The political, social, and cultural changes of the last decade have allowed Polish poets to cast off these burdens, and focus instead on individual expression and varied aesthetic movements. Carnivorous Boy Carnivorous Bird focuses on the core group of this movement—poets born between 1958 and 1969.  \". . . in a constant confusion of mystification and authenticity, distance and directness, representational skepticism and mimetic euphoria, game-playing and honesty, the poets presented here perform their informal, singular duties towards language and the human condition.\"—from the introduction by Marcin Baran","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"US \/ GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":50366737318161,"sku":"CIN0939010720G","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0939010720.jpg?v=1751171851"},{"product_id":"black-square-book-tadeusz-dabrowski-9780981552163","title":"Black Square","description":"When in 2006 Tadeusz Rózewicz won the Polish Culture Foundation’s Golden Sceptre lifetime achievement award, he presented the Little Sceptre—awarded by the major winner to his favorite younger artist—to Tadeusz Dabrowski, with the words: “One day he’ll swap his little sceptre for a big one.”    A thirty-year-old boy solemnly convinced of his own immortality.  A boy with blue-and-white skin like the marble of heaven.  The boy who falls on me like the tombstone of night. Like dreamless sleep.  Someone who promptly appears and disappears like a black square on a black background.  Tadeusz Dabrowski was born in northern Poland in 1979. From his first volume, published in 1999, he has been critically acclaimed for poetry that combines a tone of metaphysical meditation with the theme of love. His poems are like snapshots taken by a sensitive camera that captures moments filled with the “caring absence” of God and intimacy with the woman the poet loves. Here we find gravity laced with humor and sublimity mixed with pleasure. So far Dabrowski has published five volumes of poetry in his native Poland, which have won him numerous awards. His work has appeared in translation in thirteen European languages. English translations of his poems by Antonia Lloyd-Jones have been published in several leading literary journals, including Agni, American Poetry Review, and Tin House. Black Square is his first collection to be published in English.  Antonia Lloyd-Jones is a translator of Polish literature. In 2008 she won the Found in Translation Award for her translation of The Last Supper, a novel by Pawel Huelle. Her other translations of fiction include works by Jaroslaw Iwaszkiewicz and Olga Tokarczuk. Her translations of poetry by Jacek Dehnel appeared in a recent anthology, Six Polish Poets, published by Arc Publications.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"US \/ GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":50376644722961,"sku":"CIN0981552161G","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ VERY_GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":51333007573265,"sku":"CIN0981552161VG","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0981552161.jpg?v=1751045822"},{"product_id":"aperture-book-jacek-dehnel-9781938890949","title":"Aperture","description":"The poet brings his fascination with formal poetry to 21st century subjects — internet culture, science, postmodern architecture — even as he also explores intimacy, gay love, and emotionally-charged objects in this bilingual (Polish\/English) collection. Krystyna Dąbrowska is an award-winning younger Polish poet whose poems convey a profound curiosity about the world, not only expressed by the lyric speaker but by those inside the poems — two owls guarding their nest, or a dog at the beach, or blind visitors in a museum. Her work and use of language so captivated the three translators that they decided to collaborate on this collection together. Many poems address daily life; others delve into the Holocaust, family relationships, and travels — to Cairo, Georgia, Jerusalem. Her poems insistently return to northern Poland cataloguing the sea, fog, wind, lakes, rivers, woods, fields, and crows. “My first homeland is a post-German landscape,” she acknowledges, “with wild rose bushes, stone stables, metal window fittings, red roofs.”  Kielar does not comment on Poland’s past or present. Like so many other young Polish poets who started to publish after 1989, she no longer needs to: confronting history and the state has finally become an aesthetic choice rather than a poet’s moral obligation. When Kielar speaks about her obligation as a poet, she speaks about bringing home what we tend to call reality, love, death. Always aware of the risk involved in naming, she strives to bring out of darkness words and their meanings.  Marzanna Bogumila Kielar (b.1963, Goldap), a graduate in philosophy from Warsaw University, works at the College of Special Needs Education in Warsaw and co-operates with the literary magazine Krasnogruda. She has published two collections of poetry and has received the Kazimiera Illakowiczówna Prize for the best debut of the year, and the Koscielski Foundation Prize; she has been nominated for the NIKE Prize.  Elzbieta Wójcik-Leese teaches translation and contemporary literature in English at the Jagiellonian University in Kraków. She co-edits Przekladaniec, a journal of literary translation; her translations of contemporary Polish poets have appeared in numerous journals, and the Zephyr anthology Carnivorous Boy Carnivorous Bird.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"US \/ VERY_GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":51322808631569,"sku":"CIN0939010860VG","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":51330783412497,"sku":"CIN0939010860G","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52740529815825,"sku":"NIN9780939010868","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0939010860.jpg?v=1751234701"},{"product_id":"peregrinary-book-eugeniusz-tkaczyszyn-dycki-9780939010974","title":"Peregrinary","description":"The first English collection of the prize-winning contemporary Polish poet.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52740530405649,"sku":"NIN9780939010974","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9780939010974.jpg?v=1763483858"}],"url":"https:\/\/www.worldofbooks.com\/en-ie\/collections\/new-polish-writing-book-series.oembed","provider":"World of Books ","version":"1.0","type":"link"}
