Emphasis is put on high-resolution shock-capturing finite-volume schemes based on Riemann solvers. The applications of such schemes, in particular the PPM method, are given and include large-scale simulations of supernova explosions by core collapse and thermonuclear burning and astrophysical jets. Parts two and three treat radiation hydrodynamics. The power of adaptive (moving) grids is demonstrated with a number of stellar-physical simulations showing very crispy shock-front structures.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":51064491114769,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":51064493539601,"sku":"NIN9783540644484","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52663670178065,"sku":"NLS9783540644484","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/3540644482.jpg?v=1751416742"},{"product_id":"solar-and-stellar-dynamos-book-paul-charbonneau-9783642430473","title":"Solar and Stellar Dynamos","description":"Astrophysical dynamos are at the heart of cosmic magnetic fields of a wide range of scales, from planets and stars to entire galaxies. This book presents a thorough, step-by-step introduction to solar and stellar dynamos. Looking first at the ultimate origin of cosmic seed magnetic fields, the antagonists of field amplification are next considered: resistive decay, flux expulsion, and flows ruled out by anti-dynamo theorems. Two kinematic flows that can act as dynamos are then studied: the Roberts cell and the CP-flow. Mean-field electrodynamics and derivation of the mean-field dynamo equations lead to the alpha Omega-dynamo, the flux transport dynamo, and dynamos based on the Babcock-Leighton mechanism. Alternatives to the mean-field theory are also presented, as are global MHD dynamo simulations. Fluctuations and grand minima in the solar cycle are discussed in terms of dynamo modulations through stochastic forcing and nonlinear effects. The book concludes with an overview of the major challenges in understanding stellar magnetic fields and their evolution in terms of various dynamo models, global MHD simulations, and fossil fields. Each chapter is accompanied by an annotated bibliography, guiding the readers to the relevant technical literature, which may lead them to carry out their own research in the field of dynamo theory.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":51828644610321,"sku":null,"price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":51828644872465,"sku":"CIN3642430473G","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52354462843153,"sku":"NLS9783642430473","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9783642430473.jpg?v=1752761771"},{"product_id":"astrophysics-at-very-high-energies-book-felix-aharonian-9783642427138","title":"Astrophysics at Very High Energies","description":"With the success of Cherenkov Astronomy and more recently with the launch of NASA’s Fermi mission, very-high-energy astrophysics has undergone a revolution in the last years. It was the first time that binary systems were the center of attention of our course. The established concept and organisation of the Advanced Course has been retained: three scientists, all acknowledged experts in their respective fields, were each invited to give nine one-hour lectures within the period of a week. The Advanced Course took place from April 6 to 11, 1992, at Les Diablerets, a charming resort in the Swiss alps. The high level of the lectures, the international background of the 65 participants, including many young students, and the beauty of the surroundings all contributed to the success of the course. The lecture notes of this course, the 22nd in our series, are also the third to be published by Springer-Verlag. Well over half of all stars seem to exist in binary systems. The study of binary evolution is therefore essential for our understanding of stellar evolution in general. The evolution of interacting binaries contains in itself many of the problems met in other fields of modern astrophysics. This is very apparent in these lecture notes.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52131946201361,"sku":"NLS9783540570141","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9783540570141.jpg?v=1757513869"},{"product_id":"deep-universe-book-ar-sandage-9783540589136","title":"The Deep Universe","description":"Cosmology has not been the subject matter of a Saas-Fee Advanced Course since 1978. That occasion was the memorable course entitled Observational Cosmologyy with lecturers J.E. Gunn, M.S. Longair, and M.J. Rees. A new course on cosmology seemed overdue, and we subsequently planned and or- ganized, with the endorsement of the Swiss Society of Astrophysics and As- tronomy, the present, 23   Saas-Fee Advanced Course. Probing (drilling) the Universe to greatest depths, in terms of diffuse radiation and discrete objects, with all consequences for our understanding of cosmic evolution, was meant to be the unifying aspect of this course. Hence the title The Deep Universe. We are very happy to have won such competent and brilliant scientists as lecturers. Malcolm Longair - Saas-Fee lecturer for the second time  - lectured on cosmological background radiation (The Physics of Background Radia- tion); Richard Kron on observations of extremely distant galaxies (Evo- lution in the Galaxy Population); while the Grand Master of Cosmology, Allan Sandage, provided the fundaments of it all, also in a historical sense (Practical Cosmology: Inventing the Past). The course took place from 29 March to 3 April, 1993, in Les Diablerets, with around 90 participants. What determines whether a young star cluster remains bound (such as an open or globular cluster), or disperses to join the field stars in the disc of the Galaxy? That occasion was the memorable course entitled Observational Cosmologyy with lecturers J.E. Gunn, M.S. Longair, and M.J. Rees. A new course on cosmology seemed overdue, and we subsequently planned and or- ganized, with the endorsement of the Swiss Society of Astrophysics and As- tronomy, the present, 23   Saas-Fee Advanced Course. Probing (drilling) the Universe to greatest depths, in terms of diffuse radiation and discrete objects, with all consequences for our understanding of cosmic evolution, was meant to be the unifying aspect of this course. Hence the title The Deep Universe. We are very happy to have won such competent and brilliant scientists as lecturers. Malcolm Longair - Saas-Fee lecturer for the second time  - lectured on cosmological background radiation (The Physics of Background Radia- tion); Richard Kron on observations of extremely distant galaxies (Evo- lution in the Galaxy Population); while the Grand Master of Cosmology, Allan Sandage, provided the fundaments of it all, also in a historical sense (Practical Cosmology: Inventing the Past). The course took place from 29 March to 3 April, 1993, in Les Diablerets, with around 90 participants. The format was as usual, every lecturer giving 9 or 10 lectures of 45 minutes.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":52480992542993,"sku":null,"price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52480993952017,"sku":"NLS9783642082092","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9783642082092.jpg?v=1759851062"},{"product_id":"sun-solar-analogs-and-the-climate-book-joanna-dorothy-haigh-9783642062797","title":"The Sun, Solar Analogs and the Climate","description":"The 34th Saas-Fee advanced course of the Swiss Society of Astronomy and Astrophysics (SA) took place from March 15 to 20, 2004, in Davos, on the subject of The Sun, Solar Analogs and the Climate. In these times of concern about global warming, it is important to und- stand solar variability and its interaction with the atmosphere. Therefore, this course addressed the observed va- ability of the Sun and the present understanding of the variability's origin and its impact on the Earth's climate. Comparing the solar variability with that of solar analog stars leads to a better understanding of the solar activity cycle and magnetic activity in general, and helps us to estimate how large the solar variations could be on longer time scales. It was the first time that binary systems were the center of attention of our course. The established concept and organisation of the Advanced Course has been retained: three scientists, all acknowledged experts in their respective fields, were each invited to give nine one-hour lectures within the period of a week. The Advanced Course took place from April 6 to 11, 1992, at Les Diablerets, a charming resort in the Swiss alps. The high level of the lectures, the international background of the 65 participants, including many young students, and the beauty of the surroundings all contributed to the success of the course. The lecture notes of this course, the 22nd in our series, are also the third to be published by Springer-Verlag. Well over half of all stars seem to exist in binary systems. The study of binary evolution is therefore essential for our understanding of stellar evolution in general. The evolution of interacting binaries contains in itself many of the problems met in other fields of modern astrophysics. This is very apparent in these lecture notes.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":52481818231057,"sku":null,"price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52481819345169,"sku":"NLS9783642081668","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9783642081668.jpg?v=1759852286"},{"product_id":"high-energy-spectroscopic-astrophysics-book-steven-m-kahn-9783642073489","title":"High-Energy Spectroscopic Astrophysics","description":"After three decades of intense research in X-ray and gamma-ray astronomy, the time was ripe to summarize basic knowledge on X-ray and gamma-ray spectroscopy for interested students and researchers ready to become involved in new high-energy missions. This book presents a thorough, step-by-step introduction to solar and stellar dynamos. Looking first at the ultimate origin of cosmic seed magnetic fields, the antagonists of field amplification are next considered: resistive decay, flux expulsion, and flows ruled out by anti-dynamo theorems. Two kinematic flows that can act as dynamos are then studied: the Roberts cell and the CP-flow. Mean-field electrodynamics and derivation of the mean-field dynamo equations lead to the alpha Omega-dynamo, the flux transport dynamo, and dynamos based on the Babcock-Leighton mechanism. Alternatives to the mean-field theory are also presented, as are global MHD dynamo simulations. Fluctuations and grand minima in the solar cycle are discussed in terms of dynamo modulations through stochastic forcing and nonlinear effects. The book concludes with an overview of the major challenges in understanding stellar magnetic fields and their evolution in terms of various dynamo models, global MHD simulations, and fossil fields. Each chapter is accompanied by an annotated bibliography, guiding the readers to the relevant technical literature, which may lead them to carry out their own research in the field of dynamo theory.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":52500753547537,"sku":"NGR9783642320927","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":53522731729169,"sku":"NLS9783642320927","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9783642320927.jpg?v=1760138821"},{"product_id":"first-light-in-the-universe-book-abraham-loeb-9783662518434","title":"First Light in the Universe","description":"The exploration of the first billion years of the history of the Universe represents one of the great challenges of contemporary astrophysics. Exceptionally, the topic of this course was not purely astrophysical, but themembersoftheSAdecidedtosupportitallthesameduetothetimely topic of global warming and its possible link to solar variations. In these times of concern about global warming, it is important to und- stand solar variability and its interaction with the atmosphere. Only in this way can we distinguish between the solar and anthropogenic contributions to the rising temperatures. Therefore, this course addressed the observed va- ability of the Sun and the present understanding of the variability's origin and its impact on the Earth's climate. Comparing the solar variability with that of solar analog stars leads to a better understanding of the solar activity cycle and magnetic activity in general, and helps us to estimate how large the solar variations could be on longer time scales. Inspiteofthefantasticweatherandsnowconditionswhichreignedduring this week, the participants assiduously took part in the lectures. This is proof ofthehighqualityofthelecturesthatthethreespeakers, JoannaHaigh, Mike Lockwood and David Soderblom, delivered. We deeply thank them for their contributions and e?orts and hope that the readers will enjoy the book as much as we enjoyed their lectures.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":52665708904721,"sku":null,"price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52665710084369,"sku":"NLS9783540238560","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9783540238560.jpg?v=1762278034"},{"product_id":"galactic-interstellar-medium-book-wb-burton-9783540558057","title":"The Galactic Interstellar Medium","description":"According to a rule that has proved to lead to success, but also to chal lenge the lecturers' energy, the format of a Saas-Fee Advanced Course consists traditionally of 28 lectures of 45 minutes which take place in the morning and late afternoon, leaving ample time for discussions, self-study, hiking or skiing.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":52674927591697,"sku":null,"price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52674928509201,"sku":"NLS9783540558057","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9783540558057.jpg?v=1762300733"},{"product_id":"astrophysics-at-very-high-energies-book-felix-aharonian-9783642361333","title":"Astrophysics at Very High Energies","description":"With the success of Cherenkov Astronomy and more recently with the launch of NASA’s Fermi mission, very-high-energy astrophysics has undergone a revolution in the last years. This book provides three comprehensive and up-to-date reviews of the recent advances in gamma-ray astrophysics and of multi-messenger astronomy. Felix Aharonian and Charles Dermer address our current knowledge on the sources of GeV and TeV photons, gleaned from the precise measurements made by the new instrumentation. Lars Bergström presents the challenges and prospects of astro-particle physics with a particular emphasis on the detection of dark matter candidates. The topics covered by the 40th Saas-Fee Course present the capabilities of current instrumentation and the physics at play in sources of very-high-energy radiation to students and researchers alike. This book will encourage and prepare readers for using space and ground-based gamma-ray observatories, as well as neutrino and other multi-messenger detectors.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52675166175505,"sku":"NLS9783642361333","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9783642361333.jpg?v=1762301278"},{"product_id":"high-energy-spectroscopic-astrophysics-book-steven-m-kahn-9783540405016","title":"High-Energy Spectroscopic Astrophysics","description":"After three decades of intense research in X-ray and gamma-ray astronomy, the time was ripe to summarize basic knowledge on X-ray and gamma-ray spectroscopy for interested students and researchers ready to become involved in new high-energy missions. The emphasis is on physical principles and observing methods rather than a discussion of particular classes of high-energy objects, but many examples and new results are included in the three chapters as well.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52675741155601,"sku":"NLS9783540405016","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9783540405016.jpg?v=1762302607"},{"product_id":"galaxies-interactions-and-induced-star-formation-book-robert-c-kennicutt-jr-9783540635697","title":"Galaxies: Interactions and Induced Star Formation","description":"This volume contains the written versions of the lectures given at the 26th course of the renowned Saas-Fee series. The book represents a comprehensive and up-to-date review of the field of galaxy interaction. Nowadays, galaxies are no longer seen as immutable objects: they evolve, interact, merge, blaze, and reshape. Dynamic forces can induce powerful stellar activity able to transform the matter composition and morphology of galaxies. The lectures included in this book aim at a better understanding of these remarkable and fascinating phenomena. Though the book is intended for graduate students and young post-docs in astrophysics, it contains more advanced and original material, as well as historical perspectives, which will be of great interest to experts and astronomy teachers also.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52676086923537,"sku":"NLS9783540635697","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9783540635697.jpg?v=1762303444"},{"product_id":"origin-of-the-galaxy-and-local-group-book-joss-bland-hawthorn-9783642417191","title":"The Origin of the Galaxy and Local Group","description":"This volume contains the updated and expanded lecture notes of the 37th Saas-Fee Advanced Course organised by the Swiss Society for Astrophysics and Astronomy. The three lecturers of the 35th Saas-Fee Advanced Course cover the field from observational, theoretical and numerical perspectives. Highly sensitive, wide-field electronic detectors have enabled the discovery and the exploration of the Kuiper Belt, while fast computers allow for numerical simulations to be made with a degree of sophistication previously unimaginable. Additionally, the perception of the Solar system in the bigger context of the galactic disk is changing, particularly as planets encircling other stars are detected. This volume, reviewing what is known about the Solar system, is therefore extremely timely, and the style it is written in conveys the excitement this field of research holds.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52676151509265,"sku":"NLS9783540719571","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52761638306065,"sku":"NIN9783540719571","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9783540719571.jpg?v=1762303593"},{"product_id":"extrasolar-planets-book-patrick-cassen-9783540292166","title":"Extrasolar Planets","description":"Swiss Society for Astrophysics and Astronomy","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52676280353041,"sku":"NLS9783540292166","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9783540292166.jpg?v=1762303895"},{"product_id":"extrasolar-planets-book-patrick-cassen-9783642067228","title":"Extrasolar Planets","description":"Swiss Society for Astrophysics and Astronomy","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52676737564945,"sku":"NLS9783642067228","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9783642067228.jpg?v=1762304736"}],"url":"https:\/\/www.worldofbooks.com\/en-gb\/collections\/saas-fee-advanced-course-book-series.oembed?page=2","provider":"World of Books ","version":"1.0","type":"link"}
