This book draws on the important collection at the V\u0026amp;A to focus on the heart of the medieval period from 1050 to 1500. The jewellery worn in medieval Europe was important as an indicator of the wearer's social status and wealth, faith and superstition, allegiances and literacy. Royalty and the nobility wore gold, silver or precious gems, the costliest jewellery while humbler ranks wore base metals, copper or pewter, sometimes set with coloured glass, in imitation of gems. This richly illustrated book looks at the jewels themselves and contemporary portraits and sculpture to place the jewellery in its cultural context.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49779464929553,"sku":"GOR007192486","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ LIKE_NEW \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":50589292527889,"sku":"GOR011264440","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/185177582X.jpg?v=1750834841"},{"product_id":"decorative-ironwork-book-marian-campbell-9781851771950","title":"Decorative Ironwork","description":"This volume covers both wrought and cast ironwork, containing comprehensive information on the techniques and processes involved. Exploring topics as diverse as gates and railings, jewellery and lighting, the staircase, the hearth, ecclesiastical ironwork and the use of colour on iron, thematic features highlight some of the designs created to embellish interiors and exteriors through the ages. Illustrations are taken from many major collections, especially those of the Victoria and Albert Museum. Whether destined to decorate a nobleman's hearth or his garden, to light a church or a humble cottage, or to act as personal adornment, decorative iron- and steelwork have fulfilled a multitude of purposes over the centuries. Early craftsmen traditionally invested skill and imagination on wrought iron - produced with hammer and anvil - even for the humblest domestic purposes. Then, with the Industrial Revolution in the 18th century, came the widespread use of cast iron - made by pouring liquid metal into moulds - which brought a new variety of pattern and ornament to the repertoire. Limoges in Aquitaine was the most famous and successful centre of the craft from about 1150 onwards. Its craftsmen created enamels on copper, distinctive for their vivid blues and multi-coloured rosettes. This book investigates the presence of Limoges enamels in medieval England, which was an early market for them, following the marriage of King Henry II in 1152 to Eleanor of Aquitaine, a marriage which brought him Aquitaine, and with it Limoges. This pioneering survey of Limoges enamels in England focuses on what has been found - when and where. Some objects have been excavated by archaeologists, others found by chance or by metal detectorists. The Gazetteer is arranged by county of find-spot, and details the appearance, condition and provenance of surviving pieces. A new and quite separate story emerges from examining the particular damage sustained by numbers of enamels. Many pieces associated with the rituals of the Catholic church show deliberate mutilation. Corpus figures of Christ, once attached to crosses, show the most severe damage, missing hands and feet, or heads and limbs. Where find-spots are concerned, some pieces were found buried deep under church chancel floors or embedded inside church walls. Who might have placed them there and when? This strange pattern of concealment coupled with the troublingly consistent damage seems to provide evidence that these enamels were attacked by Protestant zealots in the 16th century Reformation, following the Tudor royal edicts of the 1530s, which classed many liturgical objects as 'monuments of superstition and idolatry'.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":52155515568401,"sku":"NGR9781803278834","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9781803278834.jpg?v=1757638963"}],"url":"https:\/\/www.worldofbooks.com\/en-ie\/collections\/author-books-by-marian-campbell.oembed","provider":"World of Books ","version":"1.0","type":"link"}
