The craft art objects are categorized according to the materials used, with each category comprising a separate chapter. The book aims to assist in building the cultural heritage of a South African design identity and to demonstrate that the African Renaissance could come out of South Africa. Its aim is to introduce South African craft artists to the rest of the world in order to engender interest and positive economic implications.
Dr Elbe Coetsee completed a PhD at the University of Pretoria, researching the demographic characteristics and entrepreneurial attitudes of South African craft artists. This research took four years to complete, during which she travelled extensively throughout South Africa, visiting all the major craft festivals and markets. She acquired a sound knowledge and understanding of the very essence of craft art industry.
