He has frequently stated his reluctance to be photographed and he has almost never agreed to be interviewed. Following the publication of the last ten years of his work by Jonathan Cape in the autumn of 2005, the painter has agreed to talk to Sebastian Smee, a writer on art whom he greatly respects, in a series of conversations rather than formal interviews. He wants to talk about painting itself, the demands of his own work and the painters he admires. Two photographers have had access to Freud's studio. The late Bruce Bernard was a friend for many years and the subject of two of Freud's paintings. Bernard was an authority on photography, a great picture editor, and also a very fine photographer. He made a number of studies of Freud at work. Over the last five years in particular, Freud's assistant, the painter David Dawson, has been photographing the artist constantly. The results reveal various stages of works in progress, including paintings of Dawson himself, and the intensity of the activity in this very secret domain. The only precedent to such a document might be David Douglas Duncan's photographs of Picasso at work, but nothing as extensive has been published on such a major painter before.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":49729491501329,"sku":"NGR9780224078719","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":50319122333969,"sku":"GOR003153299","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ LIKE_NEW \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":52650177757457,"sku":"GOR012846099","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0224078712.jpg?v=1750843432"},{"product_id":"lucian-freud-book-lucian-freud-9780224075152","title":"Lucian Freud","description":"At the time of the publication of Lucian Freud, the definitive monograph, by Jonathan Cape in 1996, Freud was already regarded as one of the great portrait painters of all time. His naked portraits had no parallel. His work exists outside the currents of contemporary art in a domain of his own. In the years since that publication his output has only increased. His worldwide reputation continues to be celebrated. In London he has been shown in a major retrospective at the Tate and more recently a number of his new paintings have been shown at the Wallace Collection. This second volume contains the recent paintings, both large and small, together with a number of extraordinary new works on paper. His work shows no sign of diminishing energy. We are witnessing the work of one of the great artists of our time, now in his eighties, as he reaches still further with his scrutiny of human form and flesh. Sebastian Smee, a young Australian writer, has been recognised as one of the most illuminating writers on art and has been close to Freud for several years. His introduction will provide a new analysis of Freud's work and a different voice among those who have made great claims for the significance of Freud's achievement.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":50048579338513,"sku":"GOR005999691","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ LIKE_NEW \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":53007186657553,"sku":"GOR007087984","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0224075152.jpg?v=1751439765"},{"product_id":"lucian-freud-recent-paintings-rare-book-lucian-freud-1709125671abs","title":"Lucian Freud: Recent Paintings","description":"1978. Freud's (1922-2011) portraits-often of the same subjects he painted-manage to encompass his own psyche, the models' responses and our own reactions. My work, he said, is purely autobiographical. It is about myself and my surroundings. In an etching, the subject is scored into a metal plate covered with a wax mixture, which, after immersion in an acid bath, exposes the scorings, which are left as black lines in the finished print. Readers get even closer access to this involved and nontraditional printmaking process, as the volume is supplemented with ten stages of a print from a private collection in England.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":51066860765457,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":51066864206097,"sku":"NIN9788792877437","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":51514980106513,"sku":"NGR9788792877437","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52131787768081,"sku":"NLS9788792877437","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/8792877435.jpg?v=1751222409"},{"product_id":"on-paper-book-lucian-freud-9780224076937","title":"On Paper","description":"Speaking recently about his early years as an artist Lucian Freud claimed, 'I would have thought I did 200 drawings to every painting in those early days. I very much prided myself on my drawing.' Drawing is fundamental to Freud's development as an artist and to how he sees in a way that that it was not, for example, at the foundation of the work of Francis Bacon. Drawing became an important part of Freud's life from the start and a famous sketchbook, The Freud-Schuster Book, dating back to January 1940 when Freud was in Snowdonia with Stephen Spender, has survived. So too do sketches from Freud's life as a merchant seaman on a cargo vessel in the Atlantic in 1941. His then surreal style lent itself to illustrations and his fascination with animals, birds and fish was revealed in the famous line drawings he produced for Nicholas Moore's book of poems, The Glass Tower (1944). On Paper charts the works on paper, including the etchings, over his entire career. It includes the formative early work, the sketches in preparation for painting his masterpiece, Large Interior W11 (after Watteau) (1983), the sketches of the completed painting in the studio and the astonishing later studies of his mother. The book ends with the etchings of recent years. The works on paper are an extraordinary achievement, providing even deeper insights into the work of the greatest figurative artist of our time.
