Give Peace a Chance by Joan Athey

Give Peace A Chance: John and Yoko's Bed-In For Peace Celebrate the 40th anniversary of the birth of the anthem "Give Peace A Chance."  Go behind the scenes with powerful images, many never seen before, of the Montreal Bed-In For Peace, May 26 to June 1, 1969.  The only photographer to be present the entire eight days, Life photographer Gerry Deiter captured in intimate detail the celebrities, the musicians and the fans who  dropped by.  Recollections by key people who spent time with John and Yoko provide a rare glimpse into what became a moment in history. Read excerpts from the interview that Life never ran and the interesting back story of why many of the photos were never published. Joan Athey (Victoria, BC) is a communications specialist. Her website is www.peaceworksnow.com. Paul McGrath (Toronto, ON) is a screenwriter and former rock critic.
Gerry Deiter (photography) was an American ex-pat, photojournalist and portrait/fashion photographer, teacher, and stringer for Life and Time magazines. He was present for all eight days at the John Lennon and Yoko Ono "bed-in" at Montreal's Queen Elizabeth Hotel in May 1969, at which he took approximately 500 photographs. Deiter passed away in 2005.

Joan Athey (research and compilation) is a communications specialist, having worked for newspapers, advertising agencies, and the CBC for 21 years in public relations, marketing and promotion. Joan resides in Victoria, BC. Her website is www.peaceworksnow.com.

Paul McGrath (editor) was rock critic for The Globe and Mail from 1976 to 1983 and a reporter for CBC TV's The Journal until 1993. He has written dozens of TV scripts and his directing credits include John and Yoko's Year of Peace (CBC, 2000) and Give Peace a Song (CBC, 2005), the latter about the recording of "Give Peace A Chance." Gerry Deiter was a consultant on the project. Paul resides in Toronto.
