This collection of essays highlights the importance of a multi-layered approach, which recognises that elders, their families and their communities are closely intertwined and need to be explored in relation to one another. Older Italian immigrants are one of the largest ethnic ageing groups in Australia, but their experiences of ageing in a foreign land have been largely overlooked. This volume addresses the multiple dimensions of the ageing experience of the Italian elderly by revisiting the concepts of health and culture in the ageing process. It analyses how the population gathers the information they need for their everyday lives in an era when governments and businesses use the Internet and mobile devices to disseminate information about services and products. It also examines the home as the locus and symbol of migratory goals and host country experiences of first-generation Italian-Australians and discusses how food habits are intricately bound up with life experiences and personal identities and how they remain psychologically and physiologically significant in their later lives. At a time when the world’s population is ageing at a rapid rate, this comprehensive study on an elderly migrant minority, their families and communities, is a valuable contribution to the literature of migration and ageing and serves as a framework for the development of aged care models for other migrant communities. To date there has been very little research undertaken to explore the issues related to the ageing of the Italian community in Australia, and even few studies that are specific to South Australia. Ageing between Cultures aims to address this.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":51051573248273,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":51051576295697,"sku":"NIN9781784624682","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1784624683.jpg?v=1751184633"},{"product_id":"bombarded-naples-sings-book-piero-bellanova-9781788039413","title":"Bombarded Naples Sings","description":"Intensely lyrical and unabashedly sensual, Piero Bellanova’s Bombarded Naples Sings is a masterpiece of Italian Futurist literature. The final volume to appear under the movement’s illustrious ‘Edizioni Futuriste di Poesia’ imprint, it was a product of Futurism’s concluding (and least studied) phase, extending from Italy’s entry into World War Two in 1940 to the death of the movement’s leader, F. T. Marinetti, four years later. First published in August 1943 – between the fall of Mussolini’s Fascist regime in July, and the invasion of the Italian mainland by Allied troops that September – it’s been seen as an attempt “to construct an epic of everyday life by means of a first-hand account of the war”. However, the ultimate purpose of this frequently moving work appears to have been of a consolatory, ‘spiritual’ nature, offering a means by which Bellanova and his readers might, temporarily, “escape the terrible devastation of our adored Italy through Art”. With its elegiac tone and precise imagistic language, Bombarded Naples Sings challenges stereotypical notions as to the grandiloquent, florid and aggressive nature of late Futurist poetry – typically characterized as little more than crude propaganda – addressing such themes as love, friendship and the beauty of the natural world This book is the first English translation of Bellanova’s 1943 anthology. The work and it’s contextualizing introduction will give readers an insight into the themes, preoccupations and stylistic character of late Futurist poetry","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":51051967774993,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":51051971019025,"sku":"NIN9781788039413","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1788039416.jpg?v=1751377606"},{"product_id":"friends-in-exile-italo-svevo-and-james-joyce-book-brian-moloney-9781788037785","title":"Friends in Exile: Italo Svevo and James Joyce","description":"This is the first book in English on the friendship that sprang up between these two major writers and the effects on both of that friendship. The encounter has long been undervalued by scholars, largely because Joyce and Svevo themselves appeared at times to attach relatively little importance to it, but it was in fact far from tangential to the development of their careers, coming as it did at key moments in their lives. This book is the first full study of the effect on both writers of their encounter and their unlikely friendship, in the light of the parallels between their life experiences and their shared culture. Stanislaus Joyce said: 'The happy chance that brought these two remarkable men together was a literary event that is likely to increase rather than decrease in interest in years to come'. A study of this unlikely friendship by an experienced Italianist will have much that is useful to say in this regard, particularly as our understanding of the importance of Svevo's Jewishness has changed greatly in recent years.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":51052863127825,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":51052865126673,"sku":"NIN9781788037785","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1788037782.jpg?v=1750898147"},{"product_id":"her-maestro-s-echo-book-pietro-frassica-9781848763524","title":"Her Maestro's Echo","description":"Much has been written about Luigi Pirandello, the great artist and grandiose personality. His beloved actress, Marta Abba’s side of the story, on the other hand, has never been adequately told. It’s a tale that includes intriguing behind-the-scenes vignettes of the early history of filmmaking, including Pirandello’s suspicions of Walt Disney; Marta’s meeting with Mussolini – a fan of hers – and her candid impressions of him; Marta’s marriage of convenience into the prominent Millikin family of Ohio; glimpses of an Italian media dynasty and its heavy-handed influence on the arts in general, and on Pirandello’s legacy and Marta’s career in particular. This book sketches out the story of a modern romance between an author and an actress, between an artist and his collaborating muse, between an older man and younger women. It also attempts to tackle the subject of Marta’s sexuality – an aspect of her life that has been little known until now.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":51105717911825,"sku":"NIN9781848763524","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1848763522.jpg?v=1750803179"},{"product_id":"through-human-love-to-god-book-pamela-williams-9781905886401","title":"Through Human Love to God","description":"Dante and Petrarch are two of the world's greatest love poets who convey the story of their emotional, intellectual, and religious life in part through a story of human love. The focus here is not so much on the myriad symbolic values and associations of Beatrice and Laura but rather both on the attitudes of these two poets to sexual desire in order to throw some light on the character of their human love and on the status and value they give to human love in the context of their Christian lives. For all the stark contrasts between them, Dante and Petrarch have been often compared, for they write in a common literary, classical, and Christian tradition. The comparison generally leads to the conclusion that Dante describes his human love experience as positive and constructive whilst Petrarch's experience of love is negative and destructive. My intention here is not to polarize their views in this way, but rather to identify the different yet positive and highly original value both poets attribute to human love. More than fifty years ago, Etienne Gilson claimed that Peter Abelard turned to loving God in the way that Heloise had loved him, with the disinterestedness which she claimed in loving him and which she accused him of never understanding in loving her. It is the general argument of this study that Dante and Petrarch, as well as leaving their original mark on the treatment of love in literature, have insights into religion, personal to them, which can be likewise characterized by examining their attitude to human love and the story of their personal loves. There are many more aspects to their Catholicism than are examined in these essays. The discussion here is of that part of their faith which grows out of, is coloured by, or at least can be explored, through their human loving.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":51140456218897,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":51140458807569,"sku":"NIN9781905886401","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":53473594900753,"sku":"CIN1905886403G","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1905886403.jpg?v=1750769500"},{"product_id":"calvino-and-the-pygmalion-paradigm-book-bridget-tompkins-9781784623296","title":"Calvino and the Pygmalion Paradigm","description":"Calvino and the Pygmalion Paradigm: Fashioning the Feminine in I nostri antenati and Gli amori difficili is the first book-length analysis of the representation of the feminine in Calvino’s fiction. Using the structural umbrella of the Pygmalion paradigm and using feminist interpretative techniques, this book offers interesting alternative readings of two of Calvino’s important early narrative collections. The Pygmalion paradigm concerns the creation by a male ‘artist’ of a feminine ideal and highlights the artificiality and narcissistic desire associated with the creation process. This book discusses Calvino’s active and deliberate work of self-creation, accomplished through extensive self-commentaries and exposes both the lack of importance Calvino placed on the feminine in his narratives and the relative absence of critical attention focused on this area. Relying on the analogy between Pygmalion’s pieces of ivory and Barthes’ ‘seme’ and drawing upon the ideas underlying Kristevan intertextuality, the book demonstrates that, despite Calvino’s professed lack of interest in character development, his female characters are carefully and purposefully constructed. A close reading of Calvino’s narratives, engaging directly with Freud, Lacan and the feminist psychoanalytical thinking of Kofmann, Kristeva, Kaplan and others, demonstrates how Calvino uses his female characters as foils for the existential reflections of his typically maladjusted and narcissistic male characters.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":51140481614097,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":51140484366609,"sku":"NIN9781784623296","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1784623296.jpg?v=1751216714"},{"product_id":"un-nuovo-cinema-politico-italiano-book-william-hope-9781780885414","title":"Un Nuovo Cinema Politico Italiano?","description":"The book is the first to examine contemporary Italian cinema from a socio-political perspective, drawing on the expertise of film scholars, political activists, and directors, including the Oscar-winning film-maker Giuseppe Tornatore. Its aim is to reconnect Italian film scholarship with the concrete realities of issues such as immigrant welfare, workers' rights and grass roots political activism in contemporary Italy. The volume's sections focus on the following themes: Workers and the Workplace; Gender, Sexuality and Social Identity; Migration, Multiculturalism and Integration. Each section is preceded by a detailed introduction examining key films, and the fifteen individual essays in the volume analyse influential films including Giuseppe Tornatore's La sconosciuta, Paolo Virzi's Tutta la vita davanti, Cristina Comencini's Bianco e nero, Ferzan Ozpetek's Saturno contro, Carlo Mazzacurati's La giusta distanza and Roberta Torre's Angela. The book also features an exclusive 6,000 word interview with the Oscar-winning director Giuseppe Tornatore, who discusses the socio-political influences that have emerged in his cinema.
