Starting in Berlin in 1909, when the shops were full of ‘modern hats with big brims and ostrich feathers, delicious fruit from southern lands, English jams and all kinds of fish in aspic, poultry, venison, sausages, partridge and pheasant pie’, it reaches its end again in Berlin in 1948, when survival depended on dangerous foraging for fruit or bartering with cigarettes and reels of cotton. Between these two extremes, the correspondence records the intervening years of war and peace, when marriage had led one part of the von Lippe family from Dresden to Cambridge. From operas to zeppelins, potato harvests to elections, the letters describe events as the family experienced them, together with a rich overlay of literary allusions and philosophical reflections. Their home in Helfenberg and its surrounding countryside are a constant theme, giving inspiration and support in times of joy and sorrow. Letters from a brother in the German navy also give a colourful picture of his voyages to the Americas in the decade before the First World War. From an age in which letters were the principal method of communication, this collection presents a vivid picture of social and family life in the shadow of great international events.
This is the story of a unique period in Britain's maritime history, from 1840 to 1935, told through photographs selected from the extensive archive at the National Maritime Museum, Greenwich. Since the first public announcement of the invention in 1839, photography has both reflected and shaped society. Science, government, industry and a growing media quickly recognised its value as a documentary tool, a shaper of opinion and a potentially lucrative profession. Both as art form and social document, the photograph has played a critical role as the primary means of visual expression in the modern age. "Points of View" brings together, for the first time, a selection of images from the British Library's collections, examining the history, diversity and influence of photography from its invention and early years up to the growth of a popular amateur market in the early 20th century. Beginning with the work of William Henry Fox Talbot and other influential pioneers, the book includes many of the most celebrated names in 19th century photography from across the world, including Francis Frith, Felix Teynard, Samuel Bourne and Peter Henry Emerson, as well as numerous lesser known names who made significant contributions to the medium. Organised by subject matter in a broadly chronological arrangement, it asks: who was taking the photograph and why? Section by section, items are presented within their cultural, contexts, exploring some of the major themes of the 19th century, from imperial expansion to industrialisation and the emergence of new scientific and social disciplines in an era of rapid social change. The final sections of the exhibition will examine the ways in which the development of simplified cameras and accessible technology responded to the demands of a developing mass market for photography, which continues up to present day.
From its beginnings in the 1840s up to the mass democratisation of photography as a widespread leisure pursuit, the development of the medium was swept along by a tide of artistic and entrepreneurial activity that gathered pace throughout the 19th century. Such a work is bound to be popular, its advantages come so closely home to every cutter, and we are pleased to record that the efforts of both Author and Publisher have been so fully appreciated. From no other publishing firm has emanated so many works relating to cutting, fitting, and practical tailoring, and so much is the time and attention of cutters devoted to these features of their profession, that the matter of Economy in Cutting is, in many cases, perhaps, comparatively a secondary consideration. Tis true, that in the cutting of a garment, saving a quarter of material is of small importance when compared with its good or bad fit. But where, from experience, or the use of our Tailor and Cutter Reliable Model and Special Patterns, the fit may be pretty well assured, even a quarter of material on each coat cut would very soon bulk to a tolerably large amount. At the present time, when competition runs so high and prices must be cut so fine, it became forcibly impressed upon us that a work might very advantageously be entirely devoted to ECONOMY IN CUTTING. We had little difficulty in selecting an author of thorough practical experience for this work: Mr. Falconer, having devoted special attention to the matter of Economy. The completeness with which Mr. Falconer has done his work, will be found in the fact of its containing no less than thirty-six Plates illustrating different lays, ranging from one to four garments on each lay or illustration. The Tables describe the Plates; giving the garment or garments, their sizes, and the quantities of material from which they can very comfortably be cut.
With over 500 full-color photographs and expert insights provided by leading archaeological authorities, Burmese Design & Architecture is a must-have for serious connoisseurs of architecture, design or Burma itself. Ranging from the monumental pagodas of Pagan (Bagan) to the architectural heritage of Rangoon (Yangon), religious as well as contemporary secular buildings are presented in rich detail. A series of authoritative essays by archaeological experts highlight the major influences and styles found throughout the country, while chapters on Myanmar's rich art and craft traditions provide a wealth of information on Buddha images, lacquerware, painting, ceramics, woodcarving, bronzes, textiles, costumes and much more. Burmese Design & Architecture takes an in-depth look at the entire span of Burmese design, from arts and crafts to both religious and secular architecture.
