Their objective, under 'Operation Sheepskin', was to invade the small Caribbean island of Anguilla through both an amphibious and airborne assault. The operation aimed to crush a two-year island rebellion against the postcolonial government of Robert Bradshaw on St Kitts. Recent military intelligence reports had been patchy as to the level of resistance to be expected from the islanders; however, the number of firearms estimated to be on the island and the recent hostility experienced by British diplomats, suggested that the troops were about to encounter a storm of bullets as they hit the beaches.

Strangely enough, as the squaddies splashed ashore, they were met by the thunderous silence of an empty beach apart from the clicks of journalists' cameras. To the surprise of all involved, the occupation of the island was subsequently achieved without bloodshed. Whilst British policymakers soon questioned whether they had misread the situation in Anguilla and overreacted militarily, Fleet Street and the international media responded with ridicule. The operation was presented as a farce and emblematic of Britain's declining world role since the end of empire. This satirical interpretation has remained the abiding memory, if the invasion is remembered at all, within British public consciousness. Despite the military anti-climax however, this does not detract from the considerable importance of Operation Sheepskin for understanding the complexities of decolonization in the Caribbean; Britain's military performance following the retreat from 'East of Suez' and decision-making within the Labour government of Prime Minister Harold Wilson.

This book offers an in-depth military and political reappraisal of the Anguilla Crisis, exploring the countdown to military intervention, its tactical implementation and its legacy. In doing so, the book evaluates the reasons for the British government's apparent overreaction to the crisis, the scandal that rocked Whitehall as Operation Sheepskin was being arranged and finally, the series of operational blunders which emerged as the operation was carried out. Constituting a neglected and unusual chapter of post-war British military history, the book will appeal to those readers interested in the wars of decolonization, British politics in the 1960s and the history of the Caribbean at the end of empire.
From 1954 Paraguay was held in the grip of a Right-wing dictatorship under General Alfredo Stroessner. But the war over the Putumayo area became the baptism of fire for the Peruvian and Colombian air forces, leading, in the second case, to the development of its military aviation, which was almost nonexistent in 1932. The Azules proposed a limited integration of Peronism into Argentine political life and armed forces with a high degree of autonomy, though unified through a strict chain of command. The Colorados equated Peronism with Communism, advocating the complete eradication of both, and were characterized by a greater politicization of the military and deliberative inner workings. By 1962, each wing was fighting to gain control over the entire Armed Forces and thus be in a position to exercise guardianship over the government and set the course that national policy should follow. In March 1981, the government ran a large sweep operation along the border with Honduras in the north, accompanied by the use of scorched earth tactics and indiscriminate killing of anyone captured. A second offensive, launched in November 1981, was conducted in a similar fashion, and resulted in the massacre of hundreds of civilians by government troops. Under pressure, the insurgency of the Farabundo Marti National Liberation Front (FMLN) called for a peace settlement and the establishment of a government of broad participation. Elections in 1982 were interrupted by a campaign of assassinations by right-wing paramilitaries, which prompted the FMLN to return to arms and hit back with a vicious campaign of attacks on military and economic targets - including Ilopango Air Base, which was heavily hit in February. A new interim government failed to introduce any kind of substantive changes and the armed forces became involved in additional atrocities against human rights activists and union leaders: the result was the next phase of the war that was to last for another two years. In 1984, Christian Democrat Jos Napole n Duarte was elected president amid another wave of repression and violence, further reinforced through 1985, despite attempts to reform the armed- and security forces. Nevertheless, by 1986, the notorious 'death squads' were kidnapping and assassinating any opponents they could lay their hands upon. The FMLN thus continued striking back, culminating in the 'final offensive' of 1989, carried out with the aim of unseating a government elected in the obviously fixed elections of the previous year. It was only at that point in time that the government - under severe pressure from the USA - brought the war to an end. After 10 years of merciless fighting that uprooted over one million people and destroyed over 40 percent of homes in El Salvador, the war was over, even though death squads were to assassinate opposition leaders for years afterwards.

El Salvador Volume 2: Conflagration 1984-1992 is the first inclusive and incisive military history of this incredibly vicious, merciless war: one of two major conflicts fought in Central America in the 1980s within the context of the Cold War. On the contrary, skills and knowledge about antisubmarine warfare on the high seas - a discipline that dominated much of the World War II, and once used to be the reason for existence of large fleets of the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO) and of the Warsaw Pact - appear nearly extinct. Indeed, it seems that no armed conflicts involving this form of naval warfare have been fought for a significant time.

As so often, the reality is entirely different. Submarine and antisubmarine warfare remain one of most sophisticated forms of armed conflicts to this day. Unsurprisingly, considering the amount of high-technology equipment necessary for their conduct, they are shrouded behind a thick veil of secrecy.

This is why the operations of the sole Argentinean aircraft carrier - ARA 25 de Mayo - during the much-publicized war in the South Atlantic of 1982 remain largely unknown until this very day. It is well-known that the United Kingdom deployed the largest task force its Royal Navy had assembled since the Korean War over 12,000 kilometers away from home. It is well-known that the operations of this task force proved decisive for the outcome of the war: it not only brought the air power that established itself in control of the air space over the battlefield, but also hauled all the troops and supplies necessary to recover the islands that were the core of the dispute. However, the impression created very early during this conflict - and largely maintained until today - is that ARA 25 de Mayo and other elements of the accompanying Task Force 79 of the Argentinean Navy were forced into a hurried withdrawal by the sheer presence of multiple nuclear attack submarines of the Royal Navy.

Based on years of research, including extensive investigation into naval operations of both sides of the conflict, A Carrier at Risk is a vibrant and lucid account of a week-long cat-and-mouse game between antisubmarine warfare specialists on board ARA 25 de Mayo, and multiple nuclear attack submarines of the Royal Navy: an entirely unknown, yet crucial aspect of the South Atlantic War.

Illustrated by over 100 photographs, maps, and color profiles, this volume closes one of the major gaps - though also a crucially important affair - in the coverage of this conflict.
In the decades before Mexico joined the allies during the Second World War, Mexican military aviation saw a rapid growth and intense involvement in multiple rebellions, internal strife, and in operations against armed banditry.

Aviation was introduced to military service in Mexico during the Revolutionary Period of 1910-1920, culminating in the bloody showdown between the subsequent president Don Venustiano Carranza and General Victoriano Huerta in 1913. The 1992 Coup detat Attempts in Venezuela Volume 2
Rich in oil, Venezuela should, in theory, have been one of the wealthiest nations in Latin America -- if not the world. Yet by the 1980s, the collapse in oil prices plunged the country into economic crisis. Widespread corruption, falling living standards, and growing inequality ignited public unrest, culminating in the Caracazo riots of 1989. The violent repression that followed, with hundreds killed by security forces, shocked the nation and sowed the seeds of rebellion within the armed forces. Among the disillusioned was a group of junior officers inspired by reform and led by a charismatic figure -- Lieutenant Colonel Hugo Ch vez.

In 1992, Venezuela was convulsed by not one but two military coups, both aimed at unseating President Carlos Andr s P rez. The first, in February, was a coordinated but ultimately unsuccessful uprising led by Ch vez's MBR-200 movement. It saw intense urban fighting, street battles between army units, and aircraft attacking targets in the capital. Volume 1 of For Now and Forever charted the build-up to that moment: the historical roots of military involvement in Venezuelan politics, the evolution of the armed forces, and the initial outbreak of the February coup attempt.

This second volume picks up the story in the aftermath of that failed rebellion. While Ch vez was imprisoned and became a national symbol of defiance, the embers of insurrection still glowed. Just nine months later, on 27 November 1992, a second, far more audacious coup attempt erupted--this time involving a much larger segment of the armed forces, including significant elements of the air force. Mirage fighters, OV-10 Broncos, and Alouette helicopters took to the skies, launching air strikes against loyalist bases and government targets. For the first time in modern Latin American history, a full-scale aerial civil war briefly broke out above a major capital city.

For Now and Forever Volume 2 provides a detailed and gripping account of this extraordinary moment in Venezuelan and Latin American history. Drawing on official records, rare photographs, and first-hand testimony, author Jos Daniel Fern ndez Dugarte reconstructs the dramatic events of the November coup attempt, its planning, execution, and eventual collapse. The book vividly portrays the chaos that unfolded across military bases and urban centres, and the consequences that followed for both the coup plotters and the Venezuelan state.

Lavishly illustrated throughout with previously unpublished photographs, specially commissioned colour artworks, detailed maps, and appendices profiling the combat aircraft of the Venezuelan Air Force, this volume offers a comprehensive and visually striking portrayal of a failed revolution and its legacy. It is a vital continuation of the story begun in Volume 1 and a crucial reference for students of modern military history, Latin American politics, and revolutionary movements.

Cuban Military Aviation Volume 1: Organisation and Development of the Cuban Army Air Corps, 1913-1952 presents the first comprehensive English-language study of the origins and evolution of military aviation in Cuba. Drawing on rare photographs, extensive archival research, and original artwork, this volume traces the creation, structure, and operations of the Cuerpo de Aviaci n del Ej rcito de Cuba (CAEC) from its founding in 1913 through to its transformation into the Fuerza A rea del Ej rcito de Cuba in 1952.

Cuba was a pioneer in Latin American military aviation. Just over a decade after gaining independence from Spain, the nation had already established an air arm--well before many of its regional peers. Early Cuban aviators trained in the United States during the First World War, and a Cuban air squadron was nearly dispatched to the Western Front before the Armistice intervened. In the interwar years, the CAEC gradually expanded its aircraft inventory and institutional capabilities, including goodwill flights across Central America and the Caribbean, and active involvement in internal conflicts such as the Gibara Expedition.

Cuban military aviation came of age during the Second World War. Though not a frontline combatant, Cuba supported the Allied cause and benefitted from the US Lend-Lease programme, acquiring modern aircraft such as the AT-6 Texan and B-25 Mitchell, and receiving American training for its pilots and mechanics. In the post-war period, further aid followed through initiatives such as the American Republics Program (ARP) and the Mutual Defense Assistance Program (MDAP), which helped the CAEC maintain and modernise its forces.

This volume explores the development of aviation infrastructure, training institutions, and operational doctrine within the CAEC. It also covers key episodes such as the Cayo Confites expedition, the establishment of Cuban Naval Aviation in the 1930s, and the acquisition of increasingly capable aircraft for reconnaissance, transport, and combat roles during the 1940s and early 1950s. The book additionally offers a concise biographical portrait of Fulgencio Batista, whose political influence shaped much of Cuba's military policy during this period.

A detailed appendix lists all aircraft types operated by the CAEC and Naval Aviation between 1913 and 1952, and the volume is extensively illustrated with period photographs and specially commissioned full-colour profiles that bring the story of Cuban aviation to life.

This is the first in a two-part series, with a companion volume examining the transition from the CAEC to the Cuban Air Force and its subsequent transformation in the revolutionary period. Cuban Military Aviation Volume 1 is an essential resource for scholars, aviation historians, and readers interested in Latin American military development in the 20th century.

One summer.
