Cast in Doubt by Lynne Tillman
?Like Helen I kept a diary when I was young. It was nothing like Helen?s. I tried faithfully to record the events of the day, to describe what I was reading and thinking and to scrutinize and explicate my reactions and so on. She does little or none of this.? It seemed a simple case: a young American woman vanishes on the ancient island of Crete. But when crime writer Horace decides to investigate Helen?s quiet life, the facts he uncovers reveal much more. Cast in Doubt is an authoritative novel of two worlds - an aging expatriate?s love of classical simplicity and the disappearance of a decentered subject amid the fecund possibilities of the hyperreal. Elegant, witty and ironic, Lynne Tillman has written an allegory of our times.
Tillman paints a portrait of a mind, Horace?s mind, that is broad, funny, self-deprecating, blind in spots, occasionally ridiculous, capable of passion and relentlessly entertaining? Patrick McGrath, LA Times Book Review 'There is something so tingly, crisp, and wry about this wholly unexpected novel, it stimulates you just like the brisk, cold Greek wine that delights its charming narrator..Tillman has created a persona and story of great wit, sensitivity, wiliness, and integrity. Delightfully clever and probing -- Donna Seaman * Booklist *
Tillman?s intelligence and sophistication have led her toward a quality I can only call grace. Like Gertrude Stein, John Ashbery and Henry James, this book could be read over and over, each time with deepening delight and appreciation * Peter Straub *
