Billywise by Judith Nicholls

This book is suitable for the age-range 4+. 'From a mole-black hole in the oldest oak, deep in the heart of the fern-brushed wood', in this poetic and atmospheric text, the first faltering steps of a little owl chick are depicted, from the struggle out of the egg, to the final exhilerating first swoop of flight. A lyrical text from a children's poet is complemented by stunning artwork by prize-winning artist Jason Cockcroft.
Judith Nicholls is an established poet for children. Her poems are often anthologised, and she has published many anthologies of her own - including 'Earthways, Earthwise: Poems on Conservation', 'Otherworlds' as well as her own collections, including 'Dragonsfire' and 'Midnight Forest'. Judith lives in Westbury, Wiltshire. The illustrator: Jason Cockcroft is a hugely talented illustrator - his books for Bloomsbury include 'Daddy's Lullaby', and the forthcoming 'Blue Rabbit. He is the winner of the first ever Blue Peter Award in 2000 for 'A Pilgrim's Progress'. Jason lives in Addingham, West Yorkshire.
