminists framed their arguments in maternalist terms – that they needed stronger rights to be better wives and mothers – their proposals to reform the marital regime fell along a continuum that ranged from accepting the husband as sole household head to gender equality in marriage. Since the long-run goal was to attain equal civil and political rights, the book also demonstrates how these two demands for stronger property rights and suffrage influenced their strategies and what feminists were able to achieve.  This book contributes to a long-standing discussion on the relationship between socioeconomic and legal change and brings the findings of recent scholarship and a vast array of primary materials only available in Spanish to an English-speaking audience, interpreting legal concepts and debates in a manner accessible to social scientists. Written from an interdisciplinary perspective, it supports the construction of a feminist legal history of marital regimes. They have also been, until now, under-researched and under-estimated.  This book brings together the research of leading feminist economists in the area of gender and austerity economics to perform a rigorous gender-impact analysis both at national and pan-European levels. The chapters not only offer thorough evidence for the detrimental gender-impact of austerity policies across Europe, but they also provide readers with concrete suggestions of alternative policies that national governments and the European Union should adopt. With a combination of country case studies and cross-country empirical analysis, this book reveals the scope and channels through which women and men have been impacted by austerity policies in Europe, and goes on to offer readers the opportunity to assess the feasibility and implications of a feminist alternative to continued austerity.   This book will be invaluable to social science students and researchers, as well to as policy-makers searching not just for a Plan B to continued austerity policies but for a Plan F – a feminist economic strategy to stimulate sustainable economic recovery.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52402637963537,"sku":"NLS9781138646070","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":53014333489425,"sku":"NIN9781138646070","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9781138646070.jpg?v=1758758331"},{"product_id":"sexual-orientation-discrimination-book-lee-badgett-9780415770248","title":"Sexual Orientation Discrimination","description":"Having recently authored one of the most significant books, Money, Myths and Change, in this exciting area of economics, Lee Badgett has now teamed up with Jeff Frank and a collection of international contributors to provide an analysis of sexual orientation discrimination on an international scale. Recently, economists have also engaged in the search for gender differences, with a number claiming to find fundamental gender differences regarding risk-taking, altruism, and competition. In particular, the idea that \"women are more risk-averse than men\" has become accepted as a truism. But is it true? And what are its causes and consequences?  Gender and Risk Taking makes three contributions. First, it asks whether the belief that men and women have distinct risk preferences is backed up by high quality empirical evidence. The answer turns out to be \"no.\" This leads to a second question: Why, then, does so much of the literature claim to find evidence of \"difference\"? This, it will be shown, can be attributed to biases arising from too-easy categorical thinking, widespread stereotyping, and a tendency to prefer results that are publishable and that fit one’s prior beliefs. Third, the book explores the economic implications of the conventional association of risk-taking with masculinity and risk-aversion with femininity. Not only fairness in employment, but also the health of the financial sector and national responses to climate change, this book argues, are being compromised.  This volume will be eye-opening for anyone interested in gender, decision-making, cognition, and\/or risk, especially in areas relating to employment, finance, management, or public policy.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52454583370001,"sku":"NLS9781138284036","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":53558389866769,"sku":"NIN9781138284036","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9781138284036.jpg?v=1759371604"},{"product_id":"gender-and-the-contours-of-precarious-employment-book-leah-f-vosko-9780415494540","title":"Gender and the Contours of Precarious Employment","description":"Precarious employment presents a challenge to the social, economic, and political stability of labour markets in industrialized societies and there is widespread consensus that its growth is contributing to a series of common social inequalities. Organised around the key themes of Ailsa McKay’s work, this collection brings together eminent contributors to argue for the importance of making women's roles and needs more visible in economic and social policies.   Feminist Economics and Public Policy presents a uniquely coherent analysis of key issues including gender mainstreaming, universal childcare provision and universal basic income security, in the context of today’s challenging economic and political environments. It draws on international perspectives to look at the economic role of women, presenting readers with interrelated sections on gender budgeting and work and childcare, before concluding with a discussion on Citizens Basic Income and how it could contribute towards a more efficient, equitable social security system. The theoretical, empirical and practice based contributions assembled here present recommendations for more effective public policy, working towards a world in which women’s diverse roles are recognized and fully accounted for.   This book is a unique collection, which will be of great relevance to those studying gender and economics, as well as to researchers or policy makers.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":52483431727377,"sku":null,"price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52483433398545,"sku":"NLS9781138950856","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9781138950856.jpg?v=1759854717"},{"product_id":"gender-and-chinese-development-book-lanyan-chen-9780415467230","title":"Gender and Chinese Development","description":"Explores: how the gender impacts of government policies shape the unequal realities of women, how women have carried on in production and social reproduction and made efforts to improve their status, and how women could adopt a strategy to overcome the gender impacts so as to attain the equality and justice, promised by the Chinese government.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":52487378993425,"sku":null,"price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52487379779857,"sku":"NLS9780415467230","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9780415467230.jpg?v=1759860736"},{"product_id":"family-time-book-michael-bittman-9780415310093","title":"Family Time","description":"In this volume, leading internatinal experts in the analysis of time use explore the interface between time use and family policy. Gender and Risk Taking makes three contributions. First, it asks whether the belief that men and women have distinct risk preferences is backed up by high quality empirical evidence. The answer turns out to be \"no.\" This leads to a second question: Why, then, does so much of the literature claim to find evidence of \"difference\"? This, it will be shown, can be attributed to biases arising from too-easy categorical thinking, widespread stereotyping, and a tendency to prefer results that are publishable and that fit one’s prior beliefs. Third, the book explores the economic implications of the conventional association of risk-taking with masculinity and risk-aversion with femininity. Not only fairness in employment, but also the health of the financial sector and national responses to climate change, this book argues, are being compromised.  This volume will be eye-opening for anyone interested in gender, decision-making, cognition, and\/or risk, especially in areas relating to employment, finance, management, or public policy.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52613747573009,"sku":"NLS9781138284012","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":53656726405393,"sku":"NIN9781138284012","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9781138284012.jpg?v=1761519259"}],"url":"https:\/\/www.worldofbooks.com\/en-gb\/collections\/routledge-iaffe-advances-in-feminist-economics-book-series.oembed","provider":"World of Books ","version":"1.0","type":"link"}
