The Complete Book of British Berries by David Lang

The Complete Book of British Berries is the first book devoted to this subject. It describes and illustrates every edible or poisonous plant bearing a berry or fleshy fruit that is either native to Britain or so well established that it is a familiar part of the landscape. There is a comprehensive introduction to the different habitats where fruits may be found and the way in which the various types of fruit are formed. Each of the 96 species or groups is described in careful detail: first the fruit, then the leaf and flower, followed by ecology and distribution throughout Britain and Europe. There are also interesting notes on history and uses. Of particular value is the information on plant poisons and their symptoms, with simple recommendations for treatment in both humans and animals. The human toxicology has been compiled and updated with the assistance of the Poisons Unit at New Cross Hospital in London. The text on contentious groups such as brambles, roses and whitebeams has been scrutinized by the botanical referees appointed for these groups in Britain. Each subject is illustrated by a colour photograph specially taken by the author, and by accurate line drawings, which will enable the novice to identify the fruits without difficulty. A full glossary and bibliography are also included. The book will be of great interest and value both for reference and as a guide for anyone who enjoys walking in the countryside in late summer and autumn, when the hedgerows, woods and fields are bright with berries.
David Lang is an experienced amateur botanist, whose previous books include Orchids in Britain and The Wild Flower Finder's Calendar. A veterinary surgeon by profession, he has for many years been a partner in a large practice in Lewes. He lectures in Sussex on natural history and has been widely involved in nature conservation. As well as botany, his hobbies include singing in opera and oratorio, photography, bird watching and collecting Georgian glass.
