Even during her time with the literary group The Generation of the 1950s, much of her work attempted to bridge the gap between Mexico's pre-Columbian and European cultural heritage. Castellanos perished in a strange house accident in Tel Aviv while serving as Mexico's ambassador to Israel.

She was buried in Mexico City's rotunda of Illustrious Men, which she may have found ironic.
