The word amphibious, as here used, includes the landing and supply of troops in combat as well as the air and naval support of the operations. The atoll operations described in this volume were amphibious from beginning to end. They were not simple seaborne hit-and-run raids of the Dieppe type. The objective was to secure the atolls as steppingstones to the next advance. The islands were relatively small, permitting continual naval and air support of the ground operations. Some outstanding examples of the co-ordination of fire support by artillery, naval gunfire, and air are found in this book. The advantages of simple plans and the disadvantages of the more complicated will stand out for the careful reader. The story of the capture of these atolls of Micronesia offers some of the best examples of combined operations that are available in the annals of modern war. Ground, sea, and air components were always present, and the effectiveness with which they were combined and co-ordinated accounts in large measure for the rapid success enjoyed in these instances by American arms. Units of the U.S. Navy and the U.S. Marine Corps were active participants in the operations and the role they played is treated in this volume as fully as is considered appropriate in a series devoted to the history of the U.S. Army in World War II. From the point of view of strategy, the significance of this volume lies in the fact that it tells the story of the beginnings of the drive across the Central Pacific toward the Japanese homeland. This concept of defeating Japan by pushing directly westward from Hawaii through the island bases of the mid-Pacific was traditional in American strategic thinking, but had never been put to test and was seriously challenged in some quarters. As is shown here, the test was first made in the campaigns against the Gilberts and Marshalls, the outcome was successful, and the experience gained was of inestimable value in planning for the subsequent conduct of the war in the Pacific.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"US \/ GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":50388316848401,"sku":"CIN151508258XG","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":51032875303185,"sku":"NIN9781515082583","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/151508258X.jpg?v=1751340682"},{"product_id":"leyte-book-m-hamlin-cannon-9781515082736","title":"Leyte","description":"With the Leyte Campaign the War in the Pacific entered a decisive stage. The period of limited offensives, bypassing, and island hopping was virtually over. American troops in greater numbers than ever before assembled in the Pacific Theater, supported by naval and air forces of corresponding size, fought and overcame Japanese forces of greater magnitude than any previously met. Though the spotlight is on the front-line fighting, the reader will find in this volume a faithful description of all arms and services performing their missions. The account is not exclusively an infantry story. It covers as well the support of ground fighting on Leyte by large-scale naval operations and by land-based air power under the most adverse conditions. In addition, careful attention to logistical matters, such as the movement of supplies and the evacuation of the wounded, gives the reader a picture of the less spectacular activities of an army in battle.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":51032649236753,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":51032651170065,"sku":"NIN9781515082736","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1515082733.jpg?v=1751211699"},{"product_id":"campaign-in-the-marianas-book-philip-a-crowl-9781515082668","title":"Campaign in the Marianas","description":null,"brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":51032731189521,"sku":"NIN9781515082668","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1515082660.jpg?v=1751211699"},{"product_id":"approach-to-the-philippines-book-robert-ross-smith-9781515192060","title":"The Approach to the Philippines","description":null,"brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":51032798691601,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":51032800985361,"sku":"NIN9781515192060","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1515192067.jpg?v=1751308562"},{"product_id":"cartwheel-book-john-miller-jr-9781515027874","title":"Cartwheel","description":null,"brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":51032905056529,"sku":"NIN9781515027874","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1515027872.jpg?v=1750958006"},{"product_id":"okinawa-book-james-m-burns-9781515082996","title":"Okinawa","description":null,"brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":51032953553169,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":51032955945233,"sku":"NIN9781515082996","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1515082997.jpg?v=1751021591"},{"product_id":"victory-in-papua-book-milner-s-9781515027829","title":"Victory in Papua","description":null,"brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":51033040388369,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":51033042256145,"sku":"NIN9781515027829","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1515027821.jpg?v=1750828615"},{"product_id":"fall-of-the-philippines-book-louis-morton-9781515027652","title":"The Fall of the Philippines","description":null,"brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":51033046810897,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":51033048711441,"sku":"NIN9781515027652","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1515027651.jpg?v=1750860987"},{"product_id":"triumph-in-the-philippines-book-robert-ross-smith-9781515082835","title":"Triumph in the Philippines","description":"(Includes maps) From the moment of his departure from the Philippines in 1942, General MacArthur was determined to return to the islands and restore the freedom of the Philippine people. Capture of the main island of Luzon in 1945 substantially realized this goal. How his armies accomplished it forms the body of the story unfolded in this volume. In some respects the Luzon Campaign repeated the pattern of Japanese conquest three years earlier, although with action on a much larger scale and for a much longer period. Unlike the Japanese conquest, the operations of 1945 involved a fierce month-long battle for Manila, the only such protracted action by U.S. forces in a big city during World War II. It also involved a complicated and costly reduction of three mountain positions into which the Japanese withdrew, in one of which there was still a substantial core of resistance when Japan surrendered. Within the broad scope of this work, covering the intensive operations of two armies for seven months, the author has necessarily concentrated on what is most instructive and significant to the outcome. The clarity, thorough scholarship, and careful mapping of this volume should make it especially useful for the military student, and all who read it will benefit by the author's forthright presentation of this dramatic and climactic story of U.S. Army operations in the Pacific war.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":51033062179089,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":51033064112401,"sku":"NIN9781515082835","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ LIKE_NEW \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":51805076160785,"sku":"GOR014408349","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ WELL_READ \/ SBYB","offer_id":52116756365585,"sku":"CIN1515082830A","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1515082830.jpg?v=1750717210"},{"product_id":"strategy-and-command-book-louis-morton-9781515023258","title":"Strategy and Command","description":null,"brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":51151946940689,"sku":"NIN9781515023258","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1515023257.jpg?v=1751373164"},{"product_id":"guadalcanal-book-john-miller-9781515027737","title":"Guadalcanal","description":null,"brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":51643908227345,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":51643908489489,"sku":"NIN9781515027737","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1515027732.jpg?v=1750717163"}],"url":"https:\/\/www.worldofbooks.com\/en-gb\/collections\/united-states-army-in-world-war-ii-the-war-in-the-pacific-book-series.oembed","provider":"World of Books ","version":"1.0","type":"link"}
