He spent three years in Japan teaching conversational English and was influenced by the rich tradition of their brush writing. Over the course of forty years he designed more than six hundred books for Tyndale House Publishers near Chicago, where he was a senior art director before retiring in 2012.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eTen of his own books have been published, including \u003ci\u003eDoorposts\u003c\/i\u003e, \u003ci\u003eMessiah\u003c\/i\u003e, and a Bible illustrated in his calligraphy. He is a part-time instructor with College of DuPage and has taught workshops internationally. His work is part of the permanent collection of the Newberry Library. His newest body of work, \u003ci\u003eBound for Glory\u003c\/i\u003e, is based on African American spirituals.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eIn 1995, together with friends, he helped form Masterpiece Ministries, an outreach to high school students in the arts, and he is currently their artistic director.
