Several significant stem turtle taxa such as: Palaeochersis talampayensis and Condorchelys antiqua provide information on the first steps of turtle evolution. Others such as: Chubutemys copelloi or Patagoniaemys gasparinae provide clues to the origin of the bizarre horned tortoises of the clade Meiolaniidae. The panpleurodiran species such as Notoemys laticentralis or Notoemys zapatocaensis shed light on the origin of modern pleurodiran turtles.  This book explores aquatic and terrestrial cryptodiran turtles, South Gondwana pleurodiran turtles, North Gondwana pleurodiran turtles; Meiolaniforms and early differentiation of Mesozoic turtles.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":49738130096401,"sku":"NGR9783319005171","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52673350992145,"sku":"NLS9783319005171","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/3319005170.jpg?v=1751189526"},{"product_id":"mesozoic-mammals-from-south-america-and-their-forerunners-book-guillermo-w-rougier-9783030638603","title":"Mesozoic Mammals from South America and Their Forerunners","description":"This book summarizes the most relevant published paleontological information, supplemented by our own original work, on the record of Mesozoic mammals’ evolution, their close ancestors and their immediate descendants. Mammals evolved in a systematically diverse world, amidst a dynamic geography that is at the root of the 6,500 species living today. Fossils of Mesozoic mammals, while rare and often incomplete, are key to understanding how mammals have evolved over more than 200 million years. Mesozoic mammals and their close relatives occur in a few  dozen localities from Argentina, Brazil, Chile,  Bolivia, and Peru spanning from the Mid- Triassic to the Late Cretaceous, with some lineages surviving the cataclysmic end of the Cretaceous period, into the Cenozoic of Argentina. There are roughly 25 recognized mammalian species distributed in several distinctive lineages, including australosphenidans, multituberculates, gondwanatherians, eutriconodonts, amphilestids and dryolestoids, among others. With its focus on diversity, systematics, phylogeny, and their impact on the evolution of mammals, there is no similar book currently available.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":51061643772177,"sku":"NIN9783030638603","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/303063860X.jpg?v=1750729133"},{"product_id":"history-of-cenozoic-mammals-from-south-america-book-federico-agnolin-9783031562655","title":"History of Cenozoic Mammals from South America","description":"The Cenozoic history of South America faunas mainly rests on the evidence yielded by the study of fossil mammals. Following the seminal work of William D. Matthew, George G. Simpson established the slogan “Splendid Isolation” for describing the evolutionary history of South American faunas. He envisaged South America (as well as other Southern Hemisphere landmasses) as dead ends in the evolution and geographical expansion of animals and plants that since the Mesozoic come in successive migratory waves from the North. More than 40 years passed away from the last important contribution by Simpson (1980). Since then, in spite to the exponential increase in biological, paleontological and geological knowledge, and an incredibly new number of fossils, his scheme remained almost unpolluted and most recent books regarding the palaeobiogeography of South American vertebrates follow this paradigm nearly without criticism. However, the factthat South America was joined to Africa, Australia, Antarctica and India during most of the Cretaceous, and that it was still connected Australia (via Antarctica) and probably Africa up to the Paleogene, together with the large number of shared biotic components between these landmasses, point in favor of a different paleobiogeographical scenario. The book aims to demonstrate that during the Paleogene (and most of the Neogene) the nature and evolutionary history of South American vertebrates is by far much more intricate than previously envisaged. As will be shown, new evidence suggests that southern landmasses may have played an important role in the early evolution and radiation of extant mammal clades.   This book is not written to conform with the ideal of a technical manual or a review, and is not carried forward to collect all that has been said before. The main goals are to criticize the current Palaeobiogeographic Model of Vertebrate Settlement of South America, and to propose a new vision based on the evidence provided by the natural world in the last decades.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":51062438330641,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":51062441115921,"sku":"NIN9783031562655","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52665883033873,"sku":"NLS9783031562655","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/3031562658.jpg?v=1769683760"},{"product_id":"advances-in-geomorphology-and-quaternary-studies-in-argentina-book-mirian-m-collantes-9783030226237","title":"Advances in Geomorphology and Quaternary Studies in Argentina","description":"These proceedings contain selected papers from the Special Symposium, organised by the Argentine Association of Geomorphology and Quaternary Studies in October 2017. Special attention is paid to the analysis of the ancient volcanic successions and the difficulties in recognition of the original rock type caused by the effects of deformation, metamorphism and alteration. The authors use distinctive cases to describe how to apply different tools in analysis and interpretation. The selected representative, well exposed and preserved volcanic records of the Southern Central Andes analyzed in this book open new perspectives in the understanding of the volcanic processes linked to active continental margins as the Central Andes. It includes valuable data relating to recurrent controversies in general geomorphology beyond the boundaries of South America and reveals the great need to integrate many different aspects of geomorphology in regional studies. With the focus on ancient landscapes and especially on planation surfaces it addresses the question of what processes could form such huge features, and how they can be preserved for so long. Many of the papers include maps of planation surfaces or other geomorphic units. The volume brings together an up-to-date, state-of-the-art collection of information on South American geomorphology, and shows beyond doubt that geomorphology is on the same time scale as global tectonics, biological evolution and major climate change. Some of the papers describe ancient geomorphological features of areas that have never been studied or published before, while others describe regions which are totally unknown to the public. The scope of the book extends from tropical latitudes north of the Tropic of Capricorn, south to freezing Patagonia in the “roaring fifties”, more than 3,500 km from north to south. Including over one thousand citations from geological and geomorphological literature, this volume will serve as a starting point for a whole new phase of studies of the fascinating landscape history of southern South America.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":51067476148497,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":51067477721361,"sku":"NIN9789400777019","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52435078349073,"sku":"NLS9789400777019","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9400777019.jpg?v=1751191644"},{"product_id":"evolution-of-the-chilean-argentinean-andes-book-eduardo-contrerasreyes-9783030098117","title":"The Evolution of the Chilean-Argentinean Andes","description":"This book describes the Mesozoic to Cenozoic evolution of the Chilean and Argentinean Andes. It combines case studies, scenario analysis, and stakeholder consultations that focus on Chinese forest, grassland and wetland ecosystems and assesses the economic and social benefits of sustainable ecosystems management. It also identifies better practices in ecosystem management from Chinese and international experience and recommends a more intensive integration of ecosystem services into decision-making processes. In November 2010, the Task Force presented five strategic policy proposals for the implementation of sustainable management for Chinese ecosystems. These proposals were extremely well-received by senior decision makers and have since been adopted by national government agencies. It demonstrates that carbonate accumulation greatly exceeds organic carbon in both soil and sediment. It also shows that intensive cropping with sound land management in the arid land not only increases soil organic carbon stock, but also enhances accumulation of soil carbonate, particularly in subsoils. Carbon accumulation in the lake sediment increased between 1950 and 2000, after which it declined, and the authors explore how human activity and climate change may have caused the changes in carbon burial in the lake sediment. The aim of this book is to demonstrate how palaeontological data has been or could be incorporated into ecological or conservation scientific studies. This book will be written by palaeontologists for modern ecologists and conservation scientists. Manuscripts will fall into one (or a combination) of four broad categories: case studies, review articles, practical considerations and future directions. In spite of its scientific value and interdisciplinary contribution, particularly in South America, in the complex task of identifying ancient environments, information is dispersed and sometimes even ignored. This book has recovered the remarkably abundant information that Ichnology of terrestrial environments has incorporated. The studied geographical regions are the Pampas of Argentina, vast lowlands with a wide latitudinal distribution in between the warm and wet subtropical areas and the cold deserts of Patagonia. Pedogenetic processes preserve tracks and marks found in sediments, rock surfaces and soils, revealing the activity of life forms. This book refers to a variety of signs of biological activity, particularly in ancient soils. This volume includes abundant original information and a meticulous revision of paleo-ichnological investigations, most by the author himself, one of the most important South American specialists, during many decades of his dedication to scientific research. The book includes a review of the stratigraphic sequences of the Cenozoic chronostratigraphic scheme. Firstly, the author provides a scrutiny of the continental ichnofacies and the ichnological record of the South American Cenozoic age. This is followed by chapters dedicated to the faunal associations of vertebrates, with very valuable information about the past climatic events and biogeographical changes, of undoubted value for those scholars interested in vertebrate Paleontology. Likewise, the highly relevant ichnotaxonomy is also developed exhaustively, with special reference to the essential activity of insects in the paleosols, mostly ants and termites. Finally, this book presents the most complete, extensive and up-dated bibliography in the subject, which is probably unique as such for southern South America and most of the world. Certainly, this is a book that will provide valuable scientific tools for those specialists interested in this infrequent discipline, either paleontologists, biologists, geologists, pedologists and sedimentologists.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52404764901649,"sku":"NLS9783030625993","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":53078559195409,"sku":"NGR9783030625993","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9783030625993.jpg?v=1758765164"},{"product_id":"intensified-land-and-water-use-book-margarita-alconadamagliano-9783030654450","title":"Intensified Land and Water Use","description":"This book combines multidisciplinary studies on the environmental consequences of intensified use of land and water, and the fusion of land to provide food for a growing population. This book considers the essential dynamics of humans and the natural environment, which is especially important in areas with shallow water-table that influence directly on agricultural activities (crops, livestock, and forests), land management, flooding, droughts, waterlogging, salt-affected soils (saline and sodic) and variation in obtained water quality in wells where these processes as related to the local and regional geomorphology control. The studies present hydrological processes towards the definition of an adequate use of soil and water with consequences of its management on the environment. Also, water studyprocedures are presented as well as their relation to other elements of the landscape. Methodologies such as the Tóthian flow system concept are recognized by different authors to provide the reader with solid interdisciplinary analyses of related environmental components such as soils, vegetation, surface water, geomorphology, geological framework and groundwater physical-chemical composition.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":52406037446929,"sku":null,"price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52406038069521,"sku":"NLS9783030654450","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9783030654450.jpg?v=1758768537"},{"product_id":"evolution-of-the-chilean-argentinean-andes-book-nemesio-heredia-9783319677736","title":"The Evolution of the Chilean-Argentinean Andes","description":"This book describes the Mesozoic to Cenozoic evolution of the Chilean and Argentinean Andes. Offering an overview of the geology, stratigraphy, petrology, mineralogy and industrial applications of these deposits, it is organized geographically and according to the different districts of the province’s diverse counties where economically important Neoproterozoic and Eopaleozoic clay reserves occur. Today, most of the sediments of the Tandilia basin are found in South Africa due to the breakup of the continents, which began in the Jurassic. This partly accounts for the difficulty in interpreting the geology of Tandilia. Apart from its extreme age and almost complete lack of fossil remains, for a long time the tectonics that affected the whole area presented a real challenge, as horst and graben structures added to the difficulty of geological correlations. Despite being 700 Ma old, most of the physical-chemical properties of the sediments have remained unchanged. The Microbially Induced Sedimentary Structures (MISS) found in the tidal and peritidal deposits also hold untouched information on the mystery of the beginning of life on earth. The fact that the Buenos Aires province is the country’s first non-metallic productive center together with the high quality of its clay deposits, its easy access from main routes and proximity to large consumer centers have made these materials highly important in the province’s construction industry.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":52500670447889,"sku":null,"price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":52500671168785,"sku":"NGR9783319818900","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9783319818900.jpg?v=1760138636"},{"product_id":"marine-isotope-stage-3-in-southern-south-america-60-ka-b-p-30-ka-b-p-book-jorge-rabassa-9783319820118","title":"Marine Isotope Stage 3 in Southern South America, 60 KA B.P.-30 KA B.P.","description":"This book presents isotope data reflecting changes in temperature derived from core samples in South America. They are the most diverse group of rodents considering their morphological disparity and biology. Their evolutionary history goes back to the Eocene (ca. 40 Ma) and their excellent fossil record indicates that this fascinating clade occupied a wide range of niches. For this contribution, we considered those caviomorph rodents that inhabited the Argentinian Pampean region, limited to the provinces of Buenos Aires and La Pampa, from the Late Miocene to the Present. During the Late Miocene, caviomorphs underwent profound changes that led to the appearance of the most modern lineages (e.g. Octodontidae, Abrocomidae, Hydrochoerinae, Caviinae, Dolichotinae, Lagostomus). Later, during the Pliocene and Pleistocene, Pampean caviomorph assemblages experienced minor changes, and just by the Pleistocene\/Holocene, modern taxonomic composition was already established. These changes seem to be related to environmental changes influenced by the aridization and cooling of the southern part of South America. Owing to its geographic position, the Pampean region acted as an ecotone between the Patagonian and Brazilian faunas, becoming an interesting object of study. In this contribution, we updated the systematic paleontology of the Argentinian Pampean caviomorphs. This revised systematic paleontology will contribute to a better understanding of the biostratigraphic scheme for this region, according to the new list of exclusive taxa for each Stage\/Age. It will also provide a good base for studying the major pathways in the evolution of modern caviomorph lineages and the climatic changes in southern South America since the Late Miocene.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":52500728938769,"sku":null,"price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":52500729561361,"sku":"NGR9783031900754","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9783031900754.jpg?v=1760138767"},{"product_id":"ocean-atmosphere-interactions-of-gases-and-particles-book-peter-s-liss-9783642256424","title":"Ocean-Atmosphere Interactions of Gases and Particles","description":"The oceans and atmosphere interact through various processes, including the transfer of momentum, heat, gases and particles. The first part sets the scene and explains how the use of Aral basin water resources, primarily used for irrigation, have destroyed the Aral Sea. The team explains how spheres and events interact and the related problems. Part 2 examines the social consequences of the ecological catastrophe and the affect of the Aral Sea desiccation on cultural and economic conditions of near Aral region. Part 3 explores the scientific causes of the destruction using detailed analyses and data plus some of their own research spanning aquatic biology, terrestrial biology, hydrology, water management and biodiversity. They also share some of the latest archaeological discoveries and paleobotanical analysis to delineate past levels and characteristics of the Aral Sea. There is particular focus on modern remote sensing and GIS techniques and how they can monitor the Aral Sea and the environment. Part 4 discusses regional and international initiatives to mitigate human and ecological problems of the Aral Sea and the wider political and economic consequences. With thorough insight of the total environment cost, the final chapters of the book will provide lessons for the future. This book explores aquatic and terrestrial cryptodiran turtles, South Gondwana pleurodiran turtles, North Gondwana pleurodiran turtles; Meiolaniforms and early differentiation of Mesozoic turtles.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52587632754961,"sku":"NLS9783319376400","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9783319376400.jpg?v=1761056703"},{"product_id":"brief-history-of-south-american-metatherians-book-francisco-goin-9789401779258","title":"A Brief History of South American Metatherians","description":"This book summarizes major aspects of the evolution of South American metatherians, including their epistemologic, phylogenetic, biogeographic, faunal, tectonic, paleoclimatic, and metabolic contexts. A brief overview of the evolution of each major South American lineage (\"Ameridelphia\", Sparassodonta, Didelphimorphia, Paucituberculata, Microbiotheria, and Polydolopimorphia) is provided. It is argued that due to physiological constraints, metatherian evolution closely followed the conditions imposed by global temperatures. In general terms, during the Paleocene and the early Eocene multiple radiations of metatherian lineages occurred, with many adaptive types exploiting insectivorous, frugivorous, and omnivorous adaptive zones. In turn, a mixture of generalized and specialized types, the latter mainly exploiting carnivorous and granivorous-folivorous adaptive zones, characterized the second half of the Cenozoic. In both periods, climate was the critical driver of their radiation andturnovers.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52588286312721,"sku":"NLS9789401779258","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9789401779258.jpg?v=1761057832"},{"product_id":"remote-sensing-advances-for-earth-system-science-book-roberto-sabia-9783319169514","title":"Remote Sensing Advances for Earth System Science","description":"To better understand the various processes and interactions that govern the Earth system and to determine whether recent human-induced changes could ultimately de-stabilise its dynamics, both natural system variability and the consequences of human activities have to be observed and quantified. In this context, the European Space Agency (ESA) published in 2006 the document The Changing Earth: New Scientific Challenges for ESA's Living Planet Programme as the main driver of ESA's new Earth Observation (EO) science strategy. The document outlines 25 major scientific challenges covering all the different aspects of the Earth system, where EO technology and ESA missions may provide a key contribution. In this framework, and aiming at enhancing the ESA scientific support towards the achievement of The Challenges, the Agency has launched in 2008 a new initiative - the Changing Earth Science Network - to support young scientists to undertake leading-edge research activities contributing to achieve the 25 scientific challenges of the LP by maximising the use of ESA data. The initiative is implemented through a number of research projects proposed and led by early-stage scientists at post-doctoral level for a period of two years which are summarized in this SpringerBrief. These projects undertake innovative research activities furthering into the most pressing issues of the Earth system, while exploiting ESA missions data with special attention to the ESA data archives and the new Earth Explorer missions.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52594478350609,"sku":"NLS9783319169514","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9783319169514.jpg?v=1761069450"},{"product_id":"fractal-solutions-for-understanding-complex-systems-in-earth-sciences-book-vp-dimri-9783319370781","title":"Fractal Solutions for Understanding Complex Systems in Earth Sciences","description":"It starts with an analysis of two classes of methods (homogeneous fractals random models, and homogeneous source distributions or one point distributions) widely diffused in the geophysical community, especially for studying potential fields and their related source distributions.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52594479595793,"sku":"NLS9783319370781","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9783319370781.jpg?v=1761069452"},{"product_id":"growth-of-the-southern-andes-book-maximiliano-naipauer-9783319794464","title":"Growth of the Southern Andes","description":"This book presents recent findings on the structure and evolution of the Southern Andes.
