The Gods of Frequency by Shane Johnstone
The Gods of Frequency follows the relationship of two musicians living in Glasgow, one battling with the crippling self doubt and anxiety due to his working class label in an overwhelmingly wealthy arts industry and the other privately educated. He falls victim to the pressures placed on him both internally and externally and succumbs to alcohol addiction, ultimately leading to a nervous breakdown. The relationship forms the centrepiece of the story, with Shane’s pivotal self-recovery moment stemming from an accidental pregnancy which pulls him from the claws of addiction.
'A vivid and intense journey into the conflicts and regrets of a working class musician who's trying to turn his life aroundThe God's of Frequency delivers the claustrophobia and remorse or a brutal hangover, the thrills and communion of a highland festival, and the sometimes redemptive, sometimes destructive, joy of love and art. A moving and revelatory debut, full of bold and exciting writing. One of the best novels to come out of Glasgow in recent years.'- Henry
Shane Johnstone grew up in Govanhill, a largely deprived area in Glasgow. He is the son of two artists and went on to become a musician, earning a living from gigging and touring around Europe with different bands, mainly focusing on folk music as well as American roots such as blues. Being working class in the music scene exposed him to the huge disparity of wealth in the arts communities and the chasmic contrast in opportunities for those with and without capital. After thirteen years in the music scene he made the change to writing and relished the therapeutic effects. Shane writes in English, Scots and Scottish Gaelic, all of which appear in the novel, and has had several pieces of prose and articles published by literary magazines such as Lallans, New Writing Scotland, Sgrìobag, and Pushing Out The Boat. He has a fascination with literature and spoken language, particularly minority languages and has is influenced by the profound everyday linguistic creativity of Glaswegian people.
