Religion in Practice by Swami Prabhavananda

This book, first published in 1968, is a collection of twenty-five lectures by Swami Prabhavananda, the outstanding scholar and translator of Hindu scriptures. They present a direct and pragmatic approach to spiritual life, and a clear guide to Hinduism.

Swami Prabhavananda was born in India in 1893 and died in 1976. Enter the Ramakrisha Order in Kolkata, where they will receive their last mon12stic votes. In 1923, he was sent to America as a Swami assistant in San Francisco's downtown area. After two years in the United States, Vedanta established the Vedanta Center in Portland. In December of 1929, he relocated to Los Angeles, where he founded, in 1930, the largest Vedanta center outside of India: La Sociedad Vedanta de Hollywood, which includes several subcenters, two conventos, and two monasteries.

Authors such as Christopher Isherwood, Frederik Manchester, and Aldous Huxley collaborated on their literary works in a variety of ways. In Kolkata, he joined the Ramakrishna Order and took his final vows. In 1923, he was assigned to the Vedanta Society in San Francisco in the United States of America as an assistant Swami. He founded the Vedanta Society of Portland after two years. He traveled to Los Angeles in 1929 and created The Vedanta Society of Southern California in 1930, which is still the largest Vedanta Society outside of India, with subcenters, two monasteries, and two convents.

The Swami wrote and translated a number of books about Hindu culture and religion. Christopher Isherwood, Frederick Manchester, and Aldous Huxley collaborated on the Swami's literary work in a variety of ways. Swami Prabhavananda died on July 4, 1976, the bicentennial of America's independence, as a tribute to his adoptive homeland.
