{"title":"Vintage Aviation Ser","description":null,"products":[{"product_id":"king-of-airfighters-book-ira-jones-9781932033991","title":"King of Airfighters","description":"Ira Jones' biography of Britain's top scoring ace of World War I has become the subject of some controversy over the last few years, most notably as it is the source of the claim of 73 \"kills\" for Mannock, thereby making him the number one scoring Allied Ace of the war. Later research has thrown serious doubt on this claim and indeed Mannock himself only claimed 51 kills.   Jones' biography is nevertheless an important account, especially when seen in the context of the time in which it was first written. In particular, the biography really gets into the mind of Mannock, the author having been a flying comrade, and portrays the singular nature of his character and the incredible stresses that these pioneer airfighters were under in the last few months of the war by a man who flew in the thick of it.  Originally published in 1934 by Ivor Nicholson and Watson in London, this aviation classic has been reprinted many times, yet each time has been reproduced from the original 1930s version of the book. This new edition has been entirely reoriginated. Not a word has been changed, but the original type and page layout have been reworked, as has been the format in which the book is presented, to give a beautiful new treatment for this classic of aviation literature.  About the Author Ira Jones enlisted in 1913. When the war began, he transferred to the Royal Flying Corps and joined 10 Squadron as an air mechanic. In July 1915 he was sent to France and by January 1916 he was flying combat missions as an observer. He was then posted to 74 Squadron in early 1918, where he developed a close bond with his flight commander, Mick Mannock. In just three months he scored 37 victories flying the S.E.5a.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ LIKE_NEW \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49505937129745,"sku":"GOR008645005","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49668022534417,"sku":"GOR006852553","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":50269128622353,"sku":"CIN1932033998G","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ VERY_GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":50472990703889,"sku":"CIN1932033998VG","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1932033998.jpg?v=1751156226"},{"product_id":"knight-of-germany-book-johannes-werner-9781935149118","title":"Knight of Germany","description":"The story of the fighter pilot the Red Baron himself sought to emulate . . .  German air ace Oswald Boelcke was a national hero during World War I, the youngest captain in the German air force, decorated with the Pour Ie Merite order while still only a lieutenant and with 40 aerial victories at the time of his death.  He became a pilot shortly before the outbreak of the war, and when he was tragically killed in a flying accident during combat less than two-and-a-half years later not only was his name known all over the world but the whole of Germany mourned his passing. He established his reputation on the Western front first in reconnaissance then in scouts, and, with Immelmann, he became the best known of the German aces. After Immelmann' s death, he was taken off flying and traveled to the Eastern front where he met a young pilot called Manfred von Richthofen. Transferred back to the Western Front in command of Jasta 2, when the new small fighting units were formed, he remembered von Richthofen and chose him as a pilot for his new Staffel. Boelcke was killed in October 1916, the reputation of his unit together with his own, firmly established for ever.  About the Author This comprehensive and absorbing biography was written with the blessing of Boelcke's family. Professor Werner was given access to his letters and other papers, and presents here a rounded and fascinating portrait of a great airman and a remarkable man, who became known as the father of the German Jagdflieger.  This new edition has been completely reoriginated whilst remaining faithful to the language of the time of its original translation from German in the 1930s.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"US \/ VERY_GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":49556990099729,"sku":"CIN1935149113VG","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":50011865088273,"sku":"GOR006871488","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":50473265496337,"sku":"CIN1935149113G","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1935149113.jpg?v=1750900484"},{"product_id":"way-of-the-eagle-book-charles-j-biddle-9781612003900","title":"The Way of the Eagle","description":"The story of a Philadelphia aristocrateducated at Princeton, then Harvardwho refused to wait for the United States to join the Great War but instead joined it himself, as a private, eventually rising to the command of air groups . . .","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":51602409226513,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ VERY_GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":51602410504465,"sku":"CIN1612003907VG","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":52932793991441,"sku":"GOR014659609","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1612003907.jpg?v=1750720414"},{"product_id":"german-war-birds-book-vigilant-9781612001890","title":"German War Birds","description":"This book, originally written in 1931 by Vigilant (the pen name for Claude Sykes), tells the dramatic tales of air combat as fought by the best German pilots of the First World War. Manfred von Richthofen, Max Immelmann, Oswald Boelcke and other famous daredevil flyers are joined by the lesser-known but equally resourceful colleagues such as Rudolph von Eschwege and Hand Shuz, taking part in furious battles in the sky and close escapes on the ground when brought down on the wrong side of the lines. German War Birds contains some of the earliest information to appear after the war about air combat in the Middle East and Russia, as well as the Western Front, and about the significance of observation balloons as targets that were viciously attacked. The author focuses on the heart of the action and recreates the experiences of the airborne war with immediacy, excitement and a vivid turn of phrase, drawing the reader into events as they happen.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":51605603418385,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":51605604073745,"sku":"CIN1612001890G","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":51731964395793,"sku":"GOR011391315","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1612001890.jpg?v=1750926994"}],"url":"https:\/\/www.worldofbooks.com\/en-gb\/collections\/vintage-aviation-ser-book-series.oembed","provider":"World of Books ","version":"1.0","type":"link"}
