Discussing each sense in turn – seeing, hearing, touch, smell, and taste – Le Breton has written a truly monumental work, vast in scope and deeply engaging in style. Among other pioneering moves, he gives equal attention to light and darkness, sound and silence, and his disputation of taste explores aspects of disgust and revulsion. Part phenomenological, part historical, this is above all a cultural account of perception, which returns the body and the senses to the center of social life. Le Breton is the leading authority on the anthropology of the body and the senses in French academia. With a repute comparable to the late Pierre Bourdieu, his 30+ books have been translated into numerous languages. This is the first of his works to be made available in English. This sensuously nuanced translation of La Saveur du monde is accompanied by a spicy preface from series editor David Howes, who introduces Le Breton's work to an English-speaking audience and highlights its implications for the disciplines of anthropology, sociology, and the cross-disciplinary field of sensory studies.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"US \/ GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":50031931326737,"sku":"CIN1474246028G","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1474246028.jpg?v=1751273186"},{"product_id":"ritual-performance-and-the-senses-book-michael-bull-9781350001510","title":"Ritual, Performance and the Senses","description":"Ritual has long been a central concept in anthropological theories of religious transmission. Eight chapters by scholars from each of these sub-disciplines investigate different aspects of embodied religious practice, ranging from philosophical discussions of belief to explorations of the biological processes taking place in the brain itself. These are just a few of the ways that locative tourism applications seek to augment the urban experience. This book explores the universe of locative tourism applications. It uses multi-sited sensory ethnography with diverse apps in 12 cities around the world to interrogate how these applications layer (often branded) maps of meaning over the urban environment, and exposes what their use – at the embodied intersection of physical and digital space – can tell us about the production of cityscapes for touristic consumption. Locative Tourism Applications takes a journey in three parts to evaluate how these “extensions of the senses” mediate users’ experience of urban locales. The first offers the reader some theoretical and methodological orientation, the second takes them on a whirlwind tour of locative apps, and the third settles in for an extended exploration of two destinations: Montreal and Christchurch. Situating the lived body as an active, affective, and sensing participant in racialized realities, they argue that race is not simply marked on our bodies, but rather felt and registered through our senses. They illuminate the sensorial landscape of racialized world by combining the scholarship in sensory studies, phenomenology, and intercultural communication. Each chapter elaborates on the felt bodily sensations of race, racism, and racialization that illuminate how somatic labor plays a significant role in the construction of racialized relations of sensing. Their thought-provoking theorizing about the relationship between race and the senses include race as a sensory assemblage, the phenomenology of the racialized face and tongue, kinesthetic feelings of blackness, as well as the possibility of cross-racial empathy. Race is not merely socially constructed, but multisensorially assembled, engaged, and experienced. Examples include touch and the ruination of a series of art memorials; how vision was mobilised to assert the authority of the state-sponsored Freedom Park project in Pretoria; how smell memories of apartheid-era social life in Cape Town informed contemporary struggles for belonging after forced removal; how taste informed debates about the attempted rebranding of Heritage Day as barbecue day; and how the sound of the vuvuzela, popularized during the FIFA 2010 Football World Cup, helped legitimize its unofficial African and South African heritage status. This book makes a valuable contribution to the field of sensory studies and, with its focus on aesthetics and material culture, is in sync with the broader material turn in the humanities.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":51224895488273,"sku":"NIN9781032085722","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52403231260945,"sku":"NLS9781032085722","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/103208572X.jpg?v=1751080310"},{"product_id":"invention-of-taste-book-luca-vercelloni-9781474273602","title":"The Invention of Taste","description":"The Invention of Taste provides a detailed overview of the development of taste, from ancient times to the present. This interdisciplinary work makes a valuable contribution to sensory studies, memory studies, migration studies, and Asian studies.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":51306065428753,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":51306067099921,"sku":"NIN9780367693602","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52521460662545,"sku":"NLS9780367693602","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0367693607.jpg?v=1751102967"},{"product_id":"sense-making-book-sheryl-boyle-9781032908373","title":"Sense-Making","description":"In this highly innovative work, the senses are liberated from the confines of the present to serve as vehicles for accessing other historical periods and imagined futures. Sense-Making builds on the burgeoning field of sensory ethnography by introducing a pair of methodologies—sensory (re)construction and sensorial extrapolationCexpressly devised to facilitate time-travel. The first part offers a survey and critique of extant work in sensory archeology and sensory futures. The second part presents a case study of sensory (re)construction in action, focusing on Thornbury Castle (1508—1521) in the UK. The third part probes the life of the senses on the \"final frontier\", the \"next habitat\" of humanity—namely, outer space. These sensory case studies are not purely architectural or purely futuristic. They are, at the same time, exercises in \"arts-based practice\" or \"research-creation,\" where the authors do not just carry out bibliographic research and write about pasts and futures, they make them. Sense-Making is necessary reading for the international community of sensory studies scholars, as well as those with interests spanning material culture, museum and heritage studies, visual and auditory culture, experimental psychology, design and digital technology.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":51597764854033,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":51597765083409,"sku":"NGR9781032908373","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52476491890961,"sku":"NLS9781032908373","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":53593551929617,"sku":"NIN9781032908373","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1032908378.jpg?v=1755599976"},{"product_id":"food-and-multiculture-book-alex-rhys-taylor-9781472581167","title":"Food and Multiculture","description":"In this book, Alex Rhys-Taylor offers a ground-breaking sensory ethnography of East London. Anna Harris shows that our sensing is not innate or acquired, but in fact evolves through learning that is shaped by social and material relations. The chapters feature diverse sources of sensory education, including field manuals, mannequins, cookbooks and flavour charts. The examples range from medical training and forest bathing to culinary and perfumery classes. Offering a valuable guide to the uncanny and taken-for-granted ways in which adults are trained to improve their senses, this book will be of interest to disciplines including anthropology and sociology as well as food studies and sensory studies. This sensuously nuanced translation of La Saveur du monde is accompanied by a spicy preface from series editor David Howes, who introduces Le Breton's work to an English-speaking audience and highlights its implications for the disciplines of anthropology, sociology, and the cross-disciplinary field of sensory studies.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":52487859667217,"sku":null,"price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52487860453649,"sku":"NLS9781474244176","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9781474244176.jpg?v=1759861759"},{"product_id":"sensory-arts-and-design-book-ian-heywood-9781350080102","title":"Sensory Arts and Design","description":"Artists, designers and researchers are increasingly seeking new ways to understand and explore the creative and practical significance of the senses. This ground-breaking book brings art and design into the field of sensory studies providing a clear introduction to the field and outlining important developments and new directions. A compelling exploration of both theory and practice, Sensory Arts and Design brings together a wide variety of examples from contemporary art and design which share a sensory dimension in their development or user experience. Divided into three parts, the book examines the design applications of new technology with sensing capacities; the role of the senses in creating new imaginative environments; and the significance of the senses within different cultural practices. The thirteen chapters cover a highly diverse range of issues - from the urban environment, architecture and soundscapes to gustatory art, multisensory perception in painting, music and drawing, and the relationship between vision and smell. Initiated by Insight, a research group at Lancaster Institute for the Contemporary Arts -widely recognised as a center of research excellence - the project brings together a team of experts from Britain, Europe and North America. This timely book is destined to make a significant contribution to the scholarly development of this emerging field. An important read for students and scholars in sensory studies, design, art, and visual culture.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52615179075857,"sku":"NLS9781350080102","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":53080735973649,"sku":"NIN9781350080102","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9781350080102.jpg?v=1761523298"},{"product_id":"food-and-multiculture-book-alex-rhys-taylor-9781472581150","title":"Food and Multiculture","description":"In this book, Alex Rhys-Taylor offers a ground-breaking sensory ethnography of East London.
