Charlotte Delbo was handed over to the Gestapo in 1942 for planning to hand out anti-German leaflets. She was sent to Auschwitz, then Ravensbruck, where she remained until the end of the war. This book is a memoir of her time in these camps, a transformation of experience into prose.Charlotte Delbo joined the Communist Youth movement in 1932, then the Resistance, but she and her husband were captured by the French police special brigades on March 2, 1942. She was sent to Auschwitz-Birkenau alongside 230 other women, the majority of whom were Resistance members. Only 49 people showed up.
