He carries out the, vork of redemption by forming the souls of men to the life, von for them by Christ: He had inaugurated the work of redemption by forming Christ Himself in the womb of Mary. All this is adumbrated in the Saviour's parting words to His apostles on the eve of IIis death. He intimated to them that, in a mysterious manner, His own part in their supernatural formation was drawing to a close, and that His place in that work was to pass to another. As the Word of God, that is the Living Expression of what God is, it had been for Him to reveal God and God's mind. He had spent three years developing for them and for others the divine message. He had spoken clearly: men heard His words: but their souls did not lay llold of tIle implications of what He had said to them. The apostles caught the terms but missed the meaning of the sentences which were woven of these terms. Jesus says so explicitly: what is more He implies that it could not but be so. I have yet many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now. But when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will teach YOU the truth. The Holy Ghost will teach you all things and bring all things to your mind, whatsoever I shall have said to you. (St. John XVI. 12, 13, and XIV. 26). Christ's exposition of Divine Truth was but part of a whole process. He revealed: it belonged to Another to carry that supernatural doctrine into the very spirit of men and to cause the intelligence to be illuminated by it. The apprehension of Christ's meaning which was to come only after Christ's exaltation is to be due entirely to the active intervention of the Third Divine Person. Not only does the Holy Spirit enlighten the mind, He, as well, strengthens the will, so that it does not falter in face of the rude discipline of life that becomes of obligation on the apprehension of the Divine Truths. The moral code of Jesus is the logical consequence of the lofty status which He reveals as the condition of man when redeemed. Noblesse oblige. Born of water and the Holy Ghost, the Christian is an adopted child of God and co-heir with Christ. His actions must, of moral necessity, be stamped with the dignity that is his. But no external teaching, no stirring exhortation, will suffice to enable the Christian to play worthily the part that has been assigned to him. There is needed for this a divine energy working from within. The Holy Spirit imparts this divine energy. The Passion generated the exhaustless reservoirs of the divine power. Prophecy is a word of many meanings but it is commonly understood to mean knowledge of the free future, i.e. how God will act in the future, how man will use his free will in the future, and the events resulting from both. It is in this sense that the word is used in this volume. The free future is known only to God and those to whom He chooses to reveal it. Neither the angels (faithful or fallen), the Saints, nor Our Lady herself, know future events contingent upon God or man's use of free will-unless it is made known to them. Because of its unique quality prophecy has always been linked with miracles as a sign from God that a certain revelation is true. Thus our Blessed Lord has made use of prophecy in two ways to prove His Messianic and Divine claims: He showed that He fulfilled all the prophecies of the Old Testament that had foretold His life in detail, while Himself making prophecies that were fulfilled both in His lifetime and generations later. In the centuries since the canon of Sacred Scripture was determined many saints and mystics have claimed the gift of prophecy. Since all such comes under the heading of private revelation it is never binding upon the faithful to believe. No matter how great the saint we have no guarantee that every word found in his or her writings is infallible, and especially when it comes to prophecy. When the cause of a proposed saint is introduced in Rome and the steps leading to canonization begun, the writings of the person are carefully examined to judge their content of holiness, and to see if there is anything in them contrary to church doctrine. If such writings are approved it simply means that the prophecy has nothing in it contrary to faith or morals. The extreme caution one should use in approaching all private revelation is graphically exemplified by the classic instances in which a Saint has been proven wrong in his predictions. Thus St. Vincent Ferrer (1350-1419) went about preaching the coming of the Antichrist and the end of the world in his own generation  Then there too is the ticklish problem of one saint contradicting another in a revelation. Benedict XIVsaid: The recipients of prophecy may be angels, devils, men, women, children, heathens, or gentiles; nor is it neccssary that a man should be gifted with any particular disposition in order to receive the light of prophecy provided his intellect and senses be adapted for making manifest the things which God reveals to him. The thin, dry optimism of sectarian Christianity and of official materialism we see now to be not so much erroneous as unthinkable. We have done, it may be hoped for ever, with If the proofs which proved, and the explanations which explained nothing. A hundred years ago truth seemed a simpler matter to our fathers. They stood on the threshold of the modem industrial world, to them a coming golden age tipped with the brightness of rising science. Exact knowledge and universal education were to make men happy and wise and good. Kings and priests were gone, or, at least, the back of their despotism was broken; these incubi, the causes of all his misery, removed, man, a well-meaning creature, and more than capable of taking care of himself, would begin at last to live, and, in the normal exercise of his natural functions, hitherto artificially strapped down by theological and political tyrants, would find true satisfaction and, consequently, the perfect happiness of his being. But they counted without machine-looms or the law of heredity, of which they derided the theological expression in the doctrine of original sin. The true value of the Revolution did not lie in the supposed sagacity of its political wisdom, and even less in its social results, which we have with us today, but in the indomitable hope and faith which animated some of its greatest illustrations. Early during the sittings of the Council, forty-one of the assembled Fathers devoted six sessions (February 10 to February 22) to an examination of the question; and the report which they drew up occupied the attention of the whole Council during the sittings of April 29 and 30. Many secular authorities have considered the evil effects of television, but what about the spiritual effects of television on children? Secular writes have called for the elimination of television. One group promotes a TV free week each year. And yet Catholics have not weighed in on this important subject. There are several problems of television that are also explored. First of all, television addiction. Television addiction is the only socially acceptable addiction today. You do not find TVs Anonymous in the phone book or online. The second problem is brain washing, which is the manipulation of the thinking of people. Pope Pius XI warned: There is another explanation for the rapid diffusion of the Communistic ideas now seeping into every nation, great and small, advanced and backward, so that no corner of the earth is free from them. This explanation is to be found in a propaganda so truly diabolical that the world has perhaps never witnessed its like before. ... It makes use of pamphlets and reviews, of cinema, theatre, radio (and television), of schools and even universities. And then in 1969 advertisers discovered that television hypnotizes people. In the late 1950's a 'Catholic Handbook' was published with sensible rules for judging television. This is reproduced. The positive side of television is also considered. Saint Bernard says: Some there are who desire knowledge merely for the sake of knowing, and this is shameful curiosity ... Today we are very curious, and yet Saint Thomas calls curiosity a sin. This is explained, as well as the virtue opposite curiosity, studiousness. The prophecy of the Blessed Virgin Mary at Quito Ecuador has been fulfilled: The third meaning of the lamp's going out is that those times the air will be filled with the spirit of impurity which like a deluge of filth will flood the streets, squares and public places. The licentiousness will be such there will be no more virgin souls in the world. (Our Lady of Good Success) And there is a link between some television programming and satanism and a larger link than many realize. The question whether or not we should abstain from television completely is seriously considered. A large section is devoted to church pronouncements on television, radio, movies and the theater. This is followed by information from the Fathers of the Church, the saints and other pious people. A section is devoted to a consideration of good and bad reading, for these principles apply also to television. The power or a good TV program is greater than a good book, and the power of an evil TV program is worse than a bad book. The grace of perseverance is that grace by which we obtain the eternal crown. St. Bernard says that Paradise is promised to those who begin a good life, but is only given to those who persevere.  To beginners a reward is promised, but to him who perseveres it is given;. (De modo bene vivere, s. 6) But this gift of perseverance is, as the Fathers teach, given only to those who ask it. Hence St. Thomas asserts that to enter heaven continual prayer is necessary. And our Redeemer said: We ought always to pray, and not to faint. (Luke XIII, 1) It is because they do not pray for the gift of perseverance that so many miserable sinners, after having obtained pardon, lose again the grace of God. Their sins are forgiven; but because they afterward neglect to ask of God the grace of perseverance, particularly in the time of temptations, they relapse into sin. And although the grace of final perseverance is altogether gratuitous, and cannot be merited by good works; still Suarez teaches that it can be infallibly obtained by prayer: and according to St. Augustine, it may be merited by humble supplication.(De Dono persev. C. 6) This necessity of prayer I have demonstrated at length in another little work, entitled The Great Means of Prayer. This book, though small, has cost me a great deal of labor.
