The Libertine and I Just Dropped By to Visit the Guy (Royal Court); Valued Friends and A Going Concern (Hampstead); Bugles at the Gates of Jalalabad (part of the Tricycle Theatre's Great Game season about Afghanistan); The Convicts' Opera (Out of Joint); Lost Land (Stepenwolf, Chicago); The Art of War (Sydney Theatre Company); and A Jovial Crew (Sydney Theatre Company) are among Stephen Jeffreys' plays Hard Times, his adaptation of Charles Dickens' novel, has been played all over the world. He wrote the films The Libertine and Diana, which starred Johnny Depp and Naomi Watts, respectively. Backbeat, a Beatles musical that premiered at the Citizens Theatre and went on to seasons in London's West End, Toronto, and Los Angeles, was co-written by him. He was the translator for Simon McBurney's production of The Magic Flute at English National Opera.
He was Literary Associate at the Royal Court Theatre for eleven years, and is now a member of the Council. His renowned playwriting workshops have affected a large number of playwrights.
