It is an important resource on the subject of Potentially Polluting Wrecks that synthesizes previously published information that was not academically or scientifically produced. This includes numerous international studies of shipwreck databases and threats posed by world war wrecks containing oil and other hazardous materials that could spill. This book evaluates these materials and presents new analyses and investigations with modern technology that assist in locating, documenting, and remediating polluting wreck sites. Consequently, this volume calls for increased ocean exploration missions to locate sunken merchant vessels that may pose pollution hazards and site assessments to determine any potential risks. This book is of interest to government officials, educators, archaeologists and practitioners working in the field of underwater archaeology. This is an open access book.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":50329508217105,"sku":"NGR9783031579592","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/3031579593.jpg?v=1750934114"},{"product_id":"first-settlement-of-remote-oceania-book-mike-t-carson-9783319010465","title":"First Settlement of Remote Oceania","description":"This book offers the only synthesis of early-period Marianas archaeology, marking the first human settlement of Remote Oceania about 1500 B.C.  In these remote islands of the northwest Pacific Ocean, archaeological discoveries now can define the oldest site contexts, dating, and artifacts of a Neolithic (late stone-age) people. This ancient settlement was accomplished by the world’s longest open-ocean voyage in human history at its time, more than 2000 km from any contemporary populated area. This work brings the isolated Mariana Islands into the forefront of scientific research of how people first settled Remote Oceania, further important for understanding long-distance human migration in general. Given this significance, the early Marianas sites deserve close attention that has been awkwardly missing until now. The author draws on his years of intensive field research to define the earliest Marianas sites in scientific detail but accessible for broad readership. It covers three major topics: 1) situating the ancient sites in their original environmental contexts; 2) inventory of the early-period sites and their dating; and 3) the full range of pottery, stone tools, shell ornaments, and other artifacts.  The work concludes with discussing the impacts of the findings on Asia-Pacific archaeology and on human global migration studies.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":51061895856401,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":51061898379537,"sku":"NIN9783319010465","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52146005901585,"sku":"NLS9783319010465","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/3319010468.jpg?v=1750998865"},{"product_id":"chronicles-of-colonialism-book-alok-kumar-kanungo-9789819723058","title":"Chronicles of Colonialism","description":"This book offers fresh perspectives on the legacy of colonialism in the North-east frontiers of India, especially the Naga Hills. The book interrogates the presence of British administrators and anthropologists in the Naga Hills as part of a popular discourse on (post) colonialism. It weaves a coherent chronological sequence of events and the prevailing attitudes of administrators-cum-anthropologists to understand the whole process of colonial intervention in the Naga Hills. It examines the conventional notions of 'tribes' and 'identity' within the context of the Naga Hills. It explores the transformation of Naga Hills through the lens of colonialism, providing a critical perspective on identity and the intricate web of historical narratives. It is a must-read for scholars, anthropologists, historians, and all those intrigued by the multifaceted legacy of colonialism in the Naga Hills.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":51717877596433,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":51717878120721,"sku":"NGR9789819723058","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9819723051.jpg?v=1751255269"},{"product_id":"in-search-of-the-broad-spectrum-revolution-in-paleolithic-southwest-europe-book-emily-lena-jones-9783319223506","title":"In Search of the Broad Spectrum Revolution in Paleolithic Southwest Europe","description":"The people who inhabited Southwest Europe from 30,000 to 13,000 years ago are often portrayed as big game hunters - and indeed, in some locations (Cantabrian Spain, the Pyrenees, the Dordogne) the archaeological record supports this interpretation.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52121261015313,"sku":"NLS9783319223506","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9783319223506.jpg?v=1757429896"},{"product_id":"field-archaeology-from-around-the-world-book-martin-carver-9783319098180","title":"Field Archaeology from Around the World","description":"The book is organised in four parts: Part 1 offers a summary of field procedures. Specifically, the contributors address the sub-theme of sea ports and sea power as part of understanding the African maritime landscape. Sea ports and surrounds are dynamic centers of maritime culture supporting a rich diversity of cultural groups and economic activities. Based on a field research carried out on the Kel Tadrart Tuareg in Libya, various facets of a surprisingly successful adaptation to an extremely arid environment are investigated. By means of an ethnoarchaeological approach, explored are the Kel Tadrart interactions with natural resources, the settlement patterns, the campsite structures, and the formation of the pastoral archaeological landscape, focusing on variability and its causes. The resilience of the Kel Tadrart is the key to understand the reasons of their choice to stay and live in the almost rainless Acacus Mountains, in spite of strong pressure to sedentarize in the neighboring oases. Through the collection of the interviews, participant observation, mapping of inhabited and abandoned campsites, remote sensing, and archival sources, various and different Kel Tadrart strategies, perceptions, and material cultures are examined. This book fills an important gap in the ethnoarchaeological research in central Sahara and in the study of desert pastoralism. Desert lands are likely to increase over the next decades but, our knowledge of human adaptations to these areas of the world is still patchy and generally biased by the idea that extremely arid lands are not suited for human occupation.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":52403448348945,"sku":null,"price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52403448807697,"sku":"NLS9783319085296","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9783319085296.jpg?v=1758760959"},{"product_id":"current-perspectives-on-the-archaeology-of-african-slavery-in-latin-america-book-pedro-paulo-a-funari-9781493912636","title":"Current Perspectives on the Archaeology of African Slavery in Latin America","description":"This edited volume aims at exploring a most relevant but somewhat neglected subject in archaeological studies, especially within Latin America: maroons and runaway settlements. Scholarship on runaways is well established and prolific in ethnology, anthropology and history, but it is still in its infancy in archaeology. A small body of archaeological literature on maroons exists for other regions, but no single volume discusses the subject in depth, including diverse eras and geographical areas within Latin American contexts. Thus, a central aim of the volume is to gather together some of the most active, Latin American maroon archaeologists in a single volume. This volume will thus become an important reference book on the subject and will also foster further archaeology research on maroon settlements. The introduction and comments by senior scholars provide a wide-ranging and comprehensive analysis of runaway archaeology that will help to indicate the global importance of this research.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":52433360978193,"sku":null,"price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52433361535249,"sku":"NLS9781493912636","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9781493912636.jpg?v=1759177736"},{"product_id":"metals-in-past-societies-book-shadreck-chirikure-9783319116402","title":"Metals in Past Societies","description":"This book seeks to communicate to both a global and local audience, the key attributes of pre-industrial African metallurgy such as technological variation across space and time, methods of mining and extractive metallurgy and the fabrication of metal objects.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":52451605774609,"sku":null,"price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52451606364433,"sku":"NLS9783319116402","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9783319116402.jpg?v=1759362062"},{"product_id":"cultural-landscape-management-at-borobudur-indonesia-book-masanori-nagaoka-9783319420455","title":"Cultural Landscape Management at Borobudur, Indonesia","description":"This volume investigates a historical account of the development of landscapes management at Borobudur.  In the 1970s and 1980s, there was large scale heritage conservation intervention of the Borobudur Temple by UNESCO and a simultaneous attempt of a wider landscapes management at Borobudur. But in the late 1980s and early 1990s, a global heritage discourse of an enlarged value system emerged. This discourse embraced issues such as cultural landscape, living history, intangible values, vernacular heritage, and urban landscapes with community involvement. The early 1990s saw a move against the European-dominated discourse of heritage as well as the concept of authenticity in the World Heritage system and other European-oriented classifications. The Asian experience in heritage discourse has begun to have a significant impact on the European standard. Additionally, in the 1990s, there was a gradual recognition of the concept of cultural landscape, which differed both within Asia and between Asia and Europe. These different ideas are evident in the case of the Borobudur Temple and its 1991 nomination to the World Heritage List. This book focuses how the management of the Borobudur historical monument and its landscapes was developed and reached current exclusive national legislative framework and set as an example for others sites in the region and for other regions to consider.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":52456515830033,"sku":null,"price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52456516419857,"sku":"NLS9783319420455","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9783319420455.jpg?v=1759377574"},{"product_id":"speaking-with-substance-book-kathryn-m-de-luna-9783319910345","title":"Speaking with Substance","description":"This volume proposes a supplemental approach to interdisciplinary historical reconstructions that draw on archaeological and linguistic data. Bringing together a variety of perspectives, the work is designed to serve several purposes and educate a few different types of readers. The work introduces and offers a history on deep seabed mining, the legal context, and how it fits into the new UN Convention on Law of the Sea on the Conservation and Sustainable Use of Marine Biological Diversity of Areas beyond National Jurisdiction (BBNJ treaty), the International Seabed Authority (DSM governing body), and the ecological impacts of deep seabed mining. The brief is also aimed at marine ecologists and other ocean scientists who may already be aware of the DSM and the ecological impacts, but not of the cultural heritage at risk. It introduces deep-water archaeology to them and a few case studies of heritage at risk, like in New Zealand or polluting wrecks. Finally, the book offers suggestions for steps forward and case studies of cultural heritage being included in environmental impact assessments. By the end of the book, all parties should feel educated enough to begin championing a ban on, or more regulations for, seabed mining. One additional strength of the book is that it gives voice to those without a traditional academic background. Intangible cultural heritage has been a hotbed issue in mining regulations and many indigenous voices, especially from the Pacific, have been loudly outspoken at the ISA. While writing thousand-word academic journal articles was not in their wheelhouse, they have given permission for their speeches to be transcribed and included in the book. This will bring a new set of voices into the scientific discourse on the issue. The book is also set up to have many images to de-mystify the deep and show readers the beauty that must be protected.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":52500739719441,"sku":null,"price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":52500740374801,"sku":"NGR9783031982378","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9783031982378.jpg?v=1760138792"},{"product_id":"contemporary-archaeology-of-emotions-re-framing-the-past-and-present-book-tuuli-matila-9783032009647","title":"The Contemporary Archaeology of Emotions: Re-Framing the Past and Present","description":"This SpringerBrief examines emotions in the past through contemporary archaeological materials. The author explores this topic using the context of a former working-class neighbourhood in northern Finland that existed during the Cold War era (1947-1987). Finland offers an interesting context to examine this because of the twofold emotional frames; the Cold War and capitalism versus the nascent welfare state. The push and pull between the values emphasizing universal care and compassion against the hardline militarisation and financial competition results in accessing different and, sometimes, contradictory emotions. It also affords a gendered view into the past and such an angle could be attempted in the context of the deep past as well.    This book offers several examples on how emotions could be accessed in the deep past and draws parallels between the examples from a contemporary 'western' country and various archaeological cultures and contexts. Emotions can be a bridge to access the secrets of human behavior. Such bridging is the core strength of archaeological education, but rarely are emotions acknowledged in the process. Lastly, this book underlines the role of emotions, specifically empathy, in archaeological education and in destabilizing contemporary political notions on social norms and contracts.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52532184088849,"sku":"NLS9783032009647","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9783032009647.jpg?v=1760659801"},{"product_id":"history-of-archaeological-tourism-book-margarita-dazandreu-9783030320751","title":"A History of Archaeological Tourism","description":"This book examines the relationship between archaeological tourism and professional archaeology. The volume situates this diversity of attitudes by examining past and current tendencies in studies of archaeologically-retrieved human remains across a range of geopolitical settings. In a context where methodological approaches have been increasingly standardized in recent decades, the volume poses the question if this standardization has led to a convergence in approaches to archaeological human remains or if significant differences remain between practitioners in different countries.
