It answers the urgent need for a general presentation of the body of experimental and theoretical results presently available in this challenging domain. Some of the fast developing applications of lanthanide and actinide materials are mentioned. Materials containing atoms with an open f shell have electronic and crystalline properties that are controlled by the localized or delocalized character of the f electrons. This book gives a theoretical discussion of the various spectroscopic methods that shed light on the character of the f electrons and on the connection between their localization and the properties of these materials. Part 1 covers the characteristics of the f electrons in atoms and solids and includes a discussion of the properties of lanthanides and actinides in connection with the f electrons. Part 2 describes the various spectroscopic methods that are used to establish the electronic distributions and energies of the states. Examples involve the determination of f electron distributions by high energy spectroscopy methods with separate treatment of the valence and core electrons. Part 3 concentrates on the theoretical treatment of electronic transitions involving f electrons and simulations of the lanthanide spectra, including comparison with the available experimental data. Part 4 discusses the localized or delocalized character of the f electrons in actinides and their compounds, including comparison (analogies \u0026amp; differences) between the 4f and 5f electron materials. This monograph should be of great value for researchers, academics and engineers working in the fields of high energy spectroscopy, electronic and nuclear science and technology, as well as materials involving rare earths and radio-elements.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52124032925969,"sku":"NLS9789402413151","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9789402413151.jpg?v=1757455023"},{"product_id":"hybrid-methods-of-molecular-modeling-book-andrei-tchougreff-9781402081880","title":"Hybrid Methods of Molecular Modeling","description":"This is a self-contained advanced review offering step by step derivation of the consistent theoretical picture of hybrid modeling methods and the thorough analysis of the concepts and current practical methods of hybrid modeling based on this theory.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52125139239185,"sku":"NLS9781402081880","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":53558397698321,"sku":"NIN9781402081880","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9781402081880.jpg?v=1757462520"},{"product_id":"theoretical-chemistry-and-physics-of-heavy-and-superheavy-elements-book-u-kaldor-9781402013713","title":"Theoretical Chemistry and Physics of Heavy and Superheavy Elements","description":"Quantum mechanics provides the fundamental theoretical apparatus for describing the structure and properties of atoms and molecules in terms of the behaviour of their fundamental components, electrons and nudeL For heavy atoms and molecules containing them, the electrons can move at speeds which represent a substantial fraction of the speed of light, and thus relativity must be taken into account. Relativistic quantum mechanics therefore provides the basic formalism for calculating the properties of heavy-atom systems. The purpose of this book is to provide a detailed description of the application of relativistic quantum mechanics to the many-body prob- lem in the theoretical chemistry and physics of heavy and superheavy elements. Recent years have witnessed a continued and growing interest in relativistic quantum chemical methods and the associated computa- tional algorithms which facilitate their application. This interest is fu- elled by the need to develop robust, yet efficient theoretical approaches, together with efficient algorithms, which can be applied to atoms in the lower part of the Periodic Table and, more particularly, molecules and molecular entities containing such atoms. Such relativistic theories and computational algorithms are an essential ingredient for the description of heavy element chemistry, becoming even more important in the case of superheavy elements. They are destined to become an indispensable tool in the quantum chemist's armoury. Indeed, since relativity influences the structure of every atom in the Periodic Table, relativistic molecular structure methods may replace in many applications the non-relativistic techniques widely used in contemporary research.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52128608583953,"sku":"NLS9781402013713","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9781402013713.jpg?v=1757492352"},{"product_id":"epr-of-free-radicals-in-solids-ii-book-anders-lund-9789400793507","title":"EPR of Free Radicals in Solids II","description":"EPR of Free Radicals in Solids: Trends in Methods and Applications, 2nd ed. presents a critical two volume review of the methods and applications of EPR (ESR) for the study of free radical processes in solids. A brief perusal of physical chemistry journals in the early to mid 1980's will find a large number of theor- ical papers devoted to 3-body gas phase chemical reaction dynamics. The recent history of theoretical chemistry has seen an explosion of progress in the devel- ment of methods to study similar properties of systems with Avogadro's number of particles. While the physical properties of condensed phase systems have long been principle targets of statistical mechanics, microscopic dynamic theories that start from detailed interaction potentials and build to first principles predictions of properties are now maturing at an extraordinary rate. The techniques in use range from classical studies of new Generalized Langevin Equations, semicl- sical studies for non-adiabatic chemical reactions in condensed phase, mixed quantum classical studies of biological systems, to fully quantum studies of m- els of condensed phase environments. These techniques have become sufficiently sophisticated, that theoretical prediction of behavior in actual condensed phase environments is now possible. and in some cases, theory is driving development in experiment. The authors and chapters in this book have been chosen to represent a wide variety in the current approaches to the theoretical chemistry of condensed phase systems. I have attempted a number of groupings of the chapters, but the - versity of the work always seems to frustrate entirely consistent grouping.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":52344158945553,"sku":null,"price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52344162582801,"sku":"NLS9781402004100","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9781402004100.jpg?v=1758174382"},{"product_id":"epr-of-free-radicals-in-solids-i-book-anders-lund-9789401785273","title":"EPR of Free Radicals in Solids I","description":"EPR of Free Radicals in Solids: Trends in Methods and Applications, 2nd ed.  presents a critical two volume review of the methods and applications of EPR (ESR) for the study of free radical processes in solids. The chapters dealing with quantum chemistry methods for the theoretical interpretation of hyperfine coupling tensors and g-tensors have been much extended in this edition and a new chapter on the calculation of zero-field splitting tensors has been added. This new edition is a valuable resource to experimentalists and theoreticians in research involving free radicals, as well as for students of advanced courses in physical chemistry, chemical physics, materials science, biophysics, biochemistry and related fields. When writing such a book, one is faced with numerous decisions, e. g. : Which topics should be included? What should be assumed about the readers' prior knowledge? How should balance be achieved between numerical theory and physical application? This book is not elementary. The reader should have a background in qu- tum physics and computing. On the other way the topics discussed are not addressed to the specialist. This work bridges hopefully the gap between - vanced students, graduates and researchers looking for computational ideas beyond their fence and the specialist working on a special topic. Many imp- tant topics and applications are not considered in this book. The selection is of course a personal one and by no way exhaustive and the material presented obviously reflects my own interest. What is Computational Physics? During the past two decades computational physics became the third fun- mental physical discipline. Like the 'traditional partners' experimental physics and theoretical physics, computational physics is not restricted to a special area, e. g. , atomic physics or solid state physics. Computational physics is a meth- ical ansatz useful in all subareas and not necessarily restricted to physics. Of course this methods are related to computational aspects, which means nume- cal and algebraic methods, but also the interpretation and visualization of huge amounts of data.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":52424943042833,"sku":null,"price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52424943698193,"sku":"NLS9781402002151","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9781402002151.jpg?v=1759153383"},{"product_id":"hybrid-methods-of-molecular-modeling-book-andrei-tchougreff-9789048177998","title":"Hybrid Methods of Molecular Modeling","description":"Hybrid Methods of Molecular Modeling is a self-contained advanced review offering step by step derivation of the consistent theoretical picture of hybrid modeling methods and the thorough analysis of the concepts and current practical methods of hybrid modeling based on this theory. Indeed, since relativity influences the structure of every atom in the Periodic Table, relativistic molecular structure methods may replace in many applications the non-relativistic techniques widely used in contemporary research.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":52475896561937,"sku":null,"price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52475897610513,"sku":"NLS9789048163137","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9789048163137.jpg?v=1759843229"},{"product_id":"explicitly-correlated-wave-functions-in-chemistry-and-physics-book-j-rychlewski-9789048164486","title":"Explicitly Correlated Wave Functions in Chemistry and Physics","description":"Explicitly Correlated Wave Functions in Chemistry and Physics is the first book devoted entirely to explicitly correlated wave functions and their theory and applications in chemistry and molecular and atomic physics. This monograph should be of great value for researchers, academics and engineers working in the fields of high energy spectroscopy, electronic and nuclear science and technology, as well as materials involving rare earths and radio-elements.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":52584612004113,"sku":null,"price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52584612593937,"sku":"NLS9789048128785","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9789048128785.jpg?v=1761050583"},{"product_id":"frontiers-in-quantum-systems-in-chemistry-and-physics-book-pj-grout-9781402087066","title":"Frontiers in Quantum Systems in Chemistry and Physics","description":"In this volume we have collected some of the contributions made to the Twelfth European Workshop on Quantum Systems in Chemistry and Physics (QSCP-XI) in 2007. The workshop was held at Royal Holloway College, the most westerly campusof the University of London, and situated just a stone's throw from Windsor Great Park. The workshop, which ran from 30 August to 5 September, continued the series that was established by Roy McWeeny in April 1996 with a meeting held at San Miniato, near Pisa. The purpose of the QSCP workshops is to bring together, in an informal atmosphere and with the aim of fostering collaboration, those chemists and physicists who share a common ?eld of interest in the theory of the quantum many-body problem. Quantum mechanics provides a theoretical foundation for our understandingof the structure, propertiesanddynamicsof atoms, moleculesandthe solid state, in terms of their component particles: electrons and nuclei. The study of 'Quantum Systems in Chemistry and Physics' therefore underpins many of the emerging?elds in twenty-?rstcenturyscience andtechnology: nanostructure, smart materials, drug design - to name but a few. Members of the workshop were keen to discuss their research and engage in collaboration centred upon the development of fundamental and innovative theory which would lead to the exploration of new concepts. The proceedings of all of the workshops, which have been held annually since 1996, have been published both to disseminate the latest developments within the wider community and to stimulate further collaboration.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52588545671441,"sku":"NLS9781402087066","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9781402087066.jpg?v=1761058311"},{"product_id":"topics-in-the-theory-of-chemical-and-physical-systems-book-jean-maruani-9781402054594","title":"Topics in the Theory of Chemical and Physical Systems","description":"This volume contains a representative selection of papers presented at the Tenth European Workshop on Quantum Systems in Chemistry and Physics (QSCP-X), held at Be t al-Hikma, seat of the Acad mie Tunisienne des Sciences, des Arts et des Lettres, in Carthage, Tunisia, September 1-7, 2005. Of course this methods are related to computational aspects, which means nume- cal and algebraic methods, but also the interpretation and visualization of huge amounts of data.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":52662698180881,"sku":null,"price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52662699491601,"sku":"NLS9789048159147","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9789048159147.jpg?v=1762270122"},{"product_id":"epr-of-free-radicals-in-solids-i-book-anders-lund-9789400748927","title":"EPR of Free Radicals in Solids I","description":"EPR of Free Radicals in Solids I focuses on the trends in experimental and theoretical methods to extract structural and dynamical properties of radicals and spin probes in solid matrices by continuous wave (CW) and pulsed techniques.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":52662771646737,"sku":null,"price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52662772662545,"sku":"NLS9789400748927","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9789400748927.jpg?v=1762270306"},{"product_id":"vibronic-interactions-and-the-jahn-teller-effect-book-mihail-atanasov-9789400723832","title":"Vibronic Interactions and the Jahn-Teller Effect","description":"The concepts of the Jahn-Teller effect and vibronic coupling are being applied to more and more systems in both chemistry and physics. Aspects of structural chemistry such as the distortion of the nuclear framework to a lower-symmetry conformation have received an increasing attention, as well as the dynamics on the coupled potential energy surfaces. The Jahn-Teller intersections are now recognized as prototype cases of conical intersections where the nuclear motion is known to be inherently nonadiabatic in nature and interchanges freely between the different potential energy surfaces. In the condensed phase especially, the significance of the Jahn-Teller effect has been increasingly appreciated, following the discovery of superconductivity in the fullerides and of very large (\"colossal\") magnetoresistance in the manganite perovskites. Indeed, these materials are particularly challenging since the Jahn-Teller interaction competes with electronic correlation effects.    Vibronic Interactions and the Jahn-Teller Effect: Theory and Applications provides an in-depth discussion of the Jahn-Teller effect and vibronic interactions as reflected by the contributions presented at the XX International Conference on the Jahn-Teller effect, Fribourg, Switzerland, 2010. The following topics have been treated in a clear and concise way: • Complex topologies of Jahn-Teller effect and conical intersections • Multi-state vibronic interactions on strongly coupled potential energy surfaces • Interplay of vibronic and spin-orbit coupling • Strain in Jahn-Teller systems and cooperative Jahn-Teller effect • Orbital ordering and its relation to ferromagnetism, ferroelectricity and molecular magnets • The Jahn-Teller effect in icosahedral systems • The Jahn-Teller effect and high temperature superconductivity This book is of interest to a wide audience including academic andindustrial theoretical and experimental physicists, chemists, spectroscopists, and crystallographers.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":52663298752785,"sku":null,"price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52663299703057,"sku":"NLS9789400723832","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9789400723832.jpg?v=1762271659"},{"product_id":"advances-in-quantum-methods-and-applications-in-chemistry-physics-and-biology-book-matti-hotokka-9783319015286","title":"Advances in Quantum Methods and Applications in Chemistry, Physics, and Biology","description":"Advances in Quantum Methods and Applications in Chemistry, Physics, and Biology includes peer-reviewed contributions based on carefully selected presentations given at the 17th International Workshop on Quantum Systems in Chemistry, Physics, and Biology.
