Both in popular imagination and, to some degree, scholarly literature, East-Central Europe is persistently imagined as a hermetically isolated cultural landscape. This book restores the diverse ways in which East-Central European art has always been entangled with actors and institutions in the wider world. The contributors engage with empirically anchored and theoretically argued case studies from historical periods representing notable junctures of globalization: the early modern period, the age of Empires, the time of socialist rule and the global Cold War, and the most recent decades of postsocialism understood as a global condition.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49613793984785,"sku":"GOR013557680","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0367516136.jpg?v=1750942256"},{"product_id":"posthumous-art-law-and-the-art-market-book-sharon-hecker-9781032028989","title":"Posthumous Art, Law and the Art Market","description":"This book takes an interdisciplinary, transnational and cross-cultural approach to reflect on, critically examine and challenge the surprisingly robust practice of making art after death in an artist's name, through the lenses of scholars from the fields of art history, economics and law, as well as practicing artists. Works of art conceived as multiples, such as sculptures, etchings, prints, photographs and conceptual art, can be—and often are—remade from original models and plans long after the artist has passed. Recent sales have suggested a growing market embrace of posthumous works, contemporaneous with questioning on the part of art history. Legal norms seem unready for this surge in posthumous production and are beset by conflict across jurisdictions. Non-Western approaches to posthumous art, from Chinese emulations of non-living artists to Native American performances, take into account rituals of generational passage at odds with contemporary, market-driven approaches. The book will be of interest to scholars working in art history, the art market, art law, art management, museum studies and economics.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ LIKE_NEW \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49669167939857,"sku":"GOR013768106","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/103202898X.jpg?v=1750790478"},{"product_id":"loss-in-french-romantic-art-literature-and-politics-book-jonathan-p-ribner-9781032027043","title":"Loss in French Romantic Art, Literature, and Politics","description":"An interdisciplinary examination of nineteenth-century French art pertaining to religion, exile, and the nation’s demise as a world power, this study concerns the consequences for visual culture of a series of national crises—from the assault on Catholicism and the flight of émigrés during the Revolution of 1789, to the collapse of the Empire and the dashing of hope raised by the Revolution of 1830. The central claim is that imaginative response to these politically charged experiences of loss constitutes a major shaping force in French Romantic art, and that pursuit of this theme in light of parallel developments in literature and political debate reveals a pattern of disenchantment transmuted into cultural capital. Focusing on imagery that spoke to loss through visual and verbal idioms particular to France in the aftermath of the Revolution and Empire, the book illuminates canonical works by major figures such as Eugène Delacroix, Théodore Chassériau, and Camille Corot, as well as long-forgotten images freighted with significance for nineteenth-century viewers. A study in national bereavement—an urgent theme in the present moment—the book provides a new lens through which to view the coincidence of imagination and strife at the heart of French Romanticism. Although the name stood for the organizers’ home cities, the Cobra artists hailed from countries in Europe, Africa, and the United States. This book investigates how a group of struggling young artists attempted to reinvent the international avant-garde after the devastation of the Second World War, to create artistic experiments capable of facing the challenges of postwar society. It explores how Cobra’s experimental, often collective art works and publications relate to broader debates in Europe about the use of images to commemorate violent events, the possibility of free expression in an art world constrained by Cold War politics, the breakdown of primitivism in an era of colonial independence movements, and the importance of spontaneity in a society increasingly dominated by the mass media. As in other parts of the world, ceramics in modern Japan developed along the three ontological trajectories of art, craft, and design. Yet, it is widely believed that no other modern nation was engaged with ceramics as much as Japan—a \"potter’s paradise\"—in terms of creation, exhibition, and discourse. This book explores how Japanese ceramics came to achieve such a status and why they were such significant forms of cultural production. Its medium-specific focus encourages examination of issues regarding materials and practices unique to ceramics, including their distinct role throughout Japanese cultural history. Going beyond descriptive historical treatments of ceramics as the products of individuals or particular styles, the closely intertwined chapters also probe the relationship between ceramics and modernity, including the ways in which ceramics in Japan were related to their counterparts in Asia and Europe. Featuring contributions by leading international specialists, this book will be useful to students and scholars of art history, design, and Japanese studies.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49788212150545,"sku":"GOR013784961","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":50698086646033,"sku":"NGR9781032087887","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1032087889.jpg?v=1750950855"},{"product_id":"reception-of-the-printed-image-in-the-fifteenth-and-sixteenth-centuries-book-magdalena-herman-9780367465117","title":"The Reception of the Printed Image in the Fifteenth and Sixteenth Centuries","description":"This book examines the early development of the graphic arts from the perspectives of material things, human actors and immaterial representations while broadening the geographic field of inquiry to Central Europe and the British Isles and considering the reception of the prints on other continents.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"US \/ VERY_GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":50348901892369,"sku":"CIN0367465116VG","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0367465116.jpg?v=1750909295"},{"product_id":"iconology-neoplatonism-and-the-arts-in-the-renaissance-book-berthold-hub-9780367895297","title":"Iconology, Neoplatonism, and the Arts in the Renaissance","description":"The mid-twentieth century saw a change in paradigms of art history: iconology. The main claim of this novel trend in art history was that renowned Renaissance artists (such as Botticelli, Leonardo, or Michelangelo) created imaginative syntheses between their art and contemporary cosmology, philosophy, theology, and magic. The Neoplatonism in the books by Marsilio Ficino and Giovanni Pico della Mirandola became widely acknowledged for its lasting influence on art. It thus became common knowledge that Renaissance artists were not exclusively concerned with problems intrinsic to their work but that their artifacts encompassed a much larger intellectual and cultural horizon. This volume brings together historians concerned with the history of their own discipline – and also those whose research is on the art and culture of the Italian Renaissance itself – with historians from a wide variety of specialist fields, in order to engage with the contested field of iconology. The book will be of interest to scholars working in art history, Renaissance history, Renaissance studies, historiography, philosophy, theology, gender studies, and literature.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"US \/ VERY_GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":50349765394705,"sku":"CIN0367895293VG","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0367895293.jpg?v=1751196542"},{"product_id":"american-artists-engage-the-built-environment-1960-1979-book-susanneh-bieber-9781032262680","title":"American Artists Engage the Built Environment, 1960-1979","description":"This volume reframes the development of US-American avant-garde art of the long 1960s—from minimal and pop art to land art, conceptual art, site-specific practices, and feminist art—in the context of contemporary architectural discourses. Susanneh Bieber analyzes the work of seven major artists, Donald Judd, Robert Grosvenor, Claes Oldenburg, Robert Smithson, Lawrence Weiner, Gordon Matta-Clark, and Mary Miss, who were closely associated with the formal-aesthetic innovations of the period. While these individual artists came to represent diverse movements, Bieber argues that all of them were attracted to the field of architecture—the work of architects, engineers, preservationists, landscape designers, and urban planners—because they believed these practices more directly shaped the social and material spaces of everyday life. This book’s contribution to the field of art history is thus twofold. First, it shows that the avant-garde of the long 1960s did not simply develop according to an internal logic of art but also as part of broader sociocultural discourses about buildings and cities. Second, it exemplifies a methodological synthesis between social art history and poststructural formalism that is foundational to understanding the role of art in the construction of a more just and egalitarian society. The book will be of interest to scholars working in art history, architecture, urbanism, and environmental humanism.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"US \/ VERY_GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":50377405923601,"sku":"CIN1032262680VG","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1032262680.jpg?v=1750854194"},{"product_id":"loss-in-french-romantic-art-literature-and-politics-book-jonathan-p-ribner-9781032027036","title":"Loss in French Romantic Art, Literature, and Politics","description":"An interdisciplinary examination of nineteenth-century French art pertaining to religion, exile, and the nation’s demise as a world power, this study concerns the consequences for visual culture of a series of national crises—from the assault on Catholicism and the flight of émigrés during the Revolution of 1789, to the collapse of the Empire and the dashing of hope raised by the Revolution of 1830. Through a close reading of a selection of key critics of the period—which will expand the remit beyond the canonical texts—the book examines the ways that modernist criticism’s discourse remains of especial disciplinary interest. Despite its alleged narrowness and exclusion, the debates of the 1960s raised fundamental questions concerning the nature of art writing. Those include arguments around the nature of value and judgement; the relationship between art criticism and art history; and the related problem of what we mean by the ‘contemporary.’ Stephen Moonie argues that within those often-fractious debates, there exists a shared discourse. And further, contrary to the current consensus that modernists were elitist, dogmatic, and irrelevant to contemporary debates on art, the study shows that there is much that we can learn from reconsidering their writings. The book is intended for all who are interested in Irish\/American interconnectedness and will be of particular interest to scholars and students of art history, visual culture, history, Irish studies and American studies.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":50698279289105,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":50698283090193,"sku":"NGR9781032121277","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1032121270.jpg?v=1751142777"},{"product_id":"artistic-responses-to-travel-in-the-western-tradition-book-sarah-j-lippert-9781032339146","title":"Artistic Responses to Travel in the Western Tradition","description":"In an era when ease of travel is greater than ever, it is also easy to overlook the degree to which voyages of the body - and mind - have generated an outpouring of artistry and creativity throughout the ages. Exploration of new lands and sensations is a fundamental human experience. This volume in turn provides a stimulating and adventurous exploration of the theme of travel from an art-historical perspective. Topical regions are covered ranging from the Grand Tour and colonialism to the travels of Hadrian in ancient times and Georgia O'Keeffe's journey to the Andes; from Vasari's Neoplatonic voyages to photographing nineteenth-century Japan. The scholars assembled consider both imaginary travel, as well as factual or embellished documentation of voyages. The essays are far-reaching spatially and temporally, but all relate to how art has documented the theme of travel in varying media across time and as illustrated and described by writers, artists, and illustrators. The scope of this volume is far-reaching both chronologically and conceptually, thereby appropriately documenting the universality of the theme to human experience.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":50698380181777,"sku":"NGR9781032339146","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52352224035089,"sku":"NLS9781032339146","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1032339144.jpg?v=1750854304"},{"product_id":"persistence-of-melancholia-in-arts-and-culture-book-andrea-bubenik-9781032338262","title":"The Persistence of Melancholia in Arts and Culture","description":"This book explores the history and continuing relevance of melancholia as an amorphous but richly suggestive theme in literature, music, and visual culture, as well as philosophy and the history of ideas. He is one of many artists of the first half of the twentieth-century who demonstrate the richness and diversity of an under-appreciated period in the history of American art. Visualizing the spiritual was one of the fundamental goals of early abstract painting in the years before and during World War I. Artists turned to alternative spirituality, the occult, and mysticism, believing that the pure use of line, shape, color, light and texture could convey spiritual insight. Jonson was steadfastly dedicated to this goal for most of his career and he always believed that modernist and abstract styles were the most effective and compelling means of achieving it.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":50698392994065,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":50698396664081,"sku":"NGR9781032339238","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1032339233.jpg?v=1750854305"},{"product_id":"picturing-courtiers-and-nobles-from-castiglione-to-van-dyck-book-john-peacock-9780367534936","title":"Picturing Courtiers and Nobles from Castiglione to Van Dyck","description":"This interdisciplinary study examines painted portraiture as a defining metaphor of elite self-representation in early modern culture. Beginning with Castiglione’s Book of the Courtier (1528), the most influential early modern account of the formation of elite identity, the argument traces a path across the ensuing century towards the images of courtiers and nobles by the most persuasive of European portrait painters, Van Dyck, especially those produced in London during the 1630s. It investigates two related kinds of texts: those which, following Castiglione, model the conduct of the ideal courtier or elite social conduct more generally; and those belonging to the established tradition of debates about the condition of nobility –how far it is genetically inherited and how far a function of excelling moral and social behaviour. Van Dyck is seen as contributing to these discussions through the language of pictorial art. The book will be of interest to scholars working in art history, cultural history, early modern history and Renaissance studies.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":50698746888465,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":50698748920081,"sku":"NGR9780367534936","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0367534932.jpg?v=1751324518"},{"product_id":"deconstructing-the-myths-of-islamic-art-book-onur-ztrk-9780367772666","title":"Deconstructing the Myths of Islamic Art","description":"Deconstructing the Myths of Islamic Art addresses how researchers can challenge stereotypical notions of Islam and Islamic art while avoiding the creation of new myths and the encouragement of nationalistic and ethnic attitudes.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":50698793025809,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":50698794860817,"sku":"NGR9780367772666","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":51776903905553,"sku":"GOR014399688","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52521351151889,"sku":"NLS9780367772666","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52735154290961,"sku":"NIN9780367772666","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0367772663.jpg?v=1751038377"},{"product_id":"book-of-hours-and-the-body-book-sherry-c-m-lindquist-9780367504526","title":"The Book of Hours and the Body","description":"This book explores our corporeal connections to the past by considering what three theoretical approaches - somaesthetics, posthumanism, and the uncanny - may reveal about both premodern and postmodern terms of embodiment. It takes as its point of departure a selection of fifteenth-century northern European Books of Hours - evocative objects designed at once to inscribe social status, to strengthen religious commitment, to entertain, to stimulate emotions, and to encourage discomfiting self-scrutiny. Studying their kaleidoscopically strange, moving, humorous, disturbing, and imaginative pages not only enables a window into relationships among bodies, images, and things in the past but also in our own internet era, where surprisingly popular memes drawn from such manuscripts constitute a part of our own visual culture. In the case of Henry Moore, the role of photography (both as source material and form of documentation) has recently become a new terrain for researching and interpreting his work. Film, however, remains absent from Moore scholarship. Focusing on four films about Moore's sculpture in the 1940s and 1950s, The Making of Henry Moore on Film: A Cultural History considers how these films broke new ground in the specialised genre of the film on art, which throve in these decades. Katerina Loukopoulou places the relationship between sculpture and film within the relevant historical and cultural contexts of post-war Britain (1945-1959), the period during which Moore's public identity was consolidated. The book draws on extensive archival research in the production files of these films and on detailed contextual research (press cuttings, periodicals, festival pamphlets) of contemporaneous writings about the remediation of works of art and about the reception of these films on Moore. By revealing overlooked aspects of what these films stood for at this historical conjuncture, Loukopoulou examines the specific aesthetic and political meanings of Moore's sculpture as explored by each film.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":51201421082897,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":51201422655761,"sku":"NGR9781409452836","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1409452832.jpg?v=1751208927"},{"product_id":"architecture-and-interaction-in-the-thirteenth-century-mediterranean-building-id-book-heather-grossman-9781409467533","title":"Architecture and Interaction in the Thirteenth-Century Mediterranean: Building Identity in the Medieval Morea (Routledge Research in Art History)","description":"The remains of churches and monasteries throughout the mountainous landscape of the Greek Peloponnesos - the Morea, as it then was known - attest to the interaction of western Europeans and Byzantine Greeks following the Fourth Crusade of 1204 C.E. Architecture and Interaction in the Thirteenth-Century Mediterranean: Building Identity in the Medieval Morea presents fourteen, under-studied monuments in order to assess the role of buildings and their ornamentation in the creation of identity in this Mediterranean region. Architecture and Interaction investigates and reframes scholarly conceptualizations of cultural interaction and revives the ancient Greek term methexis, meaning communion or participation, to elucidate the material culture of complex societies characterized by ever-changing cultural encounters. The book explores the mechanisms of exchange of architectural knowledge and memory among patrons, architects, masons, and viewers. A fully illustrated Appendix catalogs each church - some for the first time in English - and the study creates a model for contextually specific readings of architecture and identity. Studies of Japonisme have been dominated by searching out relationships of influence between artworks–trying to identify which specific works influenced a particular artist. Ono argues that a more holistic understanding of 'spillover effects' is necessary in fully comprehending the nuances of these relationships. She bases this argument on documents and works of art in the context of globalisation, looking at the relationships between James McNeill Whistler and others with their contemporaries in the Japanese artistic and literary worlds. This was a more complex two-way exchange than is often appreciated, with Western artists taking inspiration from (to them) new Japanese styles, while Japanese artists and writers were trying to craft a 'modern', more western-influences style to reflect the modern nation of Japan emerging onto the world stage after centuries of relative isolation. A fascinating analysis of the role of globalisation and cultural exchange in the development of new and hybrid artforms, that will be essential reading for scholars of this fascinating period in international art history.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":51284962050321,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":51284964213009,"sku":"NIN9781032380254","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52594906857745,"sku":"NLS9781032380254","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/103238025X.jpg?v=1751205554"},{"product_id":"pictures-generation-at-hallwalls-book-vera-dika-9781032106786","title":"The Pictures Generation at Hallwalls","description":"In this book, Vera Dika rewrites the story of the Pictures Generation from the perspective of the Hallwalls Contemporary Arts Center in Buffalo, NY. Her work is based on interviews with living artists, archival research, and personal collections, including films, videotapes, and sound recordings. At once aesthetic, cultural, and political, this renewed perspective asks new questions and rewrites past assumptions about the artists’ work. The legendary members of the East Coast Pictures Generation emerged at Hallwalls Contemporary Art Center in Buffalo in the mid-1970s. These young people had started Hallwalls, an artist-run organization that invited artists from a variety of mediums to show their work. It also featured productions by the founding members themselves: Robert Longo, Charles Clough, Cindy Sherman, Nancy Dwyer, and Michael Zwack. The works discussed in the volume include performance, video, films, painting, music, and literature, and have been chosen because of the way they foreground states of the body in relationship to conditions of their medium. As a distinguishing feature of Hallwalls artists’ work, the practice uses these traces to make metaphors on the process of mechanical reproduction itself. The Hallwalls artists’ work also gives testament to Buffalo and to New York City, the cities that formed their historical contexts. This research-intensive book argues that Oldenburg’s art relies on machine vision and other metaphors to visualize the structure and image content of human thought as an artistic problem. Anchored in new oral history interviews and extensive archival material, it brings together understudied visual and concrete poetry, experimental films, fifteen group performances (commonly referred to as happenings), and a close analysis of his well-known installations of The Street (1960) and The Store (1961–62), effectively setting in place a reexamination of Oldenburg’s pop art from the street, store, home, and cinema years. Genevieve Warwick argues that the ephemeral arts of ritual occasion acted as a locus of artistic experiment for the artist in many respects similar to his use of preparatory models, to suggest that Bernini’s artistry sprang from the fabric of ritual in both material and cultural terms. From processional floats to court stage sets for the ritual occasions of church and state, such ephemeral arts were largely made of wax, clay, papier mâché, wood, stucco and plaster, assembled into scenographic ensembles with textiles, canvas and paint. Similarly, Bernini’s preparatory models for marble or bronze sculpture were of plaster and clay, even mud and straw, or wax and painted wood, as plentiful and affordable materials that were readily available for use and reuse as required. This book will be of interest to scholars working in art history and Renaissance studies.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":51597283492113,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":51597283819793,"sku":"NGR9781032499185","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1032499184.jpg?v=1751238363"},{"product_id":"conceptual-art-after-modernism-book-robert-bailey-9781032882543","title":"Conceptual Art After Modernism","description":"This study provides a new interpretation of art after modernism by foregrounding the importance of conceptual thinking as a pervasive force for change in art and art history since 1950. Robert Bailey shows how distinctions between art and art history gave way as conceptual thinking provided artists and art historians with a common means to reassess what art could be and do in the world. Bailey assesses the results of artful and scholarly inquiries combining creative activity with intellectual rigor to proffer new approaches to a variety of social and environmental concerns, ranging from questions about human identity—including race, class, gender, and sexuality—to activist efforts to redress everything from abortion access to migrants’ rights, to climate change. This book provides both a historical overview of these developments and close analyses of key works and texts, spanning 1950 to the present and encompassing broad geographic scope with special attention paid to Indigenous art. In the 12th century, cotton, an imported crop, was plucked from the fields and entered the margins of agricultural treatises. The material was eventually “acknowledged” as cotton, an object distinct from silk, worthy of representation. By the late 16th century, representations of the plant and of the labor used to process it were incorporated into agricultural publications. During the 18th century, cotton imagery and discussions were situated in imperial encyclopaedias, further consolidating its classical legacy. Governor-general Fang Guancheng (1696\/8-1768) deemed cotton a worthy subject for ambitious painting. In 1765, he designed the Pictures of Cotton, a series of sixteen paintings complete with commentary that delineated the processes of growing cotton and manufacturing fabric. He presented the Pictures of Cotton to the Qianlong emperor (r. 1735-1796) who inscribed his imperial verse on each scene. Knowledge about the fiber became a means to collaborate at the highest level of the court and bureaucracy. Fang replicated the series, complete with imperial verses into carved stone to enable replication. The Jiaqing emperor (r.1796-1821) likewise published the series as woodblock prints. Upon domestication, cotton advanced political legitimacy, becoming a commodity that attained canonical status. Cotton was represented in a scopic regime formulated by the Qing imperium, and in the process, the Imperially Inscribed Pictures of Cotton became the authoritative vision of cotton. This study is ideal for those studying Chinese art, Chinese history, Asian Studies, and history of science and technology.’","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":51597586596113,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":51597586825489,"sku":"NGR9781032888019","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1032888016.jpg?v=1751111268"},{"product_id":"visual-legacy-of-alexander-the-great-from-the-renaissance-to-the-age-of-revoluti-book-vctor-mnguez-9781032549903","title":"The Visual Legacy of Alexander the Great from the Renaissance to the Age of Revolution","description":"This is an analysis of the diverse facets of Alexander the Great’s image from the Renaissance era through the Baroque into the nineteenth century. Perceived as the first sovereign ruler of the world, for centuries Alexander became an exemplar for the most ambitious kings and emperors. This cultural phenomenon flourished above all in the Renaissance while extending into the nineteenth century. Early modern monarchs’ identification with Alexander associated them with ideas of kingly wisdom. Yet this admiration waned on occasions. Napoleon was Alexander of Macedonia’s most ardent critic. During the nineteenth century, the Macedonian hero was viewed as an individual who won control of the Achaemenid empire, but also underwent a progressive moral decline that converted him into a tyrant. The book reveals how those monuments enable new perspectives and understanding of histories as well as a heightened involvement of viewers through not simply their subject matter but also, most crucially, their actual form and design. While some contributors explore new approaches to the art of commemoration that artists and designers have deployed in recent monuments, others examine how artists have undertaken creative engagements with historical statuary and sites, using these interventions to offer critique and commentary. Additionally, the contributions consider the impact of political change on ways in which an inherited commemorative landscape is interpreted and negotiated. Questions considered by the contributions include: How might new monuments be shaped and how might they function differently from those of the past? Is there a place for portraiture in the contemporary commemorative landscape? Should commemorative monuments be envisaged as permanent fixtures or are temporary approaches more viable? How effectively have artists disrupted the meanings of historical monuments and sites through installation, performance, video and other media? How has political change played out at historical sites, affecting how commemorative monuments from prior dispensations are understood in the 2020s? This collection will be of value to researchers in Art History, Visual Studies and Heritage Studies, as well as scholars in all disciplines and fields who are interested in public art, public memory and the politics of commemoration.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":51598446592273,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":51598446821649,"sku":"NGR9781041005797","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1041005792.jpg?v=1751015220"},{"product_id":"art-patronage-and-conflicting-memories-in-early-modern-iberia-book-maria-teresa-chicote-pompanin-9781032406688","title":"Art Patronage and Conflicting Memories in Early Modern Iberia","description":"This volume investigates the mechanisms (artworks, treatises, and other forms of cultural patronage) that the Marquises of Villena and their opponents used to operate in the cultural battlefield of the time with the aim of understanding how their conflicting historical memories were constructed and manipulated. Concentrating on the late fifteenth and early sixteenth centuries, the book examines these two aristocrats and demonstrates that political tensions led not only to military conflicts during this period but also to conflicts fought on cultural grounds, through the promotion of artistic, religious, and literary programmes. Maria Teresa Chicote Pompanin investigates why the Marquises of Villena lost in both the military and cultural battlefields and explains how the negative historical memories forged by their opponents in the late fifteenth century managed to become the official historical truth that has remained unchallenged to this day. Amongst the themes discussed are the concepts of centre and periphery, replicas and alterations, and how items and ideas were reinterpreted. The processes of appropriation and transformation create an artistic geography of identities in which originality can be studied through the processes of assimilation of images shared between Europe, Asia, and America. Chapters challenge the negative conceptualization of “copying” arguing that the “copy” is not simply a derivation but a new creation that is shaped by the interests and preferences of the receiver. The book reflects on what ‘the world’ looks and feels like before and after World War One—and thus also concerns creativity and destruction alike in the context of modernity. Over the course of three chapters, the author focusses on works in which avant-garde artists combine and experiment with various arts and media to create alternative narratives of the world’s creation. These works include three canonized ‘total works of art’: Der Weltbaumeister (The World’s Master Builder, 1920), an illustrated book imagined as an architectural play by the Expressionist architect Bruno Taut; the Futurist opera Победа над Cолнцем (Victory Over the Sun, 1913) by Aleksei Kruchenykh, Velimir Khlebnikov, Kazimir Malevich and Mikhail Matiushin; and the Cubist ballet La Création du monde (The Creation of the World, 1923) by Blaise Cendrars, Fernand Léger, Darius Milhaud and Jean Börlin. Providing new readings of these classic works that dive deeply into the avant-garde’s inter-artistic search for new modes of mediation as well as its dialogue with science, politics and technology, Abigael van Alst demonstrates how each of these artworks staged a cosmogony—an alternative story of the universe's creation—which, simultaneously, experimentally and critically recounted the story of modernity. This new book is ideal for researchers and scholars in History of Art, Modernism, and Comparative Literature.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":51620675617041,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":51620675649809,"sku":"NGR9781041004035","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1041004036.jpg?v=1752143966"},{"product_id":"landscape-and-nature-in-scandinavian-art-book-maryclaire-pappas-9781032806105","title":"Landscape and Nature in Scandinavian Art","description":"This edited volume foregrounds new and vital scholarship shaping Scandinavian art historical research on the representations of the natural world.
