This complex and fascinating state has also long been in need of a thorough study that cuts through the image of autocracy and military might. Political Power in Pre-Colonial Buganda explores the material basis of Ganda political power, gives us a new understanding of what Ganda power meant in real terms, and relates the story of how the kingdom used the resources at its disposal to meet the challenges that confronted it. Reid further explains how these same challenges ultimately limited Buganda's dominance of the East African great lakes region.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49558776840465,"sku":"GOR008182483","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":51325679599889,"sku":"CIN082141478XG","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/082141478X.jpg?v=1754894095"},{"product_id":"book-of-buildings-book-richard-reid-9780718119034","title":"Book of Buildings","description":null,"brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49580794249489,"sku":"GOR007431647","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ WELL_READ \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49644212355345,"sku":"GOR003567286","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49654968221969,"sku":"GOR003288149","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0718119037.jpg?v=1750816580"},{"product_id":"georgian-house-and-its-details-book-richard-reid-9780900873935","title":"The Georgian House and Its Details","description":null,"brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49633170358545,"sku":"GOR002320990","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49653882880273,"sku":"GOR001994139","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ WELL_READ \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":52865241219345,"sku":"GOR008740635","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0900873930.jpg?v=1751298600"},{"product_id":"shallow-graves-book-richard-reid-9781787383289","title":"Shallow Graves","description":"This is a personal account of the war between Eritrea and Ethiopia, fought between May 1998 and June 2000, as well as of the periods immediately preceding and following the conflict. 'Shallow Graves' traces shifting local perceptions of time, the nation and the region, beginning in the mid-1990s and concluding with the peace agreement signed between the two governments in 2018. Richard Reid is a historian who was based in Eritrea during the war, and who continued to visit both that country and Ethiopia for several years afterwards. This personal perspective offers a more vivid, intimate portrait of the experience of the war than can normally be offered by putatively 'objective' academic accounts. As well as providing first-hand reportage and analysis, Reid problematises the role of the historian--and specifically the foreign historian--as the supposedly impartial observer of events. His eloquent narrative, constructed around conversations and interactions with a range of local witnesses, friends and colleagues, explores the impact of prolonged war and its aftermath--both on private and public memory, and on the nature of history itself.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49648922624273,"sku":"GOR012309555","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":49736951628049,"sku":"NGR9781787383289","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":51050251780369,"sku":"NIN9781787383289","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1787383288.jpg?v=1755498385"},{"product_id":"storyworlds-reception-p1-stage-1-animal-world-stories-4-pack-book-9780435090357","title":"Storyworlds Reception\/P1 Stage 1, Animal World Stories (4 Pack)","description":"Part of the Storyworlds series, this is a pack of the four Stage One Animal World stories about a host of animal characters and their adventures. The different worlds ensure that these are introduced and practised in a variety of contexts. Stage One offers the see-saw approach - introducing only 20 key sight words. The left-hand page of every Stage One story consists of adult text to be read by a teacher, reader or an older child. Richard Reid offers an historical analysis of violent conflict in northeast Africa through the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, incorporating the Ethiopian and Eritrean highlands and their escarpment and lowland peripheries, stretching between the modern Eritrean Red Sea coast and the southern and eastern borderlands of present day Ethiopia. Sudanese and Somali frontiers are also examined insofar as they can be related to ethnic, political, and religious conflict, and the violent state- and empire-building processes which have defined the region since c.1800. Reid argues that this modern warfare is not solely the product of modern political 'failure', but rather has its roots in a network of frontier zones which are both violent and creative. Such borderlands have given rise to markedly militarised political cultures which are rooted in the violence of the nineteenth century, and which in recent decades are manifest in authoritarian systems of government. Reid thus traces the history of Amhara and Tigrayan imperialisms to the nationalist and ethnic revolutions which represented the march of volatile borderlands on the hegemonic centre. He suggests a new interpretation of Ethiopian and Eritrean history, arguing that the key to understanding the region's turbulent present lies in an appreciation of the role of the armed, and politically fertile, frontier in its deeper past.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"US \/ VERY_GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":50148266443025,"sku":"CIN0199211884VG","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ LIKE_NEW \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":50164406878481,"sku":"GOR013877612","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":51089263919377,"sku":"NIN9780199211883","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52516163387665,"sku":"NLS9780199211883","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0199211884.jpg?v=1750843792"},{"product_id":"african-revolution-book-richard-reid-9780691187099","title":"The African Revolution","description":"A panoramic global history of Africa in the age of imperialism","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":50907014299921,"sku":"NGR9780691187099","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":51005686251793,"sku":"NIN9780691187099","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":51503551349009,"sku":"CIN0691187096G","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":52707387408657,"sku":"GOR014590714","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0691187096.jpg?v=1751327338"},{"product_id":"book-of-buildings-book-richard-reid-9780528811036","title":"The Book of Buildings","description":null,"brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":51071936626961,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ VERY_GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":51071938035985,"sku":"CIN0528811037VG","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0528811037.jpg?v=1751197649"},{"product_id":"incident-on-the-termez-road-book-richard-reid-9781844012206","title":"Incident on the Termez Road","description":"The atrocities and betrayals John Ralston has seen in forty years of UN field work - teachers raped, acid thrown in the faces of aid workers, murderous leaders getting rich while children die - have given him a short fuse. That fuse ignites a year into his retirement when his daughter is abducted and mutilated in Uganda by a religious terrorist army. Ralston plans a quiet mission of retribution that will free his daughter and get him close enough to the terrorist leader, Joseph Koni - The Redeemer - to kill him. But before he can move, two big players with their own motives for annihilating Koni and his group - the governments of Iran and the USA - crowd into the action, side by side. Each page crackles with tension as we witness the siege of the terrorist base, follow Ralston as he tracks the escaped Koni along a riverbank, and watch the Iranians hunt down Engineer Nasrullah, Koni's Afghan adviser, the killer of a revered ayatollah. Before these bloody showdowns, author Richard Reid gives readers close-up seats at Taleban assassinations and the horrific branding rites of Koni's army - but also riveting images of beauty and bravery in scenes stretching from Afghanistan to the Congo. Richard Reid worked with the UN and other international organisations for twenty-six years. He now lives in Istanbul, where he teaches university courses in humanities and international relations.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":51299571794193,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":51299573858577,"sku":"NIN9781844012206","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1844012204.jpg?v=1751154769"},{"product_id":"war-in-pre-colonial-eastern-africa-book-richard-reid-9781847016041","title":"War in Pre-colonial Eastern Africa","description":"Of interest to researchers of pre-colonial African history, military history, and anyone involved in modern development and conflict resolution seeking to understand the deeper historical roots of African warfare.
