50 Ribbon Rosettes & Bows to Make by Deanna D Mccool

This delightful collection of 50 decorative ribbon projects—some classic, some whimsical, some elegant—will prove irresistible for anyone with an interest in craft. Among the world’s first decorative items, ribbons were once reserved for the nobility, but spread to the middle classes by the 1800s. Braided, folded, and manipulated, ribbons were not only used as embellishments on outfits and hats, but also given alone as special gifts. In this book you'll find 50 modern ways to “play” with ribbon, with detailed instructions and stunning photos, sure to inspire creativity for beginners to advanced crafters. The book is organized into three sections. First, you’ll learn the basics of working with ribbon, along with an explanation of different types of ribbon and the tools needed to create a professional look. Then, choose from among the many different types of ribbon projects: Fashionista Flair, Timeless Toppers, and Flower Power. In the final section, you’ll learn how to combine different ribbon-crafting skills into stunning “Over The Top” projects, such as large layered hair bows, funky flip flops, sashes, and ribbon flower arrangements.

The autumn craft-a-lanche of pre-Christmas craft titles has arrivedThere's so much quality stuff to choose from, it's difficult to decide which title to feature... Today's spotlight is on a fun and useful ribboncraft title. My logic is that you can keep it in mind when visiting the autumn batch of consumer craft events - go shopping with particular projects in mind so you can selectively stock up on your ribbon stash. This book is exclusively about textile ribbon techniques - no look-in for paper ribbons or giftwrap ribbons (such as curling ribbon). Having said that, textile bows make fabulous embellishments for papercraft projects, particularly giftwrap treatments - the author is aware of this and gives it a mention, citing project suitability for papercraft designs where appropriate (example: #30 Round and Round Bow - a fan-shaped creation). Decorate your gifts, hair and clothes with this impressive range of fifty different bows and rosettes. All you need is some ribbon and a few other things and you can get tying, stitching and sticking!

This book starts with a short piece on different types of ribbons and their properties, so you know what variety is suitable for which style and why. You don't need a lot of equipment to make up the designs in this book and many designs are suitable for using up leftovers from other projects. There is a section on core techniques before you start, so you can learn about cutting, attaching hair clips, sealing and other things. I like the project picker with photos showing all the designs - they are so beautiful it is hard to decide which to make first and means that it is easy and fast to select what you need. The projects themselves are grouped into chapters whether they are for wearing, attaching to gifts or floral in nature and finally there is a short chapter on projects, some with instructions and others just a gallery. Each project has a photo of the finished piece, instructions with captions and drawn diagrams plus what you need. There are hair decorations, corsages, jewellery, decorations for Christmas, adornments for packages, flowers made from ribbon and more. Nothing is terribly difficult to master, and many take almost no time at all but it is surprising how much better even a simple bow looks when you have followed instructions from an expert. A lovely book on an unusual subject.
