All the processes of how we co-ordinate our movements, sense our surroundings, react to stimuli and learn and retain information rely on complicated networks of neurons that communicate with each other and their targets. This fast and accurate intercellular signalling most occurs at synapses, specialized processes of neurons that release chemical signals, called neurotransmitters. Neurotransmitters: Frontiers in Molecular Biology will provide the reader with extensive background information on neurotransmitter release. It takes a multidisciplinary approach, but does not assume previous knowledge having basic introductions to most topics. Topics however are covered in enough detail to be of interest to experts in the field. Throughout, emphasis is placed on the rationale by which proteins are assigned specific functions rather than just providing facts about function. The first chapter provides an introduction to the basic features and properties of the synapse and is followed by a chapter detailing several important techniques used to elucidate various aspects of release. Chapters 3 describes many of the biochemical approaches used to identify proteins involved in neurotransmitter release and then chapters 4 and 5 focus on more specific aspects of synaptic transmission: the proteins that transport neurotransmitters and the role of phosphlipids in the process. The next five chapters concentrate on approaches to unravel the function of many proteins in vivo by using toxins, giant squid axons, C. elegans, Drosophila, and mice. The final chapter summarizes current knowledge on endocytosis and recycling. Knowledge of the molecular mechanisms underlying neurotransmitter release has expanded tremendously over the last 10 years. Many of the proteins involved have been isolated, but their roles have yet to be determined. These discoveries will be a major challenge and it is therefore the major aim of this book not only to provide information but also to generate excitement.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49574700482833,"sku":"GOR005457600","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0199637660.jpg?v=1751132961"},{"product_id":"mobile-genetic-elements-book-david-j-sherratt-9780199634040","title":"Mobile Genetic Elements","description":"The chromosomes of living organisms were once thought to be very stable with changes in genetic content infrequent and generally small. We now know all chromosomes contain a multitude of mobile genetic elements that can change position, cause mutation, and proliferate. This book describes how such elements can influence the biology and evolution of all organisms and provides important unifying information on mechanisms of element mobility. Moreover, the book contains invaluable methodologies for using mobile genetic elements as tools in the analysis of gene structure and function.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49608105558289,"sku":"GOR004779478","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0199634041.jpg?v=1751005850"},{"product_id":"mechanisms-of-protein-folding-book-roger-h-pain-9780199633975","title":"Mechanisms of Protein Folding","description":"The past five years have seen a giant leap forward in our understanding of the way proteins fold into their three dimensional, functional conformations. In this volume a group of leading scientists in the field review and assess the experimental evidence that underpins these advances and look for signs of a general picture of how proteins fold. They show how these major conformational changes are leading to new insights into other fields such as membrane translocation and pore formation as well as the clinically important aggregation phenomena. A valuable handbook which will be essential for all fascinated by the power and flexibilty of proteins.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49621642641681,"sku":"GOR002797642","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0199633975.jpg?v=1751290978"},{"product_id":"eukaryotic-dna-replication-book-j-julian-blow-9780199635856","title":"Eukaryotic DNA Replication","description":"A cell's ability to control replication of its DNA is fundamental to its normal development or transformation into a cancerous state. They contribute to a chemical signalling language that regulates development, tissue repair, haemopoiesis, inflammation and the immune response. Potent cytokine polypepides have pleiotropic activities and functional redundancy. They act in a complex network where one cytokine can influence the production of, and response to, many other cytokines. In the past five years, this bewildering array of more than 100 effector molecules and associated cell surface receptors has been simplified by study of cytokine and cytokine receptor structure; elucidation of convergent intracellular signalling pathways; and molecular genetics, and targeted gene disruption to 'knock-out' production of individual cytokines in mice. It is also now clear that the pathophysiology of infectious, autoimmune and malignant disease can be partially explained by the induction of cytokines and the subsequent cellular response. Viral homologues exist for many cytokines and receptors and genetic variations in cytokine production may influence response to pathogenic stimuli. Cytokine and cytokine antagonists have shown therapeutic potential in a number of chronic and acute diseases. The Cytokine Network: Frontiers in Molecular Biology is not a survey of individual cytokines, but guides the reader through the latest research on the cytokine network as a whole covering genomics, signalling pathways, control of the immune response, and therapeutics.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49663242436881,"sku":"GOR005825147","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0199637024.jpg?v=1751070609"},{"product_id":"molecular-immunology-book-hames-9780199633784","title":"Molecular Immunology","description":"Like other volumes in the Frontiers in Molecular Biology series, this book presents an up-to-date picture of current research topics in a key area.
