Dorking and the Mole Valley Past and Present by Ian Williams

This is an exciting glimpse of how much (and how little) the town of Dorking and the villages of the Mole Valley have changed over the past 100 years. The book is beautifully illustrated with old postcards from the extensive collection of Ian Williams, which are carefully matched with modern images of the same scene taken by a local photographic club. Each set of images is captioned with interesting historical facts, folklore, and tales, further enhancing the interest of anyone who lives in or who has visited this beautiful area. The busy market town of Dorking is steeped with history and its surrounding villages are familiar to many people for their outstanding beauty. Brockham, Betchworth, Buckland, Leigh, Newdigate, Holmwood, Ockley, Beare Green, Abinger Hammer, Coldharbour, Boxhill, Mickleham, West Humble, and Ranmore are all included. Ian Williams' book is a treasury of mages and text that locals and visitors alike will return to again and again with interest and enjoyment.
IAN WILLIAMS was born in Trinidad and raised in Canada. In 2019 he won the Scotiabank Giller Prize for his first novel, Reproduction, which was published in Canada, the US, and the UK, and translated into Italian. His poetry collection, Personals, was shortlisted for the Griffin Poetry Prize and the Robert Kroetsch Poetry Book Award. His short story collection, Not Anyone's Anything, won the Danuta Gleed Literary Award for the best first collection of short fiction in Canada. His first book, You Know Who You Are, was a finalist for the ReLit Poetry Prize. Williams holds a Ph.D. in English from the University of Toronto and has recently returned to that university as a tenured professor, after several years as a professor of poetry in the Creative Writing program at the University of British Columbia. His third poetry collection, Word Problems, was published by Coach House Press in the fall of 2020.
