Can dancers dance for a year and a day without drinking, eating and sleeping? Can pictures be made to speak to their viewers? Can lavender purify the soul? The modern mind regards it as impossible and simply regards reports that these things happened as typical of the `fantastic' Middle Ages. In his new book, however, Harald Kleinschmidt argues that we should not be so swift to dismiss such matters. In this thought-provoking study of the logic of perception and action behind these and other stories, and of the history of the five senses, he argues that modern Western rationalism is peculiar in seeing an opposition between perceivers and the targets of their curiosity, actors and their environments or, in general terms, subject and object. Instead, he shows that whether active or passive, people saw their deeds as correlated and mutually dependent. Using a wide range of textual and pictorial sources, he goeson to demonstrate that the assumption of an opposition between subject and object resulted from fundamental changes of standards of perception and patterns of action that took place during the Middle Ages, resulting in the emergence of a new rationalism. HARALD KLEINSCHMIDT teaches in the College of International Studies at the University of Tsukuba, Japan.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49572175020305,"sku":"GOR012140339","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1843831465.jpg?v=1750725045"},{"product_id":"nemesis-of-power-book-harald-kleinschmidt-9781861890580","title":"The Nemesis of Power","description":"The Nemesis of Power is the first book to look at the history of international relations theories. Many theorists have investigated the nature of power, studying it in its social, political, economic, intellectual and physical contexts in order to define it. Rather than present yet another definition, Harald Kleinschmidt shows how the theorists themselves have perceived and handled the concept of power and how conduct in international relations has been evaluated. Taking a broad look at international relations theories from the Roman Empire to the modern transformation of the European world picture, Kleinschmidt bridges the gap between theory and history by subjecting theory to the logic and method of historical inquiry. Drawing on original sources, he reads international relations theories against their social and cultural contexts, placing an emphasis on the ways in which changes in theory are reflections of a wider pattern of changes in culture.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49577989636369,"sku":"GOR005785897","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ VERY_GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":50765063127313,"sku":"CIN1861890583VG","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1861890583.jpg?v=1751217636"},{"product_id":"charles-v-book-harald-kleinschmidt-9780750924047","title":"Charles V","description":"In his biography of Charles V Harald Kleidschmidt paints a vivid portrait of one of the most intriguing of the great European monarchs.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49586147033361,"sku":"GOR004480244","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49622535504145,"sku":"GOR004560651","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ WELL_READ \/ SBYB","offer_id":50359037362449,"sku":"CIN0750924047A","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":50362133709073,"sku":"CIN0750924047G","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0750924047.jpg?v=1750817607"},{"product_id":"understanding-the-middle-ages-book-harald-kleinschmidt-9780851159492","title":"Understanding the Middle Ages","description":"This radical study traces the transformation of ideas in western Europe during more than one thousand years between the fifth and sixteenth centuries. Kleinschmidt approaches the western European middle ages as a modern anthropologist would approach analysis of a remote culture. His objectives have something in common with Le Goff, as he seeks to identify with medieval society and culture without the encumbrance of later historical attitudes. This radical study traces the transformation of ideas in western Europe during more than one thousand years between the fifth and sixteenth centuries. Its central concern is to interpret and understand changing attitudes towards time, space, the human body, human and social relationships, productivity and distribution, travel, modes of thought, attitudes to the past, ageversus youth, war, faith, and social and political order. Illustrations and narrative work together in this book to present medieval culture as one shaped by the spoken word and the visual image. Drawing extensively from awide range of primary source material, the breadth and originality of Kleinschmidt's study will have an important influence on scholarly perception of the middle ages, as a period of continual change and continually changing attitudes. The goals and motives for moving or staying are changing, diverse, and often difficult to specify. As a result of 19th-century residentialist social and political theories, many scholars generally assume that migration is a pattern of behavior that deviates from the norm and requires a specific motive or reason. This study details the variety of changing historical patterns of migrant behavior by examining migration patterns over 1500 years in Europe and Southeast Asia. Kleinschmidt researches migrants and describes how they viewed themselves. He also includes a look at lawmakers, political decision-makers, and administrators to analyze the changes of their attitudes towards and perceptions of migration. The study places migration within and out of the two regions into a long timeframe to demonstrate the ubiquitous and transience of patterns of migrant behavior. It considers external attitudes and perceptions of migration within the context of the social and political theories of their own time. The two distinct geographic foci of the study allow for discussion of the characteristic features of each region.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52145116971281,"sku":"NLS9780275974176","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9780275974176.jpg?v=1757592118"},{"product_id":"migration-regional-integration-and-human-security-book-harald-kleinschmidt-9780754646464","title":"Migration, Regional Integration and Human Security","description":"This original and timely book is the first to analyze the interconnectedness of migration, regional integration and the new security studies. Exploring the conflict between the actions of transnational migrants and state government policy in a series of theoretical chapters and regional case-studies, the book includes theoretical chapters which look at three key facets of the nation-state: population, territory and government, discussing the ways in which migration, regional integration and new security thinking challenge the accepted role and responsibilities of the state. Regional case-studies are also included which explore the specific challenges faced in regions including Central America, Asia and the Pacific and Central and Eastern Europe. As a book that asks crucial questions about the formulation of migration policies and the consequences of that success of failure, it will be essential reading for students and scholars of migration in sociology, politics and international relations and also for those with professional interests in the area.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":52522431709457,"sku":null,"price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52522432069905,"sku":"NLS9780754646464","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9780754646464.jpg?v=1760577138"},{"product_id":"diskriminierung-durch-vertrag-und-krieg-book-harald-kleinschmidt-9783486717303","title":"Diskriminierung durch Vertrag und Krieg","description":"\u003cp\u003eDie Untersuchung führt über drei Schritte.
